The boys drink and review Gaelic Storm, an imperial red ale, then ask why, since "women's rights" have made such great strides in recent decades, women are actually less happy? According to the 2024 American Family Survey, liberal women are half as happy as conservative women. There's no greater currency in liberalhood than being a victim. Liberal women therefore feel better -- that is, they feel worse -- the more they can claim to be a victim. What causes all this? Why was feminism such a horrible failure?

Natalya Kay is a fiddler in the Irish tradition and a key member of Celtic super group Gaelic Storm. She and I met in the spring of 2020 when she moved into the house next door to mine in East Nashville. I think the first time we jammed was at a party in my front yard. I remember thinking two things about that encounter. One was, Man this girl can really play! The other was, being shocked to hear her say she had no interest in any kind of career as a professional musician. That seems like a long time ago now. This year she played countless festivals with Gaelic Storm, stadium shows with the Zac Brown Band, and a few weeks ago she was at the Hollywood Bowl sharing the stage with Harrison Ford, Jackson Brown and Brandi Carlile. Afterward, she got props from none other than Sir Paul McCartney.Natalya's meteoric rise has been the result not of an unrelenting determination, but her genuine talent and as she describes here, a consistent decision to walk through whatever door that opened, despite the chorus of self-doubt ringing in her ears. In the course of this lively conversation we come back to the theme of insecurity - a part of every artist's experience - and of resisting the temptation to let it win. Natalya laughingly describes the moment when she got the call from Gaelic Storm, the gig that ultimately changed her life. She tried to talk them out of the audition, saying she wasn't a good fit, she didn't have any experience. They insisted, she acquiesced. Now she's on the road traveling the world. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication! To support the podcast, writing, and music, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As a quiet homeschooled girl from rural Maine, she describes the irony of feeling absolutely at home on stage with GS, how she feels like it's the most natural thing in the world, being up there in front of all those people, fiddling away.Speaking of, I ask her about a few of the approaches specific to the tradition of Irish fiddling, the rolls for one. She demonstrates how she does it, right there at the table. It will be interesting to anyone who loves or even has a passing attraction to Irish music. Natalya breaks down the technique and shows how it affects the play of the overall tune. I loved seeing that. No player am I in the Irish way, but I do have something of a background in bluegrass and old-time music, and there's enough of a language shared that I felt I might back Natalya on her performance of Cliffs of Moher, a popular Irish jig which, being in 6/8 time, requires a completely different approach than the 4/4 of its American cousin. I did my best to stay out of the way and let Natalya's playing shine, a performance that alone was worth the listen.I hope you enjoy this conversation with a truly fresh voice in Irish Music.Find Natalya:Website Instagram Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

On this episode of Tent Show Radio, the critically acclaimed, chart-topping, international outfit Gaelic Storm bring their unique, high-energy Celtic sound to the Big Top stage. It's hard to imagine Gaelic Storm coming into its own after 20 years of success, but that's precisely what makes the group a true anomaly. Founded in 1996, the band's first major career breakthrough arrived before they had even recorded their first album. Appearing as the "steerage band" entertaining passengers with “An Irish Party in Third Class” in James Cameron's massive 1997 blockbuster Titanic, Gaelic Storm were widely embraced by audiences when they released their self-titled debut album a year later. Led by founding members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the acclaimed multi-national Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows (13 of which have been on the Big Top stage), it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their energetic mix of Irish and Scottish traditional fare, drinking songs, and playful original material they have developed a fanatic and well-diversified fan base. Country Music fans adore their storytelling, Bluegrass fans love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and rock fans simply relish the passion they have for their instruments. Throughout their multi-decade career, Gaelic Storm has amassed more than 250 million streams, racked up numerous Top 10 spots on the Billboard World Charts, and released 13 studio albums including How Are We Getting Home?, Bring Yer Wellies, and What's The Rumpus. With their most recent release Go Climb A Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers. In addition to Murphy and Twigger, the band features percussionist Ryan Lacey, piper Peter Purvis, and fiddle player Natalya Kay.     EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Jaime Hansen - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support   FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/    Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/  Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism  The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/  Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/  Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/ SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. This episode features recordings from Gaelic Storm's July 2022 performance under the tent. Tric and Heppa get lost in the Estmark Hills and stumble upon a criminal enterprise. Scene 6Scene 7Scene 8Scene 9 GM Notes I had definitely intended the campaign to start with an exploration of the southern battlefield, but a failed Geography check took us way off course. Fortunately, I already had some ideas bouncing around in my head for adventures further down the line. The events in this episode were inspired by the Irish folk song Hills of Connemara. I particularly like the version performed by Gaelic Storm. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rREMPw8U2No The character of Hepalonia started our game with Intolerance as her Flaw, and in the first few sessions, her player wrestled with how to portray that, hence some of the ignorant comments about humans that you hear in this episode. Eventually, we shifted her Flaw to Ignorance, since that was more comfortable for the player. One of the things I really enjoy about RPGs is watching characters come to life through play. For Heppa's player, discovering the character as we play is more important than the adventures that happen around that, so it was important to get her to a place where she was comfortable. Our character art by Del Borovic and the map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. Our music is sampled from Return to Wesnoth by Matthias Westlund (aka West), licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, part of The Battle for Wesnoth Project. Visit them at wesnoth.org. Need context? Éire Óg hołdowała hasłom radykalnym i rewolucyjnym, zapowiadała walkę o niepodległość, w 1848 z jej inicjatywy rozpoczęło się nieudane i szybko stłumione powstanie. Trzy pionowe pasy: zielony, biały i pomarańczowy. Chcąc zaakcentować dążenia niepodległościowe Irlandczycy wykorzystując swój symbol pozbyli się korony nad harfą a w tle dali kolor zielony symbolizujący katolików, to wśród katolików przeważały postawy narodowe. Wywieszanie „harp without the crown”, rozpoczęło się na morzu, pierwszy zieloną flagę wywiesił prawdopodobnie Eoghanowi Ruadh Ó Néillowi XVII-wieczny wygnaniec i żołnierz irlandzkiej brygady armii hiszpańskiej. Jego okręt, św. Franciszek, w 1642 r. stojąc na kotwicy w Dunkierce w drodze do Irlandii, miał podniesioną na topie masztu "irlandzką harfę na zielonym polu". Ó Néill wracał do Irlandii, aby wziąć udział w wojnie konfederackiej. Pochodzi prawdopodobnie z XIX wieku. Najwcześniejsza wzmianka o niej pochodzi z książki „Round the Horn Before the Mast” Basila Lubbocka z 1902 roku. Lubbock opowiada w książce o rejsie czteromasztową barką Royalshire z Frisco do Glasgow wokół Przylądka Horn. Wspomina w niej, wśród wielu innych pieśni, o „The Gals of Dublin Town” jako o bardzo popularnej szancie. Istnieją dwie wersje tekstu, jedna dotyczy ogólnych tematów żeglarskich: pogody, skarg załogi, kierunków żeglugi. Druga opisuje statek, bandery, przygody załogi i kapitana. I takiej wersji posłuchamy. Audycja zawiera utwór: "The Girls of Dublin Town” w wykonaniu Gaelic Storm, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne @jarasaseasongi znajdziesz na facebooku i YouTube :-)

Leo of Harmundi shares how an improvisational set of tunes turned into their brand new single. We like to call our music "psychedelic Irish music" because a great part of it is made out of improvisations, in a real-time dialogue between the instruments. Among our sets, one in particular, called "Jump At The Morrison" has been present in every show we ever played and in each one of our albums – although every time it is iterated in a significantly different way, because at least half of it is created on-spot with no time limit. We based our new single on this set. The Pandemics proved a time to abandon our comfort zones, so we decided to record it as a single in yet a newer way: stripped out of both tunes (Jump At The Sun and Morrison's Jig), leaving only the improvs. Contrary to what we are also used to, the harmony was first composed by our guitarist, and the melodies were created following her progressions. The Pandemics were also a time for us to relearn our concepts of time and develop a new relationship with the "here and now". Because of that, we made it our shortest track yet, very different from the usual 6 - 10 minutes we're used to working with. And we made it with no clear beginning, middle or end, in a way some music traditions of the world work: it can either be looped (hence the name, which can also produce a "loop"), or be seen like a river that just flows forward – and, in that case, to watch it go is to simply stay with the flow of the present moment. The single was recorded in our personal home studios and mixed by our mandolinist. The artwork was designed by our flutist, who is also a photographer, based on one of his photos. 4:25 - “Op At The Lo” by Harmundi from single You can find more about Harmundi at Harmundi.art, and you can enjoy their “Jump at the Morrison” set on show #525 of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. You can also buy their music on Bandcamp, which is my favorite place to recommend you to buy, because that's where the artists get paid the most. If you enjoyed the music, check out the band and maybe buy some music and merch, follow them on social. Send them lots of love and money. 6:56 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE If this show made you happy, then join the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. Save 15% with an annual membership. 7:11 - STORY OF JOHNNY JUMP UP In 1999, I was playing on the South Mall with the Brobdingnagian Bards. We played at lunchtime five days a week to try and improve our chops and maybe make a few fans. And fans we made. More and more people sat in the grass of the mall eating their lunch and listening to us play. At the end of one show, a man approached us and asked if we knew some Celtic bands. I was brand new to Celtic music at the time. I had no clue who The Wolfe Tones, The Irish Balladeers or Christy Moore were. But when he came back, he brought me a mixtape with a couple albums by those first two and a few tracks by Christy Moore as well. I ate it up. I listened to the cassette constantly. It was my true entry into the world of Celtic music. The two tracks by Christy Moore stood out the most. One was a brilliant, rockin' folk version of “Lanigan's Ball”. The fiddle and the bodhran. OMG. It was just amazing. The other was a ¾ time signature version of “Johnny Jump Up”. I soon added that to our repertoire. Our version stood out at Excalibur Fantasy Faire because of the rhythm. You see, the song was making its rounds on the faire circuit. The Bedlam Bards sang it. And there were a bunch of people at the Tavern who also sang it. But the later version was very poppy. I was anti-pop at the time. So the upbeat vocal harmonies just annoyed the hell out of me. It wasn't until last year that I realized Gaelic Storm released a version of “Johnny Jump Up” on their album “What's the Rumpus?”. I'm guessing that's where that upbeat version gained popularity. But who knows now. Nevertheless, when the Brobdingnagian Bards split up in 2008, I wanted to do something new with the song. I moved to New Orleans in 2009. When I sat down to record Happy Songs of Death, I decided to give it a little rhythm of my own. It turned into quite a fun song to sing. You can hear another version of me singing this song in show #222 St Patrick's Day Gift. I do highly recommend you check out that episode if you haven't. That's because I also sang on a Celtic Rock version of that song by Tuatha de Danann. It is insanely awesome. Next week, you get to hear a story and a tune by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from my 2019 Celtic Invasion of Dingle, Ireland. 9:58 - “Johnny Jump Up” by Marc Gunn from Happy Songs of Death Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. Each year, Tim Taylor makes his homage to our 50th and, perhaps, greatest state of the union, the islands of Hawaii. On this year's trip, Tim decided that the sandy beaches, warm trade winds, whale watching, deep sea fishing, and drinking a mai tai at his favorite tiki hut were just too enjoyable and decided to extend his trip by a week. But wait, what about the radio show? Well, the show must go on and on it did. So, you say to yourself, "What does Hawaii have to do with Irish culture!" More than you think! On this episode the Emerald Isle meets the Isles of Hawaii featuring music from Irish and Irish American artist such as Rosemary Clooney who recorded her last album in Honolulu, HI along with the Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack big band and the Honolulu Symphony Pops and how about Bing Crosby? Yep, he recorded dozens of Hawaiian themed songs and dedicated an entire album to the Islands. Elvis Presley, you say? Well, he filmed three movies on the Islands including Blue Hawaii. And, who could forget his comeback concert Aloha from Hawaii in 1973? Yeah, Johnny Cash too! The last song on his last album released six years after his passing is a traditional Hawaiian song. Hey, and let's not forget our friends from the Emerald Isle! Bands like Gaelic Storm, Emma Langford, The Byrne Brothers, and a brand spanking new song from Davey Furey featuring S.O.N. off the newly released album, Haunted Streets. Plus stories of the Celtic Maui Pipe Band and a special set from a couple of local Hawaiian bands playing Irish music featuring the Kilt Lifters and Craiceailte (Crack-ay-alcha), Hawaii's craziest Celtic Band. All of this warmth brought to you from near the beaches of Kihea, HI in the ProArts Studio. Tune in each Sunday afternoon on WNDZ 750AM from 12 noon to 1pm or catch the podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com.
