Keith Roberts, the charismatic frontman of Celtic rock band the Young Dubliners, is a force to be reckoned with. Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Roberts brings an unparalleled authenticity to his music that has captivated audiences across the globe. With his band, he has crafted a unique sound that merges traditional Irish melodies with modern rock sensibilities, earning them a devoted following and critical acclaim. Roberts' soulful vocals and electrifying stage presence have been the driving force behind the Young Dubliners' success. He formed the band in 1988, and they have since released several albums and embarked on countless tours, both in the United States and Europe. Along the way, Roberts has collaborated with other musicians and even ventured into solo work. This marks his second time on Dystopia Tonight and with two appearances on Dystopia's annual MS benefit Keith has become a fast friend of the show and a fan favorite. Using his unique perspective as an Irish musician living in America to provide a fresh take on our potential dystopian future, the conversation is always lively, spontaneous and tons of fun. Enjoy!

It's Thursday, so Howie Klein is here. It's been a busy week since we last spoke and lots has happened... The State of the Union address, the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the Grammy awards, I saw Springsteen, the Young Dubliners and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Burt Bacharach died. We have very much to talk about today...
This long week finally comes to a close today with another full show.We have unfinished business yesterday, regarding both heinous House votes on the "horrors of socialism" and to remove Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs committee.I'll share Mark Takano's piece for DownwithTyranny.com that Howie Klein told us about yesterday, and we'll try to get to the second half of Rep. Omar's floor speech that we didn't have time for yesterday. Then, we'll chat with John Nichols of The Nation about both stories...Then it's time to start the weekend. When I did music radio in Los Angeles, a band called The Young Dubliners became friends of mine, and played a number of times in our studios and at station events. I honestly didn't even know they were still playing, until I saw a Young Dubs show advertised at the Broward Center. So, I'll be seeing them tonight (tickets still available.... I highly recommend them!).In preparation, we'll jump in the wayback machine and go back to October 19, 1995 for an in-studio visit from The Young Dubliners.

Top o' the mornin' to ya! This week we turn several shades of green as we celebrate the emerald isle and St. Patrick's Day! We here in the good ol' US of A have completely bastardized this whole affair into a day of wearing ridiculous amounts of green, pretending to be of Irish descent, and getting extremely drunk while listening to U2, those single songs by The Cranberries and Thin Lizzy that everyone knows, and any host of Celtic-based punk rock (Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, etc…). Not on this episode!!! We are going to go deeper into true Irish rock n' punk n' metal that should be added to your St. Paddy's Day playlist and celebrated all year round! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we listen to some artist that throw a little traditional Irish into their mix and others that just simply rock! Here's to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. Has gone outside of their usual wheelhouse and ventured into the world of instrumental gypsy jazz with their new album Dinner for Derelicts. QUEL BORDEL (QB!) was formed in San Diego, CA in 2013 w/ a Ukrainian, two Filipino brothers, a classically trained violinist, and a punk rock drummer. After the better part of a decade, they have had multiple releases and kept up a vigorous touring regiment of over 150+ shows a year. The band has toured the US, Canada, and Europe, and they have made a small dent in the folk-punk music scene: coining their own sub-genre “world punk.” After the release of their first full-length CD, Caravan Treasures (nominated for Best World Music Album by the 2015 San Diego Music Awards), QB! reveled in a three-week international festival tour with French folk group BandàpArt (headlining Coin de la Vigne, & FestiBaloche in France), which they repeated again 2016 in the US (headlining Crestfest in Colorado, SD GypsyFest in San Diego, and others) amid several regional tours and resident gigs as well. 2017 saw increased regional touring with a full European Tour (headlining Coin de la Vigne again in France, as well as performances at Festibaloche (Olargues, France), and Highmatland Festival (Leutkirch, Germany) a motif that has continued on as the band currently maintains a vigorous touring schedule and band “bromance” with BandàpArt. In fact the two groups have merged into a side-project super-group known as BandàBordel and released an EP together in 2018. QUEL BORDEL! is noted for their wild performances and danceable beats. QB! has headlined sweaty, high-energy shows at House of Blues (Mainstage), The Holding Company, The Casbah, and has performed at the Get Shamrocked festival 7 years in a row. Likewise, the band has shared the stage with: Flatfoot 56, Metallachi, The Rum Jacks, The Real McKenzies, Diego's Umbrella, Sprung Monkey, Magic Giant, Young Dubliners, Dublin City Ramblers, Bridge City Sinners, Daze ‘N Daze, Dirty Kid Discount, and many others. QB also boasts several television slots (including a feature on TLC's Breaking Amish), as well as new music in the pipeline (three EP's released in under a year and two more on the way).Website: http://www.quel-bordel.com
We had the pleasure of interviewing Bren Holmes over Zoom video! When you've been a professional musician for over thirty years, you can accumulate a large trunk of songs. The tucked-away tunes that Ireland-born / Los Angeles residing Bren Holmes shares on his solo debut, Everything You Never Wanted, reveal impressive singer/songwriter talents that never got fully displayed during his lengthy tenure as bassist with the Young Dubliners. While old Young Dub fans will connect with Celtic music flourishes that course through this album, they – and all listeners – also will be easily drawn into the spirited rootsy sound that fills Everything You Never Wanted, which arrived on his own Bren Holmes Productions label.Holmes' appealing vocals - sincere, confident, and a bit world weary – prove to be another strength of Everything You Never Wanted. The warm, friendly qualities of his singing particularly shine on two pub-friendly sing-a-longs, “Pieces” and “Somewhere – Ode To Shane.” The tunes also offer musical nods to his homeland, with the latter undoubtedly tipping its cap to Pogues' legendary frontman Shane MacGowan as well.Holmes co-produced the album with Bryan Dobbs (Brett Anderson, Rattle The Knee) and the two handled much of the instrumentation. Holmes performed on guitar, bass, mandolin, and percussion, while Dobbs played electric guitars, mandolin, banjo, lap steel and dobro. Holmes, however, also enlisted a number of his musician pals to lend their support. Besides Anderson, the album features contributions by Cindy Wasserman (Dead Rock West), ace session drummer Dave Raven (Keith Richards, Nellie McKay, John Doe), violinist Rachel Grace (Foo Fighters, Usher, Annie Lennox), producer/musician Tim Boland, and drummer Ward Poulos. The uilleann pipes, bodhran, and whistles, played by Holmes' fellow Dublin expat Pat D'Arcy, injects some Irish flavor into the music. We want to hear from you! Bren is funny, witty, and very open about his journey in music. Make sure to check out Bren's album today! Bren Holmes moved from Dublin, Ireland to Los Angeles, California to start an Irish band called The Young Dubliners. They play a great combination of rock and traditional Irish music. In fact, Bren tells me how he gets a royalty check for a song that's 400 years old. After 28 years of grueling touring with the band, Bren called it a career. Until, that is, he started finishing music that he had been writing for years. He got together with some friends and recorded his first solo album, Everything You Never Wanted. Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast. I’m your host Chance Whitmore. A lot happened this week. Early birthdays, concerts, and work accelerating towards a “slowdown” and more. It was a long busy week and I regret nothing though admittedly my rear is dragging. In the process I ran across a couple opportunities to watch experts in their field work their magic. It reminded me of something I had told a friend: 90% of my job is invisible unless you know the job (admittedly there were major caveats in this case). And if you really think about it, for the most part we have a narrow world view when it comes to one another here are just a few examples. In fact, it’s almost morbidly comical that one of the biggest challenges musicians have faced over the past few years is the declining sales of our primary revenue stream, CDs. More and more people are streaming music. That’s made touring all the more important. And now we have COVID-19. All of my big gigs through May are canceled. It’s the same with most musicians. There has never been a better time to ask for your help. Please support the musicians you enjoy. If you’re able to buy digital downloads, a CD, or merch or tip the artist online. Do so. If you’re not, we totally understand. So do something to promote the artist. Share their CD or Spotify page. Do something to spread the word. Share your love of them online and in your Facebook groups or other social groups. I confess I’ve never been more thankful that I have this podcast to help support my family. So I can only imagine how other Celtic musicians are faring. Please support them as you’re able. A HUGE thanks for your podcasts: it's always exciting waiting each Thursday! This week (just as the last and, probably, also the next one) I'm working from home, due to COVID19 emergency. Here in Italy very strict rules force us to stay home and go out only for severe necessities. Well, it's been a bit difficult to get used to but... hey! We are safe, alive, and we have our favourite music (Celtic one of course!) and your company! Even in this difficult times I thank the Lord and wait for better times... thanks to you, also, for your weekly gift. Attached you can find a pic of me working at my "new desk"... stay safe my friend!" Eric Mailler responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hi Marc, I downloaded the songs without any issues. Also wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I love listening to songs I’d never hear otherwise and learning more about Celtic culture through the song lyrics and letters your read. You asked who some of our favorite Celtic bands are. As far as well known bands go, the Young Dubliners and Gaelic Storm are up there for me. But, for local bands, the Rogue Diplomats are awesome. I usually try to catch them in Bethlehem, PA around St. Patrick’s Day. Anyway, thanks again, and Sláinte!" Steven Rausch emailed a photo: "Listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, made this traditional Guinness beef stew on St Patrick’s Day (and your birthday). Slainte." Sean Morris emailed: "Hi, loving the podcast! You mentioned that listeners should submit music from female musicians/singers for future consideration. I'd like to draw your attention to banjoist Angela Usher from Manchester, England. Angela is a contemporary of musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, the Farrell's, Dezi Donnelly, Angelina Carberry, John Joe and Grace Kelly, etc who grew up learning and playing together in the 80's/90's in Manchester. She released her first album 'The Gort Mile' last year which has some lovely tunes and songs (some her own pieces). It's a measure of the regard she is held in that she had musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, Colin Farrell and John Carty collaborating with her on the Album. (I think Mike McGoldrick may have produced it) Angela is also involved with a cross community (Irish and Jewish) music project 'Amid the murk over the Irk' as a performer/composer/arranger. This is quite an interesting project which has brought gems such as this version of The Butterfly to us Angela also host several sessions in Manchester. Actually worth mentioning Grace Kelly here as well, former All Ireland whistle champion, sister of bodhran player Jon Joe Kelly who hosts another four sessions in Manchester. We have a strong female contingent of musicians here and it's not unknown for men to be in the minority at sessions here. Anyway, hope you enjoy Angela's album. Keep up the good work with the podcast."
LA based Composer/Producer and Drummer Jon Mattox joins me today on the Spiritual Spiral Podcast. Jon may be best known in LA as a film composer writing and creating music for numerous TV shows, video games and commercials, but he is also an incredibly talented studio drummer. Jon shares stories about his upbringing, how music played such a vital role in his life and what drew him to become a drummer in the first place. He talks about transitioning from touring with The Young Dubliners to building a home studio, becoming a studio based drummer as well as a film composer. We also talk about the current state of the music industry and if the full length record may become a thing of the past. We discuss Cal Newport's book Digital Minimalism, the value of quiet time and Jon shares some of the struggles he faces when it comes to promoting his work on social media. This week on the Eight One Sixty, we’re talking about the Jane Doe Revue: Female Rock Orchestra - A Benefit for Abby's Fund, happening at recordBar on this Saturday, June 8. The mission of this project is to bring together women of any age, culture, affiliation and label to honor women in every shape and form and make music together. We’ll hear music from some of the women playing at this fundraiser and get details about the event from special guest and The Bridge's Content Manager, Michelle Bacon. We’ll play music from Amy Farrand and The Like, Other Americans, Blue False Indigo and Violet and the Undercurrents. After that we’re going to dive into some brand new music and hear from KC/Lawrence acts: Mene Mene, Volker Brothers, Jason Buice and Kemet the Phantom, plus Young Dubliners, who are performing at the KC Irish Center this Friday.

The Young Dubliners are getting ready to tour, Which leads us to wonder; When is the best time to see a band on tour? Good arguments for both ends...but not the middle. Also we give you a big Clue in figuring out two of the "Yet to be announced" acts will be at the California Mid-State Fair.

Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. This week, I'm gonna highlight the favorite music of one of my patrons of the podcast. In the spring, I asked Patrons of the Podcast to share some of their favorite songs that were featured in the show. Stephen Bernhardt was one of two who listed a complete 20+ songs that he loved. So I decided to give his songs a special feature like I did with Annie Lorkowski back in episode #319. Some of Annie's songs were on his original list, so he was kind enough to revise it for me. Let's get started. * CELTIC PODCAST NEWS September 30th is your last chance to get 5 of my Cds for just $24 to save 68% off the sticker price. Follow the link to my Bandcamp page. I shared the rough itinerary for the Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye this week. One of my subscribers responded with comments about their own visit there. So I thought I'd ask you. Have you been to the Isle of Skye? What did you love and not love about it? Please share in the comments. In the meantime, I should have the itinerary online next week. * I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? www.LetsTalkAboutTheWeather.org Violinist and songwriter Alicia Previn has enjoyed many successful years recording, performing and touring with a variety of artists such as The Cages, The Young Dubliners, and Folding Mr. Lincoln on platforms from MTV to Jay Leno's Tonight Show. Today she illustrates the importance of sometimes-forgotten animals through songs and children’s books featuring her personal illustrations. A fan of bio-dynamic farming, her Earthworm Book includes instructions on how to start a small worm farm as well as a complementary tune. Give Bees a Chance and The Strange Disappearance of Walter Tortoise make Alicia’s point unmissable: these animals each play a pivotal role in addressing our ecological future. Today's show is brought to you by Celtic Invasion Vacations Every year, I take Celtic music fans on an adventure of a lifetime. This is not your typical wham-bam-thank you m'aam tour. Instead, our invasion brings out the relaxation and magic of our adventure. In 2018, you can join me on a Celtic Invasion of the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Help spread the word. Now with every episode I ask you to vote for your favorite bands in that episode. At the end of the year, I compile all of your favorites into this show--the Celtic Top 20. These are the Top 20 Celtic bands that you thought were the best in 2016. When you're done listening, go cast your vote. Then listen to past episodes and to the same. This is the second hour of the Coast Highway Shuffle Show co-hosted by Brian "Hurricane" Hurley! Songs include those by Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Santana, The Young Dubliners, Taj Mahal, Freddie King, Gary Moore, Robert Plant and many more!
This week our pick is “The Rocky Road to Dublin.” Some people may know this tune from the 2009 film “Sherlock Holmes”. Seth’s version of the tune was performed by “The High Kings,” from their album “Memory Lane.” Katie’s was made by “The Orthodox Celts.”
Ideally this show would have came out sooner so everyone could have listened to it on St Paddys Day, but a busy weekend followed by a Hendrix Tribute concert caused a slight delay in production. The timing for it, however, brings up a great lesson that its ok to enjoy Irish music the other 364 days of the year. Its kind of the same way one would continue to drink Guinness after St Paddys Day due to it being a very fine beverage. Well, this compilation showcases another fine Irish export, their music and musicians. I have tried to cover a pretty wide range of styles any where from the Celtic Rock of the Young Dubliners, to traditional Irish folk songs, as well as some U2 and Sinead OConnor. I hope that you enjoy it and if you are holding a Guinness feel free to raise it for a toast. Slainte! Support the artists by buying music and watching them live!
