Welcome everyone and Happy New Year. I hope that 2023 has great things in store for all of you and of the many resolutions you have probably made over the past few days, I hope that you stick to some of them. A little shopkeeping before we start. I hope to see all of you at the 2023 International Hoof Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio. That is January 24th to the 27th at the Duke Energy Center and the Hyatt Regency. If all goes as planned, I'm hoping to have a booth there for the first time this year with some swag for sale to help support the podcast. So, if you haven't already, go online to americanfarriers.com and click on the International Healthcare Summit link and buy your tickets. If you find yourself there, please stop by the booth and say hi. The summit is such a cool opportunity to learn from and network with so many good folks from our trade. I hope to see you there. Well, as you probably gathered from his introduction, today's guest is from across the pond in Scotland. He was one of the judges of the International at Stoneleigh this year. Over that weekend I had several conversations with Ian and he is, as you will hear, a very easygoing fellow and great to talk to. Despite some hardships that he has come across, his mantra of adapting and overcoming has helped him to carry on through this time. I found it quite inspirational and wanted to share his story with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

It was just a few weeks ago that I had the chance to walk into the Duke Energy Center for the first time in 14 months. I wasn’t there for a show, but I was there to chat with its Director Kerry Painter and take a tour. Just this month, the complex opened its doors to patrons with in-person symphony and pine cone music performances starting up again for the first time in just over a year. And while patrons returning to the venue will experience the same caliber of great performances they have come to expect from the building’s resident companies and guest artists, there have been some notable changes to all of the facilities that are just a sign of the times.  Even since Painter and I spoke, the governor has issued new guidelines, which not only removes the mask mandate but also allows facilities to open at 100-percent capacity. While the Duke Energy Center continues to strongly encourage the use of face masks, certain events may still require them along with a wellness screening upon entry. And some events may still operate at a reduced capacity to accommodate pod seating. In those cases, ticket purchasers will be notified in advance and that information will be notated on the Duke Energy Center website. If you’ve ever looked at the Charlotte skyline at night, you might have noticed that sometimes all of the buildings are lit up the same color — all red for Valentine’s Day or all blue for a Panthers game. “I noticed -- probably along I-77 when I was driving -- that the lights all seemed to be coordinated. So I was curious about how or why that happened,” said Jamie Brown, of Mooresville, adding that she probably first noticed the color coordination when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl in 2016. Brown wrote to FAQ City and asked: Who coordinates the lights on Charlotte’s skyscrapers? 'Make The Building Just Sparkle' One of Charlotte’s most recognizable buildings is the Duke Energy Center. Bob Bertges said it was his idea to add customizable lights when the building was under construction in the mid- to late 2000s. On December 22nd, Theatre Raleigh will be bringing Broadway star Ariana DeBose back home to Raleigh, North Carolina to give not one, but two concerts at the Kennedy Theatre located inside Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts for one night only. She may be currently out in L.A. filming Ryan Murphy's upcoming Netflix movie adaptation of THE PROM, but luckily, I was recently able to get in touch with her by phone for this interview. After having made her breakthrough as a contestant on the sixth season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE back in 2009, Ariana DeBose would go on to make her Broadway debut in a stage musical adaptation of BRING IT ON in the summer of 2012. Since then, she has appeared on Broadway in MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL, the most recent revival of PIPPIN, and the original cast of HAMILTON before going on to originate two principal roles: Jane in A BRONX TALE and Disco Donna in SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL, the latter of which earned her a 2018 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Next year, Ariana will be seen on the big screen in two major movie musicals directed by some very high profile filmmakers: not only as Alyssa Greene in Ryan Murphy's THE PROM, but also as Anita in Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY. The story of The Scottsboro Boys, which began in 1931 and evolved over the course of 80 plus years, has inspired books, documentaries, songs, movies, and even a Broadway musical. But the significance of this case transcends pop culture and speaks to racial injustice in this country in a way that feels timely and relevant for right now. About the Guest Moses T. Alexander Greene is an unconventional playwright, cultural arts producer, performer, and artistic director whose commitment to the arts and creative scholarship continues to impact a myriad of landscapes. A sixth-generation New Yorker (Long Island), he is a double graduate of Syracuse University with a Master’s in New Media Management and a dual Bachelor’s in African American Studies and Writing for Television, Radio, and Film. He has served as Chief Communications Officer/Assistant Professor of Media & Film at Saint Augustine’s University. In 2013, he was one of 20 educators nationwide named as a Fellow of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (EMMY) Foundation. As an arts advocate, Greene currently serves Raleigh in several capacities: vice-chair of the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, chair of the Commission’s Racial Equity, Access and Inclusion Task Force and board member of the African American Cultural Festival of Raleigh and Wake County. He is also the visionary behind Nia Kuumba, a special audition that provides singers and actors of various ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and gender identities as well as performers with disabilities with an opportunity to audition for over 30 local and regional professional and community theatres at one time. After two years serving as director of the African American Cultural Center at NC State, Greene recently resigned to pursue producing cultural arts programs full-time, including serving as artistic director of Li V Mahob Productions, a Raleigh-based theater company he founded in 2018. As artistic director of https://www.facebook.com/LiVMahobProductions/ (Li V Mahob), he is committed to uplifting narratives of the diverse experiences of African Americans and African diasporic cultures through performance art. The first production of the company, a work written by Greene called POOLED, held its world premiere that February at the Kennedy Theater of the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. The National Black Theatre Festival named POOLED as “one of the best 25 black theatre productions of the U.S., Africa, Europe and the Caribbean” and selected it as a main stage production. Greene is also the dramaturg and historian for Theatre Raleigh’s production of ‘The Scottsboro Boys’.
