What do you get when you mix Broadway royalty with sci-fi cloning, environmental theater, and a dash of boogie-woogie piano? A wildly entertaining conversation with the legendary Terrence Mann. From his earliest days growing up in a musical household to helping launch the North Carolina Theatre, Terry's journey is packed with passion, persistence, and a whole lot of timing. He shares the story behind how he actually got cast in Cats (it involves London and a royal connection), and how he practically willed his way into Les Misérables after being told multiple times they didn't want to see him. His advice for young performers? “Have no fear, there are no wrong choices, and be specific”—words he lives by and teaches. Now back on stage in Broadway's The Great Gatsby as Meyer Wolfsheim, Terrence opens up about what it feels like to return to the theater after years in “Foundation land,” filming Apple TV's epic sci-fi series. We also dive into his work as a director, educator, and his longtime love for North Carolina's historic Lost Colony production. And yes, we play a game of Plot in 60 Seconds, get a surprise cameo from iOS balloons, and bond over the beautiful chaos of 1980s New York auditions. This episode is packed with decades of wisdom and a whole lot of heart. Terrence Mann is a three-time Tony nominee best known for originating iconic roles such as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Misérables, and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. His Broadway credits also include Pippin, Tuck Everlasting, The Addams Family, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Rags. On screen, he's appeared in Sense8, all four Critters films, and currently stars as Brother Dusk in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Foundation. He's also an accomplished director, educator, and co-founder of Triple Arts, a musical theater training program. Back in 2016, North Carolina Theatre was getting ready to present a production of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-Winning play, WIT. Prior to that, I was able to get in touch with one of its stars, Daisy Eagan. With 3 Broadway credits to her name, Daisy made her main stem debut as a child in the original production of LES MISÉRABLES as a former Young Cosette and Young Éponine. Her last appearance was in JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD from way back in 2000. Though she is perhaps best known for originating the role of Mary Lennox in Lucy Simon & Marsha Norman's 1991 stage musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel, THE SECRET GARDEN. Daisy not only got to be in a cast that also included Mandy Patinkin, Rebecca Luker, Robert Westenberg, Alison Fraser, and John Cameron Mitchell, but at just 11 years old, she became the youngest female to have ever won a Tony Award. *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. Up until barely a week before North Carolina Theatre's "9 to 5" opened--its first large production since pandemic restrictions began in 2020--Eric Woodall, the show's director and NCT's Producing Artistic Director, hadn't even seen the faces of all the cast members, since they were still practicing in masks. The precautions, the long layoff, the "what ifs" of constantly testing waiting for results are all part of getting back to the stage. But they're balanced by an excitement and enthusiasm to be back to performing before live audiences.Eric has seen the development of Raleigh's theater scene over 40 years and now has the extremely large but extremely fun task of selecting the shows, picking the cast and putting on the 6 yearly productions for NC Theatre's season. We talked with him about the larger Raleigh theatre scene, as well as what folks can expect with a return to shows for NCT and what it means to be a professional equity theatre. Please support the businesses who support us: Papa Murphy's Take N Bake Pizza of Raleigh and Steele Residential.Subscribe to Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites so you never miss an episode, and if you enjoy it we'd love for you to rate or read a comment:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yeiStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP

Laurel Harris is an actress and native of Raleigh, North Carolina who I was lucky enough to have seen on stage twice before in the Triangle area back in 2015. First, as Elphaba in the national tour of WICKED at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Then, as The Baker’s Wife in North Carolina Theatre’s production of INTO THE WOODS. On Broadway, she has appeared in EVITA, IN TRANSIT, and BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL. Though most recently, she was seen in the ensemble of the now Tony nominated musical, JAGGED LITTLE PILL. I had the great pleasure of interviewing her about what she's been up to in the months since Broadway shutdown, her reaction to the show's Tony Award nominations, and more. LEO ASH EVENS is a Pittsburgh born and bred actor with a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Upon signing with his legit agents, CGF Talent defined him as "an enigma". A dynamic song and dance man as well as voice-over artist, signing with Innovative Artists in 2012, Leo enagages his sexy rasp for both rock ’n roll and commercial voice-overs. Currently, he is the voice of Siemens Technology. In his 10th year with MTCA (Musical Theatre College Auditions), Leo has evolved from monologue coach to Assistant Director and is now a proud Co-Director and Co-Owner of the team with partners Ellen Lettrich (Founder), and Charlie Murphy. Leo loves guiding his students to trust their own work and their process, finding the right program and positioning themselves for success in the professional world. Broadway credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (debut); Shuffle Along…(standby for Brooks Ashmanskas, and later taking over the role) directed by George C. Wolfe, choreographed by Savion Glover; and the vacation swing for School of Rock, where he channeled a touch of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jem of Jem and the Holograms in his spiky blonde wig. Leo's proudest role to date is the Emcee in Cabaret, winning Best Actor in the Houston Excellence Awards while performing at Houston TUTS. Leo later reprised his role at The Arvada Center in Denver, Colorado. It's the gritty roles that really ignite him. And in a close second place - playing the deliciously deplorable Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher. Leo’s had the honor of working with theatre legends Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Shirley Jones, and Audra McDonald. He treasured the world premiere play, Somewhere, starring Priscilla Lopez, at The Old Globe in San Diego, in which he originated the role of Jamie McRea. Off-Broadway, Leo originated roles in two premiere plays which have since successfully been published. Bobby in Finks by Joe Gilford and Pluto in Jasper in Deadland by Hunter Foster and Ryan Scott Oliver. Leo played Riff in West Side Story several times: for Alan Johnson (50th Anniversary Tour); Joey McNeely (London); as well as for Joshua Bergasse (Gypsy of The Year, Recording Academy Honors, Barrington Stage, and North Carolina Theatre). He is thrilled to be part of this legacy and pass it on through educational workshops. Maybe he'll even try his hand at directing it one day... Showbiz highlight: In 2016, Leo met his idol, The Great Lady of Comedy - Carol Burnett, after her show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Inspired by her hilarious, honest, and wry characters, he always admires her compassionate way of sharing herself with her audiences. Leo is the proud son of Earl and Amy, brother of Sarah, and Uncle of Violet! (He's gonna post some Instagram duos of himself and Violet soon - she'll steal your heart!) He gleaned his green thumb from his parents, and hence, time with his house plants, the community garden, and lush walks in Central Park near his apartment on the Upper West Side are a must! Someday soon, Leo wants to adopt a Wheaten Terrier. Businesswoman, artist, mother, Janis Joplin fan...and the 4th executive director in NC Theatre's 32-year history. All of these things describe Elizabeth Doran, though it's clear she wouldn't want to be defined by one singular term. She is on a mission to deliver the kind of theatre that Raleigh wants and needs, and she's devoted a lot of time and a lot of her life to figuring out exactly what that is. It could be popular, well-loved Broadway shows and it could also include performances and messaging the audience never saw coming.NC Theatre's production of 'Annie' runs this July and we talked to Doran about that, other shows coming up, and a whole lot of other things regarding her role and Raleigh's theatre scene. We also made a (short, underwhelming) list of our #Top3Raleigh theater venues, and discussed what's interesting on a holiday week in Raleigh, including breaking water mains and a potential renters vs. property owners discussion brewing on the city level. Please support the local businesses who support us: Steele Residential and Express Yourself Paint.
