It's Thursday, April 10th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Sharp rise in persecution of Christians in Pakistan A new report from Human Rights Focus Pakistan documented a sharp rise in victimization rates against religious minorities in Pakistan during the first three months of this year.  Religious minorities, including Christians, faced more attacks, murders, blasphemy charges, abductions, forced conversions, and forced marriages.  Jeff King, president of International Christian Concern, said, “Pakistan's latest wave of atrocities against Christians in 2025 is not an aberration — it's a grotesque culmination of centuries of state-sanctioned brutality and indifference.” As of January, at least 20 Christians have been imprisoned for their faith in the Islamic country. Pakistan is ranked eighth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.   Barcelona, Spain looking to close 17 Evangelical churches Evangelical Focus reports that 17 Evangelical churches are facing the threat of closure in Barcelona, Spain. This comes as the local government plans urban development that will affect buildings that churches own or rent. The Evangelical Council of Catalonia warns this could leave thousands of believers without a place to worship. Guillem Correa, the executive director of the group, said, “We understand that the case affects freedom of worship, and what characterizes the exercise of this right is that people can meet in the place of worship throughout the week. Without this, there is no religious freedom and no community life.” Man guilty of targeting churches with fake bombs In the United States, a federal jury returned a guilty verdict last Thursday for a 45-year-old man convicted of targeting churches. Zimnako Salah left fake bombs at churches in Arizona and California in 2023. Authorities discovered he was also building an actual bomb. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “This Department of Justice has no tolerance for anyone who targets religious Americans for their faith. The perpetrator of this abhorrent hate crime against Christians will face severe punishment.” Psalm 5:4-6 says, “For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” Trump's 90-day pause on tariffs except China President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for imports from most nations yesterday.  Trump's baseline tariff of 10% remains in place. Meanwhile, much of the additional “reciprocal” tariffs are on hold as countries negotiate with the United States. CNBC carried Trump's remarks on the White House lawn to reporters. TRUMP: “Last year, China made $1 trillion off trade with the United States. That's not right. And now I've reversed it for a short period of time, but we're making now $2 billion a day. Somebody had to do it. “Charles Schwab was here a little while ago, one of the great financial people. He said he's been waiting for 40 years for somebody to do what I did over the last month, and if you didn't do it, you wouldn't have a country. It wouldn't be sustainable. “So, I'm honored to have done it. Nothing is over yet, but we have tremendous amount of spirit from other countries, including China. China wants to make a deal. They just don't know how quite to go about it. They're proud people. President Xi is a proud man. I know him very well, and they don't know quite how to go about it, but they'll figure it out. They want to make a deal. “We have many other countries, as you know. Many more than 75. They're all calling, ‘How do we do this?' They all want to make a deal. I did a 90-day pause for the people that didn't retaliate, because I told them, ‘If you retaliate, we're going to double it.'  And that's what I did with China, because they did retaliate.” Indeed, China was the one country which is not getting relief. Trump said he would raise tariffs on imports from China to 125%. TRUMP: “They will be fair deals for everybody, but they weren't fair to the United States. They were sucking us dry, and you can't do that. We have $36 trillion of debt for a reason.  People took advantage of our country, and they ripped us off for decades.” Stocks surge U.S. stock markets surged in response to Trump's 90-day pause on tariffs.  The S&P 500 rose 8.5% yesterday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up over 7%, and the Nasdaq Composite surged 11%. Big tech companies led much of the stock market rally. Nvidia stock was up 15%. Tesla was up 17%. And Apple, Amazon, and Meta were up about 10%.  Lowe's closes on Resurrection Sunday Lowe's is closing its stores nationwide for this coming Resurrection Sunday.  The home improvement chain will close its 1,700 locations on April 20 and give its 300,000 employees a paid day off.   Lowe's CEO Marvin Ellison said, “In recognition of our teams' continued hard work, we are pleased to provide a well-deserved day off so they can spend Easter with their loved ones.” It's the sixth year in a row that Lowe's has done this.  Send a thank you note to Marvin Ellison to let him know you appreciate that. Send it to: Marvin Ellison, Lowe's, 1000 Lowe's Blvd, Mooresville, NC 28117. 66% of U.S. adults have made a personal commitment to Jesus And finally, George Barna released its State of the Church 2025 report.  The study found 66% of U.S. adults say they have made a personal commitment to Jesus that is still important in their life today, That's up from 54% in 2021 but similar to what it was 20 years ago. This growth was fueled by young people, especially young men.  Sixty to seventy percent of men from the Gen Z and Millennial cohorts said they have made a personal commitment to follow Jesus that is still important today. However, many who made these commitments don't necessarily identify as Christian, indicating a patchwork of religious beliefs and identities.  Lamentations 3:40-41 reminds us, “Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the LORD; let us lift our hearts and hands to God in Heaven.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, April 10th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Local newspapers are disappearing left and right. Even when they still exist, they're increasingly owned by private equity firms or subject to corporate consolidation, making them local in name only. This is a problem. It's a problem for democracy. Research has found that after private equity takes over local papers, voter turnout drops. People are more likely to vote straight ticket for the party they like, instead of voting based on local issues. Political polarization goes up. There's more corruption in government and business. And people trust the media less overall. (See Paper Cuts to learn more.)But it's not all doom and gloom. Martinsville, Indiana, population 11 thousand, has a new paper in town. It's a print newspaper. The Morgan County Correspondent. It started in August 2023. And it's doing pretty darn well. Stephen Crane is the founding editor. And publisher. And reporter. I went up to the Correspondent's offices a couple weeks ago to talk with him. He told me what happened to the newspapers in Morgan County, where Martinsville is the county seat. Martinsville had a newspaper, and so did Mooresville, in the north of the county. They still do. In theory at least. Today's headline in The Reporter-Times, which was Martinsville's city paper, is about the Princess Theatre building's new owner. The Princess Theatre is in Bloomington. Looks like most of the other articles are also about Bloomington. Stephen and I also talked about how he got into journalism – he says he had some authority issues when he was younger, and his decision to start a paper two years ago is not unconnected. We talked about the differences between locally-owned papers and corporate-owned, the experience of reading a print paper vs online, and why he doesn't care too much about attracting readers under 40.

It certainly feels good to help others in need. We donate food, money, and even time to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. And, oftentimes we assume that we have done what's best for them. But was it the best for them? Or, was it something that made us feel good in the moment? This is a tough question to ponder and our guest on this episode shares some incredible insights and wisdom to help us tackle it. Guest Info Kevin Ward is the Director of Youth, Young Adults, and Missions at Williamson's Chapel UMC in Mooresville, NC.  He is married to Amy Ward and has two children, Anna and James.  Service and mission is not only important to Kevin but to his whole family.     Kevin has worked in the United Methodist Church full-time or part-time for 27 years.  Throughout the last 27 years, connecting folks to healthy missions has been a passion of Kevins.  Having led or participated in over 40 week-long mission trips, Kevin has seen missions done in both healthy and unhealthy ways.  Reflecting on how mission trips and work have impacted both those serving and those being served has helped Kevin develop a healthier model of mission and service work.     Kevin believes that being involved in mission and service is something that every Christian is called to do on an ongoing basis.  Mission and service should move beyond charity and into something woven to our faith's fabric.  It may get messy, but in the mess is where we most often find Jesus.     Some suggested reading on the subject: "From Relief to Empowerment" by Laceye Warner and Gaston Warner "When Helping Hurts" by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert "Toxic Charity" by Robert Lupton "Get off Your Donkey!" It's Wednesday, August 28th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Muslims murdered Ugandan evangelist for his faith Morning Star News reports that Muslim extremists killed a Christian in eastern Uganda last Monday.  Yowabu Sebakaki died for his faith after leading Muslims to Christ. He received threatening messages like this one. The hostile person wrote, “We are aware of some secret meetings you are undertaking. You have to stop preaching as well as converting our faithful Muslims to Christianity, and if not, then soon we are coming for your life.” However, the 52-year-old evangelist continued his ministry. Assailants ambushed him as he returned to his village after a discipleship class. Revelation 12:11 says, “They overcame [the Devil] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” Please pray that the guilty Ugandan Muslims would both be brought to justice and repent of their sins and profess Jesus Christ as their Savior. New study on migrants worldwide A new study from Pew Research found over 280 million people, or 3.6% of the global population, are international migrants.  Of migrants living outside their country of birth, 47% are Christian, 29% are Muslim, 13% are religiously unaffiliated, 5% are Hindu, and 4% are Buddhist. Christian migrants tend to come from countries with a Christian presence but weaker economies than their neighbors like Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, and Ukraine. Most Christian migrants overwhelmingly end up coming to the U.S. followed by Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.  Overall, Christian migrants grew from 73 million in 1990 to 131 million in 2020, an 80% increase.  Tulsi Gabbard endorsed Trump Former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard  endorsed Donald Trump on Monday night at the National Guard Association Conference in Detroit, Michigan. Listen. GABBARD: “I know that President Trump understands the grave responsibility that a President and Commander-in-Chief bears for every single one of our lives. Whether you're a soldier, you're an airman, a Marine, sailor, or a Coastie, he keeps us in his heart, in the decisions that he makes. “We saw this through his first term in the presidency, when he not only didn't start any new wars, he took action to de-escalate and prevent wars. He exercised the courage that we expect from our Commander-in-Chief in exhausting all measures of diplomacy, having the courage to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies and partners alike in the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort. “The truth is, as we head towards our decision as a country in November, the same cannot be said about Kamala Harris. In fact, the opposite is true, and we are living through this reality today, as this administration has us facing multiple wars on multiple fronts and regions around the world and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before. “This is one of the main reasons why I'm committed to doing all that I can to send President Trump back to the White House, where he can once again serve us as our Commander in Chief.” (cheers and applause) IHOP fired Christian server for asking to take Sundays off In the U.S., an International House of Pancakes franchise reached a $40,000 settlement recently with an employee over religious discrimination. The employee started working for the franchise of the national breakfast restaurant chain back in 2021. He asked for Sundays off so he could go to church. Eventually, IHOP fired him. After the settlement, trial attorney Taitionna Miles said, “Religious discrimination is intolerable. Employers must respect all sincerely held religious beliefs, which includes providing reasonable accommodations when no undue hardship exists.”  Mark Zuckerberg confesses: Facebook should not have censored Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sent a letter on Monday to U.S. Congressman Jim Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. The tech billionaire acknowledged that the Biden administration repeatedly pressured Facebook to remove certain COVID-19 content. He wrote, “I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it.” Zuckerberg also said Facebook should not have censored the Hunter Biden laptop story leading up to the 2020 presidential election. Real wages are falling Pew Stateline analysis of data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found real wages are falling for most workers in recent years. Wages have risen about 10% in the U.S. since 2021. However, consumer prices have surged by over 17%.  High cost states like New York and California saw hundreds of thousands of people leaving for lower cost states. Meanwhile, some states saw wages outpacing inflation including Montana, New Hampshire, Florida, Washington, and Maine.  Lowe's ends participation in sexually perverted parades Lowe's is the latest U.S. company to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Reuters reports that the home improvement retailer will no longer participate in surveys for Human Rights Campaign, a group advocating for sexually perverted lifestyles. Lowe's used to support regional stores' participating in sexually perverted pride parades. Now, the company is reportedly changing its policy to no longer sponsor such parades or festivals.  You can thank Lowe's for saying no to sexually perverted parades by writing a two-sentence thank you note to Marvin Ellison, CEO, Lowe's, 1000 Lowe's Boulevard, Mooresville, NC 28117. Singing improves health for elderly citizens with coronary artery disease And finally, researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee released a study on how singing affects the health of elderly people. For the study, 65-year-old and older patients with a history of coronary artery disease sang along with a video for 30 minutes. The patients saw an improvement in microvascular endothelial function.  The study noted, “Singing should be considered as an accessible and safe therapeutic intervention in an older population who otherwise may have physical or orthopedic limitations hindering participation in traditional exercise.”  For the study, patients sang along to several different songs, including Amazing Grace. Patients who sang the classic hymn saw the greatest effect.  Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, August 28th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.
