For the 36th episode of "Reading the Art World," host Megan Fox Kelly speaks with Sarah Roberts, curator of the landmark exhibition "Amy Sherald: American Sublime," and editor of the accompanying catalog published by Yale University Press in association with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.Roberts discusses Sherald's revolutionary portraiture approach — from her distinctive gray-scale skin tones that shift focus to her subjects' interior lives, to her deliberate use of clothing and settings as narrative devices. She shares insights on the "American sublime" concept in Sherald's work and her curatorial decisions integrating the iconic Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor portraits within the larger context of the artist's practice. This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in contemporary portraiture, the evolution of American figurative painting, and how art can challenge conventional narratives about representation and identity. Roberts' insights reveal why Sherald's quiet yet radical artistic vision offers a powerful reimagining of who deserves to be seen and celebrated in American art history.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sarah Roberts is Senior Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Joan Mitchell Foundation where she oversees the Foundation's Artwork and Archival Collections and the Joan Mitchell Catalogue Raisonné project. Since 2004, she has served in progressive leadership roles in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the SFMOMA, and since 2020 as Andrew W. Mellon Curator and Head of Painting and Sculpture. A specialist in post-war American art, Roberts has organized significant exhibitions including major presentations of Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, Frank Bowling, and co-curated the Joan Mitchell retrospective that traveled internationally. Roberts holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Brown University, and has contributed to numerous publications on contemporary art.ABOUT THE EXHIBITION"Amy Sherald: American Sublime" is now on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York through August 3, 2025, following its run at SFMOMA. Christmas is the most wonderful time of year, and that usually involves carols, nativities, candlelight services and plenty of tradition. But not everyone is following these well-worn paths this year. Many are exploring creative ways of spreading the Christmas message. In this programme we'll meet Christians and churches who are trying to do something a little different this advent. First up we meet Dai Woolridge, spoken word poet, storyteller, and creative specialist at the Bible Society. We also speak to American author, singer, and songwriter, Andrew Peterson, who is bringing his Christmas Show to Cardiff. Finally, we visit two different churches in Cardiff, who are looking at new ways to take the old Christmas story to their communities: Judith Holliman and the members of Radyr Methodist Church, and Sarah Roberts from the Bridge Church, Pontprennau.

Kate Blackmore's feature length film debut, Make It Look Real, navigates the intricacies of utilising an intimacy coordinator on the set of a film. Kate follows intimacy coordinator Claire Warden as she embarks on the collaborative process of presenting sex on screen for Kieran Darcy-Smith's film Tightrope, which features three Australian actors who each are asked to simulate sex on screen in different ways.Throughout Make It Look Real, we see frank and open conversations between Claire, actors Sarah Roberts, Albert Mwangi, and Tom Davis, about the purpose of the sex scenes employed in Tightrope and how they play into the characters narratives. Then, we see conversations with Claire and Kieran and hear how they negotiate the progression of the narrative, leading Kieran to reflect on the third act threesome he had planned. In between these discussions, Claire and Kate take audiences on a journey through film history where we hear from actresses who have pushed themselves to unnecessary and unsafe places to work through a scene that features nudity or simulated sex scenes. What results is a documentary that takes a holistic approach to intimacy coordination and proposes a safer, more inclusive future where the rights and safety of the actors is considered on a foundational level. In the following interview, Kate talks through the process of intimacy coordination, how the concept of utilising a constructed film like Tightrope came about, and what Kate has experienced as a creative who has explored ideas like representation on screen and how that intertwines with body autonomy and respect. Kate also talks about how she hopes a film like Make It Look Real will be received by audiences.Make It Look Real is an Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund production and will premiere at the festival on Saturday 26 October where Kate, Sarah, Albert, and producer Bethany Bruce will be in attendance. Thanks to mentorship, Alexandra navigated the complexities of the real estate market and positioned herself as a capable and innovative leader. 090 - When dreams thunder into reality, it's a story you don't want to miss. Join me as I sit down with the electrifying Sarah Roberts, a professional barrel racer whose journey from a small Idaho town to the roaring arenas of rodeo is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Sarah didn't inherit a legacy of horse lovers; she carved her own path with determination and the support of a close friend. Her passion for the sport, kindled in her teenage years, has led her to a life where the roar of the crowd and the thrill of the chase are daily occurrences. As Sarah and I gallop through her life's narrative, you'll be gripped by the meticulous dance around the barrels and the work ethic instilled by her supportive parents, which transformed her from a stall cleaner to a top-tier competitor. Her bond with her husband Kole, also a rodeo competitor, emphasizes the partnership and strategy necessary in high-stakes barrel racing. Life on the road is relentless, and Sarah takes us behind the scenes to reveal the rigorous demands of year-round competition and the deep, almost spiritual connection she shares with her equine partners. Wrapping up with personal insights, Sarah's story is a testament to triumph, resilience, and faith. She's not just a competitor; she's an entrepreneur who balances the challenges of running a company while chasing her National Finals Rodeo dreams. Her parting wisdom to aspiring barrel racers echoes the spirit of her own journey: pursue your passion with everything you've got. And if you're as captivated by her story as I am, follow her on Instagram @sarah.ann.roberts for a front-row seat to the adventure. Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society.  In scripture, the Greek word "χάριτι" "phi-ti" refers to the quality of showing appreciation and returning kindness Once you realize that God is working in your life, you'll show gratefulness in how you live. The Bible mentions the word "gratitude" (χάριτι and other variations in Greek) 157 times. It does not appear as frequently as "fear not" (which is said 365 times), but it appears more than "thanks" or "thanksgiving" (mentioned 72 times). Yeah we hadn't either...) how to evaluate the spiritual health of a team/individual & why it matters five ways we can teach our young people how to shine, show and share Jesus. Sarah is a coach's wife, coach's daughter, and her life has literally been changed through Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) where she now serves on staff in the very ministry that led her to Jesus.  Sarah is in demand across the country, recently asked to speak encouragement to Coach Dabo Swinney and his Clemson football team, and she has regular bible studies with wives of NFL & NBA players, management and staff including the Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Jets.  Y'all will love how relatable and wise she truly is, and we are so excited to share this episode with you! Sarah's favorite bible study tools: Seamless by Angie Smith The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble The Tony Evans Bible Commentary  If you are new to bible reading, Sarah always recommends beginning with three books of the Bible: John (a gospel that tells Jesus' story relationally) Romans (a summary of the gospel reminding us we all fall short) James (how to live a Christian life, written by Jesus' half-brother) Two books Sarah reads every single year to rest her heart and mind (both by Alicia Britt Chole): 40 Days of Decrease: a Different Kind of Hunger..a Different Kind of Fast Anonymous: Jesus' Hidden Years...and Yours.... "We live in fast rhythms. This is an intentional way to reset, renew and be reminded that God is God and we are not him." Sarah's recommendation for leaders - how to lead from a healthy soul: Replenish by Lance Witt Sarah has a sign in her office that says "Studying the word of God is my passion, teaching it is my gift, but living it is my calling" We can impress people with our strengths but we connect with people through our struggles. God has given every single one of us a sphere of influence. Open your bible and start right there. Be intentional and look at the influence he has given you and how he wants to use you right there for his kingdom. One thing everybody has in common is we all want to be seen. Jesus was so good at sitting one on one and asking the right questions to make people feel seen and heard and valued. We can't lead others until we learn how to follow. Sarah Roberts welcomes you to come and sit by the fire and tell your precious story. She founded the Empty Cradle as a grief counsellor to help others find opportunity from unplanned childlessness. In this episode, we will explore the journey of Sarah Roberts, who transformed her grief of unplanned childlessness into an opportunity to help others. The desire to have a child is a natural and common aspiration for many people. However, sometimes life does not turn out as planned, and some individuals find themselves unable to conceive or carry a child to term. This experience is known as unplanned childlessness and can evoke profound grief and loss.Sarah had always assumed that having children would be part of her life, but infertility issues derailed that dream and she tried for 10 years to conceive. She was devastated by the loss and the realization for a time. There is a narrow fertility window, with peak fertility being 24 years old. After the age of 30, the chances of conceiving a child decrease by 50% significantly.Sarah's experience is not uncommon. Many more individuals are now facing the challenge of unplanned childlessness. The grief and loss associated with these experiences can be intense, leading to feelings of isolation, despair, and shame. However, Sarah's journey shows that there can be an opportunity for growth and transformation in the face of adversity. She decided to channel her energy and emotions into helping others who were going through similar struggles. She started a support group for individuals experiencing infertility and unplanned childlessness, which provided a safe and nurturing space for people to share their stories, feelings, and experiences.Sarah's journey highlights the importance of community and support in times of crisis. It also underscores the power of resilience and courage in the face of loss and adversity. Her story is a testament to the human capacity for healing, growth, and transformation. It is worth noting that while the fertility window is a reality, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to family planning.  Sarah Roberts' story is an example of how one person turned her pain into a source of healing and support for others. The fertility window is a real consideration, as we navigate a world where there is a large rise in unplanned childlessness.Link here to learn more about Sarah Roberts and her work.https://www.theemptycradle.com/home.html Support the showLearn more at www.profselenabartlett.com

For Black History Month, we're dropping a classic episode into the feed as a bonus every few days... The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts ruled on Roberts v Boston 170 years ago this month. When five year old Sarah Roberts was turned away from the schoolhouse door in Boston simply because of the color of her skin, her father sued the city in an attempt to force the public schools to desegregate, in compliance with a state law that had been intended to do just that years before. Unfortunately, the suit was unsuccessful. Not only did the Boston schools remain segregated, but the court's decision provided the legal framework of “separate but equal,” which would be used to justify segregated schools across the country for a century to come.
