In this latest episode, Libby is joined by Kyle Zimmer, Health and Safety Director with the Operating Engineers at Local 478, who has been passionately working towards improving worker well-being, mental health, and addressing substance abuse issues for over 15 years. Today, Kyle shares his journey of developing a peer program for both construction and general industry to tackle addiction, suicide prevention, and mental health challenges. His conversation with Libby highlights the cultural changes in the industry over the years and the importance of workplace peers who care, show compassion, and provide support to their colleagues. They also discuss the impact of the opioid crisis and how it brought awareness to the need for assistance programs and resources. Emphasizing the importance of breaking the stigma around mental health, Kyle is here today to encourage more peers on the job site to provide support and recommend further care when needed.   Episode Highlights: Kyle Zimmer shares his 20-year journey with Local 478 Operating Engineers and the focus on worker well-being, mental health, and substance abuse issues Cultural changes in the construction and general industry over the years and how they addressed the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) The emergence of lifestyle issues, such as addiction, suicide prevention, and mental health, and the industry's response to tackle these challenges The role of workplace peers in supporting colleagues, recognizing struggles, and providing help and resources The three C's and the three R's that define a workplace peer's approach to providing support and care to those in need The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and the importance of continuing to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues The accessibility of being a workplace peer and the significance of staying with the person, having conversations, and recommending resources for further care Toolbox Talk Discussion Questions: In this episode, Kyle talks about some of the changes in workplace culture he has seen over his career. Have you noticed any of the cultural shifts he spoke about, or any others?   Kyle describes what it means to be a workplace peer. Does anyone have a story about a time where they were supported by their peers, or they gave support to others?   How do you think a formal workplace peer program would work at our site? Would you be interested in participating, why or why not?     Quotes: "The biggest cultural change I was involved in was in the late 70s, early 80s, when we went to shore up the wearing of PPE... That was probably the biggest thing that started changes in both construction and general industry." "The opioid crisis surely played a big part in people reaching out for help... things started happening. People were reaching out for help, both on the labor side and the management side. We realized we had a problem. We couldn't continue this way." "The best way to address this is through workplace peers, people that care about other people." "Being a peer is not rocket science. It's caring, compassion, and concern. And we all have that in us." "Encourage people to be peers, be there for their coworkers and friends, and then help them take that next step in making recommendations for further care." Since our last episode, the Royals haven't won a game and the bullpen continues to be an issue. The Royals made a number of moves, including sending Kyle Zimmer to Triple-A and calling up Richard Lovelady. But the veterans in the bullpen have struggled while the starting rotation and offense have been mostly okay. We discussed what might be next for this struggling group and how it lines up with the big picture. Of course, it's not all gloom. Lovelady dealt in his debut. Ryan O'Hearn and Hunter Dozier are hitting the ball hard. Adalberto Mondesi has adjusted after a bad road trip, and the big story is Whit Merrifield's hitting streak, which reached a franchise-record 31 games after we went off air. The Royals made a couple more moves since our last episode, so we recapped the dearly departed, including some minor league free agents. But with new free agents come new signings, so we discussed the signing of post-hype prospect Michael Ynoa to a minor-league deal. It's low-risk, high-reward, which is right in line with how the Royals should approach the offseason. Once 2019 starts, though, the Royals may show some new flexibility within the pitching staff. Comments from Dayton Moore suggest some openness to experimenting with the bullpen and how some players are used. The Royals might - gasp - go a bit outside the book next season. With a lot of arms available, but no marquee names projected for the big club, we weighed the pros and cons, and speculated about how long the experiments might actually last when all is said and done.Follow the Vault at @KCBaseballVault. How do we foster big, creative ideas to solve our most urgent problems? President, CEO and co-founder of First Book Kyle Zimmer and award-winning DC restaurateur Ashok Bajaj join Billy and Debbie Shore to discuss their philosophies on giving back and outlooks on our social and political culture. Zimmer worries that today’s partisan divide is fostering an environment where social problems are outpacing solutions. “In the non-profit world, we all have that white-knuckle death grip on our steering wheels and we’re not given the bandwidth to really think of creative, great big solutions,” she says. As a person dedicated to hospitality in today’s hyper-partisan Washington DC, Bajaj wants his restaurants to be seen as non-partisan sanctuaries and is dismayed by recent news of restaurants refusing service based on politics. “Sharing food, sitting in a social setting, brings us together. How do you know [a person coming into a restaurant] is not trying to change her mind and something good comes out of those two-hour conversations?,” says Bajaj. Bajaj sees the increased need from underserved communities in the sheer number of requests for help that he receives every day. “There’s no set formula, we do as much as we can,” he says. Zimmer - who has been supporting underserved communities through First Book for more than 25 years by getting 175M books to kids in 30 countries - sees the ripple effect these programs create. “The kids get self-confidence. They get employable skills. It’s good for our democracy. When a community solves these fundamental issues, the community is more stable,” she notes. We discussed the meaning of early-season stats - that is, that there isn't much meaning yet - and what stood out from four chilly games. We also talked about the roster moves that lead to the opening day roster and since game 1, including the curious DFA and trade of Miguel Almonte, and the DFA waiving of Kyle Zimmer. Finally, we talked about the Royals early approach of increasing defensive shifts and if it's something that's here to stay or if shifts might be actually bad.Follow the Vault at @KCBaseballVault. This week, we looked at the first week of spring training and the early signs regarding some spring training position battles. There aren't many, but second base has a trio (a quartet!?) of players who could see time there in 2017. We discuss Raul Mondesi, Christian Colon, Whit Merrifield, and - hey, it could happen - Cheslor Cuthbert. We also talked about the fifth starter spot. It seems like it's Nathan Karns's job to lose, but Travis Wood has a shot, as does Chris Young, and all three have good numbers after one appearance each.We also covered Kyle Zimmer and what expectations should be going forward. This week Channing and I helped kick off Disney’s Magic of Storytelling campaign, an ongoing initiative aimed at inspiring imagination and a lifelong love of reading. We went to a special event at our local Disney store to join Elena of Avalor in reading our favorite books! While we were there I got to interview a member of the Royal Guard. Jorge Diaz voices the character of "Gabe" on Elena of Avalor and shared with me what it's like to be a part of such a ground breaking animated series. He also talked about how his own life was inspired by books his mother read to him as a child. Books are so important to fostering the imagination and learning about new ideas and cultures. I can't wait until Chan starts reading on her own. I think she's going to be reading EVERYTHING. Do you have a kid who's really into books?  I think I have one, she just doesn't know it yet. “We are so proud to have donated more than 57 million books through our long-standing collaboration with Disney,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “Each year, the excitement around the Magic of Storytelling campaign grows, inspiring millions of individuals to help us bring much-needed new books to children in need.” Here's how you can participate in Disney's Magic of Storytelling campaign: One for One Book Donation: Disney will donate one book to First Book for every eligible Disney book purchased at a Disney Store or participating retailer during that store’s participation window.  (A list of eligible Disney books and participating retailers are available at magicofstorytelling.com.) Share a Shelfie: Disney will also give one book for every “shelfie” — a selfie photo with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf — shared on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling. Disney Story Central: Users of Disney’s digital reading platform can download digital books designed for parents and children to read together. Disney will donate one book to First Book for every book read in the app. Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes: Consumers can enter to win a library of 400 Disney books for their school and a personal library for their home in the Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes. For every sweepstakes entry, Disney will donate one book to First Book. To enter the sweepstakes and for more rules and information, visit magicofstorytelling.com. In-Store Events: Celebrate Disney Reads Day on February 4 at Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, and participating retailer locations nationwide. Families and fans can enjoy free family-friendly events like story time, coloring and activity sheets, and themed “shelfie” stations. A full list of participating Disney Store and retailer locations is available at magicofstorytelling.com. The program kicked off this month with a PSA narrated by Emma Watson, star of The Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming film “Beauty and the Beast,” coming to theaters on March 17. Over the past 16 years, Disney has donated 57 million books to First Book. Together with First Book, Disney Publishing Worldwide and Disney|ABC Television Group are committed to placing up to one million more books in the hands of children in need across the country.

The Royals have opened the second half with a stumble, losing two winnable games in Detroit, then getting hammered in two losses back home against Cleveland. They sit at .500 as of this recording and are nine games out of first. There's still time, but the Royals are going to have to find some pitching help. Their regulars are inconsistent, and the fifth spot is a nightmare. Will it come from the minors? Will it come via trade? We argue that the help is more likely to come from a trade and go over some names and approaches. We're hoping the Royals will right the ship, but it's probably going to require a change somewhere. But first, we did some transaction cleanup, including Emilio Bonifacio's impending release, the Carlos Peguero trade, and sneaking Everett Teaford back to Omaha. We also talked about baseball finances and reading the pitching market. Dayton Moore has a pattern of jumping out ahead and signing players before the market fully develops and it might hurt in 2014. Then, we discussed the rehab progress of Felipe Paulino and what contributions he might make this year. That also led to a discussion of Danny Duffy‘s potential addition this year. Tommy John surgery rehab is tricky and while some pitchers come back within a year, some don’t get fully comfortable until much later. Paulino’s had some setbacks, so we had to consider that in assessing his potential role this year. Of course, the rotation is full right now, so that’s another question.
