On deck: (6:49) Football fans! The NFL playoffs are just about here! I'll preview all of what Wild Card Weekend will have to offer, with plenty of huge storylines and go through all of the games with analysis and predictions to get you ready for six games over three days. Is Lamar Jackson & Josh Allen under the most pressure? What about Mike Tomlin? The health of Jalen Hurts? The psyche on the Vikings? All of those will be answered and an update on the latest head coach firings in the sport. (40:25) The college football playoff resumes over the next couple of nights. Similar to the NFL, I'll break down the key points of both games (Notre Dame-Penn St. and Ohio St.-Texas) and ask the bigger question, is this Ohio State's title to lose? Also, what is the National Championship game that the world wants to see? (51:54) Are you sold on the Cleveland Cavaliers being an NBA title contender? They snapped the 15 game winning streak of the OKC Thunder last night and now are in the middle of an eleven game win streak. Do you need to see more? I'll keep you posted on some big returns (I.e. Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero) and one big injury (Kyrie Irving) and what else is happening on the hard court. (1:02:02)The NHL will have two outdoor games scheduled for next January and February, both of those contests…in Florida? I'll dissect the Rangers visiting Miami to play in loanDepot Park (aka Marlins Park) and the Lightning hosting the Bruins in Raymond James Stadium (the Buccaneers home stadium) as they were granted dates to be played under sunshine and palm trees? I'll check the schedule over the weekend and keep you abreast of what's going on throughout the league. (1:11:11) Baseball is rather quiet with just a few transactions to discuss, that don't include Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Anthony Santander, Tanner Scott, etc. There was a sad passing as former Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz died at the age of 37. (1:13:19) Tennis is back in our consciousness as the first Grand Slam tournament of the year (the Australian Open) is just about here. Will Carlos Alcaraz complete his career slam? Can Jannik Sinner go back to back Aussie titles? What about Aryna Sabalenka going for a three peat down under? Is Iga Swiatek ready to claim her status of #1 woman in the world? You'll get my thoughts on all of the above as we usher in another sport to the podcast over the next two weeks. Today's Cast: Dan, Stu, David, Roy, Billy, Jess Jeremy. David Samson is here to start the show and he's up to his old self-destructive behavior with his giant bag of candy and interesting breakfast choice. It leads us into an argument about who is eating all the food at Meadowlark Media and to Dan's surprise, the call may be coming from inside the house. After that, we turn to David for more insight on a crazy day at MLB's Winter Meetings that included the New York Yankees splashing the cash for Max Fried in the wake of losing out on Juan Soto. Plus, the Miami Marlins had a brutal day that included losing the Draft Lottery and trading Jake Burger, and Billy and Jeremy are here to provide their reaction. Then, David tells us about the heist taking place inside Marlins Park and what it feels like to see $662 million hit your bank account. Learn more about your ad choices. David Samson joins the show to discuss our interview with Tim Walz from yesterday and shares his critiques. Dan explains why we did not get to more policy questions with Walz, while Stu defends the show for doing the show we have always done. Then, we transition back into sports and David tells us how he would have handled the New York Yankees fans who interfered with Mookie Betts last night as well as how many people he had to ban from Marlins Park during his tenure as president. Plus, Marlins Man had some ridiculous requests for ownership, David ended up with John Henry's party bus and David makes the most ridiculous bet of all time with us. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's word of the day is ‘Marlins Park' as in Shohei Ohtani as in 50/50 club as in home run as in stolen base as in history. What a game for Ohtani! 6 for 6. 3 homers. 10 rbi. Just an unbelievable achievement … at Marlins Park! (13:00) MLB postseason update! (16:20) NPPOD. (20:42) So You Wanna Talk to Samson!? Someone asked me about Dan Campbell having to sell his house because a fan doxxed him and his family. WHAT? (33:50) Review: Greedy People. (37:20) Texas has some problems. Not real ones but the outside noise can be loud and distracting. Arch Manning is in. Quinn Ewers is hurt. (45:30) The WNBA moment is continuing. A new team in Portland. Playoffs starting with Caitlin Clark. Why are the games starting during an NFL Sunday? What? (49:35) We end the week with the San Francisco Giants. Eliminated from playoffs. Still in the muck of this sports dead zone, but that'll keep me on my toes as I conclude the week with another fun filled podcast. On deck: (2:42) Just a little housekeeping as I released the latest vlog for my YouTube channel (@JAYREELZ) with Part 2, Escape To Florida: Miami! It's not just a vlog, it's a MOVIE, with lots of interesting stuff documented, including me visiting the former Marlins Park to watch Mets-Marlins in person. Plus, my friendly reminder to visit OLIPOP to get your discount on a healthy sods for your gut. Please see above. (5:17) Baseball hasn't changed much in the days since the last podcast. The most intriguing story coming out of yesterday is the Mets huge win over the Orioles to take the series before heading out West, in what I believe, is a make or break road trip. Four games in San Diego, followed by three in Arizona, two teams ahead of them in the Wild Card chase. I'll talk about some critical injuries to key players on teams looking to punch their ticket to October, (Braves Austin Riley, Orioles Zach Eflin, Yankees Luis Gil) and some anticipated returns, (Astros Justin Verlander and Dodgers Yoshinobu Yamamoto). I'll peek at the latest playoff picture, the upcoming weekend schedule and the retirement of Reds 1B Joey Votto. (30:08) The NFL will conclude their preseason schedule this weekend as we stand by for Week 1 just two weeks from Sunday. I'll get into the rookie QB's that have been anointed starters (I.e. Commanders Jayden Daniels & Broncos Bo Nix) What about Bears Caleb Williams and Patriots Drake Maye? Then you have the Tua Tagovailoa-Brian Flores feud that was revealed this week. Did Tua do the right thing to address this with the media? How about how Brian Flores handled this? (37:38) College football commences on Saturday as Florida State will play Georgia Tech, but the season in earnest starts on August 31st. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and his assistant both receive a one game suspension for violating recruitment protocol with QB Cade McNamara. (41:26) Some sad news in the NBA as longtime Warriors fixture in the organization as a player, coach and executive, Al Attles dies at the age of 87, (43:39) There was a trade in the NHL as Patrik Laine wanted out of Columbus and got shipped to Montreal for a defenseman. Was that where Laine wanted to go? (45:35) The final Grand Slam of tennis will take place on Monday. Thankfully, Jannik Sinner will NOT be suspended for testing positive TWICE for a steroid. How he was able to avoid time off? Speaking of Sinner, if he were to get to a final and win, he'll have Carlos Alcaraz on his side of the draw, with Novak Djokovic standing in his way to win the US Open? I'll have more on this when we reconvene on Monday's podcast. From "most disappointing" to "MVP," there were 11 award categories, voted on by the fans on FishStripes.com and Twitter. As covered in a new article, Marlins Park attendance perked up in the second year of the new rebuild (30:45), and it even compares favorably to 2017 figures when you focus on the paid, in-person turnout.
