Or “The Woman Who Was Cool”. The boys sit down with good friend of the show Gus to remind you that Todd Field invented Big League Chew and also that his movie Tár absolutely rules. We dare to ask “is Cate Blanchette good at conducting?”, spot ghosts, trying to enjoy Monster Hunter, playing the triangle right and “what this movie is actually about?” Watching the End of History will return next along with Hollywood Tim as we tackle another deeply weird Stephen Spielberg/Tom Cruise 00s sci-fi movie. This time though, a movie that is almost as obsessed with 9/11 as our show is: 2005's War of the Worlds. Julian Lloyd Webber's musical life is remarkably varied. As a solo cellist, he has performed with many of the world's finest orchestras and conductors, as well as every leading symphony and chamber orchestra in the UK. His discography includes his BRIT Award-winning Elgar Cello Concerto, conducted by Yehudi Menuhin, and ‘Variations', a collaboration between him and his brother Andrew, which has sold over a million copies. Julian has premiered more than fifty works over his career and inspired composers such as Malcolm Arnold, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Eric Whitacre to write new music for the cello. He was also the London Underground's first official busker, and he was also the only classical musician to perform at the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics.Julian is a leading advocate for accessible music education, and has been throughout his whole career. Founded by Julian in 2007, the In Harmony programme has introduced the power of music to more than sixty thousand school children from the least privileged parts of England. He was also Principal of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for five years, a place at which he still holds the position of Emeritus Professor. In this episode, we dig into the topic of music education, along with various issues the industry is facing at the moment. Julian also talks about working with Yehudi Menuhin, and the injury that forced him to retire from his cello career.-------------------Julian's links:WebsiteFacebookTwitter-------------------Follow The Classical Circuit on InstagramDid you enjoy this episode? When cellist Ofra Harnoy entered London's venerable Abbey Road Studios in 1996 to record Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85, she never imagined she would have to wait 27 years for the recording's release – at last, set for release on September 15 via Sony Classical and available for preorder now.The new album also includes a reissue of Harnoy's recording of the Cello Concerto in D Minor by the French composer Edouard Lalo, made in 1995 with the late Antonio de Almeida conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.Track Listing:1 Elgar: Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 / I. Elgar's Cello Concerto was composed in the shadow of World War 1. It was a piece that marked a profound shift in Elgar's outlook on life and music, and was his last major work before a long silence caused by the death of his wife Alice. It is a piece of remarkable passion for a composer like Elgar, and never fails to move the audience with its combination of grief, melancholy, nostalgia, rage, but also tenderness. Elgar as a composer had been passed by with the invention of atonality and with composers like Stravinsky and Schoenberg pushing the boundaries of where music could go. Elgar stubbornly stayed true to his Romantic impulses, but the concerto also displays some of the inescapable influence of those composers. It is one of the most powerful pieces of the 20th century, but one of the reasons we know the piece so well is an unforgettable recording made in 1965 by Jacqueline Du Pre. It is very unusual for a piece to be so associated with a single performer, but Du Pre truly made the Elgar a standard concerto for the cello and it is now a piece that every cellist makes a part of their repertoire. We'll talk about all this and more during the show today - join us!
We celebrate the return of superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma to the Peristyle with a full house of Toledo Symphony personalities, including special guest Amy Chang (who is also a cellist). Hear stories and get to know Yo-Yo Ma through our conversation (and "Quiz"-versation), as he's not only a performing artist, but a driving force in the effort to use music to address global issues. Also, not to be forgotten is Johannes Brahms, whose final symphony pairs nicely with Yo-Yo Ma's rendition of the Elgar Cello Concerto on the program. Find out what these seemingly disparate works have in common with each other!
In "In Conversation" today we hear from Nicolas Altstaedt. He is a musician with head, heart and soul and an extremely likeable interlocutor. As a soloist (cellist), conductor or even, for example, musical director of an international chamber music festival, he works with a wide variety of orchestras and groups around the world to express his love of music. SBS German was fortunate enough to speak with him during his short stay here in Australia. He explained aspects of classical music that many are not aware of, such as the fact that instruments have to be tuned differently for certain works, as well as general points about how soloists, conductors and orchestras work together. And he also has a lot of interesting things to say about the famous Elgar Cello Concerto, which he will perform this week at the Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
I'm delighted to be welcoming on this podcast Guy Johnston. Guy is one of Britain's leading cellists who was the winner of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year back in 2000 which set him on a glittering international career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher. This podcast was recorded after Guy had given two performances of Elgar's Cello Concerto at very short notice with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, having come for a short trip from the States to England. And we managed to cover a number of different topics over the short time we had including: performing last-minute concerts, being a musical parent, growing up in a musical household, training in the States, Guy's new YouTube series Creative Cello Chats, playing on a Stradivarius and interpreting Bach, which Guy has been a real exponent of. Interview recorded 27 January 2023; podcast published 18 February 2023. Edited Joe Eftihiou at Clarion; additional edits Annabelle Lee. This week, we explore one of the pillars of the cello repertoire, the melancholic and profoundly emotional Elgar Cello Concerto. We'll take a look at its unusual and symphonic structure, its balancing of modernism and conservatism, its incredible outpouring of emotion, and the association of the concerto with just one single voice, that of the great cellist Jacqueline Du Pre. We will also discuss the connection of the concerto to World War I, a conflict that Elgar was horrified by, and certainly influenced his concerto.
