About Mark Cousins Mark is a Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker and writer. His themes are the inspiring power of cinema, cities, walking, childhood, archives and recovery. At the start of his career he made TV documentaries on childhood, neo-Nazism and Mikhael Gorbachev. In the mid 90s he and the Edinburgh International Film Festival showed films in Sarajevo to support its besieged citizens. His first book was Imagining Reality: The Faber Book of Documentary (“Indispensible” - Times Literary Supplement). His 2004 book The Story of Film was published around the world. The Times called it “by some distance the best book we have read on cinema.” Its latest edition was published in October 2020. His 930 minute film, The Story of Film: An Odyssey (“The place from which all future film revisionism should begin” - New York Times), played in the major film festivals and cinemas, and has had an influence on film education. Michael Moore gave it the Stanley Kubrick Award, it won the Peabody Award, was BAFTA Scotland nominated, and received other prizes. In 2021 he added a sequel film, The Story of Film: A New Generation. It premiered as the launch film of Cannes, was called “poetry in motion” by the Hollywood Reporter, and “the soul of the festival” by Cannes director Thierry Frémaux. Empire magazine called it “a poetic opus” and it was nominated for Grierson award. Cousins' first feature documentary, The First Movie, about kids in Kurdish Iraq, won the Prix Italia. It was inspired by growing up in the Troubles in Northern Ireland and his passionate interest in the role cinema can play in kids' lives. In 2012 he was nominated for the London Awards for Art and Performance and the Screen International award. He was guest curator at the Eye Cinematheque in Amsterdam. His next feature film, What is this Film called Love?, played in 20 countries, at the ICA in London, and was nominated for Best Director by BAFTA Scotland. PJ Harvey called it “revelatory and inspiring”. The rock band Maximo Park wrote a song inspired by it. In 2013 he completed Here be Dragons, a film about the vital role of film archives, especially one in Albania. It won the main prize in the Romania Film Festival. In the same year he made A Story of Children and Film, which was in the official selection in Cannes. He curated Cinema of Childhood, a series of 17 films which toured the UK and Ireland for a year and was supported by the BFI. He received the Visionary Award in Traverse City and the Saltzgeber Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Then he made Life May Be, co-directed with Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari, and 6 Desires, an adaptation of DH Lawrence's book Sea and Sardinia. Life May Be was noted for its feminism and innovation and was called “transcendent and extraordinarily delicate”. It won the Don Quixote prize. 6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia, in which Jarvis Cocker plays the voice of DH Lawrence, had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and its international premiere at Sundance. Cousins had his first retrospective at the Wroclaw film festival. Others have followed in London, Thessaloniki, Finland and Geneva. Cousins' The Oar and the Winnowing Fan was a takeover of the DazedDigital website. His I am Belfast was his first full feature about Northern Ireland. It was released by the BFI. Variety compared it to the great director Dziga Vertov. His BBC/BFI film Atomic, a collaboration with the band Mogwai, played in Hiroshima, near Chernobyl and Coventry Cathedral and at the Edinburgh International Festival. He curated a season of films for the Romanian Cultural Institute and made a fiction film, Stockholm My Love, (starring Neneh Cherry, released by BFI). He completed Bigger than The Shining, a secret project, showable only in underground circumstances, and wrote The Story of Looking (“Like a wise man looking at the stars”, the Guardian; “Brilliant” the New York Times). It was nominated for the Saltire Award for best non-fiction book. Cousins' The Eyes of Orson Welles world premiered in Cannes and received rave reviews. His 2 hour, four-screen Storm in My Heart is about Hollywood sexism and racism. His 14 hour film Women Make Film premiered at the Venice, Toronto and Telluride film festivals, is narrated by Jane Fonda, Sharmila Tagore, Debra Winger, Adjoa Andoh, Kerry Fox and Tilda Swinton, and is showing in many countries. The Times called it “Exquisite, emotionally resonant and intellectually unassailable. Pure poetry.” It won the European Film Academy's inaugural Innovative Storytelling award, and has led to the restoration of a series of films directed by women. Two more recent films are The Storms of Jeremy Thomas, about the legendary film producer – which premiered in Cannes 2021 and won the best documentary in Spain's Dias De Cine - and The Story of Looking, in which he filters the history of looking through his own eye operation. Time Out called it “A rich cinematic journey into the art of seeing and how it connects us with culture, ourselves and each other.” It won the Best Non-Fiction Film award at the Seville Film Festival. Cousins recently completed My Name is Alfred Hitchcock and The March on Rome, an Italian Palomar production about Mussolini and Fascism, part-shot in Cinecitta in Rome and starring Alba Rohrwacher. The latter premiered at the Venice film festival, was called “entirely arresting” by the Guardian, won the audience award for Best International Documentary in Brazil, and was nominated for a European Film Academy Award. The former premiered at the Telluride film festival. In 2022, his films were the subject of a multi screen film installation, Passé Présent Futur, at the huge Plaza cinema in Geneva, and had a retrospective at the Biograf film festival in Bologna. He premiered his first art installation, Like a Huge Scotland, at teh Fruitmarket gallery, Edinburgh, and – along with Cate Blanchette and Sarah Polley - was given the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema medal at the Telluride Film Festival. Cousins has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling, is Honorary Professor of film at Queen's University, was co-artistic director of Cinema China and did The Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams and A Pilgrimage, with Tilda Swinton. He and Swinton also ran The 8 ½ Foundation, a two year event which created a movie birthday for children. It was nominated for the Human Rights Award. He was chair of the Belfast Film Festival and Docs Ireland. He was recently given Portugal's Aurelio de Paz dos Reis international award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema (2019), and the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in screen education (2020). Mark's roles in filmmaking, education and advocacy have widened and deepened with the years. He was an early adopter of small cameras and new technology to evolve a business model for filmmaking which was sustainable, international and creatively free. He has walked across Los Angeles, Belfast, Moscow, Beijing, London, Paris, Berlin, Dakar and Mexico City. He drove from Edinburgh to Mumbai, and loves night swimming. Brennan & Mama K are catching-up on the most recent Oscar nominees; this episode, it's Tár
Ryan and Dylan give their final predictions for the 2023 Oscars just ahead of the ceremony.
[REBROADCAST FROM October 4, 2022] In the latest film from writer and director Todd Field, Cate Blanchett stars as Lydia Tár, a pioneering and domineering conductor at the top of her game, an EGOT winner and the head of a major Berlin orchestra. But as allegations of misconduct follow her, Lydia struggles to keep a hold of her job, her power, her family, and perhaps even her sanity. Todd Field and Cate Blanchett join us discuss, "Tár."
Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair's chief critic and co-host of its awards podcast Little Gold Men, joins us for our annual Oscars episode to discuss father themes in this year's nominated films. From the chest-beating patriarchs of Avatar 2 to the unhappily married backdrop dads of Everything Everywhere All At Once to the leering father-daughter Lifetime body horror of The Whale, we're cheering and jeering Hollywood's best attempts at capturing "dad stuff." We also get into the sexual predation and abusive careerism of a female protagonist in Tar, the drama of male friendship in The Banshees of Inisherin, the daddy longing of Marilyn, and the lineage-poisoning effects of PTSD in All Quiet on the Western Front. Then it's on to Richard's official winner predictions (crib them if you want to sweep your Oscars pool) and tips for approaching Cate Blanchette at a party without fully disassociating and being sucked into a nearby air vent. We're Petra's father and we urge you to hit play. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

The Cogill's believe “The Menu” is a well-made, well-acted, yet slightly disappointing thriller about a maniacal chef who knows all too much about his patrons.“Tar” could win Cate Blanchette her third Oscar in a great performance about a troubled Symphony conductor about to go through some things.Sommelier Hayley Hamilton Cogill expertly tackles “The Menu” with an expensive, highly renowned, bold Napa Valley red wine from Realm Winery called “The Absurd.”Hayley goes to Germany for the complicated, calculated “Tar” and pairs with an austere, lean, focused, slightly bitter Riesling from Mosel.

This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt catch up with another movie Matt has never heard of with George Miller's (yes, that George Miller) ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing'. Tilda Swinton plays a scholar that specializes in storytelling, of legend and myth. She finds a bottle and releases an honest to goodness Jinn, played by the overly handsome DJ Idris Elba. So what wishes will be granted? And what stories will be told? Then it's time to wrap up the Malick Marathon with both versions of “documentary”, ‘Voyage of Time'. Malick's telling of the birth and end of the universe with two distinct versions, one narrated by Cate Blanchette and the other by Brad Pitt. There's the loving rundown of the big physical media releases for the week and the guys share the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week.

Cindy Drummond spent the first 35 years of her life avoiding becoming an entertainer. After dropping in and out of college, waiting tables, tending bar, managing restaurants and working retail, all on her feet, Cindy found herself with a bad case of plantar fasciitis and an equally bad case of wanderlust. So, she finally packed up her custom orthotics and her hopes and dreams, and moved to Los Angeles, where she quickly got a job…waiting tables. But luckily for Cindy, the difference between waiting tables in Alexandria, Virginia, and waiting tables in Los Angeles, is that in L.A., all the other servers are actors, writers and comics. She had finally found her tribe. Cindy first tried her hand at stand-up comedy. The stand up soon led to acting in commercials. You might recognize her as the GEICO “Spy Mom,” a recurring role since 2015. Cindy's years as a stand-up sharpened the improvisational skills she used to mold the character of “Spy Mom.” She worked alongside the writers and ad execs from The Martin Agency, who happened to be based out of her home state of Virginia. One of Cindy's favorite parts of her career is the act of collaboration. A senior copy writer said of her, “She's a better writer than I am. She kept giving us so much fun material. It would have been a shame to leave that all behind on a hard drive somewhere.” The “Spy Mom” character went on to be voted one of the top 5 GEICO characters of all time in a nationwide contest. And much to the delight of Cindy's parents, “Cindy Drummond” has twice been the answer to Jeopardy questions about the GEICO “Spy Mom.” In addition to many other commercials, Cindy has also made appearances in film and television. She can currently be seen recurring in a guest starring role on the CBS prime time comedy “The Unicorn.” In one of her proudest and most satisfying roles to date, she appeared as Lottie Beth Hobbs alongside Cate Blanchette in the multi-Emmy nominated historical limited series, “Mrs. America,” on FX on Hulu. When Cindy is not working, she gives her time to a small non-profit all-volunteer-run animal rescue in Los Angeles called LA Animal Rescue. She says the animals keep her grateful, grounded and sane. ©2020-2022 Cronecast Podcast Network | Music ©2008 Brooksie Wells

The Aaron Sorkin project about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, their marriage and their iconic 1950s television show “I Love Lucy” has actually been in the works for a while and was originally supposed to star Cate Blanchette. Cate is no longer associated with the project for unknown reasons. However, Nicole Kidman is now in negotiations to play the comedienne and Javier Bardem is slated to play Desi Arnaz. What does it really take to have a celebrity client base? My guest on today's Podcast is Nicola Clarke who is a salon partner and the creative colour director at John Frieda salons in London as well as being a major celebrity colourist. Nicola's success is not only due to her talent as a colourist but her personal qualities of grit, determination and persistence which are lessons that we all need to take on board as we work through the coming weeks. For many hairdressers, the opportunity to work 1-1 with some of the worlds top models, musicians, actors and celebrities is their dream job and definition of success. But obviously, it’s a definition of success that only a few can achieve and even less can maintain. It takes more than just technical and creative skills. You also have to be a certain type of person to be able to deal with celebrity clients, because it can be demanding, unpredictable and stressful to the extreme… But the upside is also pretty cool as well! Nicola has a client list that includes the likes of Kate Moss, Madonna, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchette, Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie, Sienna Miller, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jake Gyllenhall, Brad Pitt, Claudia Schiffer, Tilda Swinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dua Lipa… I am sure you are getting the idea. Quite simply Nicola is the colourist behind some of the worlds most photographed faces as well as being called upon to create characters in the world of film. Nicola runs the gauntlet from film locations and magazine shoots to red carpet but is always back to the salon, which she describes as ‘the best part’ of the job. So if you are expecting some prima donna princess, you will be disappointed because Nicola is one of the most down to earth, loyal and normal people that you will ever meet and I suggest that that is one of her secret weapons! In This Episode: [02:36] Nicola, welcome to the show! [03:21] Nicola shares how she got into the business when she was thirteen. [04:35] When did you start working full time in a salon situation? [07:52] Nicola speaks about being interested in session hairdressing and wanting to be a part of that world. [10:12] She chats about working at a place called Hyper Salon. [12:35] Nicola shares that she took her holiday’s during fashion week with the hope that she could assist Sam McKnight. [14:35] Were you working in the salon as a colorist or an all-around hairdresser? [17:09] Nicola speaks about the transition from working at a salon to becoming a session stylist and colorist for celebrities. [19:31] She chats about an article in Vogue about her being Sam’s assistant. [20:27] Nicola shares being asked to fix Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair on set. [22:50] Antony believes that part of Nicola’s success is because she is not intimidated by anyone. [25:35] Nicola sees celebrities as regular clients, not as someone famous. [26:52] Have you had any push back from stars wanting something done that you weren’t comfortable doing? [29:06] Nicola says she loves doing red carpet work the most. [31:48] She shares a story about getting on a helicopter with Madonna. [33:55] Nicola speaks about working in John Frieda’s salon in London, where she has a salon named the Nicola Clarke Salon. There’s a Roger Ailes biopic with a tremendous cast of actresses like Charlize Theron & Margot Robbie squaring off against John Lithgow as Ailes. Then we’re getting a Lucille Ball movie with Cate Blanchette and written by Aaron Sorkin at some point over the next two years. We profile those movies before we dive into a big 7 categories. Last year, we predicted the 4 acting and director categories. So we added Picture and Animated Feature to that list this year. We give you our top 3 likely nominees and mention some of the other contenders to refresh you on what that field will look like. Then after we go over our picks from last year at this time before deciding upon our final picks this year. Jez Smith is a photographer. He as created arresting images of world-famous talent such as: Christy Turlington, Cate Blanchette, Serena Williams, Miranda Kerr, Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins. And he has shot for publications like: Vogue Italia, Hapers Bizarr UK, Instyle, Elle, GQ and The Australian's Wish Magazine (my personal favourite). When it comes to shooting high-end fashion photography in Australia, Jez Smith has a reputation for being one of the best in his field. Why then, after almost 20 years building that reputation did he decide to move afield and relocate back to London for fresh start? This episode explores a theme that has come up a lot with my guests of late, and that is self-preservation & self care - which is not only necessary for those looking to forge a career doing what they love. It’s as important – if not more important – for those who are already working within the field of their passions - because your livelihood depends on your ability to create. This episode is all about stepping back and taking stock - which is not a ‘one time only’ occurrence. Over the course of your creative career, you may need to do this on multiple occasions. It was interesting for me to be reminded that no matter how successful you are are you still need to be responsible for your well-being. I’m really appreciative of Jez’s openness in talking about issues that were very personal to him – this is a great conversation for anyone who is wrestling with not only the question of HOW to do what they love for a living - But WHY.
Gustavo & Martina took a quick break from what seemed an intense week for fashion and the culinary world. The passing of both icons brings them together to discuss a mental illness that seems to be claiming lives more than automobile accidents. On a lighter note, the podcasters discuss the CFDA Awards and the red carpet. Just hit the play button for the full interviewListen and subscribe via iTunes As always, below are the visuals that go along with our podcast.Loved Hamish Bowles look! The fit on this suit was top notch! The lines created a stripe that made him look much thinner! These stripes created an optical illusion that drew my eye in that made me move from section to section with my eyes. They kept my attention while looking at it. Kourtney Khardashian in Christian Siriano. Loved this look as it kept in line with our current state of empowering women to be forces of nature. This look is slick and flattering but still feminine and delicate. The detailing of the stones on this pantsuit makes the statement considering it is a very simple look that she had on. Thought the accessorizing was done tastefully as well as hair and make-up.Emiily Rataikowski in Brock Collection. I personally enjoyed the structure of this garment. I felt like it collaborated the structure of a masculine garment but yet was feminine with the silhouette of a dress and the floral applique. I also think that Midi length gowns are extremely difficult to execute and she has a tall slender frame that this completely works for her. The fact that the top half and bottom half are two different looks makes them look like a separates which is also great because it is a look that can be dressed up or dressed down. Martha Hunt in Thome Browne. Loved this look in particular because it marries the structured tailored looks that Thom Browne is known for but yet looks delicate and feminine. To me this is also very artistic and that is what fashion is about; art that we wear. The boning in the gown creates the structure and visual interest. The train she is holding in her hand that is attached to the dress also adds to the drama in the gown and gives the eye another thing to look at. I will say it is very visually appealing because there is a natural progression that the eye goes through meaning that it starts at the top and works its’ way down and you stop to look at every detail.Linda Fargo in Oscar de la Renta. Linda Fargo is probably my favorite look of all the looks I personally saw at the CFDA awards. The womenswear director of BG wore a traditional polka dot that most people think is a juvenile print but was worn in an elegant way. This print is one that I believe most people tend to shy away from because it makes you stand out in a crowd. But Fargo does this in a way that is tastefully done. It’s a fairly simple silhouette with the fabric being the star of this show. Bravo to her in not taking fashion so seriously. Tracee Ellis Ross in Carolina Herrera. Gustavo loves this dress for the pure fact that is ultra feminine. From the cascading silk layes of different shades of pink to the bold black strap. It stood our more than others. Naomi Campbell in Calvin Klien. What is there to say about the most Iconic model infringe? Absolutely nothing. There is nothing Naomi cannot wear and not make it work. I love the bold red and the fact that is modern but it reminds me of a 20's flapper dress. Amazing.Cate Blanchette in Monse was the cool chic at the party. The one that goes against the dress code but knows she looks cool. I love this black ensemble with the pop of glittered silver. Upon more research, I discovered that an apron type skirt is layered over the silver skirt as given it an illusion of a topsy-turvy layer. I think this worked great for an event that salutes designer creativity. As Always. LIKE. COMMENT. SUBSCRIBE.Follow our social media:IG: @fashionjunkiespodcast2Twitter: @fashionjunkies2

And in some barber shops that will cut women’s hair, there’s usually a side of sexism. Basically, this is BS. (if you have a hair person you love, share the deets in the comments!) The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Spine Number: 300 Director: Wes Anderson Genre: Comedy No matter how much you love a filmmaker there will almost always be one or two films on his or her resume that just don't connect with you. Everything else might be good, fantastic, or brilliant... but it's almost impossible for someone have a 100% success rate. Well... for Wes Anderson, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou falls into that category. On paper, this film has everything. It's Wes following up Tenenbaums with Bill Murray in a bigger part, you have Owen Wilson, WIllem Dafoe, Cate Blanchette, Angelica Houston, and music from David Bowie and Mark Mothersbaugh. Honestly, what could go wrong? It's clear from the beginning that this film is a labor of love. Wes Anderson is a big fan of Jacques Cousteau, his work is a plot point in Rushmore, and this is his attempt to pay tribute to one of his influences. But there is just something missing. It's not a bad movie, but from someone who can produce such fantastic work as Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, an OK movie just doesn't feel OK. So, check it out and see what you think. Did we miss something, or did this movie just miss us? Next Week: Spine number 322: Mr. Arkadin, AKA Confidential Report. Also, check this out. The Life Masters is now it's own show with its own site and own dedicated feed. That's right, we have two completely different shows! Right now check it out at www.thelifemasters.podbean.com. You can also drink in our brilliance on Youtube for both The Film Thugs and The Life Masters. http://fantasymovieleague.com/ Looks like Summer Movie League has officially become Fantasy Movie League. It looks quite fun. Here's how it works. You have an 8 screen theater. Every week you pick movies and have a budget/salary cap you have to stay under. Then you compete against other theaters in your league. It's fantasy football for movie people. Our league is Film Thugs 2015 and the password is Porterhouse. And remember, you can be a part of the show any time you wild like. How's that? All you have to do is call or e-mail us. If you live in the US, or any place that makes calling the US easy, just dial 512-666-RANT and leave us a voicemail. We will read the Google Voice transcript and play your message. It's both funny AND informative. If you live outside the US you can call us on Skype at The_Film_Thugs. You can leave a message, or someone might actually answer. E-mail us at thefilmthugs@gmail.com and we will read/play whatever you send us, or you can e-mail thugquestions@gmail.com to be part of an upcoming "Ask the Film Thugs" show, where we answer questions on any subject without having heard them first. Also, we are on twitter @thefilmthugs and on Facebook and Vine. Also, be sure to check back often for our new endeavor The Life Masters, where we answer questions to other advice columnists.
