In this episode we introduce you to a part of our bodies that was invisible to Western scientists until about five years ago; it's called "the interstitium," a vast network of fluid channels inside the tissues around our organs that scientists have just begun to see, name, and understand. Along the way we look at how new technologies rub up against long-standing beliefs, and how millions of scientists and doctors failed to see what was right in front (and inside!) of their noses. We also find out how mapping the anatomy of this hidden infrastructure may help solve one of the fundamental mysteries of cancer, and perhaps provide a bridge between ancient and modern medicine.Special thanks to Aaron Wickenden, Jessica Clark, Mara (pronounced Mah-Dah) Zepeda, Darryl Holliday, Dr. Amy Chang, Kate Sassoon, Guy Huntley, John Jacobson, Scotty G, and the Village Zendo EPISODE CREDITS - Reported by - Lulu Miller and Jenn BrandelProduced by - Matt Kieltywith help from - Ekedi Fausther-Keeyswith mixing help from - Arianne WackFact-checking by - Natalie Middletonand Edited by - Alex Neason EPISODE CITATIONS - Articles: Check out reporter Jenn Brandel's companion essay to this episode in Orion magazine, titled, Invisible Landscapes (https://zpr.io/NKuxvYY84RvH), which argues that the discovery of the interstitium could challenge established practices of compartmentalizing in science and society. Our newsletter comes out every Wednesday. Amy Chang—or Bond en Avant, as you may know her—has made a name for herself as a massive beauty content creator. She shares reviews of various products and services with over two million followers on TikTok and Instagram. Her audience comes for the beauty and stays for the personal connection, like her recently shared adoption story, which has since garnered over 11 million views. But back before she was serving up highly engaging content, she actually began her career at a PR agency in NY and subsequently took on clients of her own as a freelance publicist in L.A. It's been quite the journey to land where she is today, and Chang is enthusiastically candid about just what got her there.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I am thrilled to share a little about me so you can get a sense of the passion and dedication that is present at Healthy Living Coaching. From Amy...I started my professional life in 1995 as a Registered Nurse with an Associate's degree in Nursing. I loved my time at the bedside taking care of, educating, providing dignity, and comforting patients and their families. In 1999, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my bachelor's degree from University of Rochester (NY), and in 2002 finished my Master of Science in Nursing degree, becoming a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. Later that year I was honored to pass my board exam and be a national board certified Adult, Acute Care, Critical Care Advanced Practice Nurse.Meanwhile, in my personal life, I became a mom in March of 2001 (Maggie), October of 2002 (Max), and again in November of 2004 (Molly)! It was a busy time and I chose to leave my nursing career for the moment and take on being a full-time Mom. In addition to being with the children, I found two passions: CrossFit, when I became an athlete, trainer, and eventually gym owner, and Hickory Day School, where I was president of the board and volunteer. As the children grew and my life shifted, I looked to reignite my professional life. I never let go of the nurse in me and now I had a new love for training people at CrossFit as well. I knew I loved both roles for the same reason — I got to educate and inspire people to take control of their health, have more confidence and self-efficacy, and thrive in their lives! I just wasn't sure the best way for me to make this a career…Then BOOM! The perfect email at the perfect time perfectly intersected my passions. I opened an email from Duke Integrative Medicine offering the Health and Wellness Coaching program and I was lit!! Health coaching was my next big chapter. I attended the Foundation and Certification program offered at Duke over the next year (2019-2020) and Healthy Living Coaching was born!Since then I have worked with people to create inspired health for lit up living! It has been a calling for me and a privilege to walk alongside people as they take responsibility and power in areas of their health that have been lagging behind. Together, we go from defeated, anxious and out of control of their health to in control, “lighter” (in both ways!) and finding everyday joy. Should CEOs be fearless? Amy Chang thinks not. In fact, Amy credits fear as one of the biggest motivators throughout her impressive career so far. In this episode, Amy reveals the mindset behind her biggest career decisions to date, what inspires her to lean into the unknown, and the techniques she uses to master her entrepreneurial fears. Amy shares her thoughts on... Embracing the Unknown: “I think if you're not scared at all, either you're fooling yourself or there might be something pathologically wrong with you, because if you're going from complete security to complete insecurity, all humans will experience moments of fear of the unknown. I think that's very natural and normal. And how you push through that fear and how you make it useful to you. That's the part that I think we all are training on and trying to be better at.” Leaning into Fear: “I actually think that fear can be a very healthy thing. It can help speed up urgency. It can help make certain that you're prioritizing things properly and prioritizing resources properly. Because figuring out what to say ‘no’ to is as important as whatever you say ‘yes’ to.” The Myth of Fearless Leaders: “I think it is such a common misconception that if you feel fear that perhaps you're not qualified to be CEO, that perhaps you shouldn't be an entrepreneur because entrepreneurs are fearless. And I just don't think that's true.”

Mike Roberts is the founder of San Diego Code School, which focuses on helping individuals prepare for careers as software developers through apprenticeships. Mike began coding when he was 12 or 13, purely as a hobby at first. After his attempt at going to college to be an accountant was unsuccessful, Mike chose to get a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in engineering, ultimately becoming a software engineer. Then, he did everything he could to get involved in San Diego’s tech scene in order to help make the market available for amateur coders. When Mike initially created San Diego Code School, it was a fast moving bootcamp that was meant to help prepare people for careers as software engineers in the local tech scene. He chose to pivot his company model about 6 months ago, when he realized that the college-to-company pipeline was failing both companies and their employees: new hires fresh off college graduation lacked the experience of hands-on coding projects that actually added business value to companies. His San Diego Code School is working to fix that. Mike’s apprenticeship approach is incredibly unique; as a program that pays you to learn, it allows interested individuals to work in the field under managerial supervision until they gain enough skills to be fully independent. Additionally, the locations of Mike’s School are intentionally in underrepresented communities in order to lift them up and upskill them for 21st century jobs. Brook Sheehan and Rema Abedkader are the co-founders behind Cup O’ Sugar, a mobile app that allows neighbors to connect over sharing and requesting food ingredients. Single moms and close friends for nine years, Brook and Rema originally got their app idea when they were missing a vital ingredient for a recipe. Rema texted a neighbor of hers and managed to get the ingredient, leading them to question whether they could take an old-school philosophy of neighbor support and convert it to mobile technology. They began their work in 2017 and the app finally launched in 2018. Both Brook and Rema discussed how their personal goals feed directly into the app: Brook, who is super against food waste, and Rema, who thrives on community connections, agree that this app is a perfect combination of their personalities. Right now, due to COVID-19, their app is more popular than ever as users hope to find ingredients that their local grocery stores have run out of. Steve Beck is a managing partner at Serra Ventures, an early-stage venture fund focused on IT and agtech. The Illinois-founded fund has about 85 portfolio companies. Steve grew up in the Bay Area, where he lived an adventurous childhood. After high school, he moved out to San Luis Obispo to pursue his bachelor’s degree at Cal Poly SLO. During his 13-year stint there, Steve became serious about entrepreneurship. At 23 years old, he was managing a surf shop and convinced his employer to help him start a mail order skateboard company, which was named California Cheap Skates. CCS went on to become the world’s largest action sports retailer and was later acquired. After leaving his first company, Steve went on to start a church with young surfers, he then started a skateboard church, and a couple more after that. Something he learned about himself through this experience is that he would get bored with projects after a few years and was always looking for the next thing. Someone from the last church Steve built approached him about starting a tech company, which went on to become Steve’s first big exit. After his big exit, Steve began dabbling in investing. He banded with a few others to form a small venture fund with $25 million of their own money, which is when he started to learn more about venture capital. Listen in to hear about Steve’s journey from entrepreneurship to church founder, investor, and avid mountain biker. Al Bsharah and Amy Chang join in for a fun group chat. Terri talks to Amy Chang about how at the age of 35 she had checked all life’s boxes but wasn’t completely fulfilled. She found religion to fill the void and was able to redefine success for herself. Amy talks about how this changed the way she operates in the world and how she wants to see more women angel investing. Who is Amy Chang? Amy C. Chang is the CEO of Delta Nutrassentials, a consumer health supplement company. Previously, she was VP of Strategy & Investor Relations for AMN Healthcare and prior to joining AMN, she held various leadership roles with other companies in operations, customer service and finance after beginning her career with KPMG. Amy is an advisor, board member, and investor of various start-ups in San Diego, as well as a board member of Hera Angels and member of the Keiretsu Forum, Wharton Angel Network, and SheEO. She served as a board member of the National Investor Relations Institute - San Diego Chapter and has been a member of the San Diego YMCA Overnight Camps Board of Advisors. She is Chair-Elect of the San Diego YMCA Board of Governors and has been involved in homeless ministries and has served as a foster youth mentor and foster parent. Show Highlights Amy talks about being the driver’s seat of your life (similar to Terri talking about being the pilot in your own life) and not just letting life happen. Amy talks about being driven and the importance of checking the boxes to achieve ‘success’ in her life and still being unfulfilled. She realized that she might have had the wrong measure of success in her life. Despite checking all of the boxes, she realized she wasn’t happy enough. She became a born-again Christian at the age of 35 which has made the biggest difference in her life and has changed the way she looks at her life and the rewards she wants to get out of life. Her definition of success has changed, and she worries about far fewer things as a result. She thinks that people are happier when they are living something beyond themselves. Amy talks about what she looks for as an angel investor and some of the startups she’s invested in. Three years ago, Amy didn’t know that angel investing was an option but has since invested in quite a few companies directly. She joined the Keiretsu Forum, the Wharton Angel Network and she is now on the board of Hera Ventures. Amy likes to invest directly into a startup to help them fuel their growth which helps to create innovation and helps the local economy. She does caution that angel investing is not for everyone. Amy talks about the importance of diversifying your portfolio and how networking has contributed to her deal flow. She has learned the most from other angel investors. Terri talks about her experience in Sand Hill Angels being a great training ground. Amy and Terri would like to see more female angel investors, and both shared the importance of being supported by other female angel investors. Based on what she wishes she knew when she started investing, Amy recommends that women start with small checks and get to know the founders as much as you can. If Amy could wave a magic wand, she would encourage people to get to know each other on an individual basis. Terri’s Key Takeaway Founder integrity is critical when investing in a startup. But it's tough to know exactly what to say, especially if you don't speak their language. Wouldn't it be nice if there was someone with experience in both PR and beauty who could write a script, complete with PR terminology that would get their attention in a good way and help you build a lasting professional relationship? Amy Chang is the founder and editor of BOND EN AVANT, a luxury beauty and lifestyle blog founded in 2016. Her brand seeks to provide thoughtful reviews and inspiring stories, while showcasing brands that uplift women. BOND EN AVANT boasts 7,000 unique visitors and 10,000 page visits per month. At 19, Amy took a year off from college and worked as a makeup artist for Shiseido. When she returned to school in New York, Amy knew she wanted to pursue her passion for beauty, and studying PR allowed her to do internships with Loreal and few hospitality firms. After graduation, Amy worked in the consumer products division of an agency where she was responsible for dealing with the bloggers! But after a move to LA, she made the decision to become a content creator herself, tapping into her creativity to establish a blog where she has the freedom to write about products she believes in. Listen in as she gets granular about the process of building relationships with PR reps for brands and requesting specific product. She also offers great advice about negotiating your price for sponsored content and adjusting content to increase engagement on different social media platforms. Check out the show notes.
