DescriptionThe Bach Six Solo Cello Suites are considered a staple for every budding cellist. But in Bach's day, the cello was not considered a solo instrument and these works were shelved for decades. Not until Pablo Casals came along. Take a minute to get the scoop!Bach Cello Suite No. 2 in D min. BWV 1008 Casals c/o YouTubeFun FactSince the earliest manuscripts copied by his wife Anna Magdalena Bach contain no markings as to the bowings, tempo, character, or articulation of the pieces, the suites have been reinterpreted in myriad ways by cellists around the world. One has to admire how the music speaks no matter how varied the approach. Nonetheless, certain cellists stand out for their Bach's music.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Peled says, “Solus et una (meaning ‘alone and together' in Latin) is a reflection on my musical journey during the COVID-19 pandemic. As my mentor, Boris Pergamenschikow wrote, ‘The Bach Cello Suites is music that cleanses the soul, especially if you play it just for yourself, preferably without any audience.' As with many of us cellists, I found myself spending a lot of time with the Bach Suites in my home studio during the long months of the lockdown. The two suites that attracted me the most were the fourth suite in E-flat Major, which represents triumph, daring, and heroism – all the qualities I found myself searching for while trying to make sense of the artistic dryness that we all experienced at the beginning of the pandemic. And in contrast, the monumental fifth suite in C minor, which bubbled up in me about a year into the lockdown when questions about supernatural power, God, love, religion, and a search for belonging to something bigger than just us here on earth emerged in me – all the elements one finds in that almost religious most philosophical suite.”He continues, “As an encore track, I have included on this release the one piece that I was able to record during the lockdown with my dear cello students. Teaching during the pandemic, both online and in-person, has been a source of hope, comfort, and inspiration. Moreover, being able to make music with other people and with my own students was a real musical climax. For me, there's nothing better to conclude this musical journey than the music of Brahms with its beauty of line and intimacy. The making of this recording gave all of us a sense of hope to keep going forward no matter what. I hope you enjoy it.”Solus et una TracklistJ.S. The internationally renowned cellist Steven Isserlis talks to Andrew Marr about his companion guide to The Bach Cello Suites. Isserlis explores why Bach's Six Suites have become some of the most cherished music, and how Bach takes the audience on a spiritual journey, from joy, through tragedy, to jubilation. Schubert's heart-breaking song-cycle Winterreise tells of a young man's desperate wanderings: the music and the poems creating images of fire and snow, of scalding and frozen tears. The baritone Benjamin Appl, accompanied by James Baillieu, stars in a new BBC film, Winter Journey, filmed in a tower on the snow-covered summit of the Julierpass in south-east Switzerland. An album of the music will be released in February. The composer and pianist Kate Whitley is also interested in the importance of place in music. But she has taken a different tack, eschewing the often rarefied atmosphere of concert halls, for the concrete heart of city centres. She runs The Multi-Storey Orchestra which performs in car parks around the UK. Producer: Katy Hickman Photo copyright: Satoshi Aoyagi

#ambisonics #spatialaudio #immersiveaudio #binaural #futureofaudio Music-making has gone through several technological revolutions: from mono to stereo over surround to 3D sound. All these revolutions started from technological progress. The artists and composers embraced the technology later on, allowing them to innovate their art form. Beethoven changed his composing style when he got a new English piano, film music changed radically when the soundtrack was introduced (instead of the live piano music accompaniment). Today a similar revolution is taking place: the technology for immersive music in 3D applications and VR is available. Artists and composers are yet to follow. A gigantic creative space is waiting to be explored by innovative and experimental bands, films and games. Steven Maes has been experimenting with sound tools for the past twenty-five years, using everything from lamp microphones to 360 video and Ambisonic immersive sound technology. Passionate about classical music, he has directed television programs, made hundreds of recordings and mastered CDs for popular music artists from Adamo to Lost Frequencies. His recordings have been praised in BBC Music Magazine Diapason and Gramophone. His DVD 392 (on Pieter Wispelwey's recording of the Bach Cello Suites) was met with great acclaim. Classica selected his recording of Debussy's La Mer (Brussels Philharmonic) as the best classical reference of all time. Recently he made recordings with London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra, in 2016 & 17 Steven made two recordings that won the prestigious Echo Classic in Germany. It seems that every minute of every day, a musician is playing Bach's music somewhere on our planet. Clemency Burton-Hill charts the playing of Bach across a day and around the globe with stories from musicians who each have a daily ritual of playing some of this music. Ilay Kenes is an 11-year-old Belgian boy who plays some Bach on his guitar every morning when he gets out of bed. Other musicians around the world who play Bach every morning include Masaaki Suzuki on the harpsichord or organ in Tokyo, Hungarian-born organist Xaver Varnus in his own church in Nova Scotia, pianist Grant McLachlan looking out at Table Mountain from his house in Cape Town and cellist Nicola Yamazaki in Austria. Some musicians play Bach every day but not at a set time. Iranian-born pianist Ramin Bahrami plays Bach whenever he needs him throughout the day. In one of Kenya's largest slums, David Joroge shares the cello he plays with other students at the Art of Music Foundation and so he plays Bach Cello Suites every day, at a time when there's a cello free. Finally, British viola player, Robin Ireland plays last thing at night before bed in his house in Brittany. Where did this daily ritual of playing Bach every day begin? Maybe with Beethoven or perhaps Mendelssohn. But it was the Catalan cellist Pablo Casals who wrote, "For the past 80 years I have started each day in the same manner. It is not a mechanical routine but something essential to my daily life. I go to the piano, and I play two preludes and fugues of Bach. I cannot think of doing otherwise. It is a sort of benediction on the house. Each day is something new, fantastic, unbelievable. That is Bach, like nature, a miracle!" Clemency herself either listened to or played Bach every day for as long as she can remember. But in January 2020 she experienced a brain haemorrhage, and everything changed. After emergency surgery, she was unconscious for 17 days and then slowly emerged. She's still working her way back to her own daily encounter with Bach's music. J.S. Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Bach's Cello Suites are now an indispensable part of the cello repertoire, but this wasn't always the case. After Bach's death, they were forgotten. But starting in the 1890s, a cellist named Pablo Casals began playing the Suites, and the rest is history. Bach left very few clues on how to play these suites, and so many cellists interpret the Suites extraordinarily differently. Today we're going to take a look at 6 cellists and talk about how they interpret these enigmatic, sacred, and inspiring pieces.

In this conversation, Alan Alda explores this idea with his friend Yo-Yo Ma. Alan has just heard Yo-Yo play all six of the Bach Cello Suites in a concert. An amazingly moving performance – and just one of the performances of the cello suites that he'll be doing in 36 different locations around the world. The caravan travels around the world and brings together speakers that discuss consciousness, technology, well being, a variety of other topics related to where we are and where we’re going. I felt embraced and welcomed by my fellow speakers, as well as by the audience and the organizers. It was a great vibe, full of obviously brilliant and committed individuals. There was a real sense that people were doing their part to create a better world, really walking the walk. It had a very avant garde feel to it. I tend to spend most of my time in more traditional circles, classical yoga and meditation communities. Many of these folks weren’t constrained by a single tradition. Full of raw talent, they appeared to have taken dives into scholarship and practice, and emerged to make it their own. It was refreshing. It was like listening to Kronos Quartet, which if you’re not familiar is famously creative and innovate string quartet that is always surprising and always brilliant. I’m listening to them as I’m writing this, getting myself pumped up for their concert with Zakir Hussian laster this month. If you’re in SF, you should come. Just as I love Kronos, and the experimental, I also love the classical. Bach Cello Suites. Which is why i was also thrilled to meet Anandamali there.
