In the summer of 1917, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths convinced a whole lot of people, including the famous Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, they'd seen fairies neat their home -- and they had photographic evidence to prove it. After decades of keeping their ruse a secret, they admitted their "joke was to last two hours, and it has lasted 70 years.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, we're putting the Sinister Sisters spin on “fairy tale cottagecore!”First, Felicia peels back the page on the real life history behind the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales "Hansel and Gretel.” It may be a story we all know, not to mention one that provided plenty of nightmare fuel for the fire at bedtime as children, but the fact behind the fiction is far more horrifying than just witches eating children. The Great Famine of 1315-1317 that plagued Europe early in the 14th century led people to go to extreme lengths to stay alive…and if you know the fairy tale, well then you can imagine where it goes from here. Let's just say things get dark on the episode…leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find your way back. Next, Lauren explores the case of “The Cottingley Fairies” - a series of several photographs taken by young girls Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths in England in the early 1900s that supposedly showed real life fairies. Eventually the photos caught the attention of theosophist Edward Gardner and even Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The photos are still discussed and debated to this day - how did these girls with primitive photography equipment manage to fake such convincing? Or did they actually provide photographic proof of the existence of these mythical creatures from folklore?!PS: If you have requests for future episodes or just want to hang out, follow us on Instagram @sinistersisterspodcast

In this episode we explore the intersection of identity and opera with University of Florida musicologist Leo Walker. Opera, with its grandeur, emotion, and powerful storytelling, has been a stage for human experiences throughout history. Amidst the vast repertoire of operatic works, there are narratives that explore the diverse spectrum of queer identities. These stories, often overlooked or overshadowed, have found their place within the canon, enriching the operatic landscape. Unveiling the queer threads in the operatic fabric allows us to appreciate the richness and diversity of human experiences. Composers like Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein, and many others, have contributed to this exploration, often drawing inspiration from their own lives and relationships. By examining their music, letters, and historical context, scholars like Leo Walker have shed light on the queerness within the works of these composers, deepening our understanding and appreciation of their contributions to the art form. These narratives illuminate the beauty and struggles of love, desire, and self-discovery. They transcend boundaries and foster belonging for audiences of all backgrounds and identities. Episode Credits: Host - Ashley Daniel FootGuest - Leo WalkerEditor - Mack McGillivray Music Credits: “Adziu! Adziu!” from Act I of Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice. 1968 saw a worldwide escalation of protest, invention and upheaval among a generation of students, musicians included. This episode takes the temperature of this time at the Academy, and investigates the tensions and reconciliations between tradition and the new. Anna Picard talks to some of the figures from that period, explores the longer history of ‘new music' at the Academy (including a surprising choice of rehearsal venue by John Barbirolli), discusses Stravinsky with conductor Edward Gardner, takes a walk in the park with some musical trees, and finds out whether that revolutionary spirit of artistic experimentation and invention is still alive at the Academy today. In a pair of old photos outside the Academy's Library of the class of 1918, there are two black students – composer and multi-instrumentalist Edmund T Jenkins and mezzo-soprano Evelyn Dove. In this episode, Anna Picard explores who they were, how they both forged successful careers and what their stories tell us about ‘high' and ‘low' art at that moment in history. We bring Edmund and Evelyn's worlds to life with rare recordings of their music, and we hear from Edmund's great-nephew, who is keeping his music alive for a new generation. The Canadian violinist James Ehnes has his own string quartet for which he's joined by fellow violinist Amy Schwarz Moretti, viola-player Richard Yongjae O'Neill and cellist Edward Arron, and they've released the final instalment in their series of recordings for Onyx of the Op 74 and 95 quartets and all the late quartets. Their final volume includes the A minor, Op 132 and the F major, Op 135. James Jolly caught up with James Ehnes by video call in Bergen, where he was recording the Nielsen Violin Concerto with Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic, to talk about how he formed the quartet, and their journey through the quartets of Beethoven.
On the morning of Monday, 3rd September, 1894 - 34 passengers made their way onto a sail-powered boat that would, on a normal day, have taken them on a leisurely trip over to Grange-over-Sands, located on the north side of Morecambe Bay, Cumbria. But what should have been a day of fun and enjoyment, it would quickly escalate into a day of tragedy. Departing from Morecambe promenade and the Princess Sailing Company Landing Stage at around 10 o'clock in the morning, the passenger list comprised of a large contingent of holiday makers who had travelled over from Burnley. The 'Matchless' was a small fishing vessel, commonly known as a 'Lancashire nobby' and was used for fishing during the winter months and for pleasure trips in summer. Seventeen years old, the Matchless was roughly 33 feet (10m) long and weighed around five tons. It also contained a mainsail, foresail, topsail and jib. Operated by its owner, 54 year old Samuel Houghton, who was an experience skipper with many years of sailing, after departing from the landing stage, the vessel wouldn't take long to reach a stretch of water just off Silverdale and approximately six miles from where they had departed. The passengers, who, by now were in a merry mood and singing "Dare to be a Daniel!", were oblivious to the impending danger that was fast approaching. Moments later, the Matchless seemed to slow down and to the right, the water had darkened slightly. One of the passengers said to Houghton, "I think we have stopped altogether," and then there was a lull, with the waters becoming still but very dark looking. Out of nowhere, a huge gust slammed into the right side of the vessel, filling the sails and pitching it from left-to-right. And in no time at all, another gust struck from above, followed by a sudden squall, this time throwing the passengers into the water, leaving them no time to grab onto anything. The Matchless began to rock from side-to-side before finally succumbing to the wind as she keeled over, and as the frantic passengers tried desperately to keep themselves afloat, it would only take a few minutes for the Matchless to disappear beneath the water. Just over one-hundred yards away was Edward Gardner, a fisherman of Morecambe, who was also sailing his boat with seventeen passengers, taking the same route as that of Samuel on the Matchless. Having just crossed over a junction in the channel and making headway towards Grange-over-Sands, Edward himself felt the gust of wind as it hit his boat. Looking over towards the direction of where the wind had originated from, he admitted to thinking to himself at a later inquest that the next breeze would be an ordinary breeze and did not think about altering the course of his boat. He would later go on to mention that the wind was more akin to that of being like a whirlwind, first crashing along one side before rounding his boat and hitting it head-on the opposite side. However, whilst he had managed to control his boat, he would see the Matchless pitching over and disappearing into the sea. Instinctively, he turned his boat around to make haste towards the panic-stricken passengers in the water. In total he helped to recover six passengers who were alive and one, unfortunately who had died. For more on this interesting story, please visit our website - www.daysofhorror.com

Major oil producers decided to keep raising output levels in January, despite the Omicron coronavirus variant raising fresh questions over demand. The OPEC+ alliance led by Saudi Arabia and Russia had so far resisted US-led pressure to significantly boost output to rein in surging energy prices. The 13 members of the Vienna-based Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and their 10 allies decided to stick with a modest increase in output of 400,000 barrels per day every month, as they have been doing since May. Commodities economist Edward Gardner from Capital Economics says they suspect that the US-led coordinated release of oil reserves was one reason why OPEC+ decided to push ahead with their plan to raise oil output noting that the group might not want to provoke further action from the large oil consumers.

This podcast features an interview with tenor James Gilchrist, in which we discuss a variety of topics relating to being a singer: - psychology of performance, particularly, in somewhere like the Wigmore Hall where he was singing that evening. - the way audiences might perceive song recitals, and what performers can do to engage them regarding such perceptions. - the balance between what artists do on stage to communicate with their audience, e.g., how much is moving around or maintaining eye contact? - interpretation of narrative in lieder repertoire. - the challenges and privileges of being a medical doctor (which James initially started as), and making the transition to becoming a full-time professional performer. - comparing the experience of music college versus university. Many thanks to James for coming especially to London in the morning to record, as well as Tamsin Raitt and the staff at Wigmore Hall for arrangements for the interview! Podcast published on 13th February 2020; recorded on 8th February 2020 in the Gerald Moore Room, Wigmore Hall, London. James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His musical interest was fired at a young age, singing first as a chorister in the choir of New College, Oxford, and later as a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. James’ extensive concert repertoire has seen him perform in major concert halls throughout the world. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the St John and Matthew Passions feature prominently in his schedule, and he is celebrated as perhaps the finest Evangelist of his generation. Recent engagements include Elijah in Goteborgs Symfoniker and Masaaki Suzuki, Handel’s Messiah with the Handel & Haydn Society in Boston, with Bernard Labadie, and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In the 2019-20 season appearances include the role of Rev. Horace Adams Peter Grimes with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner in London and Norway, St Matthew Passion with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Egarr, and a tour of Europe with Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki. Dikt: "Grunden för all metafysik" Översättning: Karin Boye Uppläsning: Peter Andersson Diktsamling: "USA-poesi" Antologi, red. Jan-Verner Carlsson MUSIK Edward Elgar: Sista satsen ur Stråkserenad e-moll EXEKUTÖR BBC:s symfoniorkester, Edward Gardner, dirigent An American bard at last! I övrigt väckte boken ingen större entusiasm. Gunnar Harding

ENO Talks: Edward Gardner and Edward Seckerson on Eugene Onegin by English National Opera
Edward Gardner is the Music Director of English National Opera and about to become Principal Guest conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He talks to Norman Lebrecht about his career to date. Gardner was appointed to the post at ENO in 2007 while in his early 30s and began by conducting a new production of Britten's Death in Venice. He was born in Gloucester and began his musical life as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral. He later went to Eton where he enjoyed the music making and education and then went to Cambridge where he says he enjoyed the conducting and performing that he did there rather than the more academic side of the course. The Royal Academy of Music followed but before leaving he was already working in the summer at the Salzburg Festival as a repetiteur encountering some of the leading conductors and operatic productions of the time. This experience has influenced some of his choices at ENO. He then worked with Mark Elder at the Halle Orchestra. So choral music and opera were both at the heart of his musical training. In 2004, before he was thirty, he was invited to be Music Director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera, an experience, he says which gave him the opportunity to conduct operas like La Boheme 20 times in different venues and acoustics around the UK. Since taking up the baton at ENO he has been involved with the planning of the company's repertoire and has conducted new productions of operas by Saariaho, Verdi, Bartok and Puccini. He talks about the challenges the company faces. How it has improved its image and work after a period of decline and argues with Norman about the continuance of the company's policy of performing operas in English. Producer Tony Cheevers.
