Out of the destruction of war and disgrace of Nazism, a new (West) Germany emerged after 1945. It was democratic, prosperous, and peaceful. Another caesura occurred in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, East and West. This was 'the end of history.' But history came back with a vengeance. In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. In this episode, historian Jeremi Suri explains why Germans today fear rearmament and militarism may imperil their way of life. Jeremi Suri is the Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Jim Baer talks with Francis Fukuyama — author of The End of History and the Last Man — about the fragility of liberal democracy in an age of rising authoritarianism and deepening polarization. They discuss political decay in the U.S., geopolitical threats from Russia and China, and the outsized influence of social media. Fukuyama also shares a practical vision for rebuilding effective governance through an “abundance agenda” that cuts through gridlock and proves democracy can still deliver.

The apostle Paul was a Jew. He was born, lived, undertook his apostolic work, and died within the milieu of ancient Judaism. And yet, many readers have found, and continue to find, Paul's thought so radical, so Christian, even so anti-Jewish – despite the fact that it, too, is Jewish through and through. This paradox, and the question how we are to explain it, are the foci of Matthew Novenson's groundbreaking book, Paul and Judaism at the End of History (Cambridge University Press, 2024). The solution, says the author, lies in Paul's particular understanding of time. This too is altogether Jewish, with the twist that Paul sees the end of history as present, not future. In the wake of Christ's resurrection, Jews are perfected in righteousness and – like the angels – enabled to live forever, in fulfilment of God's ancient promises to the patriarchs. What is more, gentiles are included in the same pneumatic existence promised to the Jews. This peculiar combination of ethnicity and eschatology yields something that looks not quite like Judaism or Christianity as we are used to thinking of them. Matthew Novenson is the Helen H. P. Manson Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is also an honorary fellow in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh, where previously he held the Chair of Biblical Criticism and Biblical Antiquities. His monographs include Christ among the Messiahs (Oxford University Press, 2012), The Grammar of Messianism (Oxford University Press, 2017), Paul, Then and Now (Eerdmans, 2022), and Paul and Judaism at the End of History (Cambridge University Press, 2024). Jonathon Lookadoo is Associate Professor at the Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary in Seoul, South Korea. While his interests range widely over the world of early Christianity, he is the author of books on the Epistle of Barnabas, Ignatius of Antioch, and the Shepherd of Hermas, including The Christology of Ignatius of Antioch (Cascade, 2023). John Waters discusses his book "The Abolition of Reality: A First Draft of the End of History," exploring the cultural and societal upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He critiques the roles of media, economics, and authority in fostering a climate of fear and control, linking contemporary economic practices to the abolition of the gold standard in 1971. Waters argues that the pandemic served as an orchestrated project undermining human rights, facilitated by a compliant media that prioritized sensationalism over truth. He highlights groupthink's impact on societal panic and the expansion of state control, likening the political response to a predatory instinct to seize power. Waters warns against the normalization of extreme measures and advocates for future awareness and resistance to overreach, emphasizing the importance of documenting these events to prevent history from repeating itself. In this episode, Dr. Matthew Novenson returns to the podcast after his move from the University of Edinburgh to Princeton Theological Seminary. We discuss his new book "Paul and Judaism at the End of History," which develops a radical reframing of how we understand the Apostle Paul: not as someone who rejected Judaism for Christianity, but as a Jewish thinker who believed that history had already ended with the resurrection of Jesus. We unpack into Paul's unique eschatological vision, his understanding of the resurrection, and how modern theological traditions often misread Paul by projecting their own frameworks onto his writings. Themes Discussed Paul's Jewish Context: The conversation highlights how Paul remained deeply Jewish throughout his life, challenging the common notion that he rejected Judaism for Christianity. The End of History: Novenson argues that Paul genuinely believed history had ended with Christ's resurrection, making his theology fundamentally eschatological rather than focused on atonement. Resurrection as Present Reality: For Paul, the resurrection wasn't a distant future event but something already beginning through the Spirit's work in baptized believers. Justification Reframed: The discussion reexamines Paul's concept of justification not as merely a way of "getting right with God" but as participation in the new creation. Keeping Paul Weird: Novenson emphasizes the importance of understanding Paul in his historical context rather than forcing him to fit modern theological frameworks. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Dr. Matthew Novenson is a distinguished New Testament scholar now teaching at Princeton Theological Seminary. His scholarship focuses on Paul's letters, early Judaism, and early Christianity. His latest book, "Paul and Judaism at the End of History," offers a fresh perspective on understanding Paul's theological vision and his relationship to Judaism. Novenson is known for his nuanced approach to historical interpretation that resists simplified readings of Paul through later Christian theological frameworks. After the end of the Cold War, many academics and policymakers believed that a global state of peace was achievable. People talked about a “peace dividend”: A long-term benefit. as budgets for military spending would be redirected to social programs or returned to citizens in the form of lower taxes. Our guest this episode, Bridget Conley, started her career in peacebuilding in the 1990s. At that time, Western academics and politicians spelled out a formula for creating peaceful nations. You would hold elections, convert the economy to a free market, pursue human rights, and prosecute bad actors. But the post 9/11 years showed that the militarized world order was not going away. There's been a push in recent years to localize peace efforts – meaning fund them and run them based on direction from people in the effected countries. But to a considerable extent, peacebuilding still revolves around that formula from the 1990s. That's why Conley launched Disrupting Peace, a podcast that explores why peace hasn't worked, and how it could. Bridget is the research director at the World Peace Foundation, a research organization affiliated with Tufts University. Her research is currently focused on mass incarceration in the United States, and she teaches college classes inside the prison system in Massachusetts as part of the Tufts University Prison Initiative. For Conley, prison abolition and international peacebuilding are all about creating societies that solve problems through debate and discussion, not through coercion. Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Tracy Rosenthal, writer and organizer, to discuss her recent book Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End The Housing Crisis, co-authored with Leonardo Vilchis. Then, she speaks with Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the state of play in Canadian politics as the elections inch closer. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's massive gutting of the FAA, another plane crash in the US, Musk's access to IRS data, DOGE's privacy violations, Trump's attacks on the NPS, HUD, and IRS, Trump's NLRB, Utah's ban on collective bargaining for public sector employees, Hamas' release of hostages, Trump's support for Israel, Trump's threat to education funding, Trump's request to Romania, and major flooding in Kentucky, before watching Mark Levine get Mike Johnson to fully bend the knee to the incel Musk regime. Tracy Rosenthal then joins, briefly touching on her introduction to organizing and her evolution to helping found the LA Tenants Union in 2015 before diving deeper into the massive growth of the renter population (amid dropping homeownership rates) to the point of producing tenant-majority cities. Expanding on this, Rosenthal and Emma unpack the importance of tenant organizing as a source of community power amid the increasing immiseration of the Trump regime, walking through the role landlords played in bolstering his many conspiracies around crime and immigration, and touching on the insane wealth the industry generates. After expanding on the complete normalization of homelessness under capitalism, Tracy steps back to parse the essential role land ownership played in the founding of the US, with the practice of “eviction” central to our practices of ethnic cleansing and playing an important role in aligning white settlers with the state, while the concept of the vote was entirely tethered to a white man's claims to land. Tracy and Emma also assess the insanity of the rent boom over the last decade, with millions putting a majority of their income into keeping a roof over their head, wrapping up the interview with a discussion on what tenant organizing looks like and the importance of getting involved. Luke Savage then joins, jumping right into the recent boost Canada's Trudeau-less Liberal Party has gotten at the hands of Trump's nativist tirades in recent weeks, stepping back to briefly assess the rise and fall of Justin Trudeau from liberal icon to voter anathema, before digging deeper into the rise of the Conservative party over the last couple of election cycles amid COVID and a major Cost of Living crisis, and assessing the strength of their lead before Trump assumed office. After walking through some of the major MAGA-esque players involved in the rise of the Tories, and why the majority of them have acquiesced to Trump's attacks, Savage and Emma wrap up the free half by exploring the likely successor to Trudeau as liberal leader, and what that will mean for a (potentially) impending election. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the insanity of Josh Shapiro's pledge to “work with Republicans” to “aggressively cut taxes,” watches Chris Dols, an Army Corps engineer and union leader, unpack Elon's attack on federal workers, and Jim from Portland calls in to update us on his ongoing graphic novel Kickstarter “F*ck Billionaires.” Hakeem Jeffries says Eric Adams should have the chance to “make his case” to New Yorkers that being in Trump's pocket is okay, actually, Mike Gallagher reveals the reality behind the US TikTok ban, JD Vance pisses off some Germans, and Helen from the Twin Cities discusses debate tactics. Matt Walsh dissects the fundamental differences between Men (need quests) and Women (could never handle a quest), plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with writer Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the current state of Canadian politics. Then, she speaks with Jeff Stein, White House economics reporter at The Washington Post, to discuss his recent multi-part series on economic sanctions for the Post entitled "The Money War." First, Emma runs through updates on the GOP's continuing dysfunction over their spending bill, Trump's prosecution in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal's major report on Biden staffers' extensive work to downplay and hide the state of Biden's mental decline since 2019, the nomination of Pete Hegseth, Amazon teamsters' strike, South Carolina's attack on Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, Israeli's continuing offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, the repatriation of the final inmates in Guantanamo Bay, and the confirmed appearance Bird Flu in the US, before diving a little deeper into “President Musk's” public pressure campaign to get GOP Congresspeople in line with his spending plan. Luke Savage then joins, diving right into the dwindling support for Trudeau's administration in the wake of a weak, nationalist-oriented response to Trump's threat of tariffs against Canada, unpacking the growing dissent from within his coalition before Savage and Emma briefly contrast his response to Trump's threats with that from the US' other neighbor-under-threat in Mexico's President Sheinbaum. Stepping back, Luke examines the rise and fall of Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada, coming to power by leading a major win in 2015 and becoming a hyper-public anti-Trump resistance figure in the process, only for growing economic issues coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic alongside a poor choice by Trudeau to call for snap elections in 2021 putting the Liberal Party in an insecure situation and forcing a deal with the NDP social democrats. Moving forward in the story, Savage walks Emma through the lingering struggles Liberals have faced in the wake of this deal, with their (and Trudeau's, in particular) refusal to acknowledge the ongoing cost of living crisis and the failures of their economic agenda significantly dragging down NDP's public standing to the point of pulling out of the deal this past September, issues capitalized on by a Conservative Party that is, at the bare minimum, willing to recognize the issues facing the Canadian electorate. After expanding on the role of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, his success in hiding his unpopular faux-populist crypto-libertarianism behind direct, issues-based communication, and the pretty clear parallels with Biden and Democrats' recent failures in the 2024 election, Savage wraps up by tackling Canada's dearth of an actual system to remove someone like Trudeau from power, and how this situation could (and is likely to) develop. Jeff Stein then joins, jumping right into his extensive research at the Washington Post into the explosion of the role of sanctions in US foreign policy, and the vast material impact they have on local populations, first outlining how this policy proliferated in the wake of the serious backlash to US military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan – with Joe Biden taking Trump's expansion of the sanction regime to an entirely new level after Russia's invasion of Ukraine – and how it aligns with the increasing power of the executive branch. Stepping back, Stein walks Emma through the role sanctions play in avoiding both military AND diplomatic intervention on the global stage, despite minimal evidence of their efficacy, and the growing worry inside of government of their long-term impacts with limited short-term benefits, before they wrap up with the myriad material issues that have arisen from the expansion of the US sanction regime, with devastating effects on the abused and exploited populations that these sanctions are ostensibly issued in response to, alongside the (less devastating) unforeseen financial costs to US taxpayers. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they do a deep dive into the recent Wall Street Journal report tracing Biden's staffers' extensive efforts – beginning in 2019 – to hide and disguise Biden's mental decline from the public, before touching on the continuing cult of senility around Biden. A Jersey caller unpacks breaking through the media's commitment to Democratic leadership, Alex from Oakland unpacks Biden's plan to encourage AI data centers on federal land, and the MR Crew explores the NYPD's ongoing crackdown on Amazon teamsters' labor action. Today's bad idea concerns history itself: David talks to world historian Ayse Zarakol about the temptations and the pitfalls of the idea of The End of History. Francis Fukuyama popularised the phrase in 1989 at the end of the Cold War. What did his vision of the triumph of liberal democracy miss? Was it a Western fantasy or a modern fantasy or both? How has history exacted its revenge? And if history doesn't end, does it repeat? Coming on Saturday a bonus bad idea to accompany this series: David talks to Lucia Rubinelli about what's gone wrong with the idea of sovereignty. Jeffrey Ladish is the director of Palisades research, and AI safety organization based in the San Francisco Bay. Our previous conversations about the dangers of AI left us insufficiently concerned. Ladish takes up the mantle of trying to convince us that there's something worth worrying about by detailing the various projects and experiments that Palisades has been undertaking with the goal of demonstrating that AI agents let loose on the world are capable of wreaking far more havoc than we expect. We leave the conversation more wary of the machines than ever - less because we think hyper-intelligent machines are just around the corner, and more because Ladish paints a visceral picture of the cage we're building ourself into. On liberal takes on the end of the End of History. [Patreon Exclusive] We start by discussing Yasha Mounk's dismissal of an end to the End of History. Does he underestimate liberal democracy's inability to legitimise itself anymore? Is the talk of populism a way of deflecting from liberalism's undoing? In this one I dive deep into the peculiar tension that Gen Z and younger millennials are feeling around today's cultural and political landscape. But it's not just about politics or the rise of certain obvious and overdone characters like….Trump. It's about something more pervasive, something beyond current discourse. Imagine being caught in a strange subliminal space…where meaning, once anchored by grand narratives, is evaporating faster than we can grasp. I'm not making a value judgement on this idea either…maybe those grand narratives need to fall in on themselves. I'm into it. But what happens when the rebellions of past generations—once fueled by dreams of change—become nothing more than empty aesthetics? Hippie culture, cyberpunk, punk rock: all absorbed by the very systems they sought to dismantle, now sold as commodities.Any symbol of rebellion that ends up as a Halloween costume? You've lost it. It's dead. A ghost of what it once was. Time to move on. It's been hollowed out by the center. Are we losing sleep over political collapse? Should we? Instead, we're struggling with the suffocating sense of stagnation. Whether it's politics, where new faces are just sequels of the old…our current culture, where the freshest ideas feel like polished-up retreads. We're stuck in a loop…Marvel superheroes, Disney remakes, even Barbie got a reboot. It's reboots all the way down! So, the big question here: Are we trapped in a rebooted reality? Is everything—from the content we consume to our political choices—just a remix of what's come before? And more crucially, is there a way out of this loop, or are we doomed to keep recycling the same stale narratives forever? I'm trying to explore this disorienting moment in time, where the future feels like a nostalgic rerun but the nostalgic feeling is overstaying its welcome. Anyway….thanks for listening and I'll be doing a branch off of this as a Part 2. This is a public episode.
