Kathy and Philippa review the film Tár, a psychological drama featuring the queen of acting, Cate Blanchett. The film centers around Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra. Lydia's life unravels after being accused of misconduct. Tár is full of subtleties, assumptions, and unfinished scenes (in Kathy's opinion). Tune in and discover why Philippa liked it, why Kathy couldn't figure out what was happening, and what they both thought about the film overall (you could say they are the lesbian Siskel and Ebert). “You want to dance the masque, you must service the composer. You gotta sublimate yourself, your ego, and, yes, your identity. You must, in fact, stand in front of the public and God and obliterate yourself.”A Cinematic Masterpiece from Director Todd FieldDirector Todd Field may not be a prolific filmmaker, but his small body of work showcases his incredible talent and strong voice. After a 16-year hiatus, Field returns to the director's chair with Tár, a film that has been praised as a perfect piece of cinema and a masterful character study.Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2023 DGA Awards Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film Nominees series with a conversation about Tár.Conducting a Symphony of Power and ManipulationIn our discussion of Tár, we dive into the complex themes and character dynamics that make this film so compelling. We explore how the film positions Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) as an antagonist against youth perspectives on art versus the artist, and how her own ideology and manipulative behavior inevitably lead to her downfall. We also delve into the gender dynamics at play in the film, with Tár using her power and position as a woman in a male-dominated field to manipulate and control those around her. Blanchett's performance is a standout, delivering a believable portrayal of a diabolical character that is rarely seen played by women in film.Other topics covered in our conversation include:The film's unorthodox opening credits and how they set the stage for the storyThe signature scene of Tár's guest lecture at Juilliard and how it represents the film's central themesThe inevitability of Tár's behavior and how the film builds a case for her corruption by powerThe importance of representation and understanding changing perspectives in the artsTár is a film that showcases the incredible talent of both its director and lead actress, delivering a powerful character study that explores themes of power, manipulation, and the corrupting influence of artistic genius. Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. Date de sortie : 24 janvier 2023 © 2023 – Universal Pictures Musiques : © Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp Minor / Pt. 1 - I. Trauermarsch & II. For more than a year now, I've been obsessed with TÁR, the 2022 Todd Field film starring Cate Blanchett as an orchestral conductor whose power plays lead to her devastating downfall. Yes, the story is gripping and suspenseful, but it's the music interlaced throughout the film that keeps me coming back. Aside from the two works performed in the film — Mahler's Fifth Symphony and Elgar's Cello Concerto — which were baked into Field's script, the music you hear throughout TÁR is the result of months of work by the film's music supervisor, Lucy Bright. A specialist in the arenas of film and television scoring, Bright has worked with some of today's biggest composers — including Nico Muhly, Michael Nyman, and Volker Bertelmann — on projects ranging from Assassin's Creed to Aftersun and The Iron Claw. But what exactly does a music supervisor do on a film of this scale? Turns out, it's a lot. From working with a team of on-set sound engineers who specialize in recording symphony orchestras to developing the film's Deutsche Grammophon concept album and recreating Urbie Green's 1967 recording of "Twenty-one Trombones," Bright was kept busy managing countless aspects of the film's musical atmosphere across three countries. In this episode of the Classical Post podcast, I speak with Bright about the expert levels of coordination and collaboration vital to her work, working with the Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir to realize Lydia Tár's compositions, and what it was like seeing Cate Blanchett raise a baton to conduct Mahler. Plus, she shares her fascinating history with modern architecture, her go-to burger place in New York City, and the therapeutic benefits of swimming in the natural springs of London's Hampstead Heath. On this episode of Time on Screen, Zach welcomes Worn & Wound contributor Brett Braley to the podcast to talk about Todd Field's Tár, starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, one of the most memorable movie characters in years. Tár became an object of fascination for many movie lovers a year ago when it hit theaters. In a period of time dominated by mass market, IP derived entertainment, Tár stands out as a film filled with ideas, with an all-time great performance from Blanchett at the center of it. Brett has a background in menswear and other pockets of the luxury world, making him the perfect guest to discuss the many aesthetic pleasures of Tár, from Lydia's costuming to the immaculate set and production design.
Writer/director Todd Field joins moderator Tyler Morgenstern (Assistant Director of the Carsey-Wolf Center) in a post-screening discussion of TÁR. Field details the origins and development of the film, including the creation of protagonist Lydia Tár. He elaborates on the public persona she curates in the film and larger thematic questions of exploitation, cultural authority, and the geopolitics of abuse. Lydia Tár is back and better than ever. On today's episode, we received a phone call from Focus Features' CEO Peter Kujawski to develop a sequel to their surprise 2022 hit. Disclaimer: SPOILERS!! Juan, Marc, and Kevin sync up and get in tune to review the 2022 film "Tár", directed by Todd Field and starring Cate Blanchett. Lydia Tár (Blanchett) is one of the most famous classical music conductors/maestros in the world, who is also at the top of her game. She keeps a busy, jet-setting schedule and balances a lot of plates. She also has an inclination for control, domination, power, and playing people like the symphonies she so famously conducts. When some skeletons come a-knockin', will Lydia be able able to keep a-rockin' in the free world, or will her latest performance be "canceled"? This film was up for some of the biggest awards in the film industry but it was also controversial. Listen as the fellas dive in and discuss these topics in ways that might just piss someone off (cause, you know, 2023 and all). It's been a a few months since Todd Field's massively acclaimed film "TÁR" was released in America, but between its Oscar nominations — for Field, Cate Blanchett, Best Picture, and more — all the Lydia Tár memes, and the debates its ending continues to inspire, we figured there was no better time to discuss it than the present. Topics include the film's depiction of and engagement with classical music and the MeToo movement, sublime performances by Blanchett and supporting actor Nina Hoss, the film's wobbly ending and blinkered worldview, and more.

Women conductors are in the limelight this week with a film called “Tar”, which opens in cinemas today, starring Cate Blanchett depicting the life of Lydia Tár - a fictional world-renowned composer-conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. The American conductor Marin Alsop famously observed that women are more likely to lead a G7 country or become four-star generals in the US Army than they are to be the principal conductor of a big orchestra. Anita Rani speaks to one our listener Emma Warren who got in touch with us as she is the only woman on her choral conducting course at The Royal Academy and Joséphine Korda who has just been announced by Opera North as their latest Female Conductor Trainee. Yesterday we talked about Andrew Tate and other social media influencers who are spreading misogynistic messages online. Several listeners got in touch to tell us about how their children have come across this kind of material and with concerns about how best to talk about it with them. Anita is joined by Dr Emily Setty, Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey who does research in schools with young people about sex and relationships and Michael Conroy founder of Men at Work, an organisation that trains professionals how to have constructive dialogue with boys. Jenny Beavan has spent over 40 years dressing the greats of Hollywood for film and screen. She is an 11 time Oscar nominated (and 3 time Oscar winning) costume designer, whose work you will be familiar with from films such as Sense and Sensibility, The King's Speech, and Mad Max: Fury Road. She has just been longlisted for the BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. The film tells the story of Ada Harris, played by Lesley Manville, a cleaning lady who – unsurprisingly – travels to Paris, after she sees a Dior dress belonging to one of her clients and is determined to own one of her own. Jenny joins Anita to tell us about the process of recreating old Dior designs and the transformative power of that perfect dress! More than 25 years ago, the World Health Organisation made a commitment to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation across the world. Despite this, around eight thousand women and girls each day go through FGM. To understand why this is still happening, Anita Rani will hear from WHO researcher Dr Christina Pallitto and charity CEO Nkatha Mugao, who helps women and girls in Kenya who have been cut, and is working to stop FGM.
Writer-director Todd Field made two acclaimed films in the early 2000s and then disappeared from the big screen for 16 years. “Tár,” about the scandalous downfall of a classical music conductor, marks his return. The movie burst forth in dramatic fashion: Its screenplay took him only three months to write. In this episode of “The Envelope,” Field breaks down how a Górecki composition inspired the internal rhythm of lead character Lydia Tár and discusses what it was like collaborating with star Cate Blanchett, who “always wants to do things that are dangerous.” He also explains why he's delighted by reactions to his film — even those that are ferociously dismissive. First, Katey Rich talks to the star and director of Empire of Light, inspired by the loneliness of early pandemic lockdowns and Mendes's own mother. Then Rebecca Ford talks to the writer and director of Tár, who is happy about any fan theories about his movie— but won't reveal how Lydia Tár got her EGOT. In TÁR, Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a fictional world famous female conductor and composer whose life takes a dramatic downturn after serious allegations are made against her. Cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister and director Todd Field made a conscious choice to “not put a hat on a hat”- keeping the cinematography very restrained and still throughout most of the film. The focus remained on the music and the performances, with little camera movement save for a few orchestra scenes and the finale of the movie. Florian found Field to have a very precise visual sensitivity so he was able to light the space and still allow the actors to have freedom of movement within the scene while shaping the light more precisely as needed. Florian wanted the precision of his cinematography to reflect the precision of the orchestra. His work also aided the storytelling- carefully deciding where to place the camera and what to focus on allows TÁR to unfold in a slow burn, as the movie purposefully omits information and significant details at first. Florian feels that really good cinema leaves room for reflection and allows us to develop our own perceptions about the story. TÁR allows the audience to see itself and think about the time we're living in, and it feels both timeless and contemporary. He found it an equal privilege to work with an actor like Cate Blanchett because she has a dedication to her craft and a focus on getting the best out of every single shot. She has a good understanding of the technical elements necessary to showcase the best performances. Florian is currently shooting the new season of HBO's True Detective in Iceland. A long time ago, in a galaxy, far, far away... Well, actually, just a few weeks ago, right here on the good old internet, our esteemed colleague, The New Yorker's Richard Brody, tweeted out two simple words: TÁR WARS. He was referring, of course, to the swirl of controversy around TÁR, one of this year's most talked-about films. The movie, directed by Todd Fields and featuring a central performance from Cate Blanchett, tracks the gradual downfall of one Lydia Tár, the egomaniacal and possibly predatory conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Though a likely lock for many end-of-year lists, TÁR has been fairly divisive among critics. So for today's podcast, Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute took inspiration from Mr. Brody's tweet and invited two well-matched gladiators—the valiant Jessica Kiang on the pro-side and the courageous Nathan Lee on the con—to debate the relative merits and demerits of TÁR. Two critics enter, one critic leaves… May the best critic win!
This week's Nose has enrolled itself as an ultrasonic epistemic dissident. Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story is a new memoir by Bono. It's largely illustrated essays telling the stories of particular songs (40 of them, one imagines). It's currently No. 2 on The New York Times Hardcover Best Sellers List. As such, Bono has been everywhere lately. As such, The Nose got to thinking about the tension between Bono, the actual big-deal important figure, and Bono, the guy who seems to mostly annoy everybody all the time. And: Tár is Todd Field's third feature film as writer and director, his first in 16 years. It stars Cate Blanchett as the iconic fictional musician and conductor Lydia Tár, and it won Blanchett the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at this year's Venice International Film Festival. Lydia, played by Cate Blanchett, is the first symphony conductor of a German orchestra, her reputation one of prestige, until her conduct is called into question, threatening the persona she has meticulously crafted. John Horn speaks with actor Cate Blanchett and director Todd Field about bringing this complicated character to life on screen.
