This episode of Breathe Out contains some topics that may be sensitive for some listeners, and parental supervision of young listeners is advised. Elijah Rising was founded in 2012 as a prayer circle that wanted to end human trafficking in the Greater Houston Area. Today, their organization has grown significantly and works to end sex trafficking through prayer, awareness, intervention, and restoration. We are joined in this episode by Elijah Rising's Director of Marketing, David Gamboa. He shares how he got involved with their mission and how God called him to pursue this full-time. He shares stories of men & women whose lives have been saved by Christ and restored through the services Elijah Rising provides, such as housing, recovery services, reunification with family, and so much more. Elijah in The Bible used his fiery spirit to speak out and act upon what it right and what is wrong. We are so honored to have Elijah Rising as one of our philanthropic partners to be a part of impactful change. Our Tee Up Together for Charity event will benefit their organization, and 100% of the proceeds made at this event will go toward their mission. Why and how do we address recovery in Elijah Rising Restorative Care?In this episode, Jessica Gobble, Elijah Rising's Recovery Specialist, explains how addiction feeds trafficking and trafficking feeds addiction. Traffickers have learned that they are able to make more profit off of an exploited individual when they exploit them in multiple ways. For instance, if a trafficker coerces a woman into transporting drugs across the border, distributing them, and then engaging in prostitution, they generate more profit compared to solely exploiting them for sex. This overlap between addiction and trafficking is prevalent for numerous reasons. Jessica also discusses:The distinction between forced and voluntary drug use, and their distinct impacts on individuals. The significance of medical detox and its role in the recovery process. The importance of empowering individuals to direct their own healing journey and providing support as allies. "I wasn't a bad guy, I didn't do wrong things, I did everything to care for my children. But I didn't understand that caring for my family meant caring for my wife. I worked hard but I didn't often put her first. I put my own interest before my marriage. Really, more of the problems were centered around me and her processing through me putting her second. Studies show that over 90% of victims of trafficking have had some involvement with drug or alcohol abuse, whether voluntary or involuntary. You really can't talk about one without the other. We have found in our work at Elijah Rising that most women we serve have experience with drug or alcohol addiction, and Sharpen Recovery has found that many women they serve in recovery have also been trafficked. We want to work to bridge the gap between the recovery community and the anti-trafficking community, so we sat down with our Recovery Coordinator, Jessica Gobble and the Founder/Executive Director of Sharpen Recovery, Nick Long. We talked about how critical it is for anti-trafficking organizations to have recovery resources and how critical it is for recovery organizations to have an awareness of trafficking. As Christians, we are called to care for people. We are called to love our neighbor. And according to Jesus our neighbor isn't always the people that we would choose or think for ourselves. Well, at WellHouse Church we have chosen to care for the victims of sex trafficking - the people who have been exploited and enslaved into sex work. Join us on this episode as Pastor Cullen talks with Adam Chaney the Director of Development at Elijah Rising about the new partnership that WellHouse Church has with Elijah Rising in this Gospel Work. Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. At WellHouse, we believe that the people of God are the church and that the love of God should be experienced through the people of God. So, WellHouse has returned to a New Testament expression of our faith by meeting in homes and dedicating ourselves to: the teaching of the scriptures, the fellowship of the believers, the breaking of bread together, and praying together for one another. We are focused on being a genuine expression of Christian hospitality and service to our community and the people of our community. At WellHouse we want to be a place where people can Be Real, Be Relational, and Be Restored. As our leadership was dreaming up this vision, we looked at Scripture and saw that the earliest expressions of the church met in homes and it was rare that all of the believers were together. Today, most churches have found themselves spending a large portion of their budget on buildings that they rarely use. Not WellHouse. We want to keep our overhead low so we can spend our money on the things that matter, being the hands and feet of Jesus. So, we meet in the homes of our members for the majority of our meetings. Once per month, we all come together at a rented facility to devote our selves together as the whole church for the purpose of worshipping God together.
What is social justice? Should we even care about social justice? What should the role of the church be in social justice? All of these things are talked about in this episode of Let's Talk.
