Poetic constraints may feel limiting to some, but for others, they spark creativity. In this episode, Erica Reid discusses the freedom and discovery of poetic forms. Plus, she talks with Jared about returning to school 15 years after her undergraduate degree, attending a low-res program with a strong sense of community and a dedication to centering the writer in workshop, and how her experience working at a literary magazine shaped her understanding of rejection. Erica Reid lives in Fort Collins, Colorado. She earned her MFA at Western Colorado University (‘22) and serves as assistant editor at THINK Journal. In 2022 she was nominated for Best New Poets; in 2021 her poetry won the Yellowwood Poetry Prize and the Helen Schaible Sonnet Contest (Modern Sonnets category), was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and was commissioned by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. There was a great Chicago Reader article in 2009 when China Place Liquor City opened in Chicago and it took us years to get down there and finally get some bottles and baijiu and then several more to film more Drunk Monkeys and finally try Red Star Erguotou Baijiu on-air for you.
Marolo also makes a wonderful Chamomile Grappa and, spoiler alert, Jen and Erica are not drinking that in this episode. They *are* trying Marolo Grappa di Barolo. Look, at this point in filming a season, we're all several drinks into the night, if you know what I mean.
Rosé was the trendy flavor of the summer and so Jen and Erica are trying Svedka Rosé Vodka, vodka with added Rosé wine.
Let's say right off the bat that we don't blame Ricura Horchata -- it's a cream-based liqueur and however long that should be fresh, we're sure it was sitting around the house for far longer than that.
Jen and Erica have some trouble saying "Bulle Rock" but they get there while tasting Copper Horse Bulle Rock Gin.
Jen and Erica are trying a Stroop Waffel liqueur available in the US from World Market.
Jen and Erica are starting off the season with a gauntlet! Friend of the show John Mannion, who has his own show John Drinks, sent us a box of Drinks by Dram. The set came with five mini-bottles and we drink them all in a single episode. We plow through: * Williams Chase Pink Grapefruit Gin * Chase Eureka Lemon Marmalade Vodka * Sharish Blue Magic Gin * Dark Matter Spiced Rum * Ableforth's Cold-Distilled Absinthe
