Carol Roberts, head of Young People's Services at Troy Public Library, recommends three books by Black authors for Black History Month, plus one on Chinese cuisine and history. "A History of Me" (Adrea Theodore, ill. Erin Robinson, 2022, for ages 5-8) explores the author's experience of being the only person of color in school as slavery is discussed. The young-adult novel "Opposite of Always" (Justin A. Reynolds, 2019) presents the story of a boy falling for a girl who dies of sickle cell anemia, and his Groundhogs-Day-like replaying of the day they met. "Ellie Engle Saves Herself" (Leah Johnson, 2023), the story of a 12-year-old queer Black girl who feels unexceptional until she develops the superpower to bring dead things to life, deals with the difficulties of surviving middle school. Just in time for Lunar New Year, the fourth book, "Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods" (Grace Lin, 2023) tells the origin stories for various popular Chinese dishes, with one recipe for the author's mother's scallion pancakes. It's billed for ages ~8-12, but sounds like a yummy book for all readers. For more details, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
The open science movement is an experiment, but it's an experiment that has a lot of merit when it comes to its vision of equitable transparency, accessibility and collaboration for better science, and a better world. So how do we begin to transition our own practices towards those of open science? In this episode, we speak with Julia Stewart Lowndes, Founding Director of Openscapes, and her collaborator, Erin Robinson, CEO and Co-Founder of Metadata Game Changers, about Openscapes, an organization that engages, empowers, and amplifies researchers with open habits and mindsets for data-intensive science.
How do you cope as a leader when a traumatic situation occurs? On this weeks episode we speak to Erin Robinson, Head of Secondary, Atlanda International School and Elsa Donohue, Head of School, Vientiane International School. They discuss the traumatic situations that occurred in their relative schools, how they dealt with it, and give us some wonderful leadership insights for how we too can lead through trauma situations.
Dipping into the expedition a third of the way through. Aparna Uppaluri and Ana Luz Porzecanski have repositioned privilege as responsibility and power as energy. Aparna has got me through my struggles on the link between motherhood and leadership with the word motherness. Ana Luz has brought love into the equation, and she is playing with ideas around cycles in leadership, cyclical being a concept very familiar to women. Katya Guryeva thinks spirituality is avoided by leaders who want certainly in things. And Katya shares what she has learnt from Melissa Kwee about giving. This episode gives you a sense of what three members of the expedition are thinking, where their thinking is going, what they are discovering and what remains opaque or clouded for them. And they share some of their hunches. And it's only 3 members speaking of the 24 members! So the expedition is alive and well! Note, I shared the other day that Erin Robinson and I are going to do a podcast episode on education and specifically speculate why if a school hits a major traumatic incident, you better hope that the head is a woman. Immediately Elsa Donohue got in touch and offered her amazing insights. So she is now part of the episode. It's fabulous when we hear from you, please shout out whenever. Thank you ….

Erin Robinson admits that once upon a time, she simply didn’t know that community cats existed, let alone what you were supposed to do about them. That all began to change when she started volunteering in a county animal services facility during college in North Carolina, and when she went on to work for a high-volume spay/neuter clinic connected to Operation Catnip in Gainsville, Florida. Erin hasn’t stopped working with community cats since, and she worked with Alley Cat Allies before landing her current role as Community Cats Program Manager at Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, D.C. Over the past decade, Humane Rescue Alliance’s community cat programs have gone from being a small, grassroots, volunteer-based part of the organization to becoming truly mission-critical. The program offers free TNR for cats within Washington, D.C., including spay/neuter surgery, distemper and rabies vaccinations, topical treatment for parasites, and microchipping as part of their TNR packages. Erin feels that it’s important to do as much as possible for community cats’ health in one visit, as it’s likely that this will be the only touch point the organization will have with these cats. The program is funded by donors, and includes a relocation program called Blue Collar Cats for cats who are TNR candidates, but who don’t have a safe place to return. Through this program, which has already placed 117 cats, cats are relocated to a business or homeowner who has reached out to request a cat. The program has very careful acclimation guidelines (available on the program website), and while most adopters are looking for assistance with rodent control, Erin stresses that these folks are truly giving these cats a new lease on life by adopting them. She is tracking retention and while initial results look great, Erin looks forward to reporting back on the program’s numbers in a few years to see how it’s working. A true believer in the importance of data and metrics, Erin is eager to work on collecting statistics on this and other programs to assist folks with convincing others that TNR is the right way to handle community cat populations. To learn more, visit humanerescuealliance.org/communitycats, where you can connect directly to the Blue Collar Cats website as well.
Well, hello y'all, back here with a Brain Breather. Just so you know, this is a few weeks ago that I did this one, that's how Brain Breathers work, if you dig 'em and want 'em fresh and hot they come out much earlier along the timeline on Patreon.com/mygoodbadbrain.This ep caught me a day or so after having a terrible depression bubble, I talk a bit about systems I decided to try of self-care and I'm happy to report, 5 weeks or so later on, the exercise regimen I got on back then TRULY worked! Not like fixing me forever but definitely making any derailment or episode I've had since be easier to manage and quicker to get back on track from. Anyway, hope you get something out of this BB ep, see you next week with another longer interview. If you didn't hear last week's interview about faith and brains and such with Erin Robinson, be sure to check that out! It was a GOOD one.Okay, self-care, hydrate, be well!(PS: If you're diggin' the pod, why not throw us a couple bucks on Patreon.com/mygoodbadbrain !? Something to consider! Ok, cool, thank you for consideration, bbbbbbbyyyyyye~~~!) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Today the wonderful Erin Robinson, my good pal from ClevverTV, joins me to speak about faith. I mean, a lot of things, and as always mental health focused, but Erin is one of my few friends who is a truly practicing Christian and i wanted to talk to her about what part her faith plays in her sense of the world. She is very generously open about her experiences with death, leaving home, growing up around prejudice, eating disorders, and meeting her wrathful instincts with love. She's just terrific and we both got a bit emotional during this episode. I really hope you get something out of it or at least enjoy the convo.(Also, we're on SPOTIFY now! Yay! If you feel like supporting the pod, sign up to do so at patreon.com/mygoodbadbrain, or just leave a nice review! Very helpful stuff, thank you!) ETAO Podcast, Episode 18. Erin Robinson of Ivy Games stops by to discuss Gravity Ghost, her work teaching game design at Columbia College Chicago, talking animals, not-talking animals, and the previously untapped power fantasy of terraforming planets with one’s long, beautiful hair. Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) Built to Play explores the great beyond with games about the human heart, the future and cosmological afterlife. It's taken us a few weeks to get back into gear thanks to DICE, GDC and PAX East all being in short succession of each other, as people are either at a conference or will be soon. With that in mind, welcome to our first theme of 2015, Space. We're going to explore games and media's relationship to space and how it was almost inevitable that the black background of early video games would be explained as "Oh, that's just space." Not included on that list funnily enough is Space Invaders, which takes place in the upper atmosphere and therefore has no excuse. Infinity, whether it's expressed as the infinite blackness of the void or the range of infinite possibilities, has often been alluded to by games. In Gravity Ghost,Erin Robinson uses our impression of space as a glimmering and distant wonder to set a stage for a purgatory of sorts, where hurts can be healed and children can be redeemed. Zach Gage doesn't refer to space at all in #Fortune, unless one is lucky enough to have a prediction involving it. Instead, #Fortune reaches into the seemingly infinite output of Twitter and delivers an often random collection of potential events. Both projects attempt to describe something beyond us, the future or death (or maybe both), and trust that we'll like what they find. With the vaguely philosophical rambling out of the way, on this week's episode you will find the following: Zach Gage on sharing, tweets, and his leather box that predicts the future (00:30-11:55) We cover the news. ** Evolve has too much DLC.We cast the Zelda TV show. Peter Molyneux breaks one promise too many, and John Walker attacks. (11:55-37:30)** Yosef Safi Harb on playing with our heartbeat and howSkip a Beatcan teach you more about your body. (37:30-46:30) Erin Robinson on her new game Gravity Ghost and the relationship between space, loss and growing up.
