This week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast came together by way of my colleague and friend Keenan Kush, who jokingly referred to the music of today's guests as "Keenan-core." We've got a conversation between the duos Kit Sebastian and Pearl & The Oysters. Kit Sebastian came together in London, but their musical (and even geographical) pedigrees are spread much wider. Kit Martin and Merve Erdem, now based in Turkey and France, play music that reflects their locations. Tropicalia and psychedelic pop flirt with an array of other influences to create something that sounds almost out of time. Their latest album New Internationale came out last year on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, and it adds Azerbaijani and some funk to the mix. Check out the track “Faust” right here. Pearl & The Oysters is also a duo with international roots, having moved from France over a decade ago to Florida, but ending up in Los Angeles. Jazz and Tropicalia also inform their indie pop, and they also ended up on a hip label run by another musician: In this case, Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw. Juliette Pearl Davis and Joachim Polack—sometimes known as Juju and Jojo—put out a great album last year called Planet Pearl. Check out “Side Quest” from that album right here. In this wide-ranging conversation, these two duos talk about their geographic moves and sounds, analog vs. digital recording, favorite filmmakers, and how one cold email kickstarted Kit Sebastian. Enjoy. Clint had to take an unexpected trip to Gainsville, Florida, and attend a dental board meeting. He learned some pearls he thought he should share to help listeners avoid any potential trouble in the future. Russell also shares going to the new Implant Pathways center in Arizona and how rad it is. In summation to avoid problems with a dental board: 1) Shit's gonna happen 2) Document, document, document 3) Contact your patient and show concern; document that you contacted your patient 4) Be honest—with your patient, your lawyer, in your notes, in your testimony to the board. Honesty is the best policy. 5) Refer when indicated. Referring and documenting that you referred can go a long way.

This week we are covering the horrifying real life events that inspired the horror movie ‘Scream'. The university town of Gainesville Florida was shaken in 1990 when 5 students, Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Tracy Paules, and Manny Taboada, were brutally murdered over the course of 4 days in August, right before the fall semester was about to begin. Investigators eventually linked Danny Rolling to the slayings and he was dubbed ‘The Gainesville Ripper' by the media. However, investigators would uncover that Danny's brutal crimes extended beyond Gainesville. In late August 1990, Gainesville, Florida, was bustling with the excitement of college students returning to the University of Florida for the Fall semester. However, the anticipation of a new school year quickly turned to horror on August 26, when two students, Christi Powell and Sonja Larson, were discovered brutally murdered in their off-campus apartment. This gruesome discovery was only the beginning. Within two days, three more students were viciously killed in their own apartments. The once vibrant town was now gripped by fear, as students worried they'd be the next victim of the serial killer nicknamed the Gainesville Ripper. Jim and Fred recently took a road trip to visit several springs in central Florida near Gainsville and near Orlando. In this episode we explore O'Leno State Park where the Santa Fe rive vanishes into the ground to reappear 3 miles late in River Rise State Park. In addition, they visit Blue Springs State Park where Jim used to scuba dive back in the late 1960s and where Jacques Cousteau filmed one of his special on manatees. In fact, there were several manatees in the Blue Run!
In the beginning it appeared as if Paul Eugene Rowles was an easy criminal to work with if there ever was such a thing. Almost every time he was confronted about a crime he would quickly crumble and admit to it if he was in fact the man who had committed the act, but eventually that all changed. Due to that fact we just can't be sure exactly what he's done, but what we do know is grim to say the least.SOURCES: On the trail of a serial killer. By Glenn Garvin - MiamiHerald.com. Stuart's Bio I began my cure as rector of Grace in early January 2014, after serving as Senior Associate at St. Benedict's in Smyrna, Georgia, for over five years. Working with the entire leadership team at Grace, I have a particular passion for the intersection of contemplative practices and congregational development. Grace is an extraordinary community of nearly one thousand souls, and I feel blessed to live and pray among them as we prepare to celebrate our Bicentennial in 2028. I also serve as Assistant Professor in the Practice of Spiritual Formation and Ministry at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. At Candler, I focus on the contextual education of the Episcopal and Anglican seminarians, exploring the dynamics of congregational life in a “laboratory of spiritual imagination.” Candler School of Theology Anglican/Episcopal Studies Program My broader work as a priest, teacher, retreat leader, and author is grounded in the Christian contemplative tradition. I continue to share in ongoing conversations with friends from the New Contemplative Exchange, a fellowship first gathered by Thomas Keating, Richard Rohr, Tilden Edwards, and Laurence Freeman at St. Benedict's Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado in August 2017. Since that time, I contributed to and co-edited the volume Contemplation and Community: A Gathering of Fresh Voices for a Living Tradition (Crossroad, 2019) and am the author of The Heart of a Calling: The Practice of Christian Mindfulness in Congregational Ministry (Crossroad, 2021). Before “church life,” I studied in the pre-med program at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas (B.S. in Biology, summa cum laude), and I did my initial theological studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia (M.Div, honors in spiritual formation). I also completed a certificate in Anglican Studies and the Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee. With the global contemplative community, I have worked with the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, the World Community for Christian Meditation, Contemplative Outreach, the Candler School of Theology, Mepkin Abbey, and others. As well, I continue my practice and research into the connections between the Christian contemplative tradition and the Tibetan/Himalayan Buddhism, and I have a deep appreciation for the intersection of poetry and contemplative practice. Scowl is one of a handful of new hardcore bands blowing up at the moment. And, more importantly, they are a band with ska roots. Specifically, their bassist Bailey Lupo, who used to play bass in San Jose ska-punk band The Caps (or CAPS). So, we brought them on to get all the deets on their ska past. Bailey told us about packing records at Asian Man Records as a teen. (They begged Mike Park to release the Scowl record in 2020, but he passed). Bailey talked about recently meeting JER in Gainsville and vowed to our audience that, one day, Scowl would collaborate with Skatune Network. And they talked about the bands that influenced The Caps: The Specials, Choking Victim and a whole slew of surf bands. But we got even deeper and talked about the late 2000s/early 2010s San Jose punk scene they came from and talked about legendary groups like Leer, Hard Girls (featuring Jeff Rosenstock's guitarist Mike Huguenor), Monstrauss (Who played ska & grunge ie Skunge), Matsuri, Stickup Kid and Point of View. And of course, we had to talk about San Jose's weirdest punk venue, Nickel City. Hyper Ska artist Eichlers wrote a song about the venue on their sophomore record. We also talk about touring with Limp Bizkit, what it was like to have thousands of kids show up to their Real Bay Shit shows, seeing Laura Stevenson at a backyard BBQ in San Jose, and we discuss the horrible Punknews comments they sifted through every day. Most importantly, we talked about Adam and Aaron's old band, Gnarboots! Support the show

So far this month we are 23-15 For +18.5 Units1. New Orleans Pelicans vs. Detroit Pistons For 2 Units* The Pistons have lost six of their last ten and they are also on a back to back* Pelicans when healthy are a wagon and not the one they used to have to use for Zion to get his gumbo* Love the Pelicans, fade an awful Eastern Conference team and make some money2. Sacramento Kings vs. Milwaukee Bucks Over 234.5 For 2 Units* Plain and simple Sacramento and Milwaukee have gone over in 10 straight H2H* Why would I bet against that trend ending? Lots of points, yes, but they both score a ton and the Kings play no defense either.* Giannis might drop 40, Fox and Sabonis may combine for 60, let's have an offensive explosion on a Wednesday night. 3. Vancouver Canucks -120 vs. San Jose Sharks 6.5* Vancouver has also won 8 of their last 10 over San Jose including 6 straight* Vancouver is just in better form and even on the road I don't see them slipping up tonight* Martin has also been solid in nets, not solid on Kahkonen for San Jose4. Eastern Kentucky Colonels +27.5 vs. Tennessee Volunteers -110 For 2 Units* I won't say anything crazy like winning is in the question, but Tennessee may need to score 90-100 to cover* Even an off-shooting night for the Colonels puts them at around 65 points, so I don't know if Tennessee will score enough to cover* Volunteers win, but perhaps just by 15-20. 5. Connecticut -3.5 vs. Florida -125 For 2 Units* This is never easy to beat Florida on the road in Gainsville but feels like Florida is outmatched* Both teams shoot the ball well, but UConn is better from 3, Both teams rebound well, but slight edge to UConn* And UConn is the 12th best defensive team in the country, gimme the HuskiesOther Potential Betting Leans Included TodayNBAChicago Bulls -5.5 vs. Washington Wizards -110Golden State Warriors vs. Utah Jazz Under 239.5 -110NHLCalgary Flames ML vs. Minnesota Wild -135CBBNebraska Cornhuskers +12 vs. Indiana Hooisers -110Drop A 5-Star Review & Follow Us On All Our Social Media PlatformsTwitter Facebook YoutubeAlso, Go & Check Out Our Phenomenal Sponsors Down Below!Sign Up For Bet99 HereCheck Out Last Mountain Distillery Here This is a public episode. Danny Rolling was convicted of murdering five students in Gainsville, Florida, over four days in late August 1990 (he claimed to have killed eight people in addition to committing numerous rapes). The Gainsville murders were particularly horrible; after raping and stabbing them, Rolling mutilated and posed the women's bodies. Rolling was tried in 2004 and pled guilty to all charges. He was executed in 2006. This episode contains trial testimony from Lillian "Bunnie" Mills, a self-styled country and western music producer, who was Rolling's girlfriend from 1988 until 1989, and helped him with his prospective career as a country music and gospel singer. She also took him for counseling and tried to help with his anxiety and restlessness. Lillian's testimony is followed by that of Paul Schwartz, a longtime friend of Rolling's third victim Christa Hoyt, 18, a student and dispatcher with the county sheriff's office. On August 27, 1990, Christa failed to show up for work, and deputies were dispatched to her residence. Her landlord, Elbert Hoover, takes the stand next and describes how he noticed that someone had broken the fence leading to the back of Christa's apartment. At the end of his testimony, he breaks down in grief.
In the summer of 1990 the city of Gainesville was terrorized by a serial killer who targeted college students.
