Year 2023 marked 120 years of the Lazarus Jewish Hospital in Lviv (Lwów/Lemberg). This richly illustrated book is a tribute to its place in the once-vibrant Jewish community of the city and in the society at large during the period 1903-1939. Visionaries from Lviv: The Story of a Jewish Hospital (Academic Studies Press, 2024) presents the hospital's history and its fascinating architecture, its doctors, and its founder, a prominent local Jewish philanthropist Maurycy Lazarus, with the background of the Jewish life in Lviv. The volume also details the history of medicine and medical education in Habsburg Galicia prior to the hospital's founding, Jewish access to the medical profession, and the impact of Jewish doctors on the path to modernity. It also shows the struggle of women to become doctors. A moving and timely book with contributions from leading historians, scholars, and medical professionals, Visionaries from Lviv is an ode to the once thriving Jewish community in Lviv and a testament to how one person's dream and commitment can impact the lives of so many. Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we will be focusing on a black metal band called Kanonenfieber with their second full-length studio album Die Urkatasthophe. Admittedly I didn't jump on Kanonenfieber for their Menschenmühle debut, and when I did I was blown away. I loved how this band had melodic riffs but still managed to keep the semi-raw sound yet still be catchy. I have grown tired of the obligatory intro tracks for every fucking metal band in existence but I actually kinda like "Grossmachtfantasie" because it just kinda fits. The first single they released for this new record was titled "Panzerhenker" and it completely flew under my radar. But then I listened to it and was thoroughly impressed. I loved the repeating word "Deutschland" in the lyrics, especially since it has triple vocal layering between the lead vocalist and the backing vocals from both guitar players. Another nice touch was the reverse breakdown towards the conclusion of this track where all the instruments temporarily cease from blasting away so the vocal lead can have a whispering segment. "Sturmtrupp" begins with guitar chugging with marching drum beat but you hear an actual war whistle in the background before the song picks up its speed. The entire song is groovy and is undoubtedly a real head bobber. "Der Maulwurf" was the 2nd music video. There's undeniably a rhythm to the melodic sounding chorus that seems like it's being yelled in your face. I love how the song ends with a gun cocking sound followed by a gunshot. The next track "Lviv zu Lemberg" opens with another radio transmission before throwing you head first into the bullet storm that is this band's music. There's a slow break in here but it swings back with a vengeance to roar your ears off. Moving on we have "Waffenbrüder" which was released a while back with a lyrical video that I never got around to seeing. Nothing really stands out much about this one aside from the wonderful guitar melody towards the middle. Nevertheless, it's bad ass much like the rest of this band's work. The next track which is titled "Gott mit der Kavallerie". I love how you hear not just gunfire but war horses too. One complaint that I have about this one is that it seemed longer due to its somewhat repetitious structure. "Panzerhenker" was another one of the earliest singles released for this new album and for good reason. This one fucking rocks! It sounds aggressive and there's even a funeral doomy section halfway through this song where the guitars have a soft whine to them while the vocalist preforms these slow deep growls. Definitely my favorite part. Its cool how "Ritter der Lüfte" opens with the sound of an old bomber airplane engine. I love how you also hear the planes flying overhead periodically during this song. "Verdun" is a short intermission track where you hear a German soldier speaking in his native tongue loud and clear with the faint sounds of bombs being dropped in the distance. All the while there's a somber guitar tone being plucked to help add to the background noise. I won't even try to pronounce the name of this song but its the long A word. "Ausblutungsschlacht" Nothing too outstanding about this one. Its a little lengthy with a five and a half minute runtime. I like the piano at the end of this track. Too bad it's short lived. The final track on this incredible album titled "Als die Waffen kamen" is presented to us in the form of acoustic guitar and clean singing. It may not be considered metal but its certainly a nice little pallet cleanser. This album is definitely an improvement from the debut. I wish they would have done a callback to the machine fire drum beat that was used in the song "Grabenlieder". It would've been so cool if they did that again but for a bit longer. I'm going to give this one a 8.5/10 rating. Support Kanonenfieber by purchasing merch from their Bandcamp page. You can also listen to their music on all streaming platforms.

Pablo's Journey to Business Coaching Pablo shared how he invented the term "business coaching" in 1996 after a significant career change. He had been working as a consultant for large tech companies, but left his job to pursue his life's work after a voice in his head urged him to get busy. His friends suggested he become a coach, which initially didn't interest him, but after realizing he could apply his business experience to help others grow their companies, he started his own coaching business. Over the past 28 years, he has honed his skills to specialize in adding revenues to businesses, avoiding leadership coaching and corporate politics. Maximizing Revenue and Managing Expenses Michael highlighted the importance of managing both revenue and expenses for optimal organizational performance. He emphasized that focusing on revenue generation could lead to cost efficiencies and increased profits, which could also be seen as a form of revenue. He also criticized consultants who delve into too many details, instead advocating for a focused approach to identifying areas of improvement. Pablo agreed with Michael's points, particularly the emphasis on revenue growth. Pursuing Passion for Business Success Pablo and Michael discussed the importance of pursuing one's passion to prevent burnout and achieve business success. Pablo, who transitioned from programming to coaching, emphasized the value of focusing on revenue growth rather than expense-cutting. Michael shared his unsuccessful attempt at becoming a CPA and highlighted the example of John Madden as a successful career changer. They both agreed on the importance of keeping an open mind and being willing to try new things to find one's true calling in life. Furthermore, they touched on the experiences of their family members, discussing the potential of their daughter and cousin becoming coaches. Music, Creativity, and Burnout Prevention Michael and Pablo discussed the significance of music and its ability to evoke different emotions and memories in listeners. Michael shared the story of a friend who created his own successful guitar pedal company, emphasizing the importance of understanding the 'why' behind one's work to prevent burnout. Pablo agreed and shared his personal strategy of incorporating creative activities into his work routine to maintain focus and prevent burnout. Both underscored the importance of enjoying life and pursuing one's passions to prevent burnout and achieve creativity. Connecting With Pablo and Discussing ADHD Pablo, whose website is Lemberg.com, encourages people to connect with him through his blog or contact page. Michael appreciates Pablo's openness and his conversational format that makes listeners feel like they are eavesdropping on a casual chat. Bio: Paul became an entrepreneur at 27. The holy Baal Shem Tov is escorting young Shaul Margolis back to his father in Lemberg shortly after Purim, when they stop at an inn and the Baal Shem Tov asks young Shaul to sing "Shoshanas Yaakov" for the assembled non-Jewish peasants. Before they resume their journey, the Baal Shem Tov introduces Shaul to three young peasant boys about his age. Many years later, the reason for this strange occurrence becomes clear.
(Erstausstrahlung: 26. August 2023)
When Yaakov Avinu left his parent's home, running away from Esav, he made a pledge to Hashem that if Hashem would guard him and take care of all of his needs and bring him back home safely, then he would bring korbanot on a specific מזבח -(altar) that he was setting up then. And indeed, when he came back safely, he fulfilled that pledge. When a person accepts upon himself to do something in avodat Hashem, it gives him great zechut and brings about salvation. The Penei Yehoshua wrote in the introduction of his sefer on Mesechet Berachot that one time he was in his home in Lemberg where he was the rabbi, and, all of a sudden, there were dozens of explosions. Rachmana litzlan , 36 people died, including his daughter, mother and grandmother. He was lying under a huge heap of rubble and was unable to extricate himself. Many people came to try and move the large stones, but nobody could. Seeing that he was in grave danger, the Pnei Yehoshua made a vow to Hashem that if He saved him, he would gather together students and teach them Torah with very deep analysis, getting to the truth of each sugya in Shas. Suddenly, a miracle took place and the rabbi found a way out on his own. He then fulfilled that pledge, plummeting to the depths of every sugya and producing the wondrous work Penei Yehoshua . A man told me, a couple of years ago he lost his job and was having a lot of difficulty finding a new one. In the meantime, the various chesed organizations and yeshivot that he had been accustomed to supporting continued calling him for donations. Each time he extended himself and gave them. His wife told him, “It would make sense for us not to give tzedaka , being that we have no income coming in.” Yet, he kept giving, albeit in smaller increments. One day he received a call asking if he wanted to buy a raffle ticket on behalf of a yeshiva. And then they offered him a greater chance of winning if he would add to his pledge. He agreed and made the donation. His wife once again asked him how he could give when they weren't having any income. And he said, “This is our greatest zechut .” The next day, they called to say he won the prize for $10,000. Fast forward six months, and he still didn't have a job. He went to his rabbi and asked him what he should pledge to do for Hashem as an additional merit to get a job. The rabbi asked him if he had Instagram on his phone. The man said that he did. The rabbi told him to pledge to remove it and never get it back again. The man listened and instantly removed it. The very same day, after waiting nearly a year to find a job, he received a phone call from a company that his wife sent his resume to. It was a long shot that he would even get an interview with this company. And right after he did that heroic act, they called him. And after the meeting, they hired him. He has been at that job this entire year and couldn't be happier there. He then admitted to me that he spent close to six hours a day sometimes on that app and is so happy that he removed it. He now has so much more time and utilizes it for learning Torah and spending it with his family. Yaakov Avinu taught us how to access extra siyata d'Shamaya by taking upon ourselves extra hidurim in our avodat Hashem.
