Ann Souders is a Community Engagement Coordinator for the Mustang Heritage Foundation, a non-profit, educational campaign focusing on raising awareness, providing education, and increasing the placement of wild horses and burros. Established in 2001, the Mustang Heritage Foundation maintains a goal of decreasing the number of wild horses and burros in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) holding facilities, by increasing the number of successful adoptions and placements into private care. The Mustang Heritage Foundation has a few programs to encourage the training and care of wild mustangs, including the Extreme Mustang Makeover, a training competition with a purpose to showcase the beauty, versatility, and trainability of American mustang. A fascinating interview with Amber Espinoza from Isidro Espinoza Horsemanship (Arizona, USA). Amber and Isidro train horses for the public and have a special interest in competing in Extreme Mustang Makeover competitions and Endurance racing. We discuss common problems of taming mustangs, the needs of working with these horses and the lessons they teach. Amber also describes the complexities of the wild horse situation. They share their stories, knowledge and skill via social media and have created a new platform called the "Perpetual Training Toolbox" - because with mustangs you can NEVER stop learning. They have numerous approaches ready to share through their video library, community and monthly Q&A sessions. For this episode, we are sitting down to talk with Melissa Coolich. Melissa was featured in the 2011 Mustang Heritage Foundation documentary " Wild Horse, Wild Ride" where she trained and competed in the Extreme Mustang Makeover, then bought and took home her competition Mustang "Zero" (her first Mustang). We will talk about the challenges that she faced, what drew her to getting a Mustang and some specifics about Zero and what she has done since the challenge.
Craig is a first generation horseman from Cornville, Arizona. He started riding as at thirteen years old and competed in high school and college rodeo. He then went on to work for a couple of horse trainers and found a passion for working with horses and personal development. Craig has successfully competed in roping events, obstacle challenges, and Extreme Mustang Makeover events. He was a 2021 Wildcard for Road To The Horse and while he didn't gain a title from that, he did gain many new fans and friends from the experience. Craig currently lives in May, Texas and trains client horses with his wife Katie. They enjoy training horses and attending competitions. One weekend they might be team roping and the next weekend they might be at a Ranch Horse show or performing a freestyle act with their mustangs. They enjoy helping horses and people as much as they possibly can.
In this episode, Daniel talks with Gerry Cox. Gerry and his wife Kathleen own and operate Mountain House Stables. You've very likely seen one of their coffee mugs floating around. Gerry has lead a very interesting life. As a young man he helped with the Alaskan Pipeline and was an Ice Road Trucker, while living in a small cabin in the mountains. Gerry moved to Washington, with his wife Kathleen, and they founded Mountain House Stables. This wonderful wife of his has allowed this man to have not one, but two places with a roping arena in the front yard. Anyway, Gerry has worked with mustangs, both as a two time top 3 winner of the Extreme Mustang Makeover, and as a consultant for the Border Patrol Project Noble Mustang. A clinician himself, Gerry is always learning and setting his own ego aside. As a part of that, he regularly has other clinicians out to his place to do clinics for him and his customers. These friends of his include Craig Cameron, Jim Anderson, Dan James, and others. Gerry gives a pretty cool interview with several humorous tangents and lots of lessons learned. We hope you enjoy! Learn what you can do in and out of the arena to make sure you are prepared to serve and lead your horse to the utmost ability. Two years ago my journey transformed. I was preparing for my second Extreme Mustang Makeover event and knew I needed to do things differently if I wanted to go deeper with my horse on the relationship level and further in what we could accomplish. I made changes in my day to day life to better serve my horses. These changes not only transformed my horsemanship, they made me feel lighter, less stressed, happier, more present, more prepared, healthier and so much more. The awesome part was they were very simple changes to things I was already doing every day. Over the last two years I've broken down what I've done, how I've done it (and how you can too!), as well as the why- because we all need greater, deeper purpose just like our horses. I'll scratch the surface with you in this video on the things Ive implemented into my life that have enabled me to minimize and even eliminate frustrations between me and my horse, create clarity in our communication and understanding of one another and ultimately create deeper trust and connection. Helping you and your horse achieve these things together is incredibly important to me. My journey with horses started with horses that lacked a lot of trust of humans (in an equine rescue). Therefore I have a deep sense of purpose to help you and your horse build the relationship you desire and can together. So here is my gift to you and you horse. We wrote an entire book on leadership for our horses. It is called 'Be a Leader Worth Following'. You can download the E-Book version totally free! You can download it here: www.coltonwoodshorsemanship.com/e-book Inside of it is an entire guided workbook with the exact things I've implemented in my own life. They've transformed my relationship with myself, my horses, my family and friends and I know they can for you too. If you'd like the printed version of the book, we can ship that straight to you as well. You can order the printed version here: https://www.coltonwoodshorsemanship.com/be-a-leader-worth... Thank you for being on this journey with us and I hope that these videos and book are serving you along your journey! -Colton Woods

After some years doing that he realized how much he missed the horses and the western way of life. He currently lives, works, and runs a training business with his fiancé Katie Ketterhagen in May, Texas. Katie grew up riding and showing Arabians, and started training her own horses in her early teens. She spent two years at the University of Findlay in Ohio, majoring in Western Equestrian Studies. In 2012 she trained her first Mustang for an Extreme Mustang Makeover, and became hooked into the Mustang world. She has since competed in 10 EMM’s and 2 TIP Challenges. TJ Clibborn Horseman, All-Around Trainer, Mustang Makeover Competitor I received an email from listener Mercedes Tucker who told me how much TJ Clibborn helped her with her mustang Bud. She said he was a good guy, knew his stuff, and thought he would make a great guest. She was right. TJ Clibborn has been working with horses for 40 years. He lives in Wisconsin and operating his business called A True Partnership. In 2009, he teamed up with the Mustang Heritage Foundation and since then has competed in 15 Extreme Mustang Makeover training challenges. He has trained 13 top ten finalists, one reserve champion and one grand champion. He has also trained champions in disciplines of jumping, cutting and western pleasure. I caught up with TJ right after he finished with his horses on a snowy morning at his ranch in Deerfield. Sometimes you can get a feel for a trainer by how easy and comfortable they are to talk to. TJ is one of those people generous with both his time and his knowledge. We cover a Wide Variety of Topics With four decades of experience, TJ Clibborn, can talk on any horse topic. We cover the Jeffrey Method, a style of horse training from Australia. TJ saw Kel Jeffrey gentle a horse when he was a boy and knew he wanted to train horses. Most trainers will tell you they learn the most from their most difficult horses. So, I asked TJ about his. He went on at length describing the horse, his problems and things he would do different. Then, we talk about trail trials and training. Lastly, TJ offers a bit of advice for our listeners. What are the top things equine business owners should be doing to grow our business? How do we convert mildly interested non-horsepeople into enthusiastic riders? Wondering if you should move your hobby farm into a working farm, but not sure how to do it? Get a pen and lots of paper to take notes as the legendary Patti Colbert shares the wisdom and insight her marketing clients went on a waiting list to access, but you get free on Because of Horses! An icon in the horse world, a senior leader in some of our most respected organizations, and a wildly successful marketing executive specializing in equine businesses -- few can match Patti's level of expertise and the generosity with which she shares her knowledge. Internationally renowned for her leadership and tireless efforts in developing programs to attract new people and grow the industry, just a few of Patti’s accomplishments include: Extreme Mustang Makeover creator; Senior Director, AQHA Foundation; Executive Director, Mustang Heritage Foundation; board member for the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, American Quarter Horse Association, and the American Stock Horse Association; recipient of the Equine Industry Vision Award; named one of “The Top 15 Westerners to Watch” by American Cowboy magazine — and so much more! In this fascinating episode, Patti details how equestrians can enhance their own horse business by going beyond the over-used reliance on horse-crazy kids and reaching out to newcomers and non-horse people alike — and the importance of connecting within their communities to partner with one another. She also talks about her behind-the-scenes – often hilarious – experiences with the Extreme Mustang Makeover, the TV show “Project Cowboy,” creating the American Horse Council’s “Time to Ride” initiative, and many others. Topics of Discussion: [:19] Elise introduces her guest, Patti Colbert. [1:32] Patti tells the story of how she got started down this path and how her love of horses began. Extreme Mustang Makeovers and the Mustang Heritage Foundation We done a number of shows on mustangs. We talked to Alan Day about his book The Horse Lover. We previewed the documentary about mustangs, Unbranded. And, we spoken with trainers who have successfully worked mustangs like Matt Sheridan. But, I really didn't know too much about mustangs and their plight in the U.S. It was easy to get a hold of the Mustang Heritage Foundation for information. The Mustang Heritage Foundation was formed to foster adoptions of BLM mustangs in holding pens. It is estimated that there are 50,000 horses being cared for by the BLM. I contacted Kyla Hogan, promotion director of the Mustang Heritage Foundation, to get more information about their adoption programs. We also get some great information about the Extreme Mustang Makeover events around the country. The Extreme Mustang Makeover is a wonderful showcase to highlight the great qualities of these amazing horses. Madison Shambaugh Kyla told me about an excellent young trainer, Madison Shambaugh, who had competed successfully at the Virginia Extreme Mustang Makeover. I was able to contact Madison and ask her about her mustang, Terk. Madison also generously shared some of her training and horsemanship tips. These cool hats are donated by KBC Horse Supplies, the source for all your horse’s needs. The Mustang Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the BLM, created the Extreme Mustang Makeover event in order to recognize and highlight the value of Mustangs through a national training competition. The purpose of the Extreme Mustang Makeover is to showcase the beauty, versatility and trainability of the horses that roam freely on public lands throughout the West, where they are protected under Federal law.During competition, trainers are evaluated on the body condition of their American Mustangs, as well as their ability to handle the horse “in hand” through a series of maneuvers including picking up the horse’s feet, maneuvering it through obstacles and loading it into a trailer. Following the “in hand” course, trainers will mount their animals and complete a “horse course” that includes a series of obstacles and requires the trainer to demonstrate the level of competency the horse has accomplished. The finalists compete in a freestyle event. Following the competition, all competing Mustangs are available for adoption.Thank you to Atlantic Horse Carriers for sponsoring the show.
