Oleksiej Zorin is an American Football player and team owner. His family are in Poland under the care of the team he plays for, while he is unable to reach players based in Mariupol, who play on the team he owns, after the city came under heavy attack from Russia. He admits he is scared for the players he can't reach and grateful his team in Poland got his family out of Ukraine. He tells us about the work he is doing to help the people of Kyiv and how he has considered joining the army. Zorin says he doesn't fear death but he does fear for the future. Lowri Norkett joins us in a week which saw her make her debut for Wales and then be selected for their 6 Nations squad. Norkett only took up rugby union after her sister Elli – who was a Wales international – was killed in a car crash five years ago. Lowri tells us about wearing her sisters boots and how she is always with her. The incoming NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman tells us about rebuilding trust between the league and the players following allegations of sexual misconduct against a former coach last year. She also says demand for tickets for Angel City FC's first home game is akin to a Super Bowl and that bringing more new teams into the league is among her top priorities. On this episode, Helen and Maggie are joined by LifeStyled Club member Shauna Muamba. Nearly 10 years ago, Shauna watched her husband, Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba, collapse on the pitch 43 minutes after kick-off in the FA Cup tie between Bolton and Spurs. As the stadium fell silent and medical staff huddled around him, the match was abandoned, Fabrice's heart had stopped beating. Shauna, his fiancée at the time, had to race down to London to be with him.Coming up, Shauna shares with us this traumatic time in her life and supporting Fabrice in his long road to recovery, and how it changed their family. She discusses the financial impact a career-ending injury had on their future, but how an insurance payout eased the blow. Through her own experience, she encourages friends in football to make sure they have a plan in place to protect them. This conversation is a great example of just how much the wives and partners play an important role throughout a players career, not only during times of success but when the unexpected happens too and how it only takes a few seconds to change a whole life and a whole career. Amin. (Dod).

With 27 ODIs and 7 Test matches under his belt, former England cricketer, James Taylor, was an extremely talented batsman and fielder, who was renowned for his work ethic and physical fitness. And it was his exceptional fitness levels that ultimately saved his life, when in 2016, he was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy or ARVC, a life-threatening heart condition, similar to the one sustained by Fabrice Muamba. If it wasn't for James' excellent fitness, it is unlikely that he would have survived. Unfortunately, the condition forced Taylor's retirement and robbed him of more success as an England cricketer. However, prior to the diagnosis in 2016, Taylor had already achieved so much in an England shirt. He scored a 98* versus Australia in a World Cup, and later scored a hundred against the same opposition. He was a big game player, and was always confident that he would perform in high-pressured situations due to the hard-work and preparation he put in off-the-field. Perhaps James' fondest memory on a cricket pitch was actually the two incredible catches he took in Johannesburg during a historic series win against South Africa. Such is the cruel nature of sport, it was just a matter of weeks after the highs of Jo'burg that James received the devastating news that his playing career was over. Not only could James no longer play cricket again, the sport that he loved and had spent most of his life playing, but he could no longer play any sport at all, or any activity that could increase his heart rate whatsoever. For someone who loved competing, training, and staying fit - that was an extremely tough blow. But what's incredible about James is his sheer positivity, and shortly after the diagnosis, he changed his focus from what he couldn't do to what he can do. He is still involved in the game, working as a coach, as a commentator and also as a selector for the England team. In his new role as selector, James was able to contribute to England's World Cup heroics in 2019, and although James is unable to don the England whites any more, it is certain that he will still bring so much positivity to cricket in this country in the years to come.

Our interviewee this time is Fabrice Muamba - who came up through the Arsenal youth system before making his first-team debut as a teenager shortly after the Invincible season. But his career was drastically cut short aged just 23 after he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch, while playing for Bolton in 2011. In this episode Fabrice candidly recounts that incident, and the aftermath, revealing how Thierry Henry, among others in the Arsenal family, gave him valuable support and advice at the time. This episode is in partnership with Camden Town Brewery See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With over 160 Premier League appearances to his name by the age of twenty three, Fabrice Muamba's career was destined for greatness. Learning his trade alongside Wenger's legendary invincible side of the early noughties, the robust midfielder was quickly becoming one of English footballs next great midfield hopes, proven by his astounding thirty three u21 caps. In March 2012 however, it all ended. Muamba suffered cardiac arrest at White Hart Lane and with his heart stopping for 78 minutes, was considered by the masses to be as good as gone. Miraculously, Muamba made a full recovery, but he would never step foot on the pitch again. In Episode 41 of The Michael Anthony Show, the former Bolton man opens up about his rise to the top and his struggles with his helpless fall to premature retirement. Muamba's life proves just as fascinating outside of the game. Arriving in London in 1999 without a word of English, the Zaire born eleven year old dreamed of nothing but survival having escaped the atrocities of a war torn Congo. Now aged 31, the father, coach and University has achieved that and more. Racism in football is also discussed.Follow and Listen to episode 41 of @themichaelanthonyshow on iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud. Whooping cough is on the rise - but the official figures could be the tip of the iceberg, according to one doctor. Retired GP from Nottinghamshire Dr Doug Jenkinson has spent most of his professional life researching the condition which is also known as pertussis. He says that instead of around 1,700 cases every year, there could be tens of thousands. He personally has seen around 700 cases and a blood test available for the last few years has helped to confirm cases. The key to diagnosis is a cough which almost causes choking - sometimes with the characteristic whooping sound - which then subsides for a few hours. The cough can last up to 3 months. The cough can be dangerous for infants under the age of one - who can catch it from parents and grandparents. Dr Jenkinson suggests a vaccine booster could be offered to parents-to-be. Following the recent high profile cases of elite sportspeople collapsing with undiagnosed heart conditions should screening be made available to amateurs? Since the collapse of footballer Fabrice Muamba on the pitch earlier this year the profile of so-called silent heart conditions has risen. Sanjay Sharma is Professor of Cardiology at St George's Hospital - he works closely with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young or CRY - and supports screening. CRY believes that screening will pick up an abnormality in as many as 1 in 300 youngsters - although it freely admits that the vast majority of these would never have gone on to develop a serious problem. And it is the resulting disruption to these children's lives that puts some people off screening, not least because they far outnumber those likely to be saved by the tests. Dr Anne Mackie is the Director of Programmes for the UK National Screening Committee. She says that she wouldn't even opt for screening for her own children Following last week's feature on unfounded rumours that toys were to be banned from GP waiting rooms to reduce the risk of cross infection, an Inside Health listener emailed the programme to ask about the evidence behind products marketed as killing germs on the various surfaces we touch at home. So what's the science behind adding antibacterial agents to household products? Dr Kamran Abbasi, Editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine reveals that there is no evidence to show that products labelled 'antibacterial' reduce the number of infections in the home any more than 'regular' cleaning products. GP Margaret McCartney explains why she thinks the latest campaign to encourage more self-care for minor ailments is wrong to imply that people who consult their doctor about dandruff are wasting NHS resources. The NHS 'Choose Well Summer' campaign says 'self care is the best option if you have a summer health complaint' and it's supported by the National Association for Patient Participation, who say it's all about 'empowering individuals'. The campaign was launched with headlines about the 40,000 visits in a year to GPs which were for dandruff. But what was really behind those consultations? And how good are we at looking after our own health? Computer games are being used to help people recover from strokes and brain injury, thanks to experts in Reading. Products like Microsoft's Xbox Kinect - which can recognise a player's movements - are being adapted by Professor Malcolm Sperrin at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The technology allows patients to select an activity - from dancing to golf or ten pin bowling - and monitor their progress as part of their recovery. The charity Headway - which supports people with brain injury - is using the technology in the community to help people to recover at home.
