We're in a time where we are seeing new voices, new types of voices telling their stories and people create their identity through seeing themselves reflected in work, in all Art, all literature, in any aspect. And if you don't see yourself reflected EVER then think about how that impacts your life and not only in the character, but the narratives in all its ways. And that's why I hope to continue to create not only if I can create it, but foster it in other people. It's April of 2021 and theaters and music venues are already staging a full re-opening. There's news every day about new apps that can help venues and audiences follow health and safety guidelines, and just about everyone you talk to says they have missed seeing live performances more than anything else. But I'll admit, I'm very skeptical about how soon things will return to the way it was, and whether or not people actually want it to. Aside from being a lot more conscious about health and safety, I'm wondering how our tastes have changed, and what kind of stories we'll be open to hearing about, in music lyrics, in movie themes, you name it. My guest in this episode may have a take on this. Joel Bassin, Producing Artistic Director of Firehouse Theatre in Virginia, is a veteran actor and artistic director with a long list of credits, and his theater company was probably the first to re-open back in June of 2020 hosting small private performances, sometimes for only two people. Since re-opening, Joel and the staff of Firehouse Theater, have been in a constant stream of exploration, and to some degree figured out what could work, what audiences were willing to pay for, and how much. Some of these answers will surprise you. I’m Stefan Sittig and welcome to AMERICAN THEATRE ARTISTS ONLINE, where we talk with leading contemporary figures in American Theatre. He is a graduate and faculty member of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Georgetown, and has appeared in productions with many area theatres including Arena Stage, Imagination Stage, Round House Theatre, Washington Stage Guild, Avant Bard Theatre, Rorschach Theatre, 1st Stage, NextStop Theatre Company, Theater Alliance and SCENA Theatre. We're posting a day late because of *reasons* and the episode was going to be a one-two punch of TheatreLab but nope, because *schedules.* We're not complaining, though, because we have two great directors on the show: theater stalwart Melissa Rayford talking about GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES, opening at TheatreLAB on June 4th, and Billy Christopher Maupin interrupted in the midst of putting the final polish on PRELUDES, the musical fantasia that opens TODAY at Firehouse Theatre. Both talk about directing shows that are NOT Godspell, as well as many other fascinating theatery things.
