When it comes to news within the world of geekdom, you know that your bros Jack and Artie have got you covered, and in a week full of lots of awesome news you can totally count on us! We start out by reviewing the new epic series of animated shorts I Am Groot on Disney Plus starring the loveable tree-like baby alien from Guardians of the Galaxy in five new hilarious and intelligent shorts with amazing animation. We also break down the recent announcement of a live action Pac-Man movie based on the classic arcade game, coming soon from the producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Our dad also joins us for Tales From the Dollar Bin, in which he reviews some awesome Steve Ditko classics like his lesser known character from Charlton Static and the comics Ditko did for the American kaiju film Gorgo while Artie reviews a cool issue of Flaming Carrot signed by Bob Burden and Jack reviews the second Batman/Predator crossover.
As our "flop" of summer blockbusters, Mystery Men bombed at the box office, not even surpassing half of their $68 million budget. With a star studded cast, and based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot comic, this movie was highly anticipated in the summer of '99. While first time director Kinka Usher showed glimpses of a great concept, ultimately the film fell short of budgets and expectations. Let's host a backyard pool party, hold superhero interviews on a foldable table, team-build on the Tony Robbins fire walk, and take our unique talents of silverware hurling, bowling, shoveling, deadly flatulence, and incompetent invisibility to save the city from the interim Captain of the Black Pearl... I mean Casanova Frankenstein. Please share with a friend, leave a review, and let us know what you think!

[School of Movies 2020] As we languish in the ellipses between Phases 3 and 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Batman goes on hold, Superman hangs in the balance, Wonder Woman waits for her delayed sequel release, and the X-Men are quietly reshaped by Disney's Fungineers, and the only big bit of news for this breakdown in the age of superheroes is the Snyder Cut finally getting a chance to be put together. So tonight, we here at School of Movies remember the other guys (not the movie with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell) the losers (not the movie with Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans) the outsiders (not the movie with Matt Dillon and the Karate Kid), the wannabe vigilantes who just end up making things worse (not Watchmen). Adapted from the Flaming Carrot comics, but not actually featuring the Flaming Carrot, this movie is almost entirely inept, shambolic, misjudged and ridiculous. Wholly appropriate, considering who it's about; a cadre of buffoons who want to help people in a city of the delusional, where the appointed good guys are actually kind of self-aggrandizing idiots too. Mystery Men has all the makings of a cult favourite, beloved by its fans (including us), and here you'll find out why. This episode was commissioned by Jamas Enright. It's Mystery Men!A good movie to end our 90s odyssey on with a stellar cast and some pretty good jokes. For those of you keeping up with the release schedule (god bless each and every one of you), this is a good Christmas movie if you're looking for something different to watch. Even Madge thought it was alright and she hates everything.Plus!Kris delves once again into the history of comic books and where the Mystery Men originate from. It's a pretty surprising source to be honest and one that's definitely worth a glimpse if you get the chance. Also!Did you know that this is the movie that Smashmouth's "All Star" was originally associated with? You heard right. Whilst Shrek was still being voiced by Chris Farley, Smashmouth were shooting a music video with Stiller and co. Did you know Mystery Men was based on a comic book? And they weren't even the main characters! We read some Flaming Carrot comics and discover the origins of the Mystery Men and see how it stacks up with the movie.
For this week's Kickstarter show, Derek talks Rickman about his current campaign Sock: The Comic Book. It's the (largely) wordless story of an unlikely hero displaced from his companion in the laundromat, and going at it on his own as a crimefighter. Sockwill be a 32-page black-and-white comic book, one that will be appropriate for all ages. Rickman describes the origins of Sockthis way: The idea came to me during the 1999 San Diego Comic Con while at the pool with friends after a day at the show. The conversation turned toward the weirdest comic characters we knew. Flaming Carrot, The Tick, Ed the Happy Clown, Reid Fleming: World's Toughest Milkman, Sam and Max: Freelance Police, were all tossed about. The question was asked: what would be the wackiest thing to make into a comic? As my feet dangled in the water I glanced toward my shoes and saw my socks. I reached for my sketchbook (always next to me) and "SOCK" was born. Offbeat, wacky, wordless, all-ages, lost laundry...what's not to like? Be sure to check out Sock: The Comic Book, and see exactly what happens when yoursocks go missing. Sample Art

Kevin and Kornflake are full of excuses this week, because somebody decided "excuses" should be the subject of this week's Top 4 1/2 List. (We won't name any names, except for the name "Kornflake.") Some of our favorite excuses come from Steve Martin, Marcia Brady, the Blues Brothers, the Kids in the Hall, and of course, Juan Epstein. And these days, with the right excuse, you can even bring a turkey on an airplane! (Several listeners brought this wonderful story to our attention. It turns out that Mr. Carlson was right, and turkeys CAN fly.) Also: It's National Carrot Cake Day, and Kornflake learns about her new favorite superhero, Flaming Carrot, just in time.

For decades masked heroes have taken the law into their own hands – but only on comic pages. However, in recent times the lines between fiction and reality have blurred, and indeed a few courageous souls have heeded the call to action. The Real Life Superhero Movement is a very real thing. All over North America, people are putting on costumes and fighting for what’s right. Some fight for social causes and some do in fact fight crime like their comic book counterparts. Nerdy Show listeners asked us to tackle the topic of “Real Life Superheroes and Vigilantes”, and tackle it we did. There’s an important distinction between the two. We speak with two Real Life Heroes who take the fight to the streets, the infamous Phoenix Jones of Seattle and one of the founders of the scene, Orlando’s own Master Legend as well as two members of the Skiffytown League of Heroes, and the surly Pittsburgh Batman. We also interview comics legend, Bob Burden – creator of Flaming Carrot and Mysterymen – the man who founded the concept of the blue-collar superhero! Join Cap, Hex, Brandon, and Jon as we look at heroes and vigilantes through history and ponder what gear we’d suit up with out on patrol.
