We're looking back at the comic book scene of forty years ago, and we've brought in a special guest to help: ESO Network Director (and longtime comic book fan) Mike Faber. The big story of 1985 was Crisis on Infinite Earths, but we cover much more, including: The New Teen Titans, Justice League Detroit, the trial of the Flash, Elvira's House of Mystery, Secret Wars II, Heroes for Hope, the silliness of Ambush Bug, the genius of Alan Moore (Swamp Thing, Miracleman), and the independent stuff too (Love and Rockets, Cerebus, DNAgents, Jon Sable Freelance, and those crazy Ninja Turtles). This podcast should be bagged, boarded, graded, slabbed, and thrown on eBay with a Buy It Now price of zero dollars. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! It's time to return to the dollar bins! This felt like a week where we needed a fun topic, so Jessika went with "Heroes Being Goofy Goobers." Mike picked up Action Comics 560 for some Ambush Bug silliness, while Jessika went with Garth Ennis's absurd All Star Section Eight. ----more---- For the transcript of this episode, head over to https://www.tencenttakes.com/transcripts. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.)

It's a Christmas comic! It's a Keith Giffen comic! It's very wacky! So what did we think of this 1985 one-shot?
We begin our examination of acclaimed comics writer/artist Keith Giffen. Perhaps most famous as a co-creator of the 1980s run of Justice League (the "B players" era), Giffen also either created or massively influenced: Lobo, Legion of Super Heroes, Rocket Raccoon (and kinda sorta Guardians of the Galaxy), the modern Blue Beetle and much more. This episode, we're looking at Ambush Bug. Specifically a 4 issue mini series that came out in 1985. The Bug knew he was in a comic, made very inside baseball references to the comics industry, and was a hit with the young Milksops. Ambush Bug stories aren't just funny, they are ambitious comics that jump around different genres, skip around in time and space, refuse to hold the reader's hand --- all the while being genuinely funny. The Bug brought out the maverick in Giffen, and this mini series is a genuine joy. Email us at screwitcomics@gmail.com
Our monthlong celebration of Xmas-themed comics continues with a tribute episode to the late great writer/illustrator Keith Giffen, who passed away in October 2023 at the too-young age of 70. Keith's career touched every corner of superhero comicdom, most notably the longrunning Justice League International series he co-created with J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire. In the first half of this episode, we'll be taking a long, chaotic, tangent-filled look at Keith's character Ambush Bug, culminating in the AMBUSH BUG STOCKING STUFFER xmas one-shot released December 1985. Brace yourself! Then, we'll dive into holiday hijinks with The Main Man himself, Lobo! Keith's most xtreme creation accepts a bounty hunter contract on Santa Claus himself in THE LOBO PARAMILITARY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL from December 1991, before facing the metatextual and literal fallout of that battle in THE AUTHORITY VS LOBO: JINGLE HELL, released December 2003. Rest in peace, Keith Giffen! Thanks for the decades of awesome comics.

A comic legend has passed away. Jon and Elliott discuss how Keith Giffen' dark art style and quirky sense of humor made him the backbone of DC comics for a generation, from Legion of Superheroes and Ambush Bug to Justice League International and 52 (not to mention creating Lobo). Plus, the return of Frasier Crane, why Loki is the new Doctor and how to let Batman back into your life. [Ep353]

Our hosting switcheroo continues as Joe helms a full analysis and fix of 2016's Assassin's Creed, Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender's attempt to adapt the hit video game franchise to the silver screen. It didn't win any Razzies, but Jack got to do Caligula. In this 1st part, we breakdown what did and didn't work about the film, explore the connections between the film and games and briefly look into the series' history, and look into what some critics had to say. Jack laments his lack of virtual parkour skills, Joe gives a scattered overview of the games, and take a moment to laugh about cringeworthy presidential announcements. The Business Year (Second Quarter - 1985) ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun 1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. We select some of our favourite super persons and then try to murder them with extreme prejudice. Take that Ambush Bug. DISCLAIMER: Ambush Bug may not be discussed. Sorry.
Superman meets the New Doom Patrol and battle Ambush Bus in his first appearance. This is a funny, action packed, wonderfully written, stunningly drawn tale. I could not love this comic more. ...... Ambush Bug made me say all that ..HELP!

This week we discuss the oddball DC character known as Ambush Bug! Created by artist Keith Giffen in 1982, Ambush Bug was intentionally a silly character Ambush Bug 4 issue limited series published in 1985 Written and illustrated by Keith Giffen. Created by artist Keith Giffen as an intentionally silly character, Ambush Bug first appeared in DC Comics Presents #52 (Dec. 1982)[2] and would make appearances in several other Superman-related comic books in the early 1980s. Paul Kupperberg, who wrote Ambush Bug's first story, recalled, "as Keith was in the office, he sat in on the plotting and offered up Ambush Bug as an antagonist. The Bug is entirely Keith's creation ..."[3] Giffen has stated that both Ambush Bug and Lobo were derived from Lunatik, a character he created in high school.[4] Giffen said that his original pitch was "Bugs Bunny as a super-villain".[5] Follow our Hosts Rich Davis Former co-host of the clowns of cosplay podcast & Cesar Romero enthusiast https://www.facebook.com/bagelbar https://www.instagram.com/velvetjoker2021/ Drew Mollo https://www.facebook.com/drew.mollo/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/drew-mollo https://screenrant.com/author/drew-mollo https://www.instagram.com/ghostbusterman1984 Leo Pond Owner and Producer of The Dorkening Podcast Network https://www.facebook.com/leopond https://www.instagram.com/leo.pond/ Produced by: The Dorkening Podcast Network https://TheDorkening.com Facebook.com/TheDorkening Youtube.com/TheDorkening Twitter.com/TheDorkening Instagram.com/TheDorkening Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/splash-pages-the-comic-book-cl/b9839907-2e32-4595-8d7b-6fd9401417e8 This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

This episode is an interview with author Mike Vago with new comedy from Shawn Carter. Vago is a talented writer and humor columnist. You may have seen his Wiki Wormhole feature, which has run for the past five years in the Onion's A.V. Club. Or you might have seen his debut novel, Selfdestructible, about super heroes who have to deal with real-world problems. A teenager discovers he can set things on fire when he's angry, and the part he's most excited about, at least at first, is that he gets to be homeschooled and doesn't have to deal with the other mean kids. A twenty-something has super powers, but it's debatable that she's a super hero. Her parents were definitely celebrated super heroes and protectors, but they're dead now, and when she goes on a bender to drown her sorrows, she finds she has to move back home to Buffalo to avoid the tabloids. It's not a winking satire, although there is a strong sense of humor influenced by comics like The Tick and Ambush Bug. Vago explores these fantastical things with a more practical eye – what would it be like it people actually had these kinds of powers, and what would they do with them? If you like super heroes and comic books, if you're interested in self-publishing, of Vago's column, or even why I yell “Neil Young!” to end every episode, then this is the episode for you. I should also disclose here that I've known Vago for more than twenty years. We met at the University at Buffalo, both of us working at the campus radio station and magazine. He's the one who introduced me to The Tick, for which I am eternally grateful. So this is also a conversation between old friends. From an amiable author to an amiable comedian, Shawn Carter. Carter is Boston comedian, and I've enjoyed his work for the past several years here. He's got a new album, 100 Problems, which you can find on your iTunes and such. Carter is a clever joke writer. On this track, “97 Cats,” he will challenge your deeply held notions that anyone can own “outdoor cats” and what makes good bird feeder food. You can find out more about him at www.cartercomedy.com and his Twitter handle is @shawncarters.
