This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Alan Rozenshtein, Eric Columbus, and Molly Roberts for a deep dive into two of the week's big national security news stories:“Slipping Down the Slope.” Last week's killing of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has triggered what increasingly appears to be a national backlash against the Trump administration's immigration policies and ICE's violent tactics. Republicans and Democrats alike have been increasingly public in their criticism of the administration's actions—and, in particular, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem—while state officials have begun exploring more legal avenues for pushing back against federal officials. The Trump administration, meanwhile, may be shifting tack, as it has replaced Border Patrol commander-at-large Greg Bovino with immigration czar Tom Homan on the ground in Minneapolis and adopted a more conciliatory tone. Is this a real turning point for the Trump administration's flagship policy? Or more of a feint?“Now We're Just Waiting on Artificial Strength, Dexterity, Wisdom, and Charisma.” Last week, the artificial intelligence company Anthropic released what it's calling a “constitution” for its premier AI model, Claude. The constitution seeks to instill a moral framework, value system, and even a personality in the AI model, taking an unprecedented step in both private AI governance and AI personhood. How does Claude's constitution factor into broader discussions about AI development and regulating how models should interact with users? In object lessons, Eric sticks to classic Rational Security orthodoxy by recommending an actual, physical object: his wife's beloved migraine-slaying device, The Tingler. Alan flagrantly violates the show's informal norms with a repeat recommendation—season 2 of The Night Manager (plus some unsolicited fawning over Tom Hiddleston). Scott, desperate for warmth, throws the rulebook into the fire with a double object lesson: 1) Metro's Fire Snake to satisfy your basic human need for fire, and 2) long underwear to satisfy your base-layer needs. And Molly restores order with a hat that truly captures how we're all feeling: America is in trouble, and we're tired. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. This week, Scott sat down with co-host emeritus Shane Harris and Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower and Loren Voss to talk through yet another big week in national security, including:“Minnesota N(ICE).” Amidst ongoing tensions over the Trump administration's hyper aggressive immigration enforcement tactics in Minnesota, the Justice Department has issued subpoenas to at least five state Democratic officials—including Governor Tim Walz—investigating alleged efforts to obstruct or not cooperate with federal efforts. Some say it's an intimidation tactic; to others, it seems to be laying the foundation for an invocation of the Insurrection Act. What should we make of these most recent developments in Minnesota?“Fed Up.” Last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced in a video that the Federal Reserve had received subpoenas from the Department of Justice as part of a criminal inquiry into his congressional testimony regarding cost overruns in the ongoing renovation of the Federal Reserve's headquarters. Powell called out the probe as an effort to undermine the Fed's independence, and both markets and members of Congress have had a negative response. And the Supreme Court may follow, as it's set to hear oral arguments in the related case of Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook, whom Trump had previously sought to fire “for cause” on the basis of similarly unproven criminal allegations. Why did the Trump administration take this step when it did? And how might it affect the outcome of the Cook case?“The Sound and the Fury.” Recent media reports have revealed that the Department of Defense has spent at least a year testing a device that may have been the source of a mysterious illness that has affected U.S. diplomats and personnel stationed around the world since 2016. This revelation has inevitably called into question past intelligence community assessments that such symptoms were unlikely to be the result of actions by a hostile adversary and resurrected controversies around how affected U.S. personnel have been treated. What should we now make of the so-called Havana Syndrome? And how might these new revelations affect U.S. foreign relations? In object lessons, Anna is channeling her inner British spy with a recommendation of season 2 of The Night Manager. Loren is channeling some inner peace with a recommendation of the Snoo. Scott is changing the channel to the bizarre French animated comedy Grizzy & the Lemmings. When The Night Manager aired in 2016, it was an instant success. Based on the 1993 John le Carré novel of the same name, the series centered on former British soldier Jonathan Pine. In the show, Pine is recruited by MI6 to infiltrate the secret network of a notorious arms dealer. Ten years later, the series returns, despite the fact le Carré never wrote a sequel before he died. Georgi Banks-Davies, the director of this second season, gives us a behind the scenes look at how the series charts new territory for Pine in the world of espionage.  Subscribe to Sasha's Substack, HUMINT, to get more intelligence stories: https://sashaingber.substack.com/ For more information about the International Spy Museum, visit:  https://www.spymuseum.org/ And if you have feedback or want to hear about a particular topic,  you can reach us by email at spycast@spymuseum.org,  This show is brought to you by N2K Networks, Goat Rodeo, and the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC. New polling commissioned by the charity over the last six months reveals one in three people in problem debt have gone without essentials like food and women are feeling the squeeze more than men, with nearly 40% of those seeking advice being impacted compared to 31% of men. Then Dan drops a bombshell: The Night Manager is so tense he physically struggled to finish it.And that's the hook.Based on John le Carré's novel, The Night Manager is a six-part espionage thriller starring Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, a hotel night manager pulled into a covert operation to bring down international arms dealer Richard Roper (a towering Hugh Laurie). Set against the backdrop of the Arab Spring, it's a story of guilt, infiltration, and moral compromise — where every smile hides a weapon and every ally might be a leak.We talk about:Why this is one of the most gripping British series of the last decadeHiddleston's transformation into a Bond-adjacent undercover operativeHugh Laurie's chilling reinvention as “the worst man in the world”The mechanics of building a fake identity and earning trust from monstersOlivia Colman's ferocious MI6 handler and the cost of doing “good”The unbearable tension of near-misses, close calls, and cliffhangersJohn le Carré's MI6 roots and why his work still defines spy fictionIt's sleek, paranoid, adult television — the kind where you pause episodes just to steady your nerves. With a new season finally arriving, this is the perfect moment to (re)discover it.If you like espionage with teeth, villains who smile while they ruin lives, and stories where nobody is truly safe, this episode is your invitation to dive in.You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. It's The Pop Culture Professors, and we analyze the first three episodes of The Night Manager, season two. We consider the season as a continuation of Le Carré's narrative, and consider how far the themes of this new iteration of the series match those of Le Carré's wider body of work. We look into the ideologies (and views on ideology) that underpin the series, and consider the extent to which the Pine character, cycling endlessly from one identity to the next, is a hero for our post-truth age. We're tugging on your heartstrings this week as Wells introduces us to Maya, the very cute foster pup who may have found a permanent home in the Adams family… just maybe not at Wells' house. More on that. Brandi joins with freshly washed hair — a rare and celebrated occasion — and opens up about fine-hair problems, greasy recording days, and the humbling return of Pilates. The engagement glow continues too, with a very valid question on the table: why don't men get engagement rings? Hit us up in the DMs and VMs with your hot takes.Wells recaps a chaotic week that included a trip to Phoenix to watch Ole Miss lose (Hotty Toddy forever), and then it's all about Traitors, baby — because this season is FIRE. Nick catches up with Dan Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter to break down the Golden Globe Awards while they are still fresh. They talk through the winners and losers, how the broadcast actually played, and what worked and didn't with host Nikki Glaser. It's a straight-shooting reaction to an awards night that gave everyone plenty to argue about. Dan also weighs in on a few new things worth watching, including the Amazon series The Night Manager, the drama His and Hers starring Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, and Jon Bernthal, and a new documentary centered on Chevy Chase. The reviews are thoughtful and honest, with the kind of context only a longtime critic brings. Things take a sharp turn into chaos when Esmeralda Leon joins in and British bon vivant and game show tormentor Slap Slapply returns. Nick and Esma get thrown into another round of 80s and 90s trivia madness, and the results are as ridiculous and entertaining as you would hope. [Ep 420]

“In Latin America, we have way more than violence, we're more than salsa as our music, or food, or culture. It's a pleasure and a responsibility to share it with the world.”BBC presenter Nikki Bedi speaks to Mexican actor Diego Calva about his life and career. Diego Calva first made waves in independent cinema before landing major roles in hit series like Narcos: Mexico and the award-winning Hollywood epic Babylon, where he starred alongside Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. One day, when an actor didn't turn up for a college film he was working on, Diego was asked to step in.Since then he's continued to build an impressive international career and has a starring role in the second series of The Night Manager, the acclaimed television drama based on the book by John le Carré.Diego Calva talks about navigating fame, challenging stereotypes, and the power of telling Latin American stories on the global stage. Hello EICongregation! Welcome to content church! This week we're going into the depths of the discourse so that you don't have to. Charli XCX is getting heat for the quality of her newest Substack essay, Sydney Sweeney seems to be doing a 180 on her recent public attitude, fridges may or may not be sending people into psychosis- and we're breaking it down right here. Also in this episode: Oenone's algorithm has been hijacked by a sharp-jawed looksmaxxer called Clavicular. Confused? We've got you. Looksmaxxing is a subculture that emerged in incel forums and focuses on teaching men and boys how to optimise their appearance through grooming, cosmetic procedures and sometimes extreme lifestyle changes. We discuss the implications of this kind of content as it expands into the mainstream. And finally a woman in America is getting roasted up, down and side to side on the internet after proposing to her boyfriend of 14 years. She said: "I really wanna get married. We've been together for 14 years already. He hasn't proposed....So why not?” The internet replied: BECAUSE WE SAID SO. We discuss her decision to flip the tradition and whether shaming her for getting down on one knee is just another way to police women and tell them if they aren't chosen with a diamond ring then they aren't worthy. We hope you enjoy this episode and if you do- please leave us a rating and a review on your podcast player app. Ciao! Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesThough Disney and Marvel Studios have remained tight-lipped and cagey concerning details around the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, the Internet, and a few reputable trades, have collectively discerned that we apparently “know when the Avengers: Doomsday trailer is coming.” The prognosticators have deytermined the trailer will be attached to December's Avatar: Fire & Ash – big news, if true! Another unconfirmed, but believable rumor that has taken the Internet by storm concerns Marvel TV's Wonder Man series and its episode run times, which places the longest episode at 34 minutes and the shortest at 23 including credits. Per The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios has greenlit a Superman spinoff series focusing on standout Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen and coming to us from Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the creators of Netflix's award-winning mockumentary American Vandal. The series is said to focus on Olsen and other Daily Planet reporters, (though Lois Lane and Clark Kent were conspicuously excluded,) as he tackles cases involving superpowered villains, with Season One featuring Flash rogue Gorilla Grodd as a big bad. Predator Badlands was the apex, ahem, predator at the box office last weekend debuting to $40 million domestically and doubling the haul internationally at $80 million worldwide. The film outperformed expectations, representing a much-needed shot of adrenaline in what has been a lethargic Fall box office, while also putting up bests for the franchise; beating out 2004's Alien Vs Predator and 2018's The Predator in the domestic and global arenas, respectively.Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña has been cast in season 3 of Netflix's One Piece and will play the character Portgas D. Ace.Jennifer Lawrence recently revealed that she and Emma Stone are developing a movie about the iconic Muppet Miss Piggy with Oh, Mary! writer and Tony winner Cole Escola penning the script, marking the character's first solo outing siynce Jim Henson debuted her on The Muppet Show in 1976.Netflix and Sony have finalized a deal for another “KPop Demon Hunters” movie, with plans to release the animated musical sequel in 2029.Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' starring Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the late pop icon. The film from director Antoine Fuqua is set to hit theaters on April 24, 2026, after its release was delayed several times.Prime Video announced that season two of The Night Manager, starring Tom Hiddleston, will premiere on January 11. The second season comes back to Prime ten years after the first season debuted. Warner Brothers has set a release date for the next film in The Gremlins franchise of November 19th 2027. Steven Spielberg is returning to executive produce “Gremlins 3” while “Harry Potter” filmmaker Chris Columbus is set to direct and produce. Disney has released the first official trailer for season 2 of Percy Jackson and The Olympians, which begins streaming on December 10th. In gaming news, Skydance Games is once again pushing the release for the much-anticipated “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” video game from May 2026 to November 2026. Rockstar Games also announced that they would be delaying Grand Theft Auto 6 once again, this time from May 2026 to November 2026 as well. Ryan Reynolds and Amazon MGM have teamed up to develop a remake of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, a 1974 action comedy that starred Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges. Reynolds is eyeing to star in the adaptation and is also collaborating on the script with writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, a writing team who worked on season four of comedic crime show Fargo. Shane Reid, who edited Reynolds' Deadpool & Wolverine, will make his directorial debut with the project.
