The Long and Winding Road. In this episode, we answer another listener's question about civil disobedience, understanding the tension for old Adam that's inherent within the two kingdoms doctrine, and we go down a bunch of alleyways picking through conspiracies, immigration, war, colonialism, and ice cream coveting. They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ---- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. WARREN CUMMINGS joins me to talk about the TV adaptations of the work of JOHN LE CARRÉ First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 8th 2024. For various reasons, recently I've been watching rather a lot of adaptations of the work of the novelist John le Carré, or David Cornwell as his family knew him, mostly, perhaps, because I've started reading his books, partially, of course, because SANDY made reference to him our show about ROCK FOLLIES earlier in the year, and also maybe because several of the adaptations have been made more widely available on the BBC's iPlayer service. Anyway, whatever the mysterious dark truth of those reasons might turn out to be, I've recently watched THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL; THE NIGHT MANAGER; TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY; SMILEY'S PEOPLE and also the film of his 1960s classic THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, and, at time of recording, I'm also about to give A PERFECT SPY a rewatch after several decades. Le Carré's world of spies, counter-spies, mistrust, intrigue, and intense Cold War hostilities entertained us for several decades, and mostly centred around the enigmatic character of GEORGE SMILEY, as perfectly personified in two of the television adaptations of the late 1970s and early 1980s by SIR ALEC GUINNESS, and it is mostly upon those two series, TINKER, TAILOR and SMILEY'S PEOPLE that my conversation with WARREN CUMMINGS over the course of the next slow-burning but hopefully intensely engaging hour will concentrate, but, as long as neither of us turns out to be the Mole, then maybe we'll return to talk about a few of the others on another occasion. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
What is HBO heading into 2025? A major prestige cabler that can attract any talent it wants? An empire in decline? A little bit of both? Series Business writer Manori Ravindran was at the intimate London gathering where HBO chief Casey Bloys revealed plans for a Harry Potter series, and joins Elaine Low and Richard Rushfield to talk the storied brand's changed TV buying mandate, new frugality and if it needs a megahit to restore luster. Speaking of! Manori explains the new trick for selling series and getting them made: international co-productions, the kind of deal used on shows from The Day of the Jackal to The Night Manager. My guest today has a nickname in showbiz circles: he's called ‘Ideal Actor' because of his scene-stealing talent and his ability to get under the skin of what it is to be human. If you've watched Netflix's monster hit, Fool Me Once, or seen Sherwood or Back To Life or The Night Manager or if you've watched the movies Four Lions or Murder Mystery 2, the chances are you will remember his performances. He's a brilliant actor, but he's also, as it happens, a wonderful guest - funny, moving and a deep thinker. He joins me to talk about his acting failures, his failure to work hard at school, an upbringing where he was forced to question the nature of his own identity and his failure to keep things in perspective. Also: karaoke. As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. We'll endeavour to give you advice, wisdom, some laughs and much, much more. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! There's been a flurry of casting news surrounding Marvel Studios movie Thunderbolts this week. Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry star Lewis Pullman has an offer to replace Steven Yuen as Sentry after Yuen exited the project due to scheduling issues. Additionally, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join the film replacing Ayo Edebiri, who is also departing the project due to her schedule. It is also said that audiences can expect to see Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishbourne in the project portraying their respective MCU characters Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. Our pal James Gunn didn't leave us hanging this week with his announcement that Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl. Alcock is best known for playing young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO's House of the Dragon, part of the Game of Thrones universe. The Last of Us has secured their directing talent for season two and it's chock-full of award winners. Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for his work on the final season of HBO's Succession; Kate Herron, who directed the first season of the Marvel Studios series Loki; Stephen Williams, nominated for an Emmy for directing on HBO's Watchmen; and Nina Lopez-Corrado, nominated for an Imagen award for directing on season two of HBO's Perry Mason. Will Mom and Dad ever stop fighting? And by Mom and Dad of course we mean…Marvel and Sony. The studio giants are reportedly unable to see eye-to-eye about the direction Tom Holland's Spider-Man should go in a fourth Spider-man film. Sony is understandably trying to boost their Sonyverse with a crossover event that would include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, but Marvel sees things differently. Marvel desires that Holland's Spider-Man continues with a more grounded approach that is intuitive to the character. Multiple Spider-Man appearances were scrapped from the upcoming Madame Web movie that Sony is putting out. Christopher Nolan's film Tenet will be rereleased in IMAX theaters from February 23 to March 1. The first trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been released. The film will debut on March 21. Tom Hollander, a British actor known for performances in Pride & Prejudice, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The White Lotus, and The Night Manager, spoke on a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers about a time he was mistakenly sent a box office bonus check meant for Tom Holland for his appearance in Avengers films. Hollander said "“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box-office bonus. Not the whole box-office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I'd ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.” A four-issue limited comic series called Darth Vader - Black White & Red will be on sale starting April 25. Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. After a year-long search for Trevor Noah's replacement on The Daily Show, former longtime host Jon Stewart has agreed to return to host the program. Stewart will appear weekly throughout the 2024 US Presidential election. While speaking to ComicBook.com about her Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness, Zoe Saldana said she would be willing to play more superhero roles as long as they didn't require the extensive makeup process used to create her MCU character of Gamora. "If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful." Later this year, Marvel Comics will apply their What If...? concept to the Alien franchise. A five-issue run will be released, following the character Carter Burke and what happened after.

“The goal was to work at a record store and then everybody eventually wanted to work for a label. I envied the label guys and then I went and married one.” If the name Betsy Altomare sounds a bit familiar, there's a reason for that. Back on episode number 33 we interviewed her husband Keith Altomare, who told us how he and Betsy met while she was the Night Manager at Tower Records Sunset in Los Angeles. Today we get to hear Betsy's side of this story. Before signing on at Tower, Betsy previously worked at three LA record stores and a courier service that dealt primarily within the music industry. So when she applied and was hired under Bob Delanoy, Betsy came to the job armed with a lot of knowledge. Working at Store #131 she worked with veterans Joel Abrahmson, Howard Krumholtz, Store Managers Debbie Pollay and later Dennis Lefler. Oh yeah, she also worked with one guy named Axl and one guy named Slash. More on that in the podcast. Betsy tells us about some of her memorable customers including Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Bruce Springsteen and Rick James. Now the owner of a movie theatre in Orgeon, Betsy tells us about some of the similarities and differences between both businesses.

Book Vs. Movie: Touch of Evil The 1956 novel Badge of Evil Vs. the 1958 Film Noir ClassicThe Margos dive right back into one of our favorite genres--film noir! The 1958 Orson Welles's directed film Touch of Evil is based on a 1956 novel by Whit Masteron titled Badge of Evil. The book sold reasonably well at the time, but at the time, the movie was given mixed reviews due to Welles not staying until the final edit process. In 1998, a “re-cut” of the film was based on a 58-page memo Welles had sent to the studio 40 years previously is now considered a modern classic and one of the last true “film noirs” to be released. Whit Masterson was the nom de plume of two writers--Wade Miller and Will Daemer who wrote more than 30 books together (including Kitten With a Whip in 1964!) Their original story is about a man, Rudy Linneker, killed by a dynamite blast at this home. His daughter Tara stands to make $2 million and is engaged to someone her father disapproved of before her death. There are other suspects, including Ernest Farnum, a disgruntled employee who improbably confesses. Detectives Leron McCoy and Hank Quinlan are considered “legends” in Los Angeles for their excellent work, and Assistant District Attorney Mitch Holt is suspicious. The rest of the story is a mish-mash of double-crossing police and families in danger, with several lives and careers ruined while exposing hypocrisy and crime in the L.A. police. Orson Welles was given this project as a B Movie and decided to take apart the story and rebrand it as his vision moving the book action from San Diego to the U.S. & Mexico border. Our protagonist (played by Charlton Heston) was renamed Miguel Vargas and played in “brown face” to serve Welles's theme of racism and American relations with Mexico. 34-year-old pre-Psycho Janet Leigh rounds out the cast as Vargas's new bride, Susan Vargas, pre-Duel Dennis Weaver as the Night Manager, and an array of top-notch character actors played by a multi-racial cast.Stars like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Keenan Wynn, and Marlene Dietrich agreed to work for union pay to help keep on budget. He also is a regular speaker on these issues to individuals and lawyers alike. But more than just a lawyer, John is a thought leader for lawyers who want to run effective and client-centered law practice. His wonderful podcast, Five Star Counsel, which has more than one hundred episodes ask a provocative question question: "What would a law firm built by the founders of Disney, Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and Zappos look like.” In his podcast he draws on interviews and his own expertise in the law and almost three years as a customer service professional as the Night Manager at the Four Seasons in Austin, Texas before law school. In our conversation we discuss his path to law as a college Zoology major and hotel manager, what is unique about a tax and estates practice, the lessons that lawyers should take from high-end experiences like the Four Seasons (and why they not be the lessons they think they should take), knowing and sharing your value as a lawyer when helping clients solve problems, the benefits of a fixed fee practice, techniques for marketing and sales other than having the lowest price product, why his dogs are on the staff page of his website, and more.

Imagine growing up in a little town in New Jersey, sharing Beatles albums with your older sister while your Mom is listening to Frank Sinatra and Herb Albert all the time. You find your place in the world being “the music guy” at school. Fold that into time working at the College radio station and then an entry level job at an upstart indie label called IRS Records where your first day on the job the Go Go's debut album hits #1 on the Album Chart. Later that week the Go Go's play Madison Square Garden. If this sounds at all familiar, then you're most likely this week's guest, Keith Altomare. Keith spent a good amount of time at IRS Records (owned by uber Manager Miles Copeland) in New York City working as the label's College Rep. His efforts helped propel REM's “Murmur” to being Number One on the College Radio charts. When IRS opened an office in Chicago, Keith opened up that territory before moving on to Los Angeles working as IRS National Sales Director. It was in the aisles of the Sunset Store where he met his wife Betsy who was then the Night Manager at Tower Records Sunset. In 1989 Keith Altomare moved over to Rhino Records where he started as National Sales Director and then eventually became the VP of Sales working with Tower Records as one of the primary accounts because “They were awesome people who were there because of the music.” Keith also tells us about working with Rhino Records legend Gary Stewart who passed away in 2019. Join us for an informative conversation with a long time friend of Tower Records, Keith Altomare.

In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case will made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis.
