Is It a Bird is a podcast where a couple watch comic book movies. One of them thinks comic books and the movies based on them are pretty great. The other does not.

It's Persepolis! This is a good one. It's not your standard CBM fare but it was based on a comic and by jove does it tick all the right boxes. We both agreed that it's good as well which is a real rarity for us as you'll have heard over many, many episodes. There's so many layers to it too and I highly recommend that you watch it and see what you'll take from it. There's the story of a woman oppressed, there's the questions it raises over religion vs state, there's the East v West elements - all of it inspiring and all of it engaging.Plus! We found ourselves treading over very dangerous ground when reviewing this one. It's hard not to get sucked into global events - especially when some of the nations involved are still at the very forefront of the news. However, we think we managed it, just about. That's not to say that we think we're completely right on any of these issues nor that we aren't willing to be corrected or challenged on an issue. It's literally just our reading on things with the information we have and the experiences that have brought us here. If there's something that you feel we need to know, get in touch. Also! We're a little late getting this one to you and we're sorry for the delay. Basically, we're right in the middle of a house move which is proving to be far more complicated than it needs to be. Seriously, I could start a second podcast on how ridiculous the process of moving house is. Too many greedy gits trying to make sure they get a cut of something I reckon. That and bloody house price inflation. Who could have foreseen capitalism backfiring in such a way. Also, as you'll hear in the episode, we had a slight bereavement recently. Nothing slight about it actually, there was a bereavement and we can't change it in the slightest. Just one of those things though and we're all fine and dandy otherwise. Thanks for your patience. It's really appreciated right now!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g Marjane Satrapi is basically right most of the time about most of the things.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Ghost World!I boldly predicted that there would be a Five Star movie amongst these 2000 movies. Before we watched Ghost World, we hadn't found one yet. Now that we have watched Ghost World, we still haven't found one. It's a shame. I think there's a lot going for this - more than Madge who hated it - but it doesn't quite deliver on the early promise. Oh well. I guess we'll just have to keep watching movies until we find a Five Star Comic Book Movie if such a thing even exists. It's fast becoming our Rosebud.Plus! We take a look at the writers and director. Daniel Clowes wrote the original comic and later the screenplay and Terry Zwigoff co-wrote and directed. Zwigoff is best known for this and Crumb which is a documentary which sounds fantastic. I haven't worked out a way to include a documentary season yet but if/when I do, Crumb is going right on it. We'll definitely be sticking Fritz the Cat on a list - both a watchlist and the sort of list that dirty boys end up on because it was the first ever X-Rated animated feature. That's a fun fact, isn't it Ladies and Gentleman. It paved the way for modern adult-animation but we're not talking about that. We're here to talk about a far less interesting movie. Also! We discuss the conundrum relating to the main characters. They're always heralded as iconic and representative of the teenage experience. However, their voices are coming out of the head of initially one man and later two. Is it still representative if the creators have no idea what it's really like to be a teenage girl? We also ponder whether you'd get away with such a film these days considering how underrepresented female writers and directors still are in the film industry and certainly were at the time.Cheers for your ears.email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g When a movie is 'cult' it means that nobody wanted to see it.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's 30 Days of Night! Our naughties-fest continues with Is It A Bird's first real foray into horror movies/comics. We weren't scared or owt because it's honestly not even that scary. It's one of those ones where it's more about the macabre and violence than trying to leave you sleepless for days on end. To be honest, watching it actually made us so sleepy that we watched it in two parts. '30 Days of Night' actually ended up being more like 'Half a Movie and 8 Hours in a Night'. That isn't to say it's bad though but I can't in good conscious say that it's good either. I actually find it difficult to rate this one because I feel that horror movies are almost a speciality genre and therefore shouldn't necessarily be held up against your average popcorn movies. However, that opinion does seem to fall apart when you consider Alien or IT. Like I said - difficult to rank.Plus! We look at how this movie got made! It was a movie script, then a comic made from a rejected movie script and then a movie adaption of a comic made from a rejected movie script. Like the movie, the comic (in my opinion I stress to add) isn't much to write home about. Having said that though we both really admired the hustle. It seems odd to us that more comics aren't made this way. Just because a script is rejected, doesn't mean the idea isn't solid and comics are arguably the perfect outlet for that big idea. We salute you Steve Niles and all writers like you who are just trying to make it.Also! We look into how IDW was founded. It would have seemed weird to talk about the creation of 30 Days of Night without also looking into IDW as the two seem to almost go hand in hand. It's great knowing that there are comic book companies beyond the Big Two's market saturation and these days it's easier than ever before to access their output thanks to the internet and apps like Comixology - other apps and buying services are available, that just happens to be the one I use. You could of course steal your comics and download the epub files into a reader but that doesn't seem that great when writers, artists and all involved in the publishing of comics put so much effort in. IDW, Dark Horse, Image and all those on the rungs below them deserve support and if you, like me*, aren't in a position to visit a local comic book shop then online is definitely the way to go.Thanks for listening!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g *Seriously, I have extraordinary bad luck when it comes to comic book shops. Even when I move to a different city I find that there's probably one and it's in bad shape due to the lack of custom and pre-orders. I may be the angel of death for local comic book shops and I therefore will never move to New York or LA, just in case I take down the entire industry.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Josie and the Pussycats! It's a cult movie apparently. Not even a typo. People genuinely think this is good in some way. That's churlish. It's not bad really. It's not particularly good but there's a lot of charm to this movie and I can imagine that those who were there at the time watching it, all the way back in 2001, had a real good time. Glory days really. We had no idea what was coming over the course of the next two decades. Arguably, 2001 was where we peaked therefore making Josie and the Pussycats a turning point in human history. Really makes you think, doesn't it.Plus! We look at Archie Comics. Being British and saying things like CHEWSDAY all the time, we are completely uninitiated when it comes to Archie and his many comic book spin offs. It's really all-American and apparently never translated into the UK popular culture knowledge bank. That's despite Archie having a massive hit single and Sabrina the Teenage Witch being hugely popular when it was broadcast on ITV (Saturday tea time I think but that could be my memory playing tricks on me. I remember the cat always looked quite good so I'm now too afraid to go back and have the memory ruined by time). I'll tell you something for nothing though, I'm going to flipping well pick up a run of Archie at some point to see how it suits me. The covers and the art in some of them justify that alone. I'll probably read it while I drink from a bo'ohw'o'wo'er.Also! What's your favourite chocolate bar, chocolate biscuit or regular biscuit. It's Zack Snyder's Justice League! And it's the same movie! It's the same movie but with more stuff left in and a ton of stuff slowed right down so you really feel that four hour viewing time. I find that really arrogant by the way. Why can't you just respect the art of editing?Plus! The order of this episode is switched a bit so Part 2 is really Part 1 and Part 1 is really Part 2. Thankfully we didn't record any additional parts that have no relevance to the rest of the episode and stick it in at the end. Part 1 but really its Part 2 contains a look at how the Snyder Cut movement got going and then snowballed out of control in the ridiculous manner we've all seen on twitter and being dragged behind planes. It's actually pretty interesting but (and this will upset some of the usual suspects) ever so hypocritical. Can't argue with their success though. Also! No Box Office bits because there aren't really numbers to go on yet. No Six Degrees of Madge because its the same movie. If you're desperate go and listen to the Josstice League episode and play along there. Better still, get your whole family around and pick to random movies for them to link. Tell them it's an original concept created by us and then get them to download every episode we've got onto their preferred listening device. That way we'll all be happy. Thanks for listening! It's Josstice League! And it sucks! But you already knew that didn't you. This is not a review of Zack Snyder's Justice League because that hasn't been released yet. This is a review of the version that was completed by Joss Whedon with, I don't doubt, no little interference from studio heads. You can say what you like about Joss Whedon - literally, it seems like he deserves it. You can also say what you like about Warner Bros. - again, seems fair enough. And, you can say that the 2017 version of Justice League is one of the worst movies ever made. On that last point however, you'd be wrong. It's not the worst. It's not anything. It just sort of goes without ever making any sort of mark in your brain. There's no point even getting angry about it.Plus! We do the obvious and track what happened during the production of this movie. Did Snyder leave or was he pushed/fired? Were Warner Bros. right to do this? Did Zack Snyder ever intend to make a lighter toned, more mass appealing movie or was the studio right to intervene during the production. We may or may not answer these questions. I can't remember right now because it's late as I type this. Ultimately, just make your own mind up and we'll agree with whatever you think probably because why argue about something that doesn't really matter anymore, anyway. Also!We do a bit of musing on the philosophy of creativity and who has the right to take ownership of this. There's an argument either way as to who should have held their tongue and done what the other party wanted in this case. On the one hand you've got Zack Snyder who is clearly not making the movie that Warner Bros. are expecting him to. On the other, you have a number of producers and money men sticking their nose into the production and not letting the director complete his vision. Again, make your own mind up but do tweet us at the link below. Thanks for downloading and/or listening! I forgot to put the and/or in during the last notes and I can't see the point in editing it now.email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g Let's face it: It's still going to be a bad movie..Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Wonder Woman!Imagine wanting to watch Captain America: The First Avenger but you hate World War 2 and you're not a fan of world building. If that appeals then this might just be the movie for you. It's a harsh assessment of a movie which is pretty groundbreaking in terms of a female led comic book movies. However, I personally find this a pretty dull affair. On both occasions we have watched this, it's been a struggle to stay awake. I also don't feel like Patty Jenkins is that good with a third act. It's churlish to compare this to MCU movies. It ticks along just fine and the war scenes are pretty alright. The end battle is a tedious CGI fest where she goes Super Saiyan and breaks continuity. Don't even get me started on the ramifications for global history.Plus!Alright! Let's address the restrained elephant in the corner. There's a little bit of sex stuff behind the creation of Wonder Woman. It's a great Part Two where we discuss Wonder Woman's creator and his wives but you have to keep an open mind. It's still oddly viewed in a sort of sneering/tittering/male gaze-y way and I really don't think that should be the case. Especially not these days and if you don't agree I suggest you take a look at your own search history and then have a ruddy good think about your own 'interests'.Also! You're still thinking of the weird sex stuff aren't you. Try to get your mind out of the gutter and listen out for how well this movie performed against the other DCEU offerings. It does tremendously well at the box office and suffers none of the drop off problems that plagued Wonder Woman's male teammates. Thanks for downloading listening!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g The Joker but he's Jesus.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Suicide Squad!"What are we? Some kind of Suicide Squad?" Yes Will Smith, you are. You're a long way from Bel-Air now. You're in a mad gang with Donna off Neighbours and the man from that Spartacus show with all the willys in it. You know what else? It's not bad - and I actually mean that. The first time I saw it, I hated it. This time round, actually thought it was half decent. Maybe it's because we watched it off the back of Man of Steel and BvS, maybe because it's aged better than other Comic Book Movies have managed. Who knows. Either way, we give it a pretty favourable review which shocked us both.Plus! It bombed. Yup. Same as BvS, it opens well then inexplicably drops off a cliff. More explanation in Part 2 after a lovely Batman: TAS clip. The numbers seem very odd and I can't believe that word of mouth was so powerful that it killed the movie, not with this cast. Yet, here we are. Also! It's obviously a mess and there was mucho studio interference throughout the production of this movie. We spend most of Part Two digging into what happened and why there are so many and multiple character introductions. Off the back of this we do the obligatory 'Jared Leto's method madness is madness' chat. I mean, seriously: dead pigs and live rats? There's just no need Jared. Now off you pop back to your mum's make up bag. That Marilyn Manson look won't apply itself. Thanks for downloading listening!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g We live in a society.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice!Set your faces to anger Snyder-Fans because this "film" gets a pasting. Perhaps the speech marks are a little cruel there because there are certainly people in this who "act". I've only gone and done it again haven't I. It's just hard you see because there's very few redeeming aspects of Batman v Superman. The plot doesn't make sense, the reason for conflict is non-existent, the antagonist is completely unthreatening (and may as well not be there) and it is once again, an ugly movie to look at. Other than that, it's barely average.Plus! It bombed. Not really, not on the surface but it did. We usually cover your basic box office stats: worldwide takings vs budget. However, BvS is interesting in that it experiences one of the biggest drop offs in blockbuster history. Not only that, it had a pretty ridiculous marketing budget which skews the takings somewhat. It's covered in more detail in Part 2 but from a pure financial point of view, you can see why the production of Justice League was as troubled as it was. Also!Look, Zack Snyder has misunderstood comics. We go into a bit of detail on The Death of Superman and Dark Knight Returns (which I continually call Dark Knight Rises because obviously) and look at where the movie diverts from their storytelling. This also brings up characters' motivations and the sequence of events that make the comic book storylines engaging and why the movie version misses the point of them. Thanks for listening!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g Countdown to March 18thSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Man of Steel! It's also completely rubbish. We weren't really paid by Marvel to give this movie a bad review. We would gladly do it for free. And we did basically. It's actually some of the most fun we've had recording because this whole movie is so utterly ridiculous and crap from start to finish that you can't help but have a bit of a laugh. We apologise to all of Australia though for our impressions of Russel Crowe and the Space Strayans of Space Straya.Plus!Kris reads out some reviews of this movie from the die-hards to really emphasise what we're dealing with here. The world 'cult' is uttered but whether that's a fair assessment of all this Zack Snyder fawning is up to you. Also! We finally look into comic book that isn't stupid, weird or accidentally funny. Superman Red Son is genuinely a brilliant bit of story telling and possibly the best Elseworlds Superman story produced to date. You should absolutely go out of your way to read it and if Warner Bros. are listening, you should absolutely make a mini-series about it.Thanks for listening!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g 46Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/isitabird)
It's Into The Spider-Verse!And it's very, very good. You already know that though because how could you not, right? I will go on about this at length in the episode but when I first saw this movie, it blew my mind. Visually, it's like nothing else I'd ever seen. As Madge points out, it looks like a comic come to life but it doesn't look cheap or hackneyed. Very interested to see what they do with the sequel to this one but it's Sony so... you know...Plus!We tell you all about the characters from the movie and their super secret origins. As an added bonus, you'll find out who's first appearance is worth the most. It's pretty obvious to be honest, especially when you take Peter Parker out of the mix. What was more surprising was which issues aren't worth that much. Also! The Six Degrees of Madge continues and this episode sees us try to link Into The Spider-Verse back to 1995's Judge Dredd. We do it pretty quickly but if you can do it quicker or better (without cheating and looking it up on wikipedia) let us know. It's The Amazing Spider-Man 2!And it's bad! There was a point where I was watching it and I thought to myself: "how come I thought this was bad? So far it seems pretty good..." But, then the bit with his parents started and I remembered exactly why I thought it was bad. Because it is bad. So bad. I really feel for Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone to be honest.Plus!Did you know that Gwen Stacy dies at the end of this film? Well she does and if you're reading this before you've watched it I really have to question what you're doing here and strongly advise you to take my word for it that it's bad and Gwen dies at the end. But, did you know that she also had a pretty infamous death in comics? It's actually a pretty big moment in comics and I also advise you to listen to Part 2 to hear all about it.Also! We do a game like the six degrees of Kevin Bacon but not that but like that. It's The Amazing Spider-Man!Maybe it's more average than 'Amazing' but it's better than Spider-Man 3, in fairness. Madge actually rates it above every Spider-nerd's favourite: Spider-Man 2. It's not that she's looking for the controversial take, she just doesn't care about your feelings or opinions. That's what she says, anyway. It does sometimes look like she's enjoying saying it.Plus!Have you ever heard of the 'Clone Saga'? Of course you have but did you know it was awful? Of course you did but do you know the whole rotten story? Of course you don't. You're far too intelligent to have put yourself through it. Worry not though faithful listener. I have boiled down the entire story for your entertainment. Now you never have to.Also!Could Else from Frozen take on the whole Marvel Universe in a fight? It's Spider-Man 3!And it is the worst! Gonna cry? Why yes I am Tobey. I'm going to cry if I ever have to watch this repulsive movie again. Perhaps I'm going overboard but the flag! and the dancing! but especially the flag! They do MJ dirty in this too. She's reduced to a shell of the screaming kidnap victim she was in the first two movies. Now she's a screaming kidnap victim *and* a nag.Plus! We investigate why Spider-Man 4 didn't happen and why Sony decided to reboot the franchise instead. Spoiler, it's because of lots and lots of glorious American Dollars. Also!We often enjoy looking back at the movies that were popular in a particular year but 2007 was truly awful. It's Spider-Man 2!Look. It's fine. At the time it was probably the best comic book movie made to that point. It's just that since its release we've had a number of better movies. But, you've got to start somewhere so I guess in many ways, this movie is the grandfather of all modern comic book movies and for that it deserves great praise. However, not everything has aged like a fine wine and Tobey Maguire is still a terrible Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Lucky all of us for getting to maybe see him back in the role soon though, right?Plus! We take a look into the complex and often ridiculous history of one Doctor Otto Octavius. Their's re-births, deaths and marriages in this quick once over of Doc Ock's various shenanigans. Basically, Madge doesn't know anything about the Spider-Verse and we're going to be watching Into the Spider-Verse last in this series so I'm laying the groundwork for it all to make sense but it's a secret and she doesn't know I'm doing it.Also!Tobey still seems to be one of the worst humans at this point in time. We hear all about his posse and his poker. I'm sure he's fine now. Unless he's not but that's none of my business. All I'll say is that I don't think Leonardo DiCaprio would hang around with someone who was actually terrible. I don't know. It's Spider-Man!And what a disappointment it is. That won't be a popular opinion and neither will some of the things we say during the episode. However, it looks terrible, the dialogue is terrible and its poorly acted so we're completely justified in our assertions. That's all Part 1 which we had to record twice because the audio was lost. Shame that too because there was some good stuff in there and real enthusiasm which you'll now miss out on.Plus! Was one of Spider-Man's creators denied royalties from these tremendously successful movies or was he just lying because he revels in his own misery? It's not for us to say but you can hear that story and also what inspired the webslinger's creation in Part 2.Also!How much would it cost to get Joe Manganiello to punch Tobey Maguire in the face? It's The Rocketeer!Quite literally one of the best movies we've watched. Kris boldly proclaimed some weeks ago that this is one of his favourite movies and for once he was not made to look stupid. Not by the movie anyway. The things he says on this podcast are still very much his own words and you, dear listener, can be the judge.Plus! We look into some alternate casting choices, how the movie differs from the comic and how Disney messed up with the promotion of the movie. It's Buck Rodgers! And you will not find a single reference to that Feeder song anywhere in this episode. That's a good thing too because the movie/tv pilot/first two episodes of the first season are and is a good time. We both enjoy this one and heartily recommend that you seek it out. There's robots, boobies, spaceships and ray guns. What's not to like?Plus! We take a look at how Buck was such a hit in the UK that he kicked off the slow decline towards the cancellation of Doctor Who. Buck Rodgers is therefore the greatest man out of time on TV. However, we also cover the fact that Buck Rogers as a series massively declines in quality almost immediately. Watch it though because I promise it's good. Also!Buck Rogers may be a fading icon now but it was once so popular that it basically invented sci-fi comics and all modern toy licensing. It's Dick Tracy!I'm so sorry but I have nothing nice to say about this movie. Madge was slightly more positive but that's only because it stars Madonna who is one of her favourite all time people. I can see why because Madonna is actually good in this and outshines some serious acting talent - Al Pacino for example who is hitting at least an eleven on the 'shouting instead of acting' scale.Plus!Have you ever wondered why there wasn't another Dick Tracy movie? The original made money so why not? How about a CSI style show with Dick in the lead role. They're pretty popular these days so why are we not getting enough Dick? Well I'll tell you: Warren Beatty owns the rights and was for years involved in a lawsuit to retain them. He won, obviously because he's an old white man, and is still intent upon making another Dick Tracy movie. Also!Who created Dick Tracy and what does Little Orphan Annie have to do with Dick? How about how Dick Tracy invented the mobile phone? It's The Phantom! This movie exists in the sweet spot of not being bad, bordering on fun but being completely and utterly forgettable. I genuinely can't even remember which movie we're talking about now. I can, of course. It's 1996's The Phantom.Plus!Someone apparently wrote a script - AS A JOKE - that wasn't meant to be made with a bad ending. Allegedly, most of that is in this movie. Listen to find out our thoughts on it. Particularly Madge's because she didn't know this clever fact going on in and deduces that there's something not right with the dialogue. Again, there's a lot to like including the performances. There's just something off about the whole thing and the ending is a bit out of nowhere. Worth a watch though and this episode is worth a bloody listen. Also!Did you know that Phantom writer, Lee Falk, basically invented superheroes and how they look? It's true! Forget Superman and Batman and all that. The Phantom and a dear magician friend of his are the ones who deserve the credit. Listen for the full anecdote and an absolute gem of a story about how The Phantom managed to work his way into tribal culture for real! Thanks for listening. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?Kris and Madge do. They also know a terrible movie when they see one and let us tell you, folks: this is a terrible movie. There's barely a single redeeming thing in it so listen to this but probably don't watch it.Plus! They were going to build a franchise off this? Really? It's a stretch, sure, but they really were looking to do it. I think they saw Baldwin's chest merkin in the editing room and decided that it was never going to fail but I have no proof of this. Also! The Shadow did not start out as a comic book character but you will never guess in a million years where he did make his debut! Unless you go look it up on the internet which is very clever of you (we're all impressed) but you could have just listened to Part 2 of this episode and found out the easy way. Thanks for the download. Gordon's Alive! What a movie this is! It's either a two star or a six star and that rating changes from scene to scene. There are parts of this movie that are so dumb that they have to be seen to be believed. There are also parts of it that are great. You also can't believe how good it looks. It's totally unique in modern-ish movies. Please go and just look at the sets.Plus! Was there meant to be a sequel? Was it meant to be directed by an arty Italian type? How does Enter the Dragon play into all this? You will have to go look all of that up yourself won't you. Or just listen. It's easier and more fun if you listen, to be honest. Also! Is Star Wars just a big rip off from professional idea thief, George Lucas? Yes. Yes it absolutely is that. Just go back and look at Flash Gordon comics from the 1930s and 40s and see with your own eyes that even the metal bikini is a different perverted man's idea. I'm starting to wonder if Jar Jar Binks is just an ugly Lizardman. Thanks as always. Hope you have a good week, month, year and life.email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Superman Returns! And returned he has. Wow, this was a good movie. We were genuinely surprised by this. I (Kris) had been telling Madge since Superman I that this was a bit of a shocker but the only shocking that took place was to us by how good it was. I (Kris again) make the startling claim that this is the best Superman movie that's ever made. Don't agree? Well then, you'll just have to contact us via one of the links below and share your opinion you little know it all.Plus! Why wasn't there a sequel to this movie? Was there ever meant to be a Superman V? Why the hell are there pictures of Nicolas Cage cosplaying Superman when I type 'sexy' into google? Find out the answers to all of these questions at the end of part one. It's one of the reasons why this episode is so long but it's too good to cut out. If you don't agree, get back to those links and tell us why. Also! We delve into the dreaded Superman Curse. Now, if you follow our socials then you'll know that we have been a victim of the Superman Curse. It's been seriously spooky stuff. We're not at poor George Reeves levels but the moment we got this episode in the can, our bad luck stopped. I'm not even lying. We cover the Curse in detail and hopefully provide you with enough evidence to become a true believer - I do love it when we go all True Crime as well. Thanks again you lovely listener. Hope you enjoy this episode and stick with us for the next one.email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Superman IV!Here we are again and this time we bring you Christopher Reeve's last outing as the Man of Steel: Superman IV. It's a crying shame that this is the end of the line for the man that is so excellent in this role that he's become iconic. The sad part is, you can see him really trying and fighting against the dying light that was this once proud series. God bless the man and everything he was - a planetary treasure.Plus!Did the United Nations relocate to Milton Keynes? Was the Kent's Farm in Hereford all along? Did Cannon Films go super cheap on all of the sets and location shoots? All yes. Also! We learn how Superman was ripped off to create Captain Marvel and then Superman plagiarised Captain Marvel and sued him out of existence. This is a roundabout way of saying that there were some legal shenanigans. We also cover the very sad tale of the great Otto Binder - a man who deserved a far better fate than the one that befell him.Thank you, as always, for downloading. It means an awful lot at the moment as we're still no closer to all living under the same roof again. Doing this gives us a chance to hang out and laugh for a while and we appreciate you joining us. It's Supergirl! We're so happy to be back. Thanks for listening to the Upology. Most of that is still happening but we got it together to bring you Supergirl! Supergirl is a movie that someone made and everyone is trying their best in which should be commended.Plus!Madge gets introduced to Power Girl and her costume. Yup.Also!Supergirl once had an intense relationship with her horse. Really. Kris breaks it down for you and leaves no gaps for your imagination to disgust you with.Thank you for downloading. We know that the world isn't the nicest place for everybody at the moment and just wanted to say that we're with you. We absolutely will not tolerate discrimination of any kind and hope that the voices that need to be heard are listened to. All will be explained in 8 minutes or less. Apologies again but I promise this break will be short.
It's Superman IIIThere's a pretty good movie in this one but its not the one featuring Superman. Unfortunately.Plus! We go all True Crime on everybody's asses with a tale of theft, riches and fraud that has to be heard to be believed. And yes, it involves comics and fantastic actor, Nicolas Cage. Also!Ever wondered what Pink Kryptonite would do to you? Well, nothing because you're probably human. If you were Kryptonian though, look out.Keep up the safety everyone. Sorry for the wait. Kris tried to cut off his own leg at work. He's fine though - physically anyway. Listen to advice and tell all your friends about Is It A Bird. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Superman II - both versions! One of these cuts is an excellent movie, the other is so poor that it should be buried like the Arc of the Covenant and never viewed by human eyes again.Plus! It's part two of the tale of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and how Superman was taken from them. There's tragedy, their betrayal and there's a letter written to put a curse on the Superman movie. Really. Also! We bicker and undermine one another throughout. If that isn't what podcasts are for then I want no part of it.Please stay safe everybody. Listen to advice and tell all your friends about Is It A Bird. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod Instagram: search 'isitabirdpod' and look for the usual logoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g - stuff coming soon. I promise.
It's Superman! And let me tell you: it's an utterly fantastic movie, this one! There's a baby in the room again. He's having a lovely old time but sometimes yelps when you're trying to say something pertinent about the history of comic books or the craft of filmmaking. If it bothers you, please email.Plus!Christopher Reeve completed Superman in the late 70s/early 80s and nobody else should even try. Honestly, Dean Cain aside, there's never been a better Superman on screen. We go into a number of reasons why and are sure you'll agree. Also!Hear the tale of Superman's origins. The villain, turned scientist, turned alien changed the world but the two lovely lads who created him weren't exactly lucky when shopping the Man of Steel around to comic book companies in the thirties. So unlucky in fact that they signed it all away at the first opportunity. Listen to find out more! Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Ant-Man!And before we start I have to apologise for the background noise. We have a two month old and we really haven't figured out a way to record around him yet but I promise you we are working on it and will have it cracked by the time he's five. The movie is pretty good though.Plus!Madge is introduced to the deplorable Hank Pym and his various misdeeds. Just google it and be as disgusted as she is.Also! We explore what went wrong with the making of this movie, why Edgar Wright left and why Madge was reminded of Step Brothers and Eastbound and Down. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Avengers: Age of Ultron! Not the worst Avengers movie apparently. It's a movie we can't work out if we're honest. It's not that good but can it be considered terrible? Compared to some other comic book movies we've watched, certainly not. However, if you compare it to the solo MCU movies, you'd have to concede that it doesn't live up to the standard - particularly not the one set by Guardians of the Galaxy. Wait until you hear Madge's ranking at the start of part 2 though. You may be shocked (you won't).Plus! We explore the origins of Ultron and Vision and also touch on the potentially incestual relationship between Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from certain comic books. Also! We are once again joined by our baby who likes to make himself heard on the recording. I lose as much as I can in the edit but I apologise if the interruptions annoy you. Having said that, if you do think that way: you don't deserve to even know of his existence so shove it up you butt. It's a good show though so tell all of your friends. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Guardians of the Galaxy! Is it the best MCU film? This one probably is actually and you can tell because Madge claims to "quite" like it. She also ranks it fairly highly (by her comic book hating standards) so look out for that towards the beginning of Part 2.Plus!As always we explore the paper page origins of the movie's characters and focus heavily on Drax the Destroyer, simply because his origin is so dumb. Google image search the characters to discover what we're reacting to. Like before, if that doesn't quite work send us a tweet or an email and we'll come up with another solution - links below. Also! We had a baby! We're sorry for the noises he makes on the recording. We've asked him to stop and speak English like a normal person but so far he's refusing. You can get involved and decide his pod-name for us though. Madge is going with Baby Wolverine but Kris isn't super enthused by that one. Help us listeners, you're our only hope. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Captain America: The Winter Soldier!Kris thinks this is very good whilst Madge thinks it is probably just OK. She likes ScarJo though (as always) but controversially finds Cap himself a little dull. Each to their own. Kris just waits for him to take his shirt off and then hits pause.Plus! We also talk through Cap's band of supporting characters including Agent 13, Falcon and Bucky. Please feel free to stick those names into a google image search followed by the word 'comics' and you'll get a good idea of what Madge is reacting to. If that doesn't quite work send us a tweet or an email and we'll come up with another solution - links below. Also!Jetpacks are stupid and only an idiot would try to use one to fly. Never forget that. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Thor: The Dark World! And it is shockingly bad. It's probably the worst MCU film to date and we are not kind to it in our review. It's a shame really, the protagonist was given nothing to work with and it took a minor miracle to bring him back to popularity. Still, he looks good with his shirt off at least.Plus! We talk about the absolute legend, that is Walt Simonson and about what a thoroughly good egg he seems to be. If he were an egg it would undoubtedly be a dinosaur egg because he bloody loves a dinosaur does Walt and we love him. Also!Hear the tragic backstory of Malekith the Accursed - a character who could have been a real heavy hitter in the MCU but was instead given a terrible design and squandered. Read comics though because he's good in those. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Iron Man 3!The much awaited follow up to the first big MCU and it doesn't disappoint! It just doesn't wow either. Probably it just mehs. There's some really weird plot decisions that never quite add up when you factor in the wider MCU. It's fine though but Madge thinks it's bad.Plus!Listen as the MCU's ultimate villain is discussed. It's pretty shocking actually that so many actors, characters and movies were stopped dead by one person's prejudices. Be kind to people and then good things happen - something which has been thankfully proven time and again since 2015.Also!Madge is introduced to MODOK and she has.... thoughts. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Quiz Time! It's a great big quiz covering the four seasons of films we've explored this year including:MCU Phase 1Burton/Schumacher's Batman. Batmen? Batpersons. The first three X-Men movies and Wolverine movies. Some 90s comic book classics. You can revise by listening to them all... if you want?Madge was not happy with some of the questions and answers as you will hear but please don't let that put you off because she genuinely does not care about comic books or movies based upon them.I also have to apologise for the weird feedback sound you can hear. I don't know how it happened or why it's there but it's annoying and you stop noticing it after a minute or two anyway. We're both still really sorry though. It'll never happen again. Thanks as always!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Mystery Men!A good movie to end our 90s odyssey on with a stellar cast and some pretty good jokes. For those of you keeping up with the release schedule (god bless each and every one of you), this is a good Christmas movie if you're looking for something different to watch. Even Madge thought it was alright and she hates everything.Plus!Kris delves once again into the history of comic books and where the Mystery Men originate from. It's a pretty surprising source to be honest and one that's definitely worth a glimpse if you get the chance. Also!Did you know that this is the movie that Smashmouth's "All Star" was originally associated with? You heard right. Whilst Shrek was still being voiced by Chris Farley, Smashmouth were shooting a music video with Stiller and co. Seriously, look it up.Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Judge Dredd!A movie for which the word 'meh' could have been invented. It's not bad but it's not exactly exciting either. I guess if you like you could imagine a boring version of Total Recall or Blade Runner with big gold shoulder pads.Plus! There's a bit of a look into 2000AD - the legendary British comic book and its origins. Also covered in this part is how Judge Dredd came to be and what influenced the dystopian lawman. Basically, you can't really cover one without the other so here you have it.Also! We get sidetracked again. This time it's about UB40 for some reason. If you agree with Kris's opinion on white people making reggae music please let us know via the mediums below. Thanks as always!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Barb Wire! It's another film that's really hard to tell if it was on to something or it's just plain awful. Give it a watch though if you can because some of it is excellent and some of it is funny.Plus! We take a quick look at the comic that inspired this masterpiece of cinema. Is it good? Should you buy it? Listen to find out (no though). Also! We spend too long talking about Shawn Michaels in the 90s. Can you blame us though? Google his Playgirl shoot and tell us we're wrong. Thanks as always!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Spawn!Another story about a man returning from the dead except this time it's far, far duller. It's probably the worst movie we've watched for the podcast so far and that is really saying something considering we watched Catwoman. We get through it together though and we invite you to join us in doing so.Plus! We dip into the history of Image Comics to see what lead to its founding and the impact the company has had since. This inevitably leads to a bit of 90s comic book bashing but, lets be honest here, they deserve it.Also!'Is That A Cape?' returns! Like Spawn, like The Crow and like other poorly conceived character origins, the feature where we assess the superhero styles, the vigilante vogue is back. You've got Spawn, Venom, The Prowler and Nightwatch all given the Joan Rivers treatment this time so stick around. Thanks as always!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's The Crow! And also, we're back from the dead. This is a week late because we were both killed by cold and flu but our dedication to making a podcast about movies one of us could always give or take pulled us back from the brink. True story.Plus! There is of course a comic book that this movie is based on because that's our one rule. That comic book is discussed because that's our other rule. Also! No capes, no 'Is That A Cape?'Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's The Mask!Does Jim Carrey have range? Our hosts can't agree. The movie is pretty good if you ask one of them but you'll have to listen to find out for sure.Plus! The comic book this is based on is better than the movie and it's not even close. Also! No 'Is That A Cape?' again because there still aren't any capes in the movie we watched but don't let that put you off because there's a new video on the Is It A Bird YouTube channel instead. Thanks for downloading!email isitabirdpod@gmail.comtwitter @isitabirdpod https://twitter.com/isitabirdpod youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUXLIzqezSGihfXS6p7v5g
It's Tank Girl! It's the best comic book movie ever made... according to Madge anyway.Plus! We discuss whether it's good, ahead of its time even in 2019, edgy or finished. Also! No 'Is That A Cape?' this episode because there aren't any capes in this movie. Instead we discuss Margot Robbie optioning the property and why this will probably result in a terrible movie. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
Hey there!Whilst we take a break from our regular episode schedule so Kris can selflessly read a load of old comics, we bring you this gem from the 1990s: A Marvel Swimsuit Special! It's basically filth and/or cartoon pornography but we braved our way through every single page of it, from Wolverine to Silver Sable, for your listening pleasure. Thanks for downloading. We'll be back to regular episodes in two weeks time. In the meantime please send us an email - especially if you have a suggestion of something rotten from comic books past - to isitabirdpod@gmail.com and absolutely definitely go follow us on twitter @isitabirdpod and for gawd's sake say hello!
It's Logan! It could well be the best comic book movie ever made. We both agree on that as well which is a novelty for us both. We don't even mind the stupid bit at the end with X-24.Plus!Madge goes science on all your asses and breaks down why adamantium poisoning makes sense and why drowning Wolverine in a puddle does not. Also! Is That a Cape? - Now available on YouTube (search for Is That A Cape? or Is It A Bird)This time we're covering X-23, Mister Sinister and the Ogg Monst- sorry, Caliban. It's a good time and you will enjoy it too. Thanks very much for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
The Wolverine! It's actually a pretty decent movie which is a huge surprise considering the absolute state of the previous two we've watched! Madge absolutely smashes a plot breakdown and we even agree on the rating! Plus!Kris covers Wolverine's time in Japan and his comic book son who is maybe gay and maybe sexy but also maybe not either of those. Also!Is That a Cape? - It's back! This episode sees the discussion of some classic Jean Grey looks, Sunfire and Daken amongst others. If I ever work out how to do a YouTubes I'll get this up to fully exploit the visual aspects of the feature. Until then though, thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
X Men Origins: Wolverine! It's a bad movie with an overly convoluted title but it's not that bad? Not the worst ever anyway so enjoy our recap of all things plot and character and as we start to try to make sense of the timeline.Plus!Learn all about Wolverine's comic book origins and why adamantium bullets and kinetic energy powers just don't make any sense. Also!A new feature called 'Is That a Cape?' where we cast our fashionista eyes over some of the worst costumes in comic books - this time it's Silverfox, Gambit, Brown and Yellow Wolverine and 'Fang' Wolverine. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
X Men: The Last Stand!Aaaaand we're back to bad movies. After the last two this one is genuinely a disappointment but we have fun together! Plus!Xavier Professor Charles has how many brothers? Also! There's a number of plots here based on a number of comics containing a number of characters. We try our best to make sense of it all but, again, at least we've got each other. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
X2: X-Men United! The movie so good they gave it two names! It is genuinely good too! As good as the last one? I guess you'll have to listen to find out. Plus!Nightcrawler smells. Honestly. You won't believe it. Again, you'll have to listen to find out. Also! There are some famous comic book noises and Madge gets learns all about them. What does she think? I really cannot be more clear on my advice to listen and find out. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
X-Men! (and women) This is a truly excellent superhero movie. Honestly, it's probably one of the best ones that there's been and our review of it absolutely lives up to that billing!Plus! Can you imagine Bob Hoskins as Wolverine? Someone at Fox could apparently and Jeri Ryan as Jean Grey. What could have been, eh?Also!Comics are sometimes dumb. We've all accepted that. But how dumb? Listen to part two, think about the fun X-Facts I give you and decide for yourself. Spoiler: they're pretty dumb. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
Catwoman! It's probably the worst movie we've watched yet. You'd think that it wouldn't get much worse than Batman Forever and Robin but Pitof proved us all wrong didn't he.Plus!Halle Berry realised this was rubbish to the point where she even accepted a Razzie in person! She probably deserved better but listen to what her acceptance speech in Part 2!Also!Is there a villain? or a plot? or anything more than a series of music videos strung together? We'll try and work it out I guess. Thanks for downloading! For anything you want email isitabirdpod@gmail.com and find us on twitter @isitabirdpod
