What exactly was Jesus doing with the money changers?

Did Jesus lose control in the temple? Or did He reveal what truly mattered? When He overturned the tables, what was He doing? The temple was meant to be a place where people could meet God, but it had become a place that crowded out prayer, justice, and genuine worship. What tables might need to be flipped in our own lives? Flipping Tables Isn't Anger — It's Duty When people hear “flipping tables,” they often assume anger. That's not what this is. This conversation is about duty — the responsibility that shows up when recovery spaces drift away from healing and toward comfort, silence, or systems that protect themselves instead of people. Using the biblical image of Jesus flipping tables in the temple, we're talking about the difference between rage and righteous disruption — and why sometimes the most caring thing you can do is make things uncomfortable. This isn't about tearing recovery down. It's about clearing space so honesty, dignity, and real healing can return. We'll talk about: • Why disruption isn't the same as anger • What doesn't belong in healing spaces anymore • The personal cost of telling the truth in recovery • And how flipping tables can be an act of care, not conflict If you've ever felt uneasy about something in recovery but didn't feel safe questioning it — this conversation is for you. Flipping tables isn't anger. It's duty.

Jesus has two temple clearings in the Gospels. John 2:13-17 (earlier in His ministry) and Mark 21:12-14 - Jesus went straight to the Temple and threw out everyone who had set up shop, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of loan sharks and the stalls of dove merchants. He quoted this text:My house was designated a house of prayer;You have made it a hangout for thieves.Now there was room for the blind and crippled to get in. They came to Jesus and he healed them.So how do we create an atmosphere that's welcoming to others.
