Actively Unwoke: Fighting back against woke insanity in your life
I break down what Texas State Rep. Brian Harrison really uncovered when he went undercover at the University of Texas. Spoiler alert: it wasn't just about “trans issues.” It was a full-blown queer anarchist indoctrination fest—complete with crip theory, BDSM kink theology, and non-medical transition guides. He posted the photos, went viral, and called for the university to be defunded. I'm giving him credit where it's due—but also showing why conservatives keep missing the forest for the queer-theory-covered trees. If you want to understand what's actually going on in these circles, I've got the receipts. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - State Rep. Erin Elizabeth Gámez of Brownsville has led the tributes to former state Rep. René Oliveira, who has passed away at the age of 68.Oliveira served as Brownsville's representative in the Texas House for 33 years, from 1981 to 2019. He sat out two terms in the House when he ran unsuccessfully for the Texas Senate. At the time he left office in 2019 he was dean of the Rio Grande Valley legislative delegation and the fifth longest serving member of the House. At various times he chaired the Ways & Means Committee and the Economic Development Committee. And he and then-House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Pitts introduced Elon Musk to the Appropriations Committee when the SpaceX was looking for state support.“I'm heartbroken that our former state Representative René Oliveira passed away. I had the privilege of working in his office during college. He exemplified what it meant to be a public servant. He dedicated his life to working for the people of Cameron County and being a champion for those who needed someone to be their voice,” Gámez said.“The impact of his decades of work in the Legislature is immense. Particularly the work he did for the children of Texas - from improving public education, making higher education more attainable, and improving child support collections just to name a few. Though he is no longer with us the impact he made on our community will live on.”Oliveira, who had had heart problems for many years, died Jan. 23. But former state Rep. Juan Escobar of Kingsville said he seemed in good spirits when he spoke to him over the past weekend.“I cannot believe this. I just spoke to him on Saturday at around 5:00 PM and he sounded in good spirits. Our condolences to the family. May he Rest In Peace,” Escobar said. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., said Oliveira was a great leader, not just for Brownsville but for South Texas in general.“My relationship with Rene goes back pretty much to my teenage years. His family and my family and my parents, my Dad in particular knew each other for decades. But my most immediate recollection of Rene was when I was in college and unfortunately my younger brother (Ernie) had been killed in a tragic accident when he was nine years old,” Treviño told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.“Rene, shortly thereafter, was in the House of Representatives. And he authored a proclamation recognizing my little brother and it was a gesture that my parents appreciated, our entire family did, because it was something that he did on his own because of the relationship that he had with my family. He knew how this terrible tragedy had impacted us. And he did this this small gesture, but it meant so much to my family.“After that, he and I always had a very good personal and professional relationship, once I got back to practicing law. So, he was a leader in our community for decades. He gave himself of his community, serving at the House of Representatives. And more importantly, he always had the needs of the community at the forefront. “He was involved in legislation that helped take care of Brownsville, Cameron County, the Valley, and South Texas. And for that we will always be in debt, on a community level, and, obviously, for me on a personal level for this gesture that I just mentioned earlier.”But, it's a sad, sad, day for Brownsville, Cameron County, for the Valley, and for South Texas, because he was a true leader in every sense of the word and he will be sorely missed.”Editor's Note: Here is an audio interview with Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa about Rep. Oliveira. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
MCALLEN, Texas - State Rep. R.D. ‘Bobby' Guerra is encouraging his constituents to ask as many questions as possible of him.“Increasing transparency and efficiency in government is the upmost important thing that we do and I hope you all ask us questions, because that's the only way you're going to know what what we're doing,” Guerra said, at an event hosted recently by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership. The event was titled “Rio Grande Valley Legislators Appreciation Reception.” It was held at the Radisson in McAllen.Guerra, D-McAllen, represents District 41, covering all or parts of the cities of McAllen, Mission, Edinburg, Palmhurst, Lopezville, and Pharr. He was first elected in 2012 and is serving his sixth term in the Texas House. In his remarks, Guerra said the “word is getting” about the growth and dynamism of the region. He said he was honored to represent the region in the Texas House.“There are countless hours that we spend, trying to make sure that we're on the right side of history, trying to make sure that we're on the right side of things that are best for the Rio Grande Valley. And I mean that wholeheartedly,” Guerra said.“So, when you see the rest of the reps and, of course, the senators, give them a big hug and tell them you really appreciate what they're doing.”Guerra said his constituents should always feel free to contact him. “Hopefully, you're gonna like what you hear. And if you don't hear anything, then you can wonder, I wonder what he thought about that. So anyway, we're here to do the very best we can in the Legislature,” Guerra said.“It can be quite grueling. Sometimes we'll go till 2 or 3 in the morning. And that's always an experience.”Guerra added: “I just want you to know each and every one of my colleagues works countless hours to make sure that your children will thrive in the future. God bless you. God bless Texas. And my dear colleagues, thank you for serving with me. God bless.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
MCALLEN, Texas - State Rep. Terry Canales, a three-term chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, is perhaps best known for securing millions of dollars for transportation in the Rio Grande Valley. However, he told the audience at a Rio Grande Valley Partnership event on Wednesday evening that henceforth his priority will be water. The event, held at the Radisson Hotel in McAllen, was titled “Rio Grande Valley Legislative Appreciation Reception.” Other legislators at the event were state Senators Juan Hinojosa and Morgan LaMantia, and state Representatives R.D. ‘Bobby' Guerra and Armando Martinez.“Today, you all bring us here to recognize our efforts and I'm very grateful. But I would be more grateful if everybody would join me in one cause from here until the foreseeable future. Everybody in this room,” Canales said.“Everybody in this room is a stakeholder. Everybody in this room is a mover and a shaker. You are here because you care, because you're involved. You know things work.”Canales continued: “Water. Water is our future. And the Rio Grande Valley is running out of it quick. If you don't think so you need to speak with the people that are in charge of water.Canales said the Legislature lost two of its biggest advocates for water due to retirement, Reps. Lyle Larson and Eddie Lucio, III. Because of this, Canales said, he took it upon himself to get informed on the issue and to educate his staff.“I asked the people involved in water, how does the Rio Grande Valley get water? The response was extreme weather events. That's code for luck. And if we're dependent on luck for the future water, we don't have a plan, ladies and gentlemen.”Canales said the Valley should be planning the future of water now. “And I will tell you that that should be our focus. It's nice to have great roads. It's nice to have infrastructure. But we don't have life if we don't have water.”Canales said his door will always be one to constituents and stakeholders to discuss whatever is important to them. “You can come to me with all your issues. You can come to me with everything that's important to you and we will focus on everything's important to you. But if you're not focused… if everybody in the Valley is not focused on the future of water, then you haven't prioritized life.”After Canales had finished his speech, RGV Partnership President Daniel Silva thanked him. "Thank you for that awareness and that challenge,” Silva said.Incidentally, last year, the RGV Partnership held a huge regional event at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg that was attended by Gov. Greg Abbott. Elected officials, along with community and business leaders, were invited to discuss the future of the region. It was at this event that the Partnership adopted the motto, One Region, One Voice. There was no discussion of water at the event. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Please consider watching this episode on YouTube as it is a very visual interview and we even added elements to go along with some of the items we discussed in the episode. YouTube Part 2 This is Part 2 of the "Sex, Lies & Parenthood" special Pride Month edition of the podcast with entertainer and Drag Queen Ginger Ladd. Part 1 began with Ginger Ladd simultaneously going live on his social media, as he often does, to get ready in drag while recording the podcast with us. Part 2 was recorded exclusively for our podcast because Ginger was able to get a little more spicy with us than on social. If you missed part 1 please go check it out - it is such an intimate interview where he shared so many emotional moments of his life and even talked about the threats he gets even now because of his job as an entertainer. We recorded both parts before Texas State Rep. Bryan Slaton decided to attack family-friendly drag shows for allowing children to watch the performances. As a fellow Texan and Drag Queen performer, Ginger was nice enough to record a statement regarding the issue and we put it here in Part 2. We want to thank Ginger Ladd for allowing us a sneak peak into his world as an entertainer, and Drag Queen but also as a son, a husband, a father, and, most of all, a HUMAN who has gone through it all and still continues to embrace his audiences whether over social media or in person at live shows.
