Engage with scripture readings, heartfelt devotionals, and collective prayers that draw you into the heart of God's love. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! In today's episode, Heather leads us into the Scriptures on this second day of November, guiding us through Job chapters 23 and 24, and Mark chapters 11 and 12. As we journey together, Heather reminds us that we come to the Word—alongside people from all over the world—not just for wisdom, but to encounter Jesus, the true source of life. Today's readings explore deep questions of faith and justice, including Job's search for God amid suffering and Jesus' prophetic actions in Jerusalem—cursing the fig tree, overturning the temple, and teaching about the kingdom. Heather illuminates how these stories point to a new way of living and a new King, inviting us to look closely at people of faith like Abraham and the widow, and ultimately to fix our eyes on Jesus himself. The episode closes in prayer and gratitude, encouraging us to let the joy of the Lord be our strength and to remember: you are loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: A fig tree is cursed. A temple is overturned, tenant farmers are killed, and a vineyard is reclaimed and given to others. What's happening? Judgment is happening. Judgment is coming to God's people. Jesus is pointing to judgment. The passage in Mark reads almost like the Old Testament prophets like Jeremiah and Isaiah, impending judgment is coming. He curses the tree and he overturns the temple. A new way of approaching God has arrived. A new priest and a new king are being revealed. There is a new temple and a new way of living in God. Jesus points to this when he quotes from Psalm 110. After Jesus is questioned, he gathers a crowd together and he asks them why the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the son of David. David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, the Lord, said to my Lord, sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet. Since David himself called the Messiah my Lord, how can the Messiah be his son? The large crowd listened to him with great delight. I encourage you to read Psalm 110. It's a short seven verse chapter. It's about Melchizedek. He's a somewhat mysterious person that shows up in Genesis 14. And Abraham, the father of faith, acknowledges that Melchizedek is an eternal priest. And King Abraham demonstrates his allegiance to this King and priest, by offering him a tithe of all that he has. Abraham himself is a subject of this priest and king. Jesus is teaching us in this passage that he is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the fulfillment of this new way, this new system that God is revealing in the person of Christ. The fig tree is cursed and the temple has been turned over. God is making all things new with a new king and a new priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the king, eternal God, most high. People of faith like Abraham are going to come and serve him and be his subjects. There will be people great and small who serve him. In fact, this chapter ends with Jesus watching in the temple. And as a woman many thought was very small, a widow who had nothing but two pennies enters. She comes because she is faithful. She believes. She comes and offers all that she has. Her two pennies. They are an offering of faith because she is a person of faith. Jesus tells us to look closely at her. He also tells us in Psalm 110 to look closely at Abraham. These are people of faith. They live and worship in spirit and in truth. Look closely at Abraham, the widow and Melchizedek and let your eye be drawn even closer to Jesus. He is looking at you and inviting you to join in with him in his new kingdom life. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

On Sunday, we will dive into Mark 11:12-25, a challenging passage to understand and interpret. As Mark has done before (and will do several more times), he places one story inside another. Jesus' cleansing of the temple is placed between His cursing of the fig tree. When Jesus finds no figs on the tree, He declares that no one will eat fruit from it again. The next day, they pass by the tree and see it withered to the root. Earlier, Mark "sandwiched" Jesus' healing of the woman with the issue of blood between the healing of Jairus' daughter, and just as in that passage, here the cleansing of the temple interprets the cursing of the fig tree. In the Old Testament, a fig tree and a vineyard were common symbols for Israel. Therefore, the cursing of the fig tree serves as a prophetic warning condemning the fruitless temple worship in Jerusalem, which Jesus will immediately address. The fig tree, full of leaves but bearing no fruit, and the temple, busy with activity but lacking true worship, both face Jesus' judgment. However, the interpretive challenges of this passage don't end there. When the disciples see the withered tree, Jesus begins teaching about prayer, faith, and forgiveness. Jesus' response to Peter, who notes that the fig tree is withered, might seem like Jesus is shifting to a new topic unrelated to the story. (And some believe He does.) However, I believe Jesus is beginning to teach the disciples what He will make clearer during His last week of life. The temple was the place where prayers were offered and accepted by God, and where forgiveness was found. Yet, Jesus has just pronounced judgment on the corruption of the temple's worship. How can prayers be offered, and forgiveness found, if not in the temple? Jesus' final words in this section (22-25) reveal that by faith, prayers are answered, mountains are moved, and forgiveness is both received and extended to others. Take time to read Mark 11:12-25 several times; it is a difficult passage with a high risk of misunderstanding. Most of the sermon will focus on explaining the text, but ultimately, we discover that as the church, we are now God's temple (both as a body -1 Co. 3:16-17; and as individual Christians - 1 Co. 6:19-20), called to bear fruit through praying in faith, forgiving as we are forgiven, and being a light for all nations. I. The Symbolic Fruitless Fig Tree (12-14; 20-21) II. The Fruitless Worship In The Temple (15-19) III. The Fruitful Worship OF The Temple (22-25)

(Mark 11:12-25) As we continue to explore Jesus' final week in Jerusalem we come to a strange series of events. Jesus curses a fig tree, flips tables in the temple and then speaks to the disciples about the power of prayer. What is going on with all these events? While seemingly random and unconnected, Jesus is actually revealing and speaking to God's heart for His people. Join us this morning as Dave Clark takes the time to unpack and challenge us to consider what these events from Jesus mean for us.

In this lesson, we explore the rich and multi-layered dialogue between Jesus and Nathanael in John 1:47–51. What begins with a curious statement about a man “under the fig tree” ends with a stunning reference to Jacob's dream—the vision of angels ascending and descending from Genesis 28:10–15. But the connections don't stop there. You'll discover how Jesus quotes Psalm 32:2, a psalm of David, and yet the ancient Rabbinic Midrash on that same verse ties it directly to Jacob, leading to a remarkable overlap of themes. Is it a coincidence? Not likely—there are no coincidences in Scripture.

Jesus' paradoxical teaching about the "grain of wheat" may seem strange at first, but as St. Cyril of Alexandria, Pope Benedict XVI, and Larry Chapp point out, it's written all over the natural world for us to see plainly, foreshadowing the redemptive suffering of Jesus on the cross and echoing the eternal life and love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 00:00 Introduction 01:02 Reading of Matthew 18: Jesus Curses the Fig Tree 01:41 Why is Jesus hungry? 02:31 The importance of a fig tree in the Gospel 03:42 God is working to restore paradise for all creation 04:41 The Garden of Eden and gardens in the Gospels 07:12 God is the gardener of salvation history. Examples in the Old Testament 08:27 Jesus' action is foreshadowed by the prophet Ezekiel 09:44 It was “not the season for figs” but God expects fruit anyway 10:11 Jesus teaches about the “dying seed” 12:19 St. Cyril of Alexandria and the “analogy of nature” 13:21 Cardinal Ratzinger explains the “mystery of the dying grain” 14:41 Larry Chap and the mystery of redemptive suffering 15:11 Reading of John 12 - “He who loses his life will save it” 16:43 Suffering on earth is an image of the inner life of the Trinity 17:17 Jesus “leaned obedience through what he suffered” 19:24 The Fathers of the Church took the Gospel's “nature logic” seriously 20:43 St. Clement of Alexandria: The Word of God is the pruning knife of the soul 22:20 Reading of Luke 13: Jesus' parable of the master's vineyard 23:46 Application of the parable 24:19 Conclusion Learn More For more content from Benedictine College, visit media.benedictine.edu The Extraordinary Story is a podcast about the life of Jesus Christ, who entered the maze of our world to transform it into a path to Him, today and always. My Favorite Trees

Many children around the world grow up singing the nursery rhyme, "Here we go 'round the Mulberry bush." But what is a Mulberry bush? And have you ever even seen its tasty Mulberries in grocery stores? Turns out, this tree (not bush) is better known for something other than its fruit, and that fame has deeply pervaded world cultures whether you know it or not. Listen to find out how, but I'll give you a hint! The Mulberry is closely related to Fig Trees, so it may or may not have something to do with a particular insect.Tons of bonus content is available on my Patreon! Bible Study Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: 1 Sam 3:1-20, John 1:43-51. Sermon Notes What is the meaning of Christianity? What is the purpose of the life of faith? Why do we go to church? Sometimes it's good to get back to the basics. Jesus speaks two words that reorient us to the to the end goal of the Christian life - "Follow Me." To receive and respond to these words is to begin a life of discipleship. German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer provides a helpful description of discipleship. It is a "determined quest for him who is the sole object of it all, for Jesus Christ himself."(Cost of Discipleship, "Introduction"). From the call of Nathaniel in John 1, we see three different responses that a follower of Jesus might experience at various points in their faith journey: Initial Skepticism - "Can anything good come out of Nazareth." Skepticism, doubts, and questions are normal.  They need not keep us from investigating Jesus a bit more.  "Come and see." Personal Encounter - "I saw you under the fig tree." Sometimes God shows up in our circumstances in a real and personal way. This can open our eyes to the power and presence of Jesus and help propel us forward in discipleship. Invitation to Greater Things - "You will see greater things than these." Jesus has seen Nathaniel. Now he wants Nathaniel to see him and how he reveals God's glory. Discipleship is about seeing and knowing more and more of Jesus. Sermon Application Whether presently or in the past, what are some doubts or questions that troubled you about the Christian faith? Have you found satisfying answers? Describe a "come and see" approach to engaging skeptics or nonbelieving friends or family? Have you had a "fig tree" experience with God? How did that impact your personal discipleship? Do you want more in 2024? What might "greater things" look like in your life? Questions? Do you have a question about today's sermon? Email Randy Forrester (RForrester@StAndrews.Church).

The Rev. Thomas Eckstein, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Mark 11:1-26. As Jesus rides triumphantly into Jerusalem on a colt, greeted by jubilant crowds waving palm branches, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation. Yet, beneath the surface, tension simmers as Jesus confronts the religious establishment and challenges their practices. We then witness a powerful demonstration of Jesus' authority, as he curses a barren fig tree, and cleanses the temple, symbolizing the impending judgment. Beneath the fast-paced action of Jesus' ministry in the Gospel of Mark lies a profound theological message: we are all in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. Though Jesus performs mighty deeds and calls people to repent, they repeatedly fail to understand his true identity and mission. Even his disciples abandon him in his darkest hour. Yet Jesus willingly suffers and dies on the cross as a ransom for many, accomplishing what we could not do ourselves - securing our justification before God. Mark presents Jesus not just as a miracle worker but as the divine Savior whose atoning sacrifice makes salvation possible for lost sinners.

Pastor Matt continues our sermon series in the gospel of Mark looking at Mark 11:12-25.Old Testament Passages on Fig Trees and God's Judgment:Isaiah 34:1-4Jeremiah 29:15-19Hosea 2:10-12Joel 1:1-12Micah 7:1-7And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant - these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Isaiah 56:6-7 Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the LORD.  Jeremiah 7:11Communion Reflection Questions:Are there areas of my life that I need to repent because I am bearing leaves but no fruit?Am I going through the motions, busy with religious work, but my heart is hardened or indifferent to God?Where do I need to repent of my desire to be more focused on doing things for God than resting in and moving in obedience to God?Who do I exclude from hearing God's Word in the name of religion? How do I need to pray for myself and others in light of the reality that Jesus is both Savior and Judge?  Life Church exists to glorify God by making disciples who treasure Christ, grow together, and live on mission. In this week's reading, we encounter the events that begin the final days of Jesus' life. Many of these events we have covered in previous episodes in our Holy Week Series, such as Mary anointing Jesus, Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem (twice, actually!) and Jesus' cleansing of the temple (again, twice!). Having already covered the most iconic stories in this week's text freed us up to explore some of the lesser celebrated stories like the cursing of the fig tree, Zacchaeus, and Jesus' critique of hypocrisy. The transcript for this episode is available on our website at www.thefaithfulfeminists.com
