"When you start to talk about stuff being really bad, I don't have a solution. I don't know what to do, and I don't know how to ask for help. We've shared often over the past few months how the pandemic has affected small businesses and nonprofits we love, but we haven't given a ton of details on how we've been affected as a coworking space. This week on Zero to Ten we've got an extra special, long episode with hygge's founder and owner Garrett Tichy, and we get into the nitty gritty of what 2020 was like for us. He'll talk about our losses, how the tumultuous environment has affected his mental health, the decision to take on debt or not, and share the pretty grim, frank reality that there is no telling what the next few months will bring and if our small business will survive. It's not the cheeriest episode we've ever published, but it is one of the most realistic.

December 25 is a special day every year around this time, and so it's fitting that we bring you Episode 25 this holiday season. Our most recent episode features Joe and Katy Kindred of Charlotte's runaway hit restaurants Kindred and Hello, Sailor! Let us first acknowledge the return of Page's favorite podcast intro on this episode. While we will always thank our buddy Penn Holderness for whipping together the intro you've heard over the previous 24 episodes in about 39 seconds, it was the throwaway clip of Jake you just heard that will likely kick things off going forward. We're either terribly sorry, or you're very welcome. Now, on to our guests... Joe and Katy have had a mildly successful foray into restaurateurship. After long, winding careers in the industry, spanning Charlotte, Chicago and San Francisco, and then back to Charlotte, the couple launched Kindred in Davidson. To say it was a rocket ship not only in the greater Queen City-area but nationwide would be putting it mildly. Kindred hit every "Top New _____" list in 2015, and it helped transform historic downtown Davidson in the process. On the heels of this success, the couple turned their attention to Lake Norman, where they took an old, declining shore front restaurant and flipped it into Hello, Sailor. In the span of a couple of years and a few miles, the Kindreds redefined night life in greater Charlotte. Joe's the chef and Katy's the brains behind the look and feel of their businesses and brand. The two talk about how they're raising their three young children as "restaurant kids," about all of the twists and turns they endured en route to their success and about how important it is for couples to continue to date even after marriage. In fact, they were headed to grab sushi immediately following the podcast. We loved them, and we think you will too. We can’t thank Joe and Katy enough for joining us on this episode, and as always, big thanks to Garrett Tichy, Hygge and Richard Brooke for having us as a member of their inaugural Hygge Podcast Residency! We're back for Episode 20 of the Date Night with Jake and Page podcast! This episode is a family affair, as we had Casey (Page's brother!) & Michelle Crawford in the studio! To call Casey and Michelle a power couple would be an understatement. Not only are they both CEOs and owners of their respective companies, Movement Mortgage and Rising Crossfit Ballantyne in the Charlotte-area, but both are literally powerful. Casey doesn't look too far removed from his time with the Carolina Panthers (where he played from 2000-2001 before earning a Super Bowl ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and it was only one year ago that Michelle competed in the CrossFit Games (where she starred from 2013-17). While we were definitely guilty of steering too far at times into family jokes, we heard about the crazy story of how they realized they were each other's ones, how a couple from Virginia and New Jersey decided to call Charlotte home, and how they manage from going insane living so close to family (ahem). Lauren and Ali had us on an episode of theirs back in 2016, and we've been planning on turning the tables on them ever since. We finally got them in the studio, but you know we had to make it a date night, so they brought their current boos, Brad (Lauren) and Phil (Ali). What transpired was an hour of so...much...fun. New baby, new brewery, both growing like crazy. NBD. As you can see in the thumbnail, we celebrated Jake's birthday and the podcast's. In that order. 2. Cheers, Charlotte! We're bringing you Episode 13 of the Date Night with Jake and Page podcast, where you'll hear from NoDa Brewing Company Founders and Owners, Todd and Suzie Ford! [FAN BOY ALERT!!!] As Page mentions in the podcast, when we debated moving to Charlotte back in 2014, the "Pros" list was: family, NoDa, jobs, Hop Drop, etc., etc. You get the point. We've been fans of the brewery for years, so it was only fitting that we bring on the couple behind what has become one of Charlotte's and the industry's leading craft beer brands. Todd and Suzie talk about how both of their companies were acquired around the same time, which coincided with a growing buzz around Todd's home brewing and tasting parties. They decided to make the proverbial leap to launch NoDa, and the rest is history. Now, they say, it's about keeping up the demand and all of the latest and greatest trends in the industry, while also standing up against state legislation which is currently limiting the growth of N.C. brewers. We can't thank Todd and Suzie enough for joining us on this episode, and as always, big thanks to Garrett Tichy, Hygge and Richard Brooke for having us as a member of their inaugural Hygge Podcast Residency! Garrett Tichy is the owner and founder of Hygge Coworking in Charlotte, NC. Garrett's story is one that is familiar to many entrepreneurs: unsatisfied with a comfortable, yet ultimately unfulfilling full time job, Garrett set out on his own to take his future into his own hands. After several years as a manager at Gamestop, Garrett knew that a career change was inevitable. The first step was to get a computer programming degree, which he did at the top of his class. Soon after finding a job in the industry, he decided to take ownership of his work by co-founding Ready at 7, a boutique marketing firm. Not long after that, Garrett made another pivot into the emerging world of coworking. Garrett bought out the co-working studio that Ready at 7 was based out of and turned it into Hygge Coworking. Since founding in 2015, Hygge has expanded to three locations in the Charlotte area, and boasts over 100 full time members. In this episode, Garrett talks about making the transition from full-time employment to small business ownership, the value of social capital, and the benefits of having a CPA take care of the financial footwork.

The Hornets gig is just one part of their looooong list of jobs, appearances, hosting opps, emcee gigs, etc., etc. Hearing how they balance everything should be required listening for any couple with two working spouses. Add in three sons from Ty's previous marriage and a book launch for Jacinda, and, well, yeah. Insanity. We caught them just before the launch of Jacinda's book, "Uniquely Qualified", on Nov. 9 (pick up a copy on Amazon!), so the timing was great. Jacinda touched on various pieces from her book, ranging from her troubled background to how she's now able to use her platform on TV, the radio and through events to help spread her message of living life to the fullest. Ty was right there by her side, hyping her book like a pro. They truly are #relationshipgoals. (Oh, and their daughter too!) Bob got Jake to drink bourbon. We can probably just start and end this podcast description there. Yeah, he's THAT good. In all seriousness, if you live in or around the QC - or really the world at this point - and you like a good cocktail, you have either been to The Punch Room, heard of The Punch Room, or The Punch Room is on your Charlotte Bucket List. Bob is a genius behind the bar, and he's built a global following around his concoctions. While you may already know about Bob, you SHOULD know about Jena as well. You've got to hear some of the stories she tells in this episode. Jena has a storied career in showbiz, and she's continued it through to today as the owner and operator of JBP Entertainment, a performing arts studio and entertainment production office in uptown Charlotte. Any time you can talk about Charlotte's past, present and future with a sitting mayor while sharing local craft beer with her and her husband, you jump at the opportunity. We got to do just that with Manley and Mayor Roberts (which we probably should have called her; all night we went with Jennifer...whoops!), who shared her political career path over our hour together. Within the first minute you'll hear just how amazing Jennifer and Manley are, and you'll also hear how much they love to dance. Seriously, we met them on a dance floor. They SHUT DOWN Cam Newton's charity gala, and then immediately kicked off this podcast talking about how they danced in college...and later when they dated...and on and on. Good grief, we loved them. While we try not to talk too much shop on our show - the point is to get to know the guests off the court/outside of work - Mayor Roberts was gracious enough to open up about her roller coaster two years in office, as well as her recent surprise defeat in the Democratic mayoral primary. It was truly a fascinating look into the personal lives of a couple currently going through ups, downs, surprises and turmoil, all in one. You know, like the rest of us.
