Covering the whole of the ancient Greek experience from its beginnings late in the third millennium BCE to the Roman conquest in 30 BCE, Out of One, Many: Ancient Greek Ways of Thought and Culture (Princeton UP, 2024) is an accessible and lively introduction to the Greeks and their ways of living and thinking. In this fresh and witty exploration of the thought, culture, society, and history of the Greeks, Jennifer Roberts traces not only the common values that united them across the seas and the centuries, but also the enormous diversity in their ideas and beliefs.Examining the huge importance to the Greeks of religion, mythology, the Homeric epics, tragic and comic drama, philosophy, and the city-state, the book offers shifting perspectives on an extraordinary and astonishingly creative people. Century after century, in one medium after another, the Greeks addressed big questions, many of which are still very much with us, from whether gods exist and what happens after we die to what political system is best and how we can know what is real. Yet for all their virtues, Greek men set themselves apart from women and foreigners and profited from the unpaid labor of enslaved workers, and the book also looks at the mixed legacy of the ancient Greeks today. The result is a rich, wide-ranging, and compelling history of a fascinating and profoundly influential culture in all its complexity—and the myriad ways, good and bad, it continues to shape us today. On Jan. 6, Josephine County Commissioners voted to terminate the lease of the Grants Pass central library. Commissioners have since said they simply want to renegotiate the $1-a-year lease of the county-owned building. This comes after a legal battle last year over whether residents could opt out of the library’s special tax district. It also follows a period of 10 years in which the library system was run by a nonprofit and volunteers, rather than by the county. Josephine County Commissioner Chris Barnett and Jennifer Roberts, president of the Grants Pass Friends of the Library, join us to fill us in.
Last week the nation paused to honor the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter. Carter died December 29, 2024 at the age of 100, and while opinions vary as to how successful his one term in the White House was, there's a widespread consensus that no president in American history enjoyed a more […]

In s3e66 of Platemark, host Ann Shafer talks with Jennifer Roberts, an art historian and professor at Harvard, about her latest book, Contact: Art and the Pull of Print, which explores the intersection of intellectual and technical richness in print. Jennifer's book offers a fresh perspective on printmaking, synthesizing simple maneuvers like reversal and pressure to account for the medium's expansive influence. Based on her acclaimed Mellon Lectures delivered during the pandemic, the book is both conversational and accessible, aiming to engage a wide audience beyond the traditional confines of print expertise. They also talk about Jennifer's journey into the world of print, which began during her research into the movement and dissemination of images within the Anglo-American world during the 18th and 19th centuries. Initially focused on the path of oil paintings, she inadvertently found herself immersed in the world of prints, specifically currency engraving—an intricate craft demanding the production of unreplicable reproductive objects to combat counterfeiting. Jennifer shares insights from her 20+ years of teaching where she emphasizes long looking at objects (3 hours!) and integrates studio and theoretical learning. Additionally, Jennifer discusses an exciting collaboration with artist Dario Robleto. Their joint work delves into the fascinating realm of printed sound, specifically examining the Golden Record—a phonographic record sent into space on the Voyager probes. This project exemplifies Jennifer's penchant for exploring the intersections of materiality, meaning, and communication within both earthly and cosmic contexts, as well as the intersections of art, science, and the evolution of visual culture. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP President Elect and AABP Annual Conference Program Chair Dr. Dave Sjeklocha. Sjeklocha thanks his program committee who are volunteer AABP members who develop the content for the conference. The theme of the conference is “Challenge the Norm” and Sjeklocha states he picked this theme to encourage members to challenge themselves with what they are doing for their clients and continue to improve and advance their practice. The keynote speaker, Dr. Shawn Baker, will challenge the norm on assumptions about eating an animal-sourced diet and help our members advocate for the products that our clients produce. We will also hear from the AABP vice president candidates for 2025, Dr. Elizabeth Quesnell Kohtz and Dr. Jennifer Roberts, after the keynote address. We walk through some of the highlights from the sessions including presentations on small ruminants, beef, dairy, clinical skills, practice management, student sessions and case competition, and research summaries. Sjeklocha also developed a cattle welfare track this year at the conference. This session will be for beef and dairy veterinarians and provide an opportunity for advancement in the field of animal welfare, an important part of our oath in caring for cattle. The conference is typically planned 10 months in advance, but we leave two time slots open for hot topics. This year, we will hear a presentation on the draft updated AVMA Guidelines for the Depopulation of Animals, focusing on the cattle portion of the document. We will also have a panel presentation on Influenza A H5N1, providing attendees with experiences from a diagnostic lab, practicing veterinarian, and a producer who is a veterinarian and went through the disease. There will be ample time for question and answer during this panel presentation. Sjeklocha also describes the clinical forum breakfast presentations which are an additional two hours of CE facilitated by an expert and is discussion-based in a small-group format. The AABP conference is not only about CE sessions, but networking and socializing opportunities as well. We have an opening reception sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, breakfast presentations from Diamond V and Zoetis, the scholarship presentation and Amstutz Scholarship Auction sponsored by Zoetis, Stampede 5K sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and the Saturday Awards and Business Lunch sponsored by AABP. We also will have a student reception sponsored by Endovac and the student Quiz Bowl sponsored by Vaxxinova/Newport Laboratories. Reminder that the early-bird registration discount ends August 1, and online registration and hotel block closes August 22. We encourage all attendees to book in the AABP hotel block and only use the online AABP housing link to ensure your room confirmation. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Sometime around two and half millennia ago, a cluster of cities and states around the northeastern Mediterranean began to do amazing things. For some reason they began to spread out, establishing towns and outposts around the fringe of both the Mediterranean and the Black Seas. And as they sailed and traded in the outer world, they also began to explore with ever-increasing rigor their inner world, with a series of big questions which remain important to us even to this day. All the while, they competed feverishly with one another: in athletics, in war, in trade, in sex, in the arts, and in all the varieties of social life. These were the people we call the Greeks. But how did such a diversity of people gain a common title, or come to represent a common culture? Amongst their commonalities, what were their differences? And despite their often uncanny ability to think and act in ways that still make us feel a deep connection to them, how were they very different from us, and very similar to others of their own world? With me to survey the unities and diversities of the ancient Greeks is Jennifer Roberts, Professor of classics and history at the City College of New York and the City University of New York Graduate Center. Her many books include The Plague of War: Athens, Sparta, and the Struggle for Ancient Greece and Herodotus: A Very Short Introduction, both of which were the subject of previous conversations on this podcast. Her most recent book is Out of One, Many: Ancient Greek Ways of Thought and Culture, which is the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation Jennifer Roberts previous episodes were on the Peloponnesian War, and on the historian Herodotus. We've done a lot of episodes on Ancient Greece, enough for a mini-curriculum. Here is Paul Cartledge on Thebes; Andrew Bayliss on Sparta; and Bruce Clark on Athens (though admittedly little of that conversation was about ancient Athens). Chroma: Ancient Sculpture in Color I referred to my two conversations with Tom Holland, the first one concerning his book Dominion, and the second and most recent conversation about his book PAX. Hunter Rawlings, classicist and expert on Thucydides

It's been an eventful week. I've had a tree die and crash through my window and witnessed a woman nearly drown in front of me. It's got me pretty agitated, so I figured now would be as good a time as any - to embark on an experiment to quell my relentless need for distraction. The agitation that goes along with not being good at focusing for long periods can cause huge dips in productivity - and now that I'm running my own business - and have no boss to answer to - the only person who suffers if yours truly isn't working efficiently - is - well - yours truly. Enter: The Art Challenge. A 3 hour exercise in focus and patience - pioneered by art historian Jennifer Roberts. One piece of art. 3 hours. No phones. No laptops. No friends. Just you, a notebook and pen - and the art of your choice. How hard could it be? Right?? Right?? hmmmm.... So - having committed to meeting a friend at the art gallery who would help me choose a painting for the 3 hour art challenge - I knew there was no backing out. Happy to report - I made it to the full 3 hours. Was it uncomfortable? Hell yes. Did I learn anything? Oh yeah baby. It was a fascinating experiment and one I highly recommend (if you can find 3 hours to spare). If you can't even begin to think of finding 3 hours to stare at a piece of art - well - the next 30 minutes will give you the next best experience. :D https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/wellbeing/wellbeing-oliver-burkeman-patience-four-thousands-weeks-book-1168413

The two started rescuing distinctive lots from prestigious wineries to make their blend in 2011. Inspired by the power of a Mouton Rothschild, Claire earned a wine degree in Chile and then traveled to France to work harvest in St. Emilion and the Côte du Rhône. She also owns Claire de Lune Consulting, which focuses on helping fantastic producers, including Matthiasson Wines, Anomaly Vineyards, Morlet Family Estate, Cowhorn Winery, and more, to grow their businesses. In this episode with Claire Ducrocq Weinkauf What power can wine bring to the table? How can it be a medium to eliminate the gap between people and lead them to share their experiences? Wine evokes emotions in people, just like music and art do. It works as the perfect conversation starter, bringing people together. Claire Ducrocq Weinkauf used this theory while setting up her store. In today's episode of the Legends Behind the Craft podcast, Drew Thomas Hendricks and Bianca Harmon sit down with Claire Ducrocq Weinkauf, CEO of Picayune Cellars, as she talks about her journey in winemaking. Claire also shares her profound appreciation of wines. She explains how she managed to bring the winery to its current position and how doing business in Calistoga differs from other states.

In this episode of Into the Fray, host Erik Mansur, VP of Product Marketing at Crayon is joined by Jennifer Roberts, Director of Market Strategy at ServiceTitan. This series has focused a lot on getting buy-in from your key stakeholders, how to build credibility as the primary driver of your CI efforts, and creating an ongoing conversation between you and your audience about this process in order to help build a better program. There hasn't been a conversation about training those stakeholders, turning them into little curators or providers of competitive intelligence. What we HAVE heard from other guests is that making other team members feel like participants in the process is immensely valuable, and this episode is all about how you can go off and do just that.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Some 5,000 years ago nomadic peoples of central Asia settled on the Iranian plateau. Their descendants would be the nucleus of an extraordinary empire that reached north to the lands of their ancestors, eastwards to India and China, and west as far as the Libyan desert and the Aegean Sea. These were the Persians, who not only created the first of the world-empires, but also brought about the first period of significant and continuous contact between the east and the west. What is typically known about the Persians comes from Herodotus, who in his Histories told the story of how Persia came to invade Greece, and how the Greeks were able to repel the greatest empire yet known to mankind. But what is the Persian version of the story? What would the Persians have said about themselves? With me to discuss the Persian Empire of the Achaemenid Kings is Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, chair of ancient history at Cardiff University, and director of the Ancient Iran Program for the British Institute of Persian Studies. His latest book is Persians: The Age of the Great Kings, and it is the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation Early in the conversation, when discussing the importance of the Persian's nomadic past, I made reference to a conversation with Pamela Crossley. This was Episode 185; her book on the importance of nomadic thought and culture for all of Eurasia is Hammer and Anvil: Nomad Rulers at the Forge of the Modern World. Lloyd had some tough things to say about Herodotus; for a different perspective, see my conversation in Episode 116 on "The First Historian" with Jennifer Roberts, a Herodotus scholar.
In 510 BC, an obscure Greek city located literally on a backwater revolted against its tyrant. This was not extraordinary; such things happened regularly in the many Greek city-states. What followed however was extraordinary, and even world-changing. Athens became a democracy. Then just seventeen years after that, Athens and its tiny ally of Plataea defeated a raid by the mighty Persian Empire. The great century of Athenian glory had begun.Yet the history of Athens did not end with either Spartan victory in the Peloponnesian War, or with the supremacy of Macedon, or even with conquest by Rome. While never quite attaining its heights under Pericles, Athens was often important; and even when it was relatively unimportant, it always remained interesting. The history of Athens, both during its decades of glory and its centuries of relative peace and quiet, is chronicled by Bruce Clark in his new book Athens: City of Wisdom. Clark is a writer for The Economist, where he covers European affairs and religion. He moves from Athenian origins, to Periclean Athens; from to the medieval city when the Parthenon was the castle of the Duke of Athens, to Ottoman conquest; to Greek independence, and Athens becoming the capital of a new Kingdom of Greece; and all the way into the 21st century. For Further Investigation Also by Bruce Clark, a history of events mentioned in our conversation (as well as in the conversation with Roderick Beaton): Twice a Stranger: The Mass Expulsions That Formed Modern Greece and Turkey For a very important part of Athenian history we deliberately ignored, see the conversation with classical historian Jennifer Roberts in Episode 121: The War Between the Greeks, or, The Forever War For another different perspective on Athens, see Episode 179: What's the Good of Ambition, or, Socrates and Alcibiades The Acropolis Museum Atlas Obscura is one of my favorite sites to browse, and here's The Atlas Obscura Guide To Athens: 55 Cool, Hidden, and Unusual Things to Do in Athens Greece Al Zambone is a historian and the host of the excellent podcast Historically Thinking.
