If we all scream for ice cream, then this episode of the BrandBuilders Podcast is going to get pretty loud. We're talking to a pair of ice cream entrepreneurs who are bringing something new and different – and we'll bet, pretty delicious – to the frozen treat game here in Charlotte. Garrett Tichy and Jess Berresse are co-founders of Seemingly Overzealous, a dairy-free dessert location that opens this weekend at Camp North End. We've got them both here for the … yes, we have to say it: “the scoop,” on this all-new venture.
We're sitting down with Jess Berresse, the better half of Seemingly Overzealous, a dairy-free ice cream shop coming to Camp North End in just a few weeks. She also just happens to be hygge coworking's owner, Garrett Tichy's, girlfriend. We learn about her favorite and least favorite flavors, get an update on the shop and talk about the difficulty of building a business with someone you also live with.
Welcome back! Jessica and Garrett who are the owners of the opening soon dairy-free ice cream shop, Seemingly Overzealous in Camp North End stop by. We chat about their journeys to Charlotte and their emotions on taking a chance to follow their passion in opening an ice cream shop.
Meet Dylan Smith, owner of Current Nostalgia, one of the newest shops at Camp North End. Current Nostalgia is a streetwear boutique and brand which has been operating online since 2020 but just a few weeks ago opened its first physical location at Camp North End in Charlotte. We sat down with Dylan to learn about his journey, his dog and what exactly streetwear is.
So, this week I completed the puzzle. Dion blessed the WGN pod on Vol. 1, and I said I would circle the block and pick up his partner so we can chop it up too! We are talking with Davita Galloway, co-owner of Dupp & Swat in Camp North End. Davita wears many hats - and I honestly can't decide what titles to add on this post so let's just sum it all up and call her a "Renaissance Woman" okay? She has one hell of a story to tell, and luckily for the WGN pod she was an open book and gave us some insight to who she is as a person. We discuss her growing up in Winston Salem and being the "smart kid" in class. Despite being the kid who got good grades, not everybody in class was feeling her achievements. She just wanted to be a normal kid and for everybody to like her, but they didn't make it easy for her. As she got older she started coming into her own as a person and wanted to experience new things and that's when she realized fashion was her dream. She admits during a portion of her journey she lost her way and needed to find her place of comfort to get back in sync; which is home, and home is where the heart is. Home is where Dupp & Swat was created! A good portion of this conversation stems from the memoir she wrote called 'Two Scraped Knees' and it gives a brief snapshot of the journey on who Davita is today! Enjoy the Convo folks! #WhoGotNext #CLT
Fresh 2 Death Exhibition was a two day showcase event that took place Sept 10-11 at Camp North End in CLT. The event, labeled Fashion StreetWhere, was brought to you by designers who created installments to highlight their contribution to the fashion scene in the CLT community and beyond. From fashion studios, models, Cars, Vendors, and an influx of patrons that stepped foot in the building you can feel the energy and a shift in culture to show what the city has cooking. The weekend was capped off by a fashion show that featured the designers for the weekend. WGN had an opportunity to set up shop and do a bit of "speed podding" to highlight the experience. I will be bringing you 3 parts of conversations with individuals involved in making this event a success. Special thanks to Dupp & Swatt and Crownkeepers for letting me be apart of this great event! #WhoGotNext #CLTure

So many of us are out here forcing it. We're comparing ourselves to others, presenting a certain way on social media that isn't true to reality, and avoiding creativity because we know it won't be perfect on the first shot. In this episode, we're interviewing our great friend, artist, and entrepreneur Windy O'Connor on how to let that shit go so your authenticity can flow. We talk about how to quit forcing it when it comes to art, motherhood, entrepreneurship, and so much more! You don't have to be the best artist, just allow yourself to create and express yourself freely. Liz puts her art on the fridge, and you should too! Be proud of what you create (even if it's not great!). As mothers, we truly are just a person helping our kids navigate their way through childhood and into adulthood. It's our job to love them and support them, but we need to stay out of their way so they can truly shine. Don't look at other people's businesses and assume you know what's going on behind the scenes. Entrepreneurship is really hard, but it should also be fun. Continually evaluate and ask yourself “is this really working for me?” Be Powerful with Liz & Lee, formerly Hilliard Studio Podcast, is focused on helping you find your inner power and for us to share our thoughts on society, culture, and current events. As the team behind Hilliard Studio Method in Charlotte, North Carolina, we love all things wellness and will also share info on how to live your healthiest life mentally, physically, and emotionally. When Camp North End first opened its factories in 1924, innovation was at the core of everything. Over the decades, the space has been used to build Model-Ts for the Ford Motor Company, to support American soldiers in World War II, and to manufacture missiles during the Cold War. Now, nearly 100 years later, things look a little different at Camp North End but that spirit of innovation remains. Over the past few years, Camp North End has blossomed into a hub for artists, chefs, and entrepreneurs to work, play, and continue to innovate their craft. Camp North End creates a welcoming space for creativity and community in Charlotte with shops, restaurants, murals, and events designed for all people. When Varian Shrum, the Community Manager of Camp North End, joins us on the Human Touch, we will discuss the past, present, and future of Camp North End.

Retail businesses have been on a roller-coaster ride since last March, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced many to close their doors. A year afterward, with vaccination rates climbing, the path forward for retail businesses is coming into clearer focus.Cindy Fox, a marketing lecturer in UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business and an expert in retail businesses, and Varian Shurm, Community Manager for Charlotte’s Camp North End, a 76-acre historic site transformed into a hub for innovation and creativity, join to discuss this shift in retail.
While the majority of the world shut down or hit pause during 2020 in the face of Covid-19, Charlotte's Camp North End team kept quietly working to continue to grow. The 76-acre revitalized industrial park managed to open 13 food, beverage and retail shops on its campus during the year and kept construction going to allow it to enter into Phase 2 of its 20 year project plan. In this episode, we chat with Camp North End's Varian Shrum to learn how her team adapted during the pandemic and what's coming next.
Recently named one of the Best New Restaurants of 2020 by Esquire Magazine, Chef Gregory Collier’s Leah & Louise is the latest concept of he and his wife, Subrina. Chef Gregory Collier was born in Memphis, TN in the summer of 1981. Even at a very young age, he always had a special place in his heart for food and its preparations. His first real memories of cooking were at his grandmother’s where she would be making her famous “butter rolls”. She would never reveal the recipe to him, but he knew then that someday he would try to make people feel the same way she had made him feel about the preparation of very desirable and delectable foods."The top story in American cooking over the past decade has been the rise of Black chefs such as Mashama Bailey, Edouardo Jordan, and Kwame Onwuachi—and a long-overdue celebration of the foodways of the African diaspora. At Leah & Louise, the Memphis-born chef Gregory Collier—who owns the Camp North End juke joint with his wife, Subrina—moves that conversation into its next phase, with a vision of Black southern cuisine that’s as innovative as it is fun. He takes inspiration from the soil (his okra dish, called Mama Earth, looks and tastes like a supernova of texture and flavor) and from the dollar store (the cream inside his oatmeal-cookie sandwich is suffused with Tang).” — Esquire Magazine Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. How can developers take a former factory, rich in history, and transform it into a successful retail powerhouse? Today we're joined by Damon Hemmerdinger, Co-President at ATCO and Camp North End's Placemaker-in-Chief. Once used to produce Model Ts and Army missiles, this 76-acre historic industrial site now serves as a hub for creativity and innovation, as Charlotte's largest adaptive reuse project, in the heart of the North End Smart District. Listen along as we take a deep dive into ATCO's plans for the project, discuss how public art and repurposing buildings became crucial to the redevelopment efforts, and why short-term leases are beneficial to both landlords and a sites trendy and "fresh" atmosphere.
This week we connected with Damon Hemmerdinger of Camp North End to learn more about the project and its innovative long term vision. We also talked about baseball walkup songs and the Hornets new uniforms.
In an effort to define social capital and show the profound effects it has on our community, we're introducing a new series of podcasts called Who Built Me. We've asked several prominent Charlotteans to talk about the people and ideas that have shaped them into who they are today. In the latest edition of The Biscuit's Who Built Me series, Andy Goh talks to artist and entrepreneur Eric Ndelo. Eric is cofounder of screen printing company Mac Fly Fresh, located in Camp North End and known for their colorful and interactive pop-up screen printing booths. Eric talks about a friend of his named Adam Peele, who helped teach him screen printing before a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo several years ago. The Who Built Me Series is sponsored by Foundation for the Carolinas.
If you've lived in Charlotte a long time, you know there are great areas, and areas you just drive through to get to other great areas. One of those was -- and we emphasize WAS -- a huge swath of land north of uptown, between Statesville Avenue and North Graham Street. The area was a grey, industrial collection of old brick factories just a little too close to the railroad tracks. Well guess what... just like South End has transformed from industrial to lively, now North End has too. We are specifically talking about Camp North End, which over the last 100 years has been a Ford factory, a bomb factory, and a warehouse for prescription drugs. And there's nothing we like talking about on Charlotte Real Estate Talk more than transformation. Varian Shrum .. the Community Manager.. is here to give us all the details on this hip new place north of uptown Charlotte.

This week we explore the opening of Heist's newest location, Barrel Arts, in North End. Diving into the history surrounding CAMP North End, the area's seemingly only other notable location, we'll discover how Charlotte helped create a new era in Cold War defense, while also diversifying local employment. We continue the discussion of diversifying the face of employment by highlighting a current tenant of CAMP North End, Black Tech Charlotte, which aims to bring minority inclusion into the entrepreneurial sphere. SignUp Genius was born out of the frustrations of a couple, Dan and Angel Rutledge, who were struggling with the same tasks we labor through every week as parents and volunteers – coordinating who does what and when. It was born in 2008 – the worst economic period we’ve had in at least 30 years – in a growing southern city not known for its entrepreneurial grit, Charlotte. Dan had been recruited to Charlotte to work with an entrepreneur (Michael Vadini) to build an entertainment company and a website design/implementation company. Angel is a former middle school English teacher and a mother of four who stepped in to help Dan in 2011. At that time, Dan just needed help with hiring and extra help on marketing. A little more than a year later, SignUp Genius was growing by over 40% per week during October 2012. Coming out of that period of strong growth, they realized they had something important to the world and valuable as a company. It wasn’t until 2016, however, when Dan and Angel, and Michael Vadini (Dan’s co-founder) realized it was important for them to raise capital. Given their rapid growth over the previous 8 years, they had plenty of firms lining up to make the investment. They had choices about what they were going to do and how they were going to do it. Great choices at the right time. Over the years, through all the challenges (and we discuss a few of them) and successes (we talk about those too), they have never deviated from their core mission – to empower people to change the world by making it simple to organize groups. Listen to this local success story with Angel. They had no accelerator program, no outside capital until nearly 10 years old, they were NOT in San Francisco and yet they’ve carved out a very nice niche for themselves. Learn when Angel finally told Dan, “you have to fire me from doing something.” Find out her favorite role, their view of the responsibilities of having investors? Listen to what she tells her daughters about their own lives and much more in this interview with Angel. Then come find Angel in the growing entrepreneur and investor scene here in Charlotte. You’ll come away impressed and thankful we have more and more people like Angel coming out to grow and share on a regular basis. Local notes and thoughts: Congratulations to SignUp Genius for celebrating their 10-Year Anniversary this week (October 2008 - October 2018). Thank you to Dan Roselli and his team at Packard Place for our first sponsorship. They have hosted more than 2 dozen of our interviews over the last couple of months and have offered one of their used Yeti’s for us to use with guests when we go offsite. In 1983, Gantt became the city’s first African American mayor, and served two consecutive terms. He has also served on the boards of numerous cultural, civic and business organizations. Remember, the next Creative Mornings Charlotte event will be held Friday, May 12 at Warehouse 242, and feature WFAE’s Nick De La Canal as the speaker on the global theme of serendipity.
