As the NFL Draft approaches, the Carolina Panthers can only hope to hit a second-round home run like they did with Muhsin Muhammad. The Panthers hold two high second-round picks — the 33rd and 39th overall — in the draft that starts April 25. In 1996, Muhammad was a promising wide receiver out of Michigan State that Carolina nabbed with the 43rd overall pick. “Moose,” as most everyone calls him, went on to play 14 NFL seasons, including 11 with Carolina, and was known for his physicality, great hands and knack for making the biggest plays in the biggest games, He still owns the Super Bowl record for longest touchdown catch, at 85 yards against New England in the 2003 postseason. Now 50 years old, Muhammad and his wife Christa have raised their six kids in the Charlotte area, and those kids have produced numerous college diplomas and athletic accolades. The Panthers, meanwhile, inducted Muhammad into the team's Hall of Honor in 2023, and his name is now displayed at the top of Bank of America Stadium. We met Muhammad at his office in Charlotte for his “Sports Legends” interview. He talked about shushing the crowd in Philly, his thoughts on the 2024 Panthers and Nick Saban's viral comments about Moose that are still making the rounds on social media a decade later. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Loumay Alesali, Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Dan Bernstein and Mark Grote opened their show by reacting to the Bears acquiring six-time Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen in a trade with the Chargers. Chicago will send a fourth-round pick back to Los Angeles in the deal. They also took a stroll down memory lane. After leaving the Bears in 2008, wideout Muhsin Muhammad famously told Sports Illustrated that Chicago is "where wide receivers go to die." On the heels of Chicago acquiring Allen, Grote explained why he believes Muhammad's characterization no longer applies to the Bears. Later, Bernstein explained that a contingent of fans who support Bears quarterback Justin Fields are taking to social media to push the narrative that Chicago will trade the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Embattled rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo shook off a pair of missed field goals to drill the game-winner from 38 yards out, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 17-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers in a wild and wacky NFC South showdown Monday night. Here's what we learned: 1. Going back to the start of preseason action, the second-round kicker has been anything but predictable -- generally not an attractive quality at a key position that averages an 84.5 percent success rate. On a night filled with questionable coaching choices, Dirk Koetter's decision to set up a long Aguayo field goal on third-and-9 with 3:38 remaining was among the most head-scratching. Panthers coach Ron Rivera bailed Koetter out shortly thereafter, showing irrational faith in his leaky defense by calling timeouts during Jameis Winston's ensuing two-minute drill that led to Aguayo's nail-biting game winner. The final kick of the night may have bought the uncuttable Aguayo a longer leash, but this is a "results-oriented business," as Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells once remarked of football's most unforgiving position. Aguayo's yips have placed Koetter and his coaching staff in a week-to-week roster conundrum. It's hard to imagine that scenario ever entered Jason Licht's mind when the general manager cited the way Aguayo is "wired" upon trading up in the second round to select the Florida State kicker. 3. Speaking of Olsen, the two-time Pro Bowl tight end spent the night running scot free through the second level of Tampa Bay's defense. Olsen had already generated a career-high in yards with 21 minutes remaining in the game. By the time the final whistle blew, he had joined Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad as the only players in franchise history to reach 180 receiving yards in a single game. Since the start of the 2014 season, Olsen has eight 100-yard performances to nine for perennial All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. No other NFL tight end has produced more than four such games over that span. Cat Crave Radio has returned!! What a week! The Carolina Panthers have officially begun their season in Spartanburg, SC at Wofford College. We were there to cover the beginning of training camp Like everyone with press credentials, we chased down every single interview we could get. There were lots of opportunities to speak to the players and we got the chance to talk to Chris Gamble one on one with no one else around giving us an exclusive that not even the big boys got. We also had a chance to speak to Ross Tucker of SI and Sirius Satellite Radio fame about the coming season and to pick his brain on our Panthers. Some of the players we spoke to included Steve Smith, Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, DeAngelo Williams, Ma’ake Kemoeatu among many others. Training camp is a great time of year and it appears, having seen the process from behind the scenes, that the members of the press bring up topics to numerous players keeping it going for a while. Early this week, one such topic got rolling and found a life of its own. We have a complete run down for you. This made for a very interesting segment. It’s all in the show. Give it a listen and feel free to comment below. Oh, yeah, one more thing…you can now subscribe to our show in iTunes! And one more thing…give us a follow over on Twitter. Thanks for listening! Enjoy!
