The Power of Priestcraft, Pages 152 to 162 of Four Crafts Priesthood versus Priestcraft To read along click here: https://at.tumblr.com/fundamentallymormon/the-power-of-priestcraft-pages-152-to-162-of-four/e5j0qkf5ewnv The Lord and the devil present two different plans for man's salvation. They might be classified under the headings of Priesthood and Priestcraft. Priesthood elevates to the worthy of the true and living God; priestcraft degrades to the slavery of the soul. Priesthood saves; priestcraft destroys. (Contributor 10:24) Since the devil does not have a genuine plan of his own, he tries to corrupt the Savior's plan. Everything good is perverted–changed slightly so that it is no longer the Lord's program. The imitation of the Gospel is often so close to the truth that it is easy for men to mistake it for the genuine article. George Q. Cannon describes the difference between the two plans: But men have seen priestcraft in the world, and they confound that with Priesthood; but I want you to understand that there is a wide distinction between Priesthood and priestcraft. Men who exercise priestcraft become wrong-doers and oppressors, and commit great sins under the guise of religion, while trying to appear in the eyes of the world as being in the service of God. But the Priesthood is not of that character. It is beneficent in its operations. It blesses, it upholds, it strengthens, it diffuses love, union, peace, and every Godlike quality among mankind. (Coll. Disc. 5:294)

From Persecuted to Persecutor, Part 4 of Chapter 6 of Holy priesthood volume 1 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=120 It has been said that those who have been persecuted will, when their turn comes, become persecutors. This has been said concerning us. “Oh,” it has been said, “you are now in the minority. It is all very well to plead for liberty and contend for the rights of man. But wait. If you ever get power, you who have been persecuted will turn round and persecute other people.” This has been cast against us as bearing out the history of the past. (George Q. Cannon, JD 22:179) As the Church has become more and more worldly–in both Christ’s day and in ours–two interesting phenomena have occurred: (1) it was no longer persecuted, and (2) it became a persecutor.
The Need for Persecution, Part 3 of Chapter 6 of Holy priesthood volume 1 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=120 For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity. (Eccles. 2:5) The worst forms of persecution seem to be the result of religious fanatics against other religious people–bringing judgment against the wicked, and purification and glory to the innocent. These sufferings prove to be a great benefit for the saints, since it is by trial that souls are purified and perfected. When we come to look at the works of God, and witness the manifestation of His power, we see that everything that is excellent, everything that is desirable, comes forth from the midst of much tribulation. Even the jewels of the earth, and the riches thereof–the minerals, the gold and silver for which men thirst, and for which they have been willing to sacrifice life–are brought forth out of what seems to us the agonies of nature. And so in regard to violent deaths such as our brethren have suffered. In passing through such a trial bravely, faithfully, and truly, they have become jewels in the hands of God, and will continue to progress throughout the endless ages of eternity. (George Q. Cannon, JD 25:280-81) Another reason the Lord allows tests and persecutions to come to those who bear the Priesthood is because it prevents the dross from joining the ranks of the faithful. Persecution screens out the weak. According to Brigham Young– (JD 18:359)
Podcast Introduction: Keep in mind that on January 4, 2021, Utah will enter its 125th year as a state in the union (1896-2021). This was no small accomplishment, as it took the Territory of Utah forty-seven years to be granted equal status among the previous forty-four states. When the deal was finally closed for Utah, perhaps no other individual was more responsible for this accomplishment than George Q. Cannon (1827-1901). In this podcast historian Ken Cannon discussing GQC, his early life, his building of Utah's largest 19th century media apparatus (newspapers, magazines and books), his years serving Utah in Washington, D.C., and how the Mormon patriarch closed the deal in making Utah the 46th state to join the union.Perhaps equally as important, and a bit more eye catching, are the related accomplishments of Cannon's three oldest sons, John Q., Abraham H. and Frank J.; all of whom played vital roles in Utah's last ten years toward statehood. One as polygamy stalwart in the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (Abraham), one as Utah's first senator, followed by becoming the most damaging anti-Mormon campaigner in the early 20th century (Frank), and finally, the oldest son (John), groomed to replace his father, but instead fell out of grace in a post Manifesto adulterous relationship that ended with the death of one of Mormonism's most promising young woman's leaders. As a Cannon family member, Ken Cannon—who is a decedent of three family lines—has taken an honest historical aim at GQC three oldest sons, offering a detailed and candid assessment of both their noteworthy accomplishments (both in Utah and in the nation's capital), as well as their solicitous and publically embarrassing actions. Actions that only scions of one of Mormonism most powerful leading families could have done, and to a lesser or greater degree, gotten away with.Cannon and Westwood also discuss Cannon's work at unlocking the 140 year mystery concerning the famous yet little understood photographs—possibly the most emblematic images regarding the federal response to Mormon polygamy—the C. R. Savage's photographs of prison uniform cladded Mormon polygamists, serving time in the Utah Territorial Prison while the venerable George Q. Cannon (dubbed "the Mormon premier") presided among them.
Concerning Utah's statehood story, the oft heard quote comes to mind, attributed to German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who said: “laws and sausage, if they are to be enjoyed, should never be watched made.” Lyman's book argues for the opposite: knowing the stories behind political actions are essential to a vibrant and strong democracy. Lyman's “sausage making” history reveals many significant historical insights useful to contemporary life in Utah. It is also a complex, elusive story, that has been largely untold until now. Perhaps no other historian knows as much, or can tell the story as well as Edward Leo Lyman. Like the story he is telling, it took him almost fifty years to fully understand the extent of this story. Enough years have passed (for many Utahns the history of the 1847 pioneers has always trumped Utah's statehood story), and enough new scholarship has been completed, to finally tell a complete “sausage making” story about Utah's elusive statehood quest.Podcast #1 of 4 -- Topics Discussed: Mormon pioneers settle on the Wasatch Front, establish a non-democratic, almost fully theocratic government, and they are anticipating the soon return of Jesus Christ. The first failed attempt at statehood. Federal officials along with California representatives in Washington, D.C., consider placing Utah (or the proposed state of Deseret) into a very large state of California. Utah would help California with a population requirement and California would aid Utah, eventually, in becoming a separate state. Brigham Young's and the Mormon's world view drives them to seek total political independence from the United States. Church leaders expect to enter the Union on their own terms. They propose a couple of times “the State of Deseret” during Brigham Young's life. There are all together seven attempts at statehood (1849 to 1896).What the birth of the Republican Party (1854) meant to the LDS Church, with the party's platform to eradicate the “Twin Relics of Barbarism: Slavery and Polygamy.” A failed attempt in 1872, Thomas Fitch, a Republican lobbyist working for the Mormon Church, proposed statehood with an anti-polygamist clause. Brigham Young agrees to it, hoping to see “how far they can go” with this disingenuous gambit. In the 1870s George Q. Cannon goes to Washington, D.C., serves as Utah's non-voting delegate to congress; spends over ten years there; he successfully fights off nearly two dozen anti-Utah/polygamy pieces of legislation. Cannon is so good at what he does that congress passes a law requiring that all territorial delegates must be law abiding (specifically not practicing polygamists) citizens. A failed attempt in 1887, President Grover Cleveland sent a trusted cabinet member to the Utah Territory, seeking LDS Church leaders' approval, with an anti-polygamist plank his administration would support, to allow statehood for Utah. US Congress establishes the Utah Commission, to oversee fair democratic elections in the Utah Territory; how federal marshals work in Utah; the Utah Commission applies an anti-polygamy oath to Utah voters; Utah polygamist are jailed and are politically disenfranchised. The deeply polarized worlds of Mormon and non-Mormons living in Utah is explained; the effects of ongoing millennial expectations by Mormons, and the call and want for some kind of heavenly intervention is discussed. Podcast Content for Part 2 of 4: Concerning Utah's statehood story, the oft heard quote comes to mind, attributed to German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who said: “laws and sausage, if they are to be enjoyed, should never be watched made.” Lyman's well written book argues for the opposite: knowing the stories behind political actions are essential to a vibrant and strong democracy. Lyman's “sausage making” history which spans over fifty year in 19th century Utah and the United States, reveals many significant historical insights useful to both modern Utahns and Americans. It is also a complex, elusive story, that has been largely untold until now.Podcast #2 of 4 - Topics Discussed Utah's Christian churches are closely connected with national Christian missionary and anti-Mormon efforts and organizations.Salt Lake Tribune feeds news reports to a broader national syndicated press; the nation's press is largely unified in its anti-polygamy coverage. George Q. Cannon's mastery of federal legislative and executive branch lobbying is described. Church leaders and territorial leaders support the LDS Church's First Presidency creating a “Committee for Statehood,” essentially a closed group made-up of the LDS Church First Presidency, tasked with quietly strategizing and negotiating, behind the scenes in Washington, D.C., for Utah statehood.Committee for Statehood work with and paid America's railroad lobbyists (including Leland Stanford of California); the lobby represented the largest more powerful industry in American society during the second half of the 19th century.Railroad lobbyists execute a nationwide public relations campaign, working with newspaper syndicates, powerful publishers and editors, paying them for a “more balanced” treatment in America's larger regional newspapers; it focuses on Utah's people, its industries and the territory's good faith efforts at becoming “Americans,” and thus qualifying for statehood. LDS Church leaders call for a complete public ban of speaking about polygamy; over the pulpit and especially in the church's General Conference (this is not entirely successful). Railroad, national mining and industry leaders, Wall Street, want Utah's statehood issue resolved, to aid in foreign and national investments and business expansion across the Intermountain West. Former Washington lobbyist and son of Brigham Young John W. Young, developed close ties with the national Democratic Party, and business and corporate leaders; however the Committee for Statehood see Young's expenses growing high, and his “returns” too few; instead, the Committee for Statehood turns to the national Republican Party, based on advice from the railroad lobby.Utah native son, Isaac Trumbo, who was a California lobbyist and involved in the Eureka, Utah Bullen Beck Mine, and various other Utah industries begins working—along with others including Alex Bodlem—in lobbying and persuading key national Republican leaders, concerning Utah's interests, as not so far from those held by national Republican Party. In the 4th quarter of the 19th century the Republican Party became less ideologically inclined, focusing instead on industry and business interests, pushing for protectionist tariffs in support of American commodities and industry. The Party turn incrementally away from being “America's moral police,” thus surrendering efforts at post-Civil War Reconstruction in the South, offering less Anti-Roman Catholic rhetoric, and fighting less for the eradication of Mormon polygamy. Utah 1880s and 1890s political landscape is described with the People's Party (largely the Mormon Church party) and the Liberal Party (largely non-Mormons and former Mormons' party).
Episode 178: Ghost Stories Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast, it’s our Halloween 2020 episode. Have you ever seen a ghost? Experienced energy from the unseen? Felt something you couldn’t see or had doors slam for no reason? The world is full of ghost stories. For Halloween I opened up the phone lines to have people call in and share their own ghost stories. Stay tuned for the call ins and get a little ghost story thrill to prepare you for Halloween…. I’ll start our spooky episode with this quote from George Q. Cannon - "There are places....where the influence or the presence of invisible spirits are very perceptibly felt...and that...evil influences or spirits...affect (us)..... I have come to the conclusion that if our eyes were open to see the spirit world around us, we should feel differently on the subject than we do; we would not be so unguarded and careless and so indifferent whether we had the spirit and power of God with us or not; but we would be continually watchful and prayerful to our Heavenly Father for his Holy Spirit and his holy angels to be around us.... With that warning in mind, let’s listen to the call ins: Listen to the audio to hear the call-in ghost stories. Our time is already up, but those stories should get the holiday “spirit” flowing. I’ll be honest, I’m a little more freaked out than I was before I heard the stories, but all I can say is, “May the Halloween spirit be with you and may it be a friendly one.” Join us in a few weeks for our November episodes which will highlight some great story gift ideas for the upcoming gift-giving season. Our first November episode will be a discussion with the author of Six and Spider Jungle, for the younger kids on your list ,and a lesson in how our differences make us stronger. You’ll also get a free download, so listen in. See you in two weeks, and Happy Halloween.

George Q. Cannon, editor of the Juvenile Instructor, wrote an editorial concerning the treatment of Native Americans by gold prospectors, senators, and the government at large. In his comments, he views this treatment as a fulfillment of Book of Mormon prophecy, but also as counsel on how the Saints needed to be more Christlike in their behavior towards peoples of other nations and cultures. Latter-day Judases, Part 2 of Chapter 9 of Judas Iscariot by Ogden Kraut. George Q. Cannon wrote an interesting historical item concerning the spirit of Cain, and Judas, which was manifest in the apostates who brought about the death of Joseph Smith. [93] During the days of which we write, it seemed as though the evil one and his hosts were making every effort to bring trouble upon Joseph. Apostates were combined together and appeared determined to destroy him. On one occasion in April, 1844, the City Marshal arrested one of this class for assaulting his brother in the latter’s own house. This brought out his companions, three of whom came down to Joseph’s office. Their names were Chauncey L. Higbee, Robert D. Foster and Charles Foster. The first two were bitter apostates. The latter was a brother of Robert D. Foster, and though he had never been in the Church, he drank into the spirit of murder and violence which they possessed and was one with them. Joseph was standing on the steps of his office, and Charles Foster drew a pistol and pointed it towards him, and threatened to shoot him. The police were directed to arrest him, and, while trying to do so, his brother and Higbee interfered, resisted the officers, and they were arrested also. They swore dreadful oaths, and Higbee and Charles Foster said they would shoot Joseph. They uttered many threats, and said they would consider themselves the favored of God for the privilege of shooting or ridding the world of such a tyrant as Joseph was.

THE FUNDAMENTALIST MORMON Part 4 on Fundamentally Mormon Kingdom of God The Old Testament Kingdom of God was a political power that governed the House of Israel. This concept was restored to Joseph Smith with the Gospel and established in 1843, separate from the organization of the Church in 1830. George Q. Cannon said: [20]We are asked, Is the Church of God and the Kingdom of God the same organization? and we are informed that some of the brethren hold that they are separate. This is the correct view to take. The Kingdom of God is a separate organization from the Church of God. (DHC 7:382) And B. H. Roberts said: It is proper for the reader to know that Joseph Smith, when speaking strictly, recognized a distinction between “the Church of Jesus Christ” and the “Kingdom of Cod” and not only a distinction but a separation of one from the other. The Kingdom of God according to his teaching is to be a political institution that shall hold sway over all the earth to which all other governments will be subordinate and by which they will be dominated. THE CHURCH TEST OATHS Permalink: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thekingdomofgodornothing/2016/06/10/the-church-test-oaths-of-the-lds-church-on-zions-redemption-radio-06-09-2016 Surely we ought not to be obliged to declare what we believe or do not believe as the price of suffrage. Our consciences are at least our own. (George Q. Cannon, Des. News, Feb. 21, 1890) A religious test oath is contrary to the rights of conscience as given by God. The conscience has its obligation. It is one of the principle rights and privileges of freedom. An article of Mormon faith is that “We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our conscience, and allow all men the same privilege.” It is the creed of the Latter-day Saints to follow their own conscience–secondly, to allow others the same privilege. A religious test oath is a contradiction to both. Politically such an oath is just as wrong. Such illegal test oaths were once used by the Government. During the debate on such practices with the Edmunds-Tucker Bill, Senator Vest made this statement: The whole spirit of this test-oath legislation is wrong; it is contrary to the principles and spirit of our republican institutions; and whenever the time comes in the Territories or States of this Union that test-oaths are necessary to preserve republican institutions then republicanism is at an end.” Zions Redemption Radio airs Monday through Friday starting at 11pm Utah Time. www.thekingdomofgodornothing.com Read along at https://www.facebook.com/notes/mark-lichtenwalter/compromise-and-concession-by-ogden-kraut/10157014275495344
Discussion of apostasy in our Dispensation. 8. REVELATION "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." (Amos 3:7) "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it." (Amos 8:11-12) "For he will give unto the faithful line upon line, precept upon precept; and I will try you and prove you herewith." (D. & C. 98:12) "Hence it needs revelation to assist us, and give us knowledge of the things of God. But if any revelations are given of God, they are universally opposed by the priests and Christendom at large; for they reveal their wickedness and abominations." (D.H.C. 4:588) "If anything should have been suggested by us, or any names mentioned, except by commandment, or thus saith the Lord, we do not consider it binding." (Joseph Smith, D.H.C., 3:295) "Communication never ceased when the people were faithful .... an unbroken stillness reigned between the heavens and the earth until the people again repented...." (George Q. Cannon, J.D. 22:265) "When new revelation ceases to be given officers cease to be called of God." (Orson Pratt's Works, p. 40) www.ogdenkraut.com Call in number 801-368-1490
