This week we learn about preparing for the spiritual harvest and working together to bring others to Christ. It's a reminder that sharing the gospel brings joy, blessings, and the opportunity to make a real difference.I am called to be a witness of Jesus Christ.Whether or not you have a formal calling as a missionary, you can be a witness of Jesus Christ “at all times, and in all things, and in all places”If I build my life on the Savior's gospel, I will not fall.I should focus more on the things of God than the things of the earth.Parley P. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Of course, we always want to increase our gospel knowledge, but God has never hesitated to call upon the “unlearned” to preach His gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 35:13). In fact, He invites all of us, “Open your mouth to declare my gospel” (Doctrine and Covenants 30:5).

Celebrate Easter, and get something more out of it this year by getting the newly released audiobook version of my book the Easter Connection, available at DeseretBook.com. This book will help you think through Christ's suffering in a different way and see how He helps you in a different way. It doesn't cost much and will bless your life and enhance your Easter celebration. Consider staring to listen to it on Holy Thursday.Next week we will have a video every day that helps us celebrate Christ during Holy Week.Consider joining us on our Palm Sunday walk. It will be held on Palm Sunday (April 13), at 4 pm. It will begin on the Murdock Canal Trail, at the Lindon View Trailhead (330 N. 780, Lindon). You may want to come early to find parking. Additional parking can be found at the church nearby (325 Canal Drive, Lindon). Some palm fronds will be provided, but there will not be enough for everyone. Julianne Muhlestein and Andrew Skinner will lead and teach at this event. In this episode Kerry and Susan Easton Black go through a series of revelations aimed at new converts of the Church. They discuss who these people are, helping them and their stories come to life so that we can understand more from the revelations themselves. The focus is on the people and the context, with the hope that each person will take that context and dive into the scriptures armed with the ability to draw even more out of them. They talk about the things that helped these converts either stay strong or stray, and lessons we can learn from that. They explore the lives and conversions of men like David Whitmer, Peter Whitmer, Parley P. Pratt, William McLellan, Thomas B Marsh, Orson Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, and others. They talk about the consequences those who strayed had in the suffering of others, and lessons we can learn from that. They also discuss early conferences, which is wonderful timing since we are experiencing General Conference right now. We are grateful for our generous donors who make the podcast possible, and for our executive producer B. Fisher, and for Launchpad Consulting Studios for producing the podcast, and for Rich Nicholls who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

Section 30 - Historical Background: Following the second conference of the Church at Fayette, the Lord provided revelations to several new converts who were anxious to know what God would have them do. This revelation was to three of the Whitmer brothers, David, Peter Jr. and John. Recap: David Whitmer, one of the three witnesses, is admonished for fearing man more than God and for not giving heed to the Spirit. Therefore he is to remain home and ponder upon his situation. Peter is called on a mission to the Lamanites with Oliver Cowdery, who will be the senior in the companionship. John was called on a mission to declare the gospel within the area and was counselled not to fear man. Section 31 - Historical Background: Thomas B Marsh was a recent convert from Massachusetts who was baptized in August 1830 by David Whitmer. In September he attended the conference in Fayette and received this personal revelation from Joseph. Recap: The Lord is pleased with the dedication of Thomas B Marsh and he is promised blessings for him and his family. He is called on a mission to people whose hearts will be opened by God. Branches of the church will be established by Thomas. He is not assigned to a specific area but is to follow the Spirit where to go and preach. Section 32 - Historical Background: Parley P Pratt was a former minister who read the Book of Mormon and knew it was true. He was baptized in early September, 1830. He immediately went to his brother Orson who immediately accepted the gospel. Within a month Parley received this revelation along with Ziba Peterson. Recap: Parley was called on a mission to the Lamanites along with Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer. Ziba Peterson was also called to join them. They are reassured that God will be in their midst. Section 33 - Historical Background: Ezra Thayre and Northrop Sweet were mediocre members and lacked in zeal, yet asked for this revelation pertaining to their purpose. Recap: Ezra and Northrop are called to preach. The Lord encourages them go forth and open their mouths. Faith, repentance, baptism by water and fire constitutes the rock of the restored church. They are to use the Book of Mormon as their manual. Section 34 - Historical Background: At the age of 19, Orson Pratt was introduced to the gospel by his brother Parley. He immediately embraced the doctrine and was baptized. He traveled to Fayette to meet the Prophet Joseph and received this revelation. Recap: Christ is a light which the wicked don't comprehend. Orson is called to preach to the wicked before Christ comes again, which will be quickly. Section 35 - Historical Background: Sidney Rigdon was a Baptist minister who became discouraged and moved to the Campbellite church. He was introduced to the Book of Mormon and after 2 weeks was baptized. After meeting Joseph he received this personal revelation, including the commandment to be Joseph's scribe. As a result of Sidney's fulfillment of this revelation, we have much of the recorded Doctrine and Covenants. Recap: Sidney Rigdon, like John the Baptist, has prepared the way for the Lord. God calls upon the weak and unlearned to respond to His call. The Lord testifies to Sidney of the prophetic calling of Joseph. Sidney is to watch over Joseph and support him. He is commanded to be Joseph's scribe and forsake him not. Section 36 - Historical Background: Edward Partridge arrived in Fayette with Sidney Rigdon and wanted to meet Joseph to decide for himself if he was a prophet. When Sidney introduced him the spirit immediately confirmed to Edward that Joseph was indeed a prophet of God. Edward desired immediate baptism but Joseph needed rest and baptized him the following day. Sidney asked Joseph for the Lord's guidance and the following revelation was given for Edward (see Section 35 for Sidney's revelation). Recap: Sidney Rigdon is instructed to lay hands upon Edward and confirm him a member and give him the gift of the Holy Ghost. Edward is then called to preach the Gospel, as are all those who desire to be sent forth with a singleness of heart.

Ninety Five Thesis Topics 6-10 6. PERSONAL TESTIMONY the time is coming when we will be mixed up in these now peaceful valleys to the extent that it will be difficult to tell the face of a saint from the face of an enemy against the people of God. “Then is the time to look out for the great sieve, for there will be a great sifting time, and many will fall. “For I say unto you there is a test, a Test, A TEST coming.” (J. Golden Kimball, p. 364) 7. PERSONAL WITNESSES It is the privilege of every Elder to speak of the things of God; and could we all come together with one heart and one mind in perfect faith the veil might as well be rent today as next week or any other time ….” Joseph Smith (T.P.J.S. p. 9) 8. REVELATION “When new revelation ceases to be given officers cease to be called of God.” (Orson Pratt's Works, p. 40) 9. A PECULIAR PEOPLE “When the children of Israel were chosen with Moses at their head, they were to be a peculiar people, among whom God should place His name;…” Joseph Smith (T.P.J.S., p. 252) 10. FASHIONS “There was a time when we could walk up and down the streets and tell by the very countenances of men whether they were Latter-day Saints, or not; but can you do it now? You can not, unless you have greater discernment and more of the Spirit and power of God than I have. Why? Because many are trying as hard as they can to transform themselves into the very shape, character, and spirit of the world. Elders in Israel, young men, mothers and daughters in Israel are conforming to the world's fashions, until their very countenances indicate its spirit and character. This course is to the shame and disgrace of those who are so unwise.” (Joseph F. Smith, J.D. 11:310)

A CRITICAL TIME FOR THE SAINTS, Part 1 of Chapter 5 of The Church and The Gospel    Pages 47 to 57   1886 to 1889   Leading up to 1886   Since the time of Joseph Smith's first vision in 1820, the powers of the adversary have intensified against the restored Gospel. Ministers have spewed out their religious poison against it; members of the media have written lies in order to sell more publications; and the government has passed laws and more laws to “exterminate the Mormons.”   The most controversial doctrine and practice that has caused the greatest furor has been plural marriage. The LDS Church officially accepted plural marriage as a tenet of their faith in 1852. On that occasion Orson Pratt delivered the first public sermon on the subject, appropriately entitled “Celestial Marriage.” He began by saying:   It is quite unexpected to me, brethren and sisters, to be called upon to address you this forenoon; and still more so, to address you upon the principle which has been named, namely, a plurality of wives. (JD 1:53)   However, he was up to the job, and his powerful sermon covered over 12 written pages in the Journal of Discourses. It stands today as one of the finest speeches upon that subject. Two excerpts are included here:

PLURAL MARRIAGE, Part 2 of Chapter 12 of The Church and The Gospel  Pages 179 to 186 Because the revelation was received in 1843, the command to live that principle also came with it. Many men such as Brigham Young, John Taylor, Orson Pratt, William Clayton, Heber C. Kimball, and many others were commanded to obey it. Some men, however, such as William Law (Joseph's second counselor), Stake President William Marks, and High Councilmen Leonard Soby and Austin Cowles, rejected the revelation. This division began a split in the Church which has continued ever since. Men who opposed the revelation set up a printing establishment in Nauvoo with the intent to expose the plural marriage doctrine. The first and only edition was published as The Nauvoo Expositor on May 10, 1844, and it referred to the revelation on the “plurality of wives, for time and eternity.” Before the Prophet Joseph was killed, he predicted that his death would not end the persecutions that would come from the Saints living plural marriage: It is thought by some that our enemies would be satisfied with my destruction; but I tell you that as soon as they have shed my blood, they will thirst for the blood of every man in whose heart dwells a single spark of the spirit of the fulness of the gospel . . . . It is not only to destroy me but every man and woman who dares believe the doctrines that God hath inspired me to teach to this generation. (“Plural Marriages as Taught by Joseph Smith,” Helen Mar Whitney, p. 19; as Lundwall quoted in Fate of the Persecutors. . . , p. 144)

Shortly after the Nauvoo Saints voted on August 8, 1844 to sustain the Twelve Apostles as the new leaders of Church, Sidney Rigdon was excommunicated (for reasons we will discuss in this episode). Then for more than three years, between 1844 and 1847, Brigham Young and the Twelve led the Church as a group of equals. Together they oversaw the completion of the Nauvoo temple and organized an exodus out of the United States.  Yet after leading a vanguard company to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, Brigham Young became concerned about the Twelve collectively leading the Church and became persuaded (for reasons we will discuss) that it was time to reorganize the First Presidency. But his proposal was not uncontested by the Twelve. And so, in a spirited series of debates, with Orson Pratt leading the opposition, Brigham Young ultimately persuaded the majority of the Twelve to reestablish the First Presidency, which officially took place on 27 December 1847 at the Kanesville Tabernacle in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In this episode of Church History Matters, we dig into the intriguing details of all of this.  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

KEYS OF THE MYSTERIES, Part 2 of Chapter 2 of The Church and The Gospel    Pages 19 to 25 Eternal Progression We have the blessing of learning and progressing in knowledge not only in this life but also in the next-and for all eternity. Said Brigham Young: Those persons who strive to gain eternal life, gain that which will produce the increase their hearts will be satisfied with. Nothing less than the privilege of increasing eternally, in every sense of the word, can satisfy the immortal spirits. (JD 1:350) And again: . . . if we are striving with all the powers and faculties God has given us to improve upon our talents, to prepare ourselves to dwell in eternal life, and the grave receives our bodies while we are thus engaged, with what disposition will our spirits enter their next state? They will be still striving to do the things of God, only in a much greater degree-learning, increasing, growing in grace and in the knowledge of the truth. (JD 7:333) Furthermore, President Young taught that if we do not increase in knowledge, we are bound to retrogress: . . . there is no such thing as principle, power, wisdom, knowledge, life, position, or anything that can be imagined, that remains stationary-they must increase or decrease. To me, life is increase; death is the opposite. (JD 1:350; also Contributor 5:22) A few scholars have promoted the concept that it was possible for souls to reach a point where they knew everything and there would be an end to gaining knowledge. A dispute arose over this doctrine between Brigham Young and Orson Pratt in 1852.

Did you know that the first time the story of Joseph Smith's First Vision was ever printed was in a pamphlet written by apostle Orson Pratt and published in Scotland while Pratt was on a mission there in 1840? Intriguingly, Pratt's language from this pamphlet was used by Joseph Smith himself two years later, in 1842, when writing the story of his First Vision for a non-Latter-day Saint newspaper editor named John Wentworth. Pratt's pamphlet also heavily influenced another insightful telling of Joseph's vision written by his fellow apostle Orson Hyde which was published in Germany in 1842. In today's episode we dive into all three of these accounts.

THE BLESSING OF MORTALITY, Chapter 10 of Reincarnation  Pages 83 to 86 The Sons of God shouted for joy, because there was a beautiful habitation being built, so that they could get tabernacles, and dwell thereon; they expected the time-they looked forward to the period; and it was joyful to them to reflect, . . . (Orson Pratt, JD 1:56) Mortality is an important stepping stone along the pathway to everlasting and eternal life. It is not like a stage play with repeat performances. It is progressive, not repetitive. Those supporting a belief in reincarnation state that they must continually discard their bodies as they are born and reborn over and over again. They consider the mortal body as a burdensome thing that needs to be cast away like an old coat. Being born again is a signal that they failed in a previous life and so they must get another body until they make the grade. On the other hand, Mormon gospel teaches us that the body is a temple to be respected, revered, and treated as a delicate and holy gift from God-as it is the only mortal body we'll ever have. It is to be preserved and sanctified so that it can be reclaimed in the resurrection as an acceptable home for the spirit for all eternity. LEARNING BY EXPERIENCE, Chapter 6 of Reincarnation  Pages 55 to 61 It was called their first estate. They were agents there just as much as you and I are here. They could obey the law that was given to them, or they could disobey that law. (Orson Pratt, JD 19:316) Experience is the ability to participate, to perceive, to understand, and to gain knowledge by living through certain events. Merely being alive or conscious is the basis of gaining experience. Because a person can learn from these experiences, he is better qualified to make choices. Simply being conscious and aware of events happening around him, or to him, will give an individual positive or negative experience. Likewise, spirits in the Spirit World go through a series of events giving them experience. Some choose to do good, while others select evil, i.e.: God gave his children their free agency even in the spirit world, by which the individual spirits had the privilege, just as men have here, of choosing the good and rejecting the evil, or partaking of the evil to suffer the consequences of their sins. Because of this, some even there were more faithful than others in keeping the commandments of the Lord. (Doc. of Sal., Jos. Fldg. Smith, 1:58) Read the rest of this chapter: https://at.tumblr.com/fundamentallymormon/learning-by-experience-chapter-6-of-reincarnation/68osvkqws8y0 Read this book: http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=181 Read more books on Restoration Theology: http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=30

What a fun grouping of topics! We do a relatively long deep-dive into the history of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has dealt with organic evolution and how the stance has changed over time. Of course, the Book of Mormon is predicated on eugenics, as is the history of Utah, so we also include this more controversial subject as it is related. Then we dive into Bruce R. McConkie's Millennial Messiah where he continues to harp on his favorite topic, the end times. Turns out the book title is very revealing of the subject matter. VOICES OF OPPOSITION,  Chapter 13 of Michael Adam on the Adam God Doctrine  Pages 145 to 160 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. It appears that the controversy over the true God is as much an issue in our dispensation as it was in the days of Moses, Elijah, or Christ. Thus, President Brigham Young had difficulty in teaching the true identity of God to the Saints. Since many members refused to accept the Adam-God doctrine, it was never firmly established as a tenet of the Church. Although Brigham Young was the president, prophet, seer and revelator to the Church, he met continual rebellion against this doctrine–even from some of his own apostles. The most prominent opponent, at least for a while, was Apostle Orson Pratt. Elder Samuel Richards wrote: Evening with the Regency in the upper room of the President's office, examining the spelling for the new books in the D. Alphabet. A very serious conversation took place between President B. Young and Orson Pratt upon doctrine. O. P. was directly opposed to the President's views and very freely expressed his entire disbelief in them after being told by the President that things were so and so in the name of the Lord. He was firm in the position that the President's word in the name of the Lord, was not the word of the Lord to him. The President did not believe that Orson Pratt would ever be Adam, to learn by experience the facts discussed, but that every person in the room would be if they lived faithful. (History of Samuel W. Richards, March 11, 1856, p. 15)

LATTER-DAY SINNERS, Chapter 16 of United Order    http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=212   Pages 233 to 251   The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. (Isa. 24:5-6) Two principal sins are related to wealth–the love of money (1 Tim.6:10) and the inequality of riches (D. & C. 49:20). For the past 150 years the Saints have been guilty of both evils. The question now arises what happened to cause this failure. Orson Pratt contended that the Saints were guilty of these sins over a century ago: Anything short of a perfect equality in temporal things is a sin; hence, the Lord says, “It is not given that one man should possess that which is above another, wherefore, the world lieth in sin.” Is this law now enforced upon the Saints? Do they have all things in common? Do they all possess the same? No; they have not become righteous enough to obey this law. Covetousness has taken such deep root in their hearts, through the wicked tradition of their Gentile fathers, that this law remains unheeded. (The Seer, O. Pratt, p. 291)

Parley P. Pratt had been a member of the Church for about a month when he was called “into the wilderness” to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 32:2). Thomas B. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” (Doctrine and Covenants 31:3). Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Perhaps this timing was all of necessity—in the fall of 1830, no one had been a member of the Church for more than six months. But there’s also a lesson in this pattern for us today: if you know enough to accept the restored gospel by baptism, you know enough to share it with others. Of course we always want to increase our gospel knowledge, but God has never hesitated to call upon the “unlearned” to preach His gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 35:13). In fact, He invites all of us, “Open your mouth to declare my gospel” (Doctrine and Covenants 30:5). And we do that best not through our own wisdom and experience but “by the power of [the] Spirit” (Doctrine and Covenants 35:13).

Among men and among Gods, she holds a rightful place and an equal position, even to holding and sharing the blessings and rights of the Holy Priesthood–but she is not to be worshipped. The greatest revelations and manifestations assuring us of a mother in heaven were revealed in this last dispensation; however, none of these instructed us to pray to her or to worship her, as Orson Pratt clearly explained: But if we have a heavenly Mother as well as a heavenly Father, is it not right that we should worship [88] the Mother of our spirits as well as the Father? No; for the Father of our spirits is at the head of His household, and His wives and children are required to yield the most perfect obedience to their great Head. It is lawful for the children to worship the King of Heaven, but not the “Queen of Heaven.” The children of Israel were severely reproved for making offerings to the “Queen of Heaven.” Although she is highly exalted and honored as the beloved bride of the great King, yet the children, so far as we are informed, have never been commanded to pray to her or worship her. Jesus prayed to His Father, and taught His disciples to do likewise; but we are nowhere taught that Jesus prayed to His heavenly Mother: neither did he pray to the Holy Ghost as his Father. What a great blessing to have a “family unit to continue everlastingly!” What sacrifice or service would a man be willing to offer to receive such a blessing? The Lord does place a price on blessings, and this one is no exception. For a man to just go into a temple and have his wife sealed to him is not enough to assure their eternal marriage. It is only part of that requirement. He is instructed in the ceremony itself to continue in righteousness in order to receive that blessing: . . . the President, then, proceeds to ask the following question of the man: “Do you, brother (calling him by name), take sister (calling the bride by her name), by the right hand to receive her unto yourself to be your lawful and wedded wife, and you to be her lawful and wedded husband for time and for all eternity, with a covenant and promise, on your part, that you will fulfill all the laws, rites, and ordinances, pertaining to this holy matrimony, in the new and everlasting covenant, doing this in the presence of God, angels, and these witnesses of your own free will and choice? (Ex. 3:5)   Thus, the children of Israel came to Mt. Sinai because God wanted to teach them a new way of life. God had made a promise to their forefathers, and now He was going to keep it. He said, “I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Ex. 20:2), because of the “covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.” (Ex. 2:24) Orson Pratt tells the story of their arrival at the mountain:   When the people of God were encamped at the foot of Mount Sinai, the Lord said unto them, “If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.” “And all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.” (Ex. 19:5, 6, 8) Three days after the people made this covenant, the Lord came down upon the mount in their sight, with thunderings, and lightnings, and with a great sound of a trumpet, and with a cloud, and fire, and thick smoke, while the whole mount trembled and shook to its very centre, under His Almighty power. With a loud voice He uttered in the ears of all Israel the “Ten Commandments.” “And when the people saw it, they removed and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we [70] die.” (Ex. 20:18, 19) (Masterful Discourses of Orson Pratt, p. 158)     http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=139

1886 to 1889: A CRITICAL TIME FOR THE SAINTS, Chapter 5 of The Church and the Priesthood by Ogden Kraut   Leading up to 1886   Since the time of Joseph Smith’s first vision in 1820, the powers of the adversary have intensified against the restored Gospel. Two excerpts are included here:   [48]        In reply we will show you that it is incorporated as a part of our religion, and necessary for our exaltation to the fulness of the Lord’s glory in the eternal world. Would you like to know the reasons? Before we get through, we will endeavour to tell you why we consider it an essential doctrine to glory and exaltation, to our fulness of happiness in the world to come. (JD 1:54)

GATHERING ISRAEL, Chapter 8 of The Church and The Gospel by Ogden Kraut  http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/09/gathering-israel-chapter-8-of-church.html?m=1 Gathering Through the Centuries From the pre-existence, throughout mortality, and into the eternities to come, spirits and mortals have been attracted and gathered by truth or by error. Habitations and principles are being acquired by selection. In making a multitude of choices throughout the years, we become products of our own expressive desires and gather together.. The success or failure of the Gospel in any age has been dependent upon the unity of God’s people. It is for this reason they have always been commanded to gather. It has been a strict commandment that the children of God should gather to Zion-that they might be worthy of eventually gathering in the Zion of heaven. The person who becomes accustomed to a lifetime in saloons, gambling dens, and houses of ill repute, would feel disturbed and uneasy in a church. Likewise a faithful and devoted individual would feel the same uneasiness and distress in a saloon or gambling den. That gradual selection and attraction of people is inherent and eternal in its nature. Their eternal destiny is dependent upon who and what they are gathered to. [Examples of the gathering of God’s people are found in every dispensation of the Gospel. Wherever there is a record of the people of God, there is a record of their gathering together, and all of the prophets have foretold of a last great gathering of Israel. The doctrine of the gathering of the people of God, including Israel, is one so clearly predicted by the inspired writers, that it seems almost superfluous to refer to the numerous passages relating to it. (Orson Pratt’s Works, p. 9)

(Brigham Young, J.D. 12:163) It is clearly evident from the scriptures that only the Saints who are gathered will be prepared for the Second Coming of the Savior. If the Saints are not gathered, they will not be prepared and therefore must suffer the consequences. Many of the early apostles placed the gathering of the Saints in conjunction with the coming of the Savior. Consider the statements of these inspired apostles. Strangers may inquire, what has this great gathering to do with preparing the way before the coming of his Son? Could you not all remain scattered abroad among the nations and be prepared just as well? I answer, that if God had commanded us to remain among the nations in our scattered condition, that would have been right, and acceptable before him; but on the other hand, if God has spoken, as we declare that he has, and his voice has been heard, and messengers have been called and sent forth by divine command, and revelation has been given, not only for the people to obey the gospel but also to gather out and assemble themselves in one, then we could not be prepared for his coming without obeying the divine command. THE PERPETUAL EMIGRATION FUND, Pages 69-74 of Chapter 7 of The Gathering of Israel by Ogden Kraut    Our President said he would be glad to have some six discourses, each six hours long, preached to the people upon the subject of doing their duty unto others in regard to this Fund. (Orson Pratt, J.D. 2:55) In 1849 President Brigham Young established a Perpetual Emigration Fund which was a financial company offering aid to those seeking to gather to Utah. Many of the Saints in foreign lands were very poor, if not in financial bondage, yet they had the desire to gather with the Saints in Zion. The Fund would loan them the money to emigrate to Utah, after which they were to repay that loan as soon as they could. This idea probably was conceived back in the days of Nauvoo. Apostle George A. Smith said: While the Saints were surrounded by their enemies on every hand in illinois, they entered into a solemn covenant within the walls of the Temple at Nauvoo that they would exert themselves to the extent of their influence and property to aid every Latter-day Saint that desired to gather to the mountains. This covenant they did not forget, and the very moment they began to gather a little surplus they commenced to use it to aid their brethren and sisters left behind. At first they purchased, in the East, cattle and wagons necessary to bring the emigrants here; but in a few years they raised cattle here, and sent their teams to the Missouri river year af-[70]ter year, sometimes two hundred and sometimes three hundred, and they have sent as many as five hundred teams, for several successive seasons…. The doctrine of pre-existence, or pre-mortal life, is generally not believed in by most of the modern Christian churches that have been spawned in our generation. Yet, most of the world’s population believe in some form of pre-existence. Not until the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Prophet Joseph Smith did a clear and important part of this doctrine become understood. It is clearly taught in the Bible, yet most of our modern ministers have overlooked it. It is so important to our understanding of the Gospel, that it would be like trying to fly a plane with only some of the parts. Contained in this compilation are many of the quotations of men who clarified various aspects of the doctrine of pre-existence. Not all the available quotations are included, neither is the entire sermon from which these quotes are taken. The information is arranged according to subject matter, and since they tell a fairly complete story themselves, the author has made only preliminary statements preceding each chapter, and added an introduction and conclusion to the entire publication. Much of the material used is taken from Orson Pratt, who spoke and wrote more on that subject than any other person in Church history–even much more than was said by President Brigham Young.   watch the Video teaching at www.youtube.com/user/Godismycompass or at www.facebook.com/Lazurus197

Last year, I interviewed Dr. Paul Reeve at the University of Utah on his book Religion of a Different Color.  This is a first-time release on our Youtube channel, but a re-release on audio of our interview last year with Paul Reeve discussing an amazing event with apostle Orson Pratt.  You may have heard of his more famous brother Parley P. Pratt.  Anyway, Orson was not only opposed to Utah legalizing slavery in Utah, but supported black voting rights before the Civil War.  Listen to Paul Reeve describe these events https://youtu.be/t1n0o_O5P60 Matt:  We know that Pratt spoke the day before and they are in a heated debate, so how does Pratt push back?  The minutes of the legislature tell us that that afternoon of February 5th, after Brigham Young has given this very strong speech, there are two bills that are introduced that are just innocuous bills, like who cares?  It's the Cedar City and Fillmore municipal bills where they're just approving them as legal municipal entities, but within the bills are the voting rights for Fillmore and Cedar City.  Who gets to vote in Fillmore and Cedar City?  They stipulate that white men over 21 get to vote, and that's par for the course for the nation in 1852. Pratt votes against both of those bills and the minutes tell us that he does so because they don't allow black men to vote and I believe that's his effort at again, pushing back against Brigham Young, so Brigham Young got to have his say in the morning and this is Pratt's way of responding.  I'm going to vote against these two municipal bills to make my point that I believe black men should be allowed to vote in Utah Territory. GT:  To me that is absolutely astonishing because this is the year 1852.  This is pre-Civil War. Paul:  That's right. GT:  I mean how did Pratt fit in with the rest of America as far as a black man should be allowed to vote because I can't imagine that's a popular position? Paul:  It's really not.  I mean there are a few people who are arguing for this, you know radical abolitionists but like I said this is just a radical minority.  To stake out that kind of position, you would be branded as a radical minority, marginalized from the mainstream.  It really is kind of a distinct position and for him to be making it in Utah Territory really is quite unique for 1852.  Not many are advocating for black suffrage in 1852. When Brigham Young made his speech in 1852 to the Utah Legislature where he declared blacks had no right to the priesthood, and Paul says this was likely a reaction to Pratt's speech.  This is part 5 of a 7 part series with Paul.  Check out part 1, as well as our other interviews!   Orson Pratt was against slavery in Utah, and for black voting rights in 1852! Following Elijah Ables' Canadian mission, he returned for a short time to Nauvoo where he helped Joseph Smith escape from a mob from Missouri.  Then he went to Ohio and encountered more Trouble in Cincinnati!  Russell Stevenson continues our focus on #BlackHistoryMonth, and discusses some of the race riots and other difficulties Elijah Ables encountered in Ohio. https://youtu.be/UKPYgDJnKNo Russell:  In about 1842, or it might have even been the fall of 1841, there had been a massive race riot break out in Cincinnati between local white workers and the African-American community.  It was quite violent.  Many prominent abolitionists found themselves under fire.  Their homes, their offices, their businesses were all targeted for mob attack, and it's reasonable to suppose that Rees E. Price would have found under attack as well. So the fact that Elijah could navigate these white spaces, it tells you he had the skill to be in both worlds.  And yet, in spite of this ability, in spite of this comfortability with white spaces, we know that in 1843, I speculate due to some of these heightened tensions that had developed due to this race riot, that locally, three apostles:  Heber C. Kimball, Lorenzo Snow, and Orson Pratt, they banned Elijah from preaching to people not of African ancestry. GT:  Ok, so approximately what year was that? Russell:  Not approximately, it was 1843. GT:  1843, so he had some restrictions placed on him. Russell:  Yes.  I can't emphasize enough, though, it was not a priesthood restriction.  They had the opportunity.  If they wanted to take the priesthood from Elijah at that time, they could have.  That was the perfect opportunity to do so.  They did not.  In the minutes that tell us about this episode, he is explicitly identified as a Seventy and there is no comment made about him losing priesthood, and two years later, there is a newspaper article again referring to Elijah's workings in that branch where he is also referred to as a Seventy. Russell also talks about speculation Elijah may have helped with the Underground Railroad to free blacks from slavery! Russell:  Now did that lead to some sort of collaboration in helping with the Underground Railroad?  That's a very interesting speculation.  It also goes beyond the evidence.  Trust me, I would love to know that Elijah played an active role in assisting with the Underground Railroad.  We just don't know that. Don't forget to learn more about Elijah's Canadian mission, and his work on the Kirtland Temple.  Check out our conversation….. [paypal-donation]

You've probably heard lots of ghost stories, Ouija boards, and other supernatural phenomenon.  I was surprised to hear Dr. Richard Bennett, a BYU professor of Church History tell us that Spiritualism, the idea of communing with the dead, may have had some impact on the LDS endowment.  Some quotes from Dr. Bennett: https://youtu.be/JIYxSSBpjLY Spiritualism, the practice of communing with the dead, adulterated today by Ouija boards and things like this and telekinesis and paranormal, but Spiritualism is well-known in American history as flowering after the Civil War with so many dead and lost and the great desire of many families to know what happened to their sons or their fathers or their brothers. ... In the 1870s there's a lot of comment by general authorities, leaders of the church, particularly Orson Pratt about this is a counterfeit, but it has its place.  We understand why people are seeking the dead.  Was that a factor in the beginning of endowments for the dead for the church in 1877?  I claim that it may have been one of the factors to begin to address how we really think about them.  There is redemption for the dead but it's not that way.  So was it a factor?  I argue that it probably was one of the factors. We also talked about the start of the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper! There were a small number of astute, intellectual Latter-day Saints who broke with Brigham Young in the 1870s, who thought they knew the gospel a little bit better than Brigham Young did.  But they thought that they knew economics better than Brigham Young did and they broke with the church over that.  The Salt Lake Tribune starts with the Godbeite movement which was very negative,of course against the church.  It still tends to be a little bit on that side, but that's its history. There's also a discussion about the revelation that preceded the Manifesto.  Check it out! https://gospeltangents.com/shop/transcripts/ouija-boards-spiritualism-the-manifesto-and-endowments-for-the-dead/

Here, according to Joseph Smith, he built an altar and offered sacrifice after he and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden. Here, too, just before he died, Adam called together his righteous posterity, blessed them, and foretold what would happen to mankind for the next six thousand years. At the beginning of the Millennium, Adam will once again appear at the Valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman to participate in the transferring of keys and Priesthood functions. Thus, this sacred place is the site of both the beginning and ending of the telestial order of this world. Orson Pratt gives the following brief definition of the term “Adam-ondi-Ahman”: It means the place where Adam dwelt. “Ahman” signifies God. The whole term means Valley of God, where Adam dwelt. Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Orson Pratt, at Fayette, New York, 4 November 1830 (see History of the Church, 1:127–28). Brother Pratt was nineteen years old at the time. He had been converted and baptized when he first heard the preaching of the restored gospel by his older brother, Parley P. Pratt, six weeks before. This revelation was received in the Peter Whitmer, Sr., home.
