Chris & Gary join us for Episode 4! Chris Gethard & Gary Gulman, both hilarious and talented comedians/actors/authors sit down with Marlon to discuss what life has been like since the release of their own critically acclaimed HBO Original Comedy Specials, exclusively focusing on their own mental health journey: Chris Gethard- Career Suicide (2017) Gary Gulman- The Great Depresh (2019)
Comedian/Author Gary Gulman and Jay compare their latchkey childhoods with memories of being alone, watching endless TV and worrying about whether the real world would have more channels. We also talk about needing to be funny, the excitement of being on a soundstage for the first time, how one of us was built to play basketball, and how we owe our parents nothing but do a million things for them anyway.Bio: Gary Lewis Weston Gulman is a comedian's comedian. His legendary routine about State Abbreviations went viral on Conan a few years ago. His special The Great Depresh about his bout with severe depression broke new ground comedy and his new special “Born on Third” and his book “Misfit” look back on his childhood as a very poor Jew in the Boston area. Gary lives in New York with his wife Sade (not that one) and plays basketball everywhere he goes.
In this episode, Wynne Leon and Vicki Atkinson are talking with Edgerton award winning playwright, musician, and writer Jack Canfora. Talking with Jack is like attending a master class on creativity. In fact, our conversation with Jack is so rich with both writing practices and nuggets about authors and artists that we've split it into two episodes. In this first episode, we talk with Jack about depression and creative expression. He adds some fantastic and funny insight from comedian, Gary Gulman (HBO special: The Great Depresh). Jack also reveals a couple of his brilliant ways to experiment when he's hit a creative lull. His answer about whether he writes long-hand will have you giggling right along with Vicki and me. He tells us what is hard to teach and important to learn about creative attention. And he shares with us a delightful story about the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby that exposes an intimate insight into the creative process. (Here's a video clip of Jack telling this story) With all the food for thought and inspiration, we know you will have plenty of chew on until the conclusion of our incredible conversation airs next week. We love talking with the brilliant and funny Jack Canfora and leave each conversation a little bit smarter, much more inspired to hone the craft of writing, and in awe of a master creator. What is it like to feel better in your mental state? And what does it take to get there and to stay that way? Those are some of the questions we ask in this interview with the great comedian Gary Gulman. Gary sounds very different than when John Moe first interviewed him back in the fall of 2017 when Gary had been hospitalized for depression and was just beginning to turn things around. We hear about how he convinced himself to begin a very kind and manageable exercise regimen, how he tended to his nutrition, and how he took a pretty radical approach to saying yes to just about every opportunity that came his way, even when that meant having lunch with audience members who asked on the day after a show. From this episode, host John Moe says, “We spend a lot of time on this podcast talking about what it's like to feel terrible. Because it's good to know that and people can relate and feel less alone. We carry each other's load. But I thought it would be good to also hear about what recovery can sound like.”For more live shows and more information, visit Gary's website, www.GaryGulman.com.OH AND ALSO it's the week 2 of our annual MAX FUN DRIVE! Actor and comedian Gary Gulman is one of America's most popular comics. A product or Massachusetts, Gary's currently on his "Born on 3rd Base Tour". His most recent stand-up special for HBO, “The Great Depresh,” is a universally acclaimed, tour de force look at mental illness, which is equal parts hilarious and inspiring. He was most recently seen co-starring with Amy Schumer in the hit Hulu comedy series, Life & Beth. His memoir, Misfit, will be published in September. This rank's among my most favorite pod chats because it's a truly important one. Gary not only takes us back on a wicked funny ride through his impoverished Jewish childhood, his high-school and college years, his early comedy journey and what it means to be a "Masshole"...he's also brutally honest about his life-long struggle with depression and anxiety and how it's impacted his life, his relationships, his work, his sense of self and the message it sends to others who are suffering, and the help and inspiration it's given them. It turns out Gary Gulman is a huge Billy Joel fan. And who better to have after we wrap up the "Gs" then Gary G. Gary has, among other things, an amazing comedy special/documentary on HBO Max entitled, The Great Depresh, which is now a new comedy album as well. He is also scheduled to play Carnegie Hall November 13, 2021 -- so it's a HUGE deal that he was able to take a few moments and talk a little Billy Joel.

In this episode, he talks to Jeff Simmermon about his mental health struggles, the transformative effect his special has had on his life and career, what it takes to stay healthy, how to support depressed loved ones and why relentless cynicism is complete bullshit.

Electro convulsive therapy (ECT) sounds scary...but is it? This week, Imani talks with comedian Gary Gulman who underwent ECT to treat severe depression. Plus, Imani and Gary compare notes on the way depression has affected both of their lives over the years. Gary's hour-long comedy special, The Great Depresh, is out on HBONow and HBOGo.
It's rough out there right now. Reach out to a friend and see how they're doing. Have a Zoom call. DO SOMETHING! Depression is real so be vigilant and look out for the people you love and care about!Outro Inttro
After comedian Gary Gulman's last Netflix special premiered in 2016, he went down a dark hole, going as far as to check himself into a mental hospital and undergo electroshock treatments. He has since recovered and turned his experience into an hour-long special, with the goal of making depression easier to talk about through comedy. In this episode, Gary joins us to talk about his recovery and how he can be confident that his "depresh" is now in "remish" for good.

Gary Gulman is a comedian I love as a professional, a person and a friend. He first came on my podcast in 2016. When he was severely depressed. He could barely get out of bed. I admired him. Because he was really honest about it. He's doing better now. But there's no such thing as perfect when it comes to mental health. We all have our battles. Whether it's with self-doubt, fear of getting out of our comfort zone, wanting to be liked... or if it's the intense spectrum of clinical depression, which Gary brings light to. And laughter in his new HBO comedy special, "The Great Depresh." Hey. I'm giving away free copies of my new book, "The Side Hustle Bible." It's a collection of 177 proven ways to make extra income.
