Mitch takes a BM (Big Meeting) with a streaming concern called Drivvel+ to discuss a new so-called reality series.Endnotes:Maria Bamford, Sure, I'll Join Your Cult: A Memoir of Mental Illness and the Quest to Belong Anywhere (New York, Galery Books, 2023) p.7 Capsule Review: A quirky yet charming look on mental illness. By cults, Bamford is mostly referring to family and 12-step programs, but like Nancherla, below, she's not afraid of drifting off topic. Not quite the tour-de-force I hoped for, perhaps my expectations were too high. Slack Score: -4; Snark Score: 5 ; Overall FCA ranking: 95Gary Gulman, Misfit; Growing Up Akward in the '80's (New York, Flatiron Books, 2023) p.283 Capsule Review: An offbeat but witty peak at depression. The spin here is it's a (more or less) year-by-year chronicle of Gulman's public K-12 school years, mostly focussing on one core story or theme for that year and interspersed with almost contemporary interstitial journal entrys to set up or contrast the childhood stuff. Very well written, of course, bordering on overly, which sometimes gets in the way of getting inside the head of an inarticulate pre-teen and definitely makes you question how accurate the anecdotes could be. Slack Score: 9; Snark Score: 12; Overall FCA ranking: 117Aparna Nancherla, Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself, and Impostor Syndrome (New York, Viking, 2023) p.18 Capsule Review: A peculiar but engaging examination of imposter syndrome. Starts off as semi-clinical investigation into the titular syndrome but ends up being a hodge podge of personal essays and confessions, mullings on social media, the trickiness of political correctness and procrastination. Slack Score: -6; Snark Score: 5.2 ; Overall FCA ranking: 142

It's now been four years since Gary Gulman released his remarkable stand-up special ‘The Great Depresh.' And despite a global pandemic that caused its own parallel mental health crisis, he says he's really never felt better. The prolific comedian has a new memoir out called ‘Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the ‘80s' and when we spoke, he was about to perform at Carnegie Hall—less than five years after he walked out of a psychiatric ward. In this episode, Gulman opens up about how he turned things around and achieved a new level of comedy confidence that has allowed him to be vulnerable on stage in a whole new way. He also weighs in on Bo Burnham's anxiety-themed special ‘Inside,' discusses his role in Amy Schumer's Hulu series ‘Life & Beth', looks back at his “miserable” time on Dane Cook's ‘Tourgasm' and a lot more. This episode was originally published on September 21st, 2021.Buy Gary Gulman's book ‘Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the ‘80s'Follow Gary Gulman on Twitter @GaryGulman and Instagram @garygulmanFollow Matt Wilstein on Twitter @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast. What is it like to feel better in your mental state? And what does it take to get there and to stay that way? Those are some of the questions we ask in this interview with the great comedian Gary Gulman. Gary sounds very different than when John Moe first interviewed him back in the fall of 2017 when Gary had been hospitalized for depression and was just beginning to turn things around. We hear about how he convinced himself to begin a very kind and manageable exercise regimen, how he tended to his nutrition, and how he took a pretty radical approach to saying yes to just about every opportunity that came his way, even when that meant having lunch with audience members who asked on the day after a show. From this episode, host John Moe says, “We spend a lot of time on this podcast talking about what it's like to feel terrible. Because it's good to know that and people can relate and feel less alone. We carry each other's load. But I thought it would be good to also hear about what recovery can sound like.”For more live shows and more information, visit Gary's website, www.GaryGulman.com.OH AND ALSO it's the week 2 of our annual MAX FUN DRIVE! GARY GULMAN always loved late night television and dreamed of being a guest one day. That dream came true and he has appeared on every late night talk show: "The Tonight Whow with Jay Leno," "The Late Show with David Letterman," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" and "Craig Kilborn," “Conan,” "Late Night With Seth Myers," "The Pete Holmes Show," "Last Call with Carson Daly," and "Jimmy Kimmel Live." His brand of clever, original comedy was singled out by the "New York Times” who recently wrote that Gary is "One of the country’s strongest comedians.” Gulman’s breakthrough success came after appearing on the second and third season of NBC’s stand-up showcase, "Last Comic Standing," where he was one of the runners-up in season three, and guest starred in season four. The following year, Gary was invited to join Dane Cook’s “Tourgasm" Tour, and was also featured in the series on HBO. Next up, Gulman served as host and writer for the New England Sports Network’s "Comedy All Stars Series." Gulman has performed three times at the Nascar year end awards show, at Madison Square Garden as part of the New York Comedy Festival, HBO’s Las Vegas Comedy Festival, and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Gulman guest-starred on "Inside Amy Schemer” and his body of work includes a half-hour Showtime Network Special, two hour Comedy Central Specials, a Netflix Special, and four comedy albums.

Followers of the Boston Celtics who happen to also be fans of standup comedy are for the most part aware of popular comedian Gary Gulman's love for the team he grew up watching as a native of Peabody, Massachusetts. And Gulman is also a fan of dropping in on Celtics-oriented podcasts while rightly advocating for patience with this up-and-coming roster. So the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast linked up with Gulman to talk about his prescient analysis of the 2021-22 Boston roster in our most recent episode, touching on everything from how he played the sport along with football in high school (and the latter in college at Boston University) to his outstanding standup and advocacy for mental health. We even get into the new HBO series "Winning Time" and his inside view of the series as it was developed via his own ties to the cast producing the Los Angeles Lakers-centric docu-series given its unignorable ties to the Celtics in the 1980s. Join Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn for a fascinating talk about Boston sports now and past with one of our favorite comedians in this special edition of the Lab.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/celtics-lab-nba-basketball-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
