This week Mea Culpa welcomes the legendary actor, comedian, director, and producer Henry Winkler. Best known for his iconic turn as “The Fonze” on Happy Days and more recently for his Emmy-nominated role on the hit comedy “Barry”, playing beloved acting teacher Gene Cousineau. And before that, he was a staple on “Arrested Development”, “Hank Zipzer” and Winkler even appeared as himself on “Bojack Horseman”. All told, Winkler's accolades include a Primetime Emmy, two Daytime Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award. Not bad. He's a Yale “School of Drama” Grad and his acting career spans 6 decades. He has performed in both dramatic and comedic roles, in film television, and on stage. Though one might say he is the quintessential character actor. He's done several pictures with his buddy Adam Sandler including, “Little Nicky” and “Don't Mess with the Zohan” and has continued to collaborate with his “Happy Day”s cohort, Ron Howard. Journalist Michael Schneider said recently, that "the rumors are true," Winkler is "one of the nicest, most genuine men in all of Hollywood.” Michael and Henry Winkler talk about their family life, their careers, and of course politics.

Huge thank you to the iconic multiple Golden Globes and Emmy Award winning actor Henry Winkler for coming on my show for an interview! We began the interview talking about Henry's political views, the importance of climate change, and the uproar of people not wanting to receive the Covid-19 vaccine. We then got into his time in theater, his role as Butchey in The Lords of Flatbush, and how he was the reason for Sylvester Stallone making Rocky. Henry discussed getting the role of the most iconic TV character of all time Arthur Fonzarelli aka Fonzie or "The Fonz", his first day on the set of Happy Days, and if there will be another Happy Days reunion in the near future. He talked about what it was like working with Pat Morita, who played Arnold on Happy Days and later played Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid films. We then talked about Henry's role as Chuck Lumley in Ron Howard's 1982 Night Shift, working alongside Michael Keaton, and his cousin Richard Belzer. Fun Fact: Henry Winkler did not know that he and Richard Belzer were cousins until they did an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit together. We talked about his role as Principal Himbry in the late great Wes Craven's 1996 classic masterpiece Scream, his death scene taking two hours to film, and his Fonz jacket being in the closet scene. Henry is afraid of watching horror films and told the story of seeing Jaws for the first time when it was in theaters back in 1975. Henry told me about how it felt winning an Emmy for the first time as an actor for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry in 2018. We finished the interview talking about his important book series Hank Zipzer that he created with his writing partner Lin Oliver in 2003 to help kids who have dyslexia. He has a new book series called Alien Superstar and the final book of the trilogy is releasing this October. HBO's Season 3 of Barry will start filming on July 30th, 2021 and will be releasing soon. He is also the voice of Fritz in the new Monsters at Work animated series. Stay tuned! During my 14 years at SIRUSXM I interviewed lots of big name actors, comedians and celebrities. Most of them were pretty boring in conversation. Others were thoughtful and hilarious but Henry Winkler always stood out to me. He was kind and generous and when he learned that SIRIUSXM cancelled my show and contract he wrote an amazing tweet honoring my talent. I will never forget that. We talked about how to bounce back from failure and rejection as well as what brings him joy in his life. I asked him about his adult friendships and how he sees what is happening in America and the world. It's a fascinating and inspiring conversation and I think you will really love it. Heyyyy… it’s Henry Winkler, the nicest man in show business. He’ll always be remembered as the Fonz but he has a new feather in his cap: an Emmy Award (his first!) for playing Bill Hader’s acting teacher on the delightfully dark HBO comedy series Barry. Henry is also a masterful storyteller and held Leonard and Jessie in rapt attention, recalling early days working with Sylvester Stallone in The Lordz of Flatbush and, more recently, writing a series of popular children’s books about a boy with dyslexia (like Henry) named Hank Zipzer. He has a way of putting people at ease and this hour flies by.
Actor, producer, and author Henry Winkler (Happy Days, Arrested Development) talks about his best-selling series of Hank Zipzer books for children with dyslexia inspired by his own childhood struggles with the learning disability. He shares how his reading disorder led to some creative auditioning when he tried out for Happy Days, his fondest memories of the show’s creator Gary Marshall, and why the network tried to shoot down the Fonz’s famous leather jacket. He discusses how he navigates the hurdles presented by his learning disorder in his roles as actor, producer, and author, and he talks about the innovative new font he uses in the Here’s Hank books that actually makes reading easier for dyslexics. Plus, why bad grades aren’t the end of the world and why “jumping the shark” isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are 17 books available in Henry Winkler’s Hank Zipzer: World’s Greatest Under-Achiever series (ages 8-12) and 9 books in the Here’s Hank series (ages 6-8) including his latest Here’s Hank: Always Watch Out for Flying Potato Salad available to order on Amazon.
