We'll discuss the importance of tailored educational approaches and the benefits of reducing homework to improve both mental health and learning outcomes. Dr. McEvoy emphasizes the significance of understanding family and medical history when addressing learning disabilities, advocating for early evaluations and interventions.We'll talk about the critical roles of nutrition, hydration, sleep, and exercise in a child's overall well-being, especially for those with attention deficit disorders. Practical strategies for reinforcing positive behavior and building new skills in children are shared, along with a discussion on balancing naturopathic approaches with medication when necessary. Dr. Robin McEvoy has been practicing developmental neuropsychology for 30 years. With each evaluation, she asks herself, “How can I help.” Many parents bring their kids in for evaluation because they are still struggling, despite working with a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a learning specialist or a whole team of specialists. The parents were doing “standard of care” thoroughly, but it was not enough. There were times she worried that she would not find a way to help, that the parents were already doing everything possible.But she hates the thought of saying there was nothing else to be done. So instead of saying that, she decided to dig deeper. She dug into nutrition, sleep, medical conditions and myriad of complementary and alternative approaches to learning and behavior. (And while digging, she met Child Decoded co-founder, Kim Gangwish.)By developing a more thorough understanding of the mind/body integration, she began to find other avenues that actually opened up new possibilities for children. She loves having options for families who had been told to just accept their child's challenges and live with them. She had been told the same thing about her own daughter who had a severe speech disability and sensory issues. As both a developmental neuropsychologist and a parent, she became expert at mapping out paths through difficult presentations.Dr. McEvoy earned her PH.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Houston, then went on to fellow in Psychobiology/Neuropsychology at the University of Colorado Medical School. She holds a research faculty position at the University of Colorado, and also maintains a private practice where she can evaluate using the Child Decoded model.Evaluation is the heart of her work with children: helping families, pediatricians, and school districts to find a deeper understanding of complex challenges. Wondering what the signs are that your child may potentially struggle with dyslexia? You HAVE to listen to our interview with Robin Zikmund, a mom-advocate from the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). It's estimated that about 20% of kids struggle with dyslexia; that's one out of five! AND - it's hereditary, so if someone in your child's family struggled with dyslexia, that could mean your child is more likely to struggle too. There's a spectrum for dyslexia too so there's a huge range to how much it might affect someone. Early intervention is KEY, Robin says so this episode is even more important if you have little ones - like before age 5! While this episode is not meant as a diagnosis, Robin will help you start looking for some of the earliest signs of one of the most common learning challenges - she will also help you understand what your next steps are to get the support you need from your child's school. Robin's story of her son's frustration with reading and learning to the point of complete defeat, will break your heart, but also her drive to get to the bottom of what was happening and eventually "educating the educators" will inspire you to advocate for your child too. Karen Gazith, PhD, is a faculty lecturer in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at McGill University, where she also serves as the graduate program director for the Certificate of Inclusive Education and for the ECP liaison for the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education.  From 2018 to 2020, Dr. Gazith served as the academic project leader for McGill University Faculty of Education's Determining Best Practice for Students with Learning Challenges in Quebec: Comprehensive Review and Knowledge Mobilization. She is also the author of Teaching with Purpose: How to Thoughtfully Implement Evidence-Based Practices in Your Classroom. She serves additionally as the director of the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre of Federation CJA.  She holds a strong belief that teachers play a critical role in the success of their students, and she has presented worldwide on topics related to developing key competencies in leadership, inclusive education, evidence-based practices, and assessment and instruction. Dr. Gazith began her teaching career at the Feuerstein Institute in Jerusalem, where she implemented Dr. Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment Program for young children and adolescents. She has taught at Hebrew College in Boston and the University of New Brunswick as well. Dr. Gazith has won numerous excellence awards at Federation CJA in Montreal, including the Pearl Feintuch Award, the Gewurz Award for Jewish Educational Leadership, and Federation CJA awards of excellence. She's received scholarships from Les Fonds pour la Formation de Chercheurs et l'Aide à la Recherche from the Quebec government, as well as from the Scottish Rite Foundation for doctoral research. In this special episode, we're joined by Heather O'Donnell for a conversation about shifting from the classroom to private practice and how we can support parents and classroom teachers. Heather O'Donnell MS.Ed and Ed.M began her career as a classroom teacher. Working in both special and general education classroom settings, she left the classroom in 2018 to open New Paltz Multisensory, an online and in-person tutoring practice in New Paltz, NY. After identifying a need for private multisensory reading instruction in her community, the practice has grown to include a team of 13 tutors providing online and in-person multisensory reading, writing, and math instruction to students in over 10 states.
