By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

In this episode, Joe interviews Shauheen Etminan, Ph.D.: co-founder of VCENNA, a drug discovery and development company, and Magi Ancestral Supplements, which sells nootropics inspired by ancient Eastern traditions. He discusses his journey into the world of plant extraction, how he first discovered compounds like Haoma and Harmaline, and why he decided to bring Iranian tradition to the psychedelic renaissance. He explores the similarities between psychedelics and experiences found in mystical traditions, and how that historical context can inform modern psychedelic practice. He sees this exemplified most with dream recollection, attending to the emotions found within dreams, and the concept of wakeful dreaming, where one can access unconscious insights consciously, through the liminal (or hypnagogic) state between dreaming and wakefulness.  He discusses: Zoroastrianism and how the teachings of Zarathustra on understanding morality have inspired hi Syrian Rue in Iranian culture, and how it compares to the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine: Is it actually stronger than ayahuasca Henry Corbin's practice of embodied imagination and Jung's concept of active imaginatio Other less-discussed compounds he's interested in, like Ephedra and Saffron and more! In this episode, David interviews Shauheen Etminan, Ph.D. and Jonathan Lu: Co-Founders of Magi Ancestral Supplements. Through studying ancient Zoroastrian writings and 2,000 year-old Chinese texts in search of compounds and formulations forgotten by history, Etminan and Lu co-founded drug discovery company VCENNA in 2019 to use extraction technology to isolate these compounds. This led to an understanding of the health properties behind beta-carbolines, which led to their nootropic company, Magi Ancestral Supplements. They talk about the early days and experimenting on themselves, how beta-carbolines create dream-like states, and how their research sent each of them further into their own heritage, and asking themselves: How do we remember what our ancestors knew?  They discuss espand, haoma, Syrian rue, and how common Syrian rue is in both Iranian culture and psychedelic history; what is a drug vs. what is a supplement; common threads they've seen across different cultures and how we may be repeating some of their mistakes; Etminan's recent ayahuasca experience with the Santo Daime church; and of course, some of Magi Ancestral Supplements' products and their expected effects – from deep meditation to lucid dreaming to even mild hallucinations. Deepanker Khosla, or DK as he is often called, is the chef of the Michelin starred restaurant Haōma in Bangkok, Thailand. He was born in Allahabad, India and breaks a lot of misconceptions of who an Indian chef is supposed to be and what Indian food is supposed to look like.Khosla has managed to make the sustainability of his restaurant something more than just a marketing ploy. Right in the middle of chaotic, polluted Bangkok, surrounded by glass and steel, he's created an oasis on less than an acre with an aquaculture system that supplies all of his freshwater fish based off a YouTube class he took part in. He also harvests rainwater that he purifies and serves to guests as still or sparkling. He grows all of his garnishes, he houses honeybees and has planted all kinds of different trees. He has actually been able to improve the air quality of the restaurant and, importantly, he has been effective in lowering his overall costs in running the restaurant, which allows him to pay his employees better and make them happier. We discuss how he lived in his food truck prior to opening the restaurant and how he drove it all over southeast Asia, from beer garden to beer garden, as well as where his ideas come from and how he defines what Neo-Indian food is. We also talk about how limited the idea of Indian cuisine has been around the world and how people like himself and Unapologetic Foods in New York are changing that. There is so much going on we didn't even have time to talk about how he turned his restaurant into a soup kitchen during the pandemic, feeding more than a hundred thousand people. Richards saw the unique opportunity in the clean beauty space, as the store would be the first of its kind in the metropolitan area that offered a quintessentially cool, curated range of effective, niche and luxury beauty products. SHEN Beauty opened its doors in 2010 in Cobble Hill. “When I first opened the doors to SHEN Beauty, I wanted to bring beauty to Brooklyn, or rather create Brooklyn beauty from what I understood about the area and my neighbors, and what they wanted and what inspired them.” Considered a pioneer in the evolution of beauty retail, Jessica's keen sense of curation is the secret to how she has successfully launched over 70 brands at SHEN Beauty, including ILIA, Kosås, Lanolips, Haoma, Pai Skincare, Ellis Brooklyn, Vintner's Daughter, Aurelia and May Lindstrom. Richards' passion is connecting consumers to products that fuel beauty – both inside and out. Prior to opening SHEN Beauty, Jessica has had a seasoned career cultivating beauty and wellness brands to their fullest potential. From the early stages of her career at Lucky Magazine working hand in hand with Eva Chen as the magazine's brand curator to then becoming the Senior Beauty Buyer starting Free People Beauty, Jessica has always had a keen eye for bringing unique wellness brands to the forefront. Thanks to her success with SHEN Beauty, Jessica continues to serve as a consultant for wellness brands across the globe. Additionally, Jessica has spoken at several national panels such as the Indie Beauty Expo, Founder Made, and CEW. Due to the buzz surrounding SHEN Beauty, Richards was hand selected by goop founder Gwenyth Paltorow to grow their wellness division. If ayahuasca is the "Madre", then Syrian Rue is the Prince, a warrior spirit, Lara suggests, kissing cousins from the same tree, the One Tree that host different plant devas in an overall family. Different shamans initiate and play different roles to different energy needs but Lara says the point is to get people switched on, and if they're not switched on they need to die and be reborn, opening back up to the great pool of becoming... In which is discussed the feminine Godhead (Sophia) which preceeds the masculine Logos, the two trees of knowledge in the Garden of Eden, and the synergy between Hebrew, Islamic and Christian religions, amongst other things... Wahid is the sheik of an Iranian Sufi mystic order that uses an ayahuasca analogue–haoma–as its active sacrament and here he expounds at length about the mystic traditions of the Middle East and the entheogenic sacraments that catalyzed them. Sufism predates Islam and Wahid's order–Fatimiya–believes in multiple levels of divinity, where the Word of God is in the book, not the many prophets of God, and where they worship the daughter of the prophet Mohammed as the representation of the Godhead-ess. The entheogenic use of plants within these secret sects of Sufis has been underground for millennia and is again sprouting in some areas of the Middle East, despite persecution from the mainstream religions. Wahid discusses the ancient entheogenic use of acacias, blue lotus, psilocybin, syrian rue and haoma as well as the unspeakable name(s) of God–in Greek the Tetragrammaton (the four lettered name of God), the Logos, and the other trigger words to invoke the vibrational essence of the divine.
