Send us Fan MailIn this special episode, Skin Anarchy is partnering with CEW to shine a spotlight toward a group that rarely receives public recognition in the beauty industry: the scientists behind the products we use every day. Joined by CEW leaders Elana Drell Szyfer and Andrea Nagel, along with award recipients Dr. Jaime Emmetsberger of The Estée Lauder Companies & La Mer and Lavinia Popescu of Olaplex, the conversation explores the vision behind the CEW Innovator Awards and why celebrating scientific talent has become more important than ever. The awards were created to address a long-standing gap in the industry. While founders, executives, and brands often take center stage, the chemists, biologists, and engineers responsible for developing breakthrough ingredients and formulations typically remain behind the scenes. Through its partnership with the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists, CEW launched the Innovator Awards to recognize women leading scientific progress across research, formulation, sustainability, packaging, and emerging technologies.Throughout the episode, we explore what true innovation in beauty really looks like inside the lab. Jaime discusses how breakthroughs begin with understanding the biology of skin—how cells communicate, how environmental stressors influence aging, and how new tools like artificial intelligence can accelerate discovery without replacing scientific judgment. Meanwhile, Lavinia offers insight into the science of hair repair and how bond-building technologies and emerging peptide research continues to transform modern hair care.Listen to the full episode to hear how these innovators are shaping the future of beauty through science.Learn more about CEW's Innovator AwardsDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

With more than three decades of experience spanning companies like Chanel, L'Oréal, Avon, Estée Lauder, and RéVive, Elana offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how careers in beauty evolve—and what it takes to navigate an industry that constantly reinvents itself.Elana's path into beauty was anything but conventional. Originally a history major who imagined a future in nonprofit arts philanthropy, her first role at the Juilliard School focused on connecting donors with scholarship recipients. A shift toward business studies eventually led her into the beauty world through a position at Chanel's family office. Determined to move closer to the operating side of the industry, she studied trade publications, reached out to industry leaders directly, and ultimately landed at L'Oréal—where her career in beauty truly began.Over the next two decades, Elana built a foundation in marketing leadership across some of the industry's largest brands. Later, she transitioned into the entrepreneurial side of beauty, leading privately backed companies and guiding brands through transformation, acquisition, and growth—including her tenure as CEO of RéVive. Along the way, she witnessed firsthand how dramatically the beauty landscape has evolved, from traditional advertising and retail counters to today's fragmented world of social media, influencer discovery, and science-driven storytelling. As she steps into her new role at CEW, Elana reflects on leadership, the future of marketing, and the growing need for clarity around industry buzzwords like biotech and longevity.Listen to the full episode to hear Elana Drell Szyfer share lessons from her career and her vision for the future of the beauty industry.Learn more about CEWDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

Welcome to this electric, super-charged, high voltage brand-new episode of Light ‘Em Up!As season 5 will soon be a rap and in the books, please tell a friend that lives overseas about us!  We are now actively being downloaded in 115 countries. We expose and tell the truth in a world filled with confusion and bold-faced lies.We delve into the facts not the fiction about:  TASERS —Conducted Energy Devices (CED's) also referred to as Conducted Energy Weapons (CEW's):  A weapon that is deemed to be “less than lethal” and has been touted as saving lives and reducing civilian shootings, but in reality, carries the heavy baggage of a complicated past that I've personally observed being deployed in a punitive, wanton and capricious manner. We'll investigate:—      how law enforcement is said to deploy this weapon and how they often truly deploy it in reality. We'll examine:—      several case studies—      the CEW policy of The Akron Police Department (as one of its officers recently fired a TASER at an alleged person of interest riding a bicycle)—      the NYPD and its use of the TASER throughout the capital of the world, New York City—      and peel back all of the critical layers of the onion as to whether these devices can increase the incidence of death from its use.Have you ever been tased? From reputable law enforcement officers, I've been told that you lose control of your bowels and bladder for about a week following being tased. The TASER is an acronym for, believe it or not, (Thomas A. Swift's Electronic Rifle), named after a favorite book of the inventor John Cover who developed the device in the mid 70's.  Cover was a NASA physicist. The hand-held device can be used to incapacitate a person by transmitting a 50K volt electric shock delivered through two, small, barbed darts intended to penetrate clothing, puncture the skin and remain attached to the target. The darts are connected to the main unit by a thin insulated copper wire and deliver a modulated or controlled electric current designed to disrupt voluntary control of muscles, causing temporary neuromuscular incapacitation (NMI).If the heart is a muscle and it is governed by the electrical system of the human body, why couldn't this device affect the heart muscle?  In peer reviewed research in the scholarly journal “Circulation” from The American Heart Association – an article focused on:  TASER: Electronic Control Devices Can Cause Cardiac Arrest in Humans. In more than 1 instance, it has. The TASER is a branded name which can also be used as a stun gun by pressing it directly against the target's body, thereby administering an electric shock. Similar to a “cattle prod on steroids”. Many in the law enforcement community stand firmly behind the Taser and disagree vehemently that officers are cavalierly using Tasers on people who are passively resisting. However, the fact pattern shows instance after instance where officers have deployed this weapon -- even when they face little danger -- as a means to subdue unarmed people or in a punitive nature for those already in police custody. You be the judge. Changing Higher Ed
Improve Student Employability: Addressing the Great Misalignment in Higher Education

Changing Higher Ed

In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed podcast, Drumm McNaughton welcomes back Dr. Zack Mabel, Research Professor and Director of Research, and Kathryn Campbell, Associate Director of Editorial Policy and Senior Editor/Writer, from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW). They discuss the findings of CEW's recent report, "The Great Misalignment: Addressing the Mismatch Between the Supply of Certificates and Associates Degrees and the Future Demand for Workers in the U.S. Labor Markets," which highlights the severe disconnect between the credentials higher education institutions are producing and the skills employers need in the workforce. Key Discussion Points The Extent of the Misalignment: Only 50% of colleges use labor market data to guide program development or share the information with prospective students. To align with projected labor market demand through 2031, at least 50% of middle-skill credentials would need to be granted in different fields of study in half of the nation's local labor markets. Importance of Labor Market Alignment for Middle Skills Providers: Misalignment between credentials produced and employer needs varies substantially across regions. Perfect alignment may not be realistic, but the magnitude of the mismatch shows considerable room for improvement. Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Access to Aligned Programs: American Indian and Alaska Native adults are 3 to 18 times more likely to live in a community with no local middle-skill provider. Among those living near middle-skill institutions, Hispanics are the least likely to reside in communities with a strong alignment between credential production and workforce demand. Strengthening Career Counseling and Transfer Pathways: The current counseling system in high schools is understaffed and under-resourced to provide sufficient guidance. Over a quarter of middle-skills students are in liberal arts and sciences programs oriented toward transfer, but fewer than half successfully make that transition within six years. Using Labor Market Data for Program Improvement: Institutions need to utilize labor market data more strategically and systematically. Colleges need sufficient resources and staff expertise to collect, analyze, and translate this information into action. A collaborative regional approach to program development is essential. Three Key Takeaways for University, College, and Community College Presidents and Boards: Explore ways to collaborate with other local education and training providers to optimize the alignment of credentials with labor market demand. Invest heavily in interpersonal connections and support services that help students choose and complete programs leading to high-demand careers. Be vocal about the need for resources and support to effectively utilize labor market data for program improvement.   Read the transcript on our website → https://changinghighered.com/improve-student-employability-the-great-misalignment-report/ #HigherEducation #StudentEmployability #MiddleSkillJobs   About Our Podcast Guests Kathryn Peltier Campbell is Associate Director of Editorial Policy and Senior Editor/Writer at the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive. Why is the Center for Biological Diversity focusing on reducing meat consumption? When it comes to the causes of environmental destruction and overconsumption of resources, the meat industry is at the top of the list. Meat production uses massive amounts of water and land, and leaves behind devastating amounts of pollution and greenhouse gases. America's livestock industry — particularly through grazing on public lands — is one of the greatest threats to endangered species and habitat.   How to support the podcast: Share with others. Ken interviews Nyakio Grieco, Co-founder of Thirteen Lune and Founder of Relevant: Your Skin Seen on this flight of The Retail Pilot - Leaders & Legends.Nyakio (pronounced Neh-Kay-Oh) Grieco is a beauty entrepreneur and advocate for clean, inclusive beauty that suits all skin types, tones, and needs. As a veteran beauty founder and trusted industry voice, Nyakio has launched successful businesses: her award-winning brand nyakioTM, based on her family's Kenyan roots and beauty secrets that launched in 2002, and inclusive beauty e-commerce destination, Thirteen Lune, launched with cofounder Patrick Herning in 2020. Thirteen Lune launched as the first of its kind, e-commerce destination designed to inspire the discovery of beauty brands created by BIPOC founders that resonate with people of all colors. Thirteen Lune has since partnered with retailer JC Penney for inclusive beauty shop-in-shop locations in over 600 stores nationwide.Continuing her commitment to inclusive beauty Nyakio created Relevant: Your Skin Seen, a clean, science-led skincare brand that works for all skin tones and types. Working with top labs to ensure a diverse mix of chemists, Nyakio formulated each product with superfruits and actives in efficacious percentages to create products that truly perform. Most recently, the brand expanded into the cosmetics category with six color and complexion products. All products in the range are formulated with skincare benefits and serve and celebrate every skin tone, while hyper prioritizing consumers who have been underserved. Most recently, Nyakio Grieco has been honored with the CEW 2023 Female Founder Award, the Beauty Matter 2023 Future50 Award and included on the Inc. Magazine 2023 Female Founders 200 List. Key takeaways from the interview include:1.    Cultural Heritage and Beauty: Nyakio Grieco's journey into the beauty space was deeply influenced by her Kenyan heritage, particularly her grandmother's beauty secrets rooted in natural ingredients like coffee beans and sugar cane. This connection to her family's traditions and the use of earth-derived elements shaped her early interest in skincare.2.    Transition from Entertainment to Beauty: Despite initially pursuing a career in sports and entertainment, Grieco found herself drawn to the beauty industry through her work with actresses and exposure to beauty products. She noticed a gap in the market for products celebrating Africa's rich resources and heritage, leading her to pivot her career towards beauty entrepreneurship.3.    Challenges of Entrepreneurship: Grieco faced significant challenges as a black female founder, especially in accessing capital and navigating the beauty industry's landscape. Despite setbacks and failures, she persevered, leveraging mentorship, resourcefulness, and industry connections to keep her brand afloat and eventually succeed.4.    Creation of ThirteenLune: Following the acquisition of her brand by Unilever, Grieco co-founded Thirteen Lune with Patrick Herning, aiming to create an inclusive beauty retail platform highlighting products by black and brown founders. The platform aims to debunk stereotypes and provide visibility for diverse beauty brands, challenging the notion that these products are only for specific demographics.5.    Expansion and Future Vision: Despite the rapid growth of Thirteen Lune through partnerships with JCPenney and other retailers, Grieco remains focused on expanding the platform's direct-to-consumer presence and nurturing its brand identity. She sees opportunities for standalone stores, global expansion, and further development of their private label brand, Relevant. The goal is to continue championing diversity in the beauty industry while nurturing and growing the brands within the Thirteen Lune ecosystem. 6.    Thirteen Lune's Business Model: Unlike a typical marketplace, Thirteen Lune takes a physical position on inventory by importing products into the country, owning the goods, and then selling them to customers. They do not drop ship and prioritize owning the customer experience, ensuring consistency and brand representation across channels.7.    Launch of Relevant: Nyakio discusses launching Relevant as an opportunity to realize her dream brand. With Relevant, she aims to address market gaps and ensure all consumers feel seen at shelf, especially those with melanin-rich skin. The brand focuses on inclusivity, leveraging expertise in formulations and product testing.8.    Expansion and Distribution: Relevant's expansion into Sephora UK demonstrates growth and opportunity for the brand. Grieco emphasizes the importance of partnerships and distribution channels, such as JCPenney, to reach a wider audience and fulfill the brand's mission of inclusivity.9.    Marketing Strategies: Authenticity is central to Thirteen Lune and Relevant's marketing approach. Grieco emphasizes telling authentic stories that resonate with underserved consumers. In the early stages, they prioritized organic strategies over paid marketing and leveraged partnerships to amplify their message.10. Challenges and Opportunities: Grieco highlights the challenges of access to capital for people of color founders, despite the immense potential of diverse businesses. However, she remains optimistic about the shifting landscape and sees opportunities for growth through strategic partnerships, investments, and technological advancements.

Almost three-quarters of all jobs will require more than a high school diploma by 2031, according to a new report

Work In Progress

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2023 23:52

In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Nicole Smith, chief economist for Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce and co-author on their new report examining which job skills will be the most in-demand over the next eight years and what kind of education and training will you need to get them. As we start this conversation, it's important to know that most jobs already require some kind of post-secondary education and training beyond high school. "We're not necessarily talking about a bachelor's degree only, or a master's degree, or some sort of technical PhD. We're actually talking about skills in the middle," explains Smith. "We're talking about certificates, test-based certifications, vocational training licenses that deal with these technical jobs, and associate's degrees, as well." Right now, about 68% of the nation's jobs already require that additional training beyond high school. According to CEW's After Everything: Projections of Jobs, Education, and Training Requirements through 2031, as we shift even more toward a knowledge-based, tech-based economy, the percentage of jobs requiring more than a high school diploma will soar to 72% by 2031. CEW researchers project that the U.S. will have 171 million jobs in 2031, an increase of 16 million net new jobs from 2021. During that period, the analysis suggests there will be 18.5 million job openings per year on average, and some 12.5 million of these annualized openings will require at least some college education. According to the report, these latest projections demonstrate the central role postsecondary education plays in preparing the workforce of the future, "despite the fact that young people increasingly doubt the value of a degree and college enrollments continue to decline." Smith says two major factors contribute to the increasing demand for postsecondary education and training – the fastest-growing industries require workers with disproportionately higher education levels compared to industries with slower growth and occupations as a whole are steadily requiring more education as tasks within occupations become more complex. She says it is important that workers and job seekers look at the skills needed as the nature of work changes and seek out opportunities to stay up-to-date on those skills to stay relevant in the job market and advance their careers. "All of our data, all of our information, all of our history, points us to the fact that, in order for you to move up in your job, in order for you to get that promotion, managers are requiring you to have higher levels of education, higher levels of skill, and you have to recognize lifelong learning as a thing now, where you go back and you get that certification" or additional training, says Smith. Episode 215. If you know RMS Beauty, you know that the initials RMS stand for Rose-Marie Swift, a beauty industry veteran and longtime professional makeup artist who started her eponymous clean beauty line in 2009 (long before the term was widely used). As a makeup artist, Rose-Marie's 40-year career was long-admired for the glowing, naturally radiant makeup looks she created on some of the world's most visible faces (Gisele Bundchen, Zoe Saldana, Miranda Kerr and Tilda Swinton to name a few). Her work has been featured in countless magazine covers, featured editorials, and brand campaigns. As a beauty brand founder, she's more than a pioneer, she's a future-thinking trailblazer who started RMS Beauty because nothing else like it existed in the industry. After seeing her clients struggle with sensitivities to the ingredients found in most beauty products, she developed RMS using high-quality organic ingredients that are safe for all skin, while delivering professional quality and long-lasting performance. As Rose-Marie herself often says: “someone had to do it.” After building the brand for over a decade, the CEW awarded Rose-Marie their 2020 Female Founder Award, acknowledging her as a beauty leader and inspiration. Today, RMS products are cult-favorites for those in the know, and with countless beauty awards, thousands of five- star customer reviews, millions of social media shoutouts (yes, even on TikTok), the once under-the-radar beauty brand—and Rose-Marie herself—is getting a new burst of well-earned recognition. Rose Marie Swift is RMS Beauty, and RMS Beauty is Rose-Marie Swift, a brand that stands for clean beauty with zero compromises, meticulous ingredient selection, and a bright, continually innovative future. Masterfully made, beautifully clean.

What does EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) specifically do for the skin? What makes a good EVOO? Why is EVOO so much more than a buzzy, celebrity-endorsed skincare ingredient? Kim Walls is a fourth-generation entrepreneur, beauty formula pioneer, and Co-founder and CEO of Furtuna Skin. Born into beauty as the daughter of a renowned natural skincare founder, Kim grew up learning how to create topical healing formulations in her father's labs. After graduating from the University of California Santa Barbara, Kim studied biochemistry, skincare, and nutrition for two decades, focusing on the link between bio-hacking, bodily changes, and wellness efforts. She went on to work directly with Doctors, NICUs, and estheticians to implement her knowledge into their practices. An advocate for a holistic approach to health and wellness, Kim's curriculum combined ethnomedical knowledge with innovative learnings around traditional physiological markers such as hydration, blood oxygenation, nutritional levels, telomere length, mobility, response to touch, and more to improve patient experiences and outcomes. During this time, she also launched multiple skincare companies, parlaying her experience as an educator, esthetician, and nutritionist and carrying on the family legacy as a founder of natural brands that garnered international recognition. She worked with physicians, nurses, and lab chemists to research and develop breakthrough products that propelled clean beauty into the mainstream. As Co-Founder and CEO of Furtuna Skin, Kim leverages her ethnomedical and ethnobotanical expertise to help create the Italian brand's award-winning, 5-star-rated regenerative skincare formulas. Leading the product development team on formulation, Kim ensures that Furtuna Skin continues to raise the bar for clean beauty efficacy by debuting powerful ingredient complexes like Splendore Anchusa® Complex, optimized delivery methods like Chronoutrition®, and innovative ingredient processes like Soundbath® Method to deliver groundbreaking, transformative results. Named Travel + Leisure's 2021 “Global Vision Award Winner” and New Hope Media's "9 Wonder Women of the Natural Industry," Kim works at institutional and political levels through her nonprofit efforts to shift the current approach to product formulation and healthcare to improve global wellness. Most recently, Kim served as leader of the Retail Advisory Committee for the Environmental Working Group (EWG). An undisputed pioneer of the clean beauty movement, Kim has been featured on podcasts including Gloss Angeles, American Made Beauty, and Support is Sexy, appeared on TV including the CBS Early Show and Good Morning America, and been interviewed for major publications like Vogue, Allure, and WWD.
