170 - Paul Rappaport In episode 170 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist and record company promoter Paul Rappaport who's written a new book that will available April 15th called “Gliders Over Hollywood” In their conversation Paul tells us about his 1962 Gibson Les Paul jr (SG shape) that was given him by Buck Dharma and Blue Oyster Cult, whom we worked with at Columbia Records and he describes how he helped the band. He also shares with us a couple of Gibson Les Paul Reissues, a 1952 Goldtop and a 1959. Paul also discusses his amps. Paul talks about his friends in vintage instruments, producer Perry Margouleff (perrymargouleff.com) and amp builder Mitch Colby (ColbyAmps.com) who are working on the new Sundragon amps with Jimmy Page. Paul tells us about growing up in Downey California and starting on lap steel and eventually moving to guitar and played in the band “the Jades” with his Rickenbacker 6 string that he eventually gave to Elvis Costello. Paul talks about his other passions surfing and his family. Paul tells the story of his punk band “Mogan David and his Winos” which included Harold Bronson of Rhino Records fame. Paul explains how Paul Bloomfield helped him with his guitar playing. Paul then tells us about as a gift from the band Pink Floyd. He got to play with Pink Floyd on stage in London Arena. People who take up a life of rock and roll either make music, collect it, write about it, sell it or get into the record business. Harold Bronson has done all of those things. In Time Has Come Today: Rock and Roll Diaries 1967 - 2007, he recounts the fascinating adventure of his musical life. Before he co-founded Rhino Records - America's leading reissue label -- and put decades of rock and roll history back into musical circulation, Bronson was just another devoted fan growing up in Southern California in the 1960s. But with boundless enthusiasm, a discerning ear and a near-photographic memory, he channeled his passion into writing for the UCLA Daily Bruin and then Rolling Stone and other magazines. After meeting and interviewing many of the era's greats, he launched the Rhino label from the back room of the Los Angeles record store he managed. His new role put him behind the scenes with many of those same artists, working to bring their old - and sometimes new -- music to the public. Completing a trilogy with The Rhino Records Story (2013) and My British Invasion (2017), Time Has Come Today is a 40-year memoir in diary form that documents Bronson's progress from student musician and journalist to label executive, where his fandom, wit and creative imagination augmented and altered the course of many great careers.

Harold Bronson is as much of a rock ’n’ roll music fan as he is a music industry trailblazer. As a UCLA college music journalist, Harold flew to London to meet and interview his idols, and later wrote the book, "My British Invasion- The Inside Story on the Yardbirds, the Dave Clark Five, Manford Mann, Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, The Troggs, The Kinks, The Zombies, and More.” Harold shares little known, behind the scenes stories about his encounters with these music legends when they were still in their prime. He explains why he thinks the The Kinks stopped touring and why members of the Ramones didn’t speak to each other for years during their heyday. Harold co-founded Rhino Records with Richard Foos, which became the standard for novelty and reissue records and the first label to produce CD Box sets in America, beginning with Richie Valens. He signed The Knack and executive produced their ‘Zoom’ album. Rhino also produce several Firesign Theatre records. Harold grew up in Westchester, CA, (next to LAX airport) with some neighborhood kids who became the hit band, the Turtles. As film producer, Harold worked with Hunter Thompson to make “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, starring Johnny Depp. And he’s got Hunter Thompson stories to prove it!
