Last year, one of the key buzzwords in healthcare was virtual care; in 2020 it was probably telemedicine. In 2019 it was AI, in 2017 and 2018, it was blockchain in interoperability. There are many others of course, and many of these terms are still popular today. It seems, though, that the one term that got pushed most in the background, is blockchain. And that's a good thing, says John Bass, Founder & CEO of Hashed Industries (dba Hashed Health), a healthcare-focused venture studio. John is an internationally recognized author and speaker on value-based care, blockchain, and decentralized healthcare technology. He is the co-author of the HIMSS-published book “Blockchain in Healthcare: Innovations that Empower Patients, Connect Professionals and Improve Care." This short discussion was recorded at HLTH 2022 conference in Las Vegas. John talks about: where is blockchain in 2022, what can we expect in the future, how it relate to web3, and what could NFT - nonfungible tokens do for healthcare. In this episode, John Bass, founder, and CEO of Hashed Health talks about the future of payments in healthcare systems using Web3 technologies.   Payments are currently a complicated, costly, and inefficient part of healthcare. The health systems and processes in place were designed for a time that has now passed. Many are migrating from the traditional fee-for-service payment models to value-based and risk-based systems. However, there are still challenges to address in these new models as there is a need for more interoperability, automation, and healthcare trust; This is where John believes Web3 technologies can shift the dynamics between commerce and care, taking payments into the future.   Web3 is a new version of the Internet that we all know, organized around individuals rather than being organized around centralized companies with platforms that are owned and governed by a network of curators and artists or individuals who are responsible for the creation and the delivery of value. Here we find commonly used but widely misunderstood terms like the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, DAOs, and NFTs. John uses an example where total knee replacements are sold as NFTs by a group of orthopedic surgeons with a fixed selling price and terms and conditions of purchase. He details the value transfer and explains the benefits of these types of transactions.    Tune in and hear John talk about innovation in payments and Web3 technologies that enable it!

HealthShare sits down to talk about physician credentialing with Anthony Begando, CEO of Professional Credentialing Exchange. Also known as ProCredEx, which is also online at procredex.com, their joint venture with Hashed Health is bringing a physician credentialing data tool to the forefront now while others are still pondering what such a tool would look like. Those folks are a little late to the game. HealthShare discusses its role in identifying a partner in the space who can help hospitals actually take on the viciously time-intensive space that is physician credentialing by bypassing the issue of credentialing software altogether. Instead, they focus on creating an exchange whereby hospitals and physicians supply or store their source-verified credentials with protected yet easy access at any time. When a physician transitions to another facility, those credentials are accessible by the physician or the hospital where the physician is transferring. It doesn't matter which credentialing software the hospital uses or prefers. Now ... if you're a hospital still dissatisfied with your credentialing software, you should definitely take a look at our suite of solutions. In our portfolio, you will find a Verge Health, which has continued to provide reliable software and a team that can drive down total input time and deliver on the promise of fluid management of a physicians credentials.

The healthcare industry is paradoxical. On the one hand, treatment technologies represent some of the most advanced science known to humankind, while some administrative tasks are still performed using paper and fax machine. Studies have shown that the administrative costs of healthcare can represent up to one-third of the total cost of care. Also, as diagnosis, treatment, and care, becomes increasingly data-driven and patient-specific, the industry needs to adopt more secure and robust technologies to manage patient data and communications between the patient and the different participants in the healthcare supply chain. We are joined by John Bass and Corey Todaro, who are respectively CEO and CPO of Hashed Health, an innovation firm focused on accelerating the meaningful development of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies for the industry. Hashed Health works to build solutions which leverage blockchain to solve some of the most important challenges facing this sector. John Bass is the second blockchain conversation we've had on the Podcast. The first was last summer with Kristen Johns of Waller Law, which gave us a great overview of blockchain. In this conversation, John Bass of Hashed Health goes into more of the current blockchain environment. He points out early on that there's a lot of hype, but that the basic principles are well-proven. He also talks about some basic principles - the trust between two sides of a transaction that eliminates the need for a middle man - that blockchain creates. In the second half of the conversation we talk about the things that Hashed Health is doing with blockchain in healthcare. It's Hashed-specific, but as examples of what is being done, what can be done, with blockchain. For example, decentralized provider identities.

The healthcare industry is “Byzantinely complex,” says Corey Todaro, one of the founders of Hashed Health. The freedom to choose from a variety of different providers, says Todaro, “makes a true longitudinal view of a single patient almost an impossibility…it takes a tremendous amount of resources to identify you in different systems and to have a full understanding of your health condition.” For many, the disorganization of the healthcare industry and the inconsistencies that emerge from it are unsettling.  Todaro believes that blockchain and distributer ledger technology can provide the solution. “Blockchain pulls transactional players together onto a common and shared transactional platform, so even though we have a diversity of enterprise types…blockchains allow all of these diverse entities to interoperate together in a more efficient and a more promising way.” The ideas and efforts put forth by Hashed Health hold great promise for the future of the healthcare industry. Tune in to learn more. Todaro also discusses: The difference between and importance of provider identity management and patient identity management in creating a more efficient delivery of healthcare services How to reconcile the transparency of the blockchain with the need to protect and secure PHI on the blockchain What's on the horizon for Hashed Health, including the upcoming blockchain healthcare conference and a unique token offering
