Send us a textFrom boarding school trauma to embodying one of fiction's greatest detectives, Michael Maloney's theatrical journey reveals how life's most difficult experiences often forge our greatest strengths. The acclaimed British Actor joins us from his dressing room in Birmingham—fresh from celebrating his 100th performance as Hercule Poirot in the touring production of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express"With disarming honesty, Michael explores how being sent away from home at age 7 permanently altered his sense of belonging. "You cease to become a member of a family immediately," he reflects, describing how this early separation forced him into premature self-sufficiency while creating emotional wounds he would later need to address. This experience, along with his Roman Catholic upbringing, established complex foundations that would eventually serve his acting career in unexpected ways. The conversation shifts to his transformative years at the Royal Shakespeare Company, where Michael found himself amidst theatrical royalty—Derek Jacobi, Michael Gambon, Helen Mirren, and a young Mark Rylance. Their anarchic creativity, set against the backdrop of early 80s punk and new wave, shaped his understanding of classical discipline and theatrical expression. "We were all over the shop," he laughs, "and enjoying ourselves."Michael's reflections on the power of the spoken word reveal his deep appreciation for poetry and heightened language. He shares how sports provides a perfect metaphor for performance: some nights you win, some you lose, some you draw—but you always return to play again. This philosophy has helped him navigate the highs and lows of theatrical reviews throughout his career. Now at 67, finding himself unexpectedly cast as Poirot, Michael approaches each performance with the discipline earned through decades of classical training. When asked about his legacy, his answer is characteristically straightforward: "A proper actor... of significance and stature." Join us for this intimate conversation with a performer who has continuously found new ways to transform life's challenges into art.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. I play solo at Hugh O'Neill's in Malden, and several shows with my bandmates, The Boston Harbor Bhoys (Waltham Sr. Center, Medford's Ford Tavern, Framingham Elks fundraiser, Quincy's Assembly, and Boston's Green Dragon). So many songs, so many memories. I loved playing Hugh O'Neill's, where a table of young people requested The Saw Doctor's "N17" and ran out from their tables on the refrain each time to shout out "and the grass is green!". To the Sr Center in Waltham where the ENTIRE room of 100 people got all the hand - claps right on "Wild Rover" by the 2nd refrain, and the beautiful emotions expressed from our rendition of Danny Boy. To guests at the Framingham elks getting up to do all the dance moves to "The unicorn song", to seeing old fans from the South Shore of Boston that we haven't seen in 4 years requesting "Raglan Road", to jumping around The Green Dragon with my harmonica and tambourine leading hand claps on 'Finnegan's Wake" getting the whole bar clapping together. Agh, it was all so wonderful, went through a range of song styles and eras in the Celtic music catalogue, and it was wonderful connecting with audiences from the 20's up to their 90's, who all appreciated the music and experience in their own ways. It was one for the books! “

As ABA practitioners, we have many teaching procedures in our toolbox. Here, we're discussing precision teaching, which is also called fluency-based instruction, and how we can use it to benefit our students. Many of us remember having to memorize multiplication tables in elementary school. While it was an intimidating task, chances are we still know all the tables by heart as adults, because we learned them to fluency as children. In today's classrooms, math is taught in a much different manner. Fluency in things like simple multiplication is diminished, which impacts math skills overall. Precision teaching, or fluency-based instruction, is a system of teaching in ABA that utilizes exact measurements and data to guide instruction and curriculum choices. We discuss what it looks like when put into practice and how to define fluency. One way fluency benefits our students is through skill acquisition. When they can complete tasks quickly and with ease, they're less likely to engage in escape or problem behaviors. We discuss all the ways to use fluency, including social skills like commenting. We also talk about how to make precision teaching less complicated and more fun. What's Inside:What is fluency-based instruction and how does it help our students? Why fluency is important in terms of skill acquisition and reducing negative behavior.Examples of fluency-based instruction in action.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramPublished Fluency AimsEpisode 051: The Literacy Epidemic with Michael Maloney

The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier's Lament” I've renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text  -  and have added a verse,  but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words.  The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front. Oh  -  and it's going to be on our next duo album that will be out sometime this year.  Caveat warning, however; -   we're so busy doing a load of other things  -  including the beginnings of a new Purcells Polyphonic Party album as well as festivals and folk clubs and recording for TV and games…. that any plan for launching is going to have to be quite  vague. 44:20 - Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer "1924" 50:12 - THANKS 51:48 - Paddyman "The Best Pub Party in the World" from One for the Road 54:36 - Kellys Wayke "Walk the Mile" from Kellys Wayke 58:10 - the commoners "What's Your Whiskey For" from What's Your Whiskey For 1:01:42 - Michael Maloney "'Round the Mountains of Mourne" from January Hopeful 1:05:32 - CLOSING 1:07:11 - The Druids "South Australia" 1:09:35 - CREDITS The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather and our Patrons on Patreon. Tom welcomes the well-known Michael Maloney to the show. Mike discusses the outstanding professionals he works with to create Hidden Secrets of Money, which has done very well on YouTube, with the fourth episode having reached ten million views. He details how modern banks simply imagine money into existence with loans. Mike discusses the important distinctions between currency and money. Currency cannot store value over long periods of time, whereas honest money, like gold and silver, maintains its purchasing power. For the last 5,000 years, the predominant medium of exchange has been precious metals. The period of the 1970s was the biggest bull market for honest money, and we are overdue for a similar period. Currencies are constantly devalued by creating more units of them, which is inflation, and they make poor measurement tools for value. Various asset classes move in long-term cycles, and we're approaching another bull period for gold and silver; we've been stuck in a difficult mid-cycle correction since 2011. The Federal Reserve creates currency when they decide to purchase an asset. However, they are only allowed to buy in the open market; this was supposed to create price competition. Their open market, however, is different than the public's. They use the primary dealer investment banks and brokerage houses around the world. These are not banks in a conventional sense. He discusses the concept of currency units per person, and the idea that currency has to end up somewhere and inflate some asset class. Low interest rates create more currency due to the increased uptake in loans. This, coupled with direct stimulus, means someone has to repay this new money eventually. It used to be possible to borrow and increase GDP, but this is increasingly difficult today. This was back when real businesses were being built, but as a society, we've increasingly gone into debt. We've reached the point of no return where we can't borrow ourselves into prosperity. Central banks are increasingly buying gold, particularly the eastern banks in China, India, and Russia. Mike discusses recent changes in gold buying by the United States during the pandemic and how the U.S. has now returned to being a net seller of metals. Whenever the middle-class becomes impoverished, we see political risk. Gold and silver is the only thing you can buy that doesn't entail counterparty risk. If you don't already have metals as insurance, you may find it impossible to obtain in a crisis. He explains why a lot of money is going to chase after gold and silver during the next bull market. Geli first moved in when she was 18 but from that moment on, Hitler refuses to let her go out on her own, even chaperoned. On the first sitting of the new Reichstag, the 107 Nazi Members of Parliament deliberately create chaos. But with the Nazis now the second largest group in Parliament, foreign newspapers have to start taking Hitler seriously – even if he can be hard to pin down. Rarely rising before 11am, and not often in his office, he's more usually to be found in a nearby café, cramming his face with cream cakes. One way or another, Dorothy must land an interview with him. Meanwhile, Joseph Goebbels, now Party District Chief for Berlin is generating daily street disturbances, Jewish-owned department stores are one of his favourite targets. When a merger with other nationalist parties is suggested, Hitler – effectively the Nazi Party's only source of revenue – threatens resignation if he is not given total, unquestioning control over every aspect of the party. He uses this to establish the paramilitary Storm Division led by Captain Ernst Röhm, the ‘Machine Gun King of Bavaria'. So when Mussolini takes power in Italy in October 1922, everyone is asking: when will Hitler launch his own coup? We are very excited to have Michael Maloney as a guest today. He's the founder of Quincy Learning Center and an expert in precision teaching and direct instruction. Along with other professionals, Michael started sharing his methodology with other teachers and practitioners. Today, it's becoming a sizable force within the field. We're seeing several challenges related to literacy within the educational system and ten million students within the U.S. public school system are illiterate. So many adults fail to thrive because they don't have the fundamental literacy skills needed to get jobs, and Michael refers to the literacy problem as a global pandemic. Michael discusses what's known as The Follow Through Project, which was the single largest study done in North American education, started in the 1970s. The study found that the two best methods to help children who were at risk of failure were behavioral analysis and direct instruction. Michael provides valuable advice for BCBAs who aren't trained in these methods. He also explains why the system doesn't want to address the literacy problem and where we can start to make positive changes. We're also going to be covering this topic more in depth with Michael at our CEU webinar in July, so stay tuned for more information. In fact, you're going to get rewarded, you're going to get another contract, you're going to get another year of pension, you're going to get a raise, you're going to get two months off in the summer. There's just no accountability in the system and it doesn't start and end with the teachers. It goes all the way to the top.”   33:16 “You can barely find an educational institution that teaches the chart, or that teaches direct instruction, or for that matter, even does a good job of teaching behaviour analysis. I mean, I see these graduates, so they got master's degrees and their BCBAs and 28% of them ever use either direct instruction or precision teaching.”   1:01:21 “Essentially, until we can do things that people don't have to go sit and listen to somebody and get involved in what I call drive-by consulting, there's no accountability.”   1:02:49 “If you gave the teachers the opportunity to learn these skills, which they've never had, they would do a much better job. If they learn direct instruction only, they do a good job. If they paired that with precision teaching, they do an excellent job.”

Michael Maloney & Michael Oliver return this week. Recently Michael Maloney had a video with Harry Dent to discuss the state of the U.S. and global economy and they concluded that just like the Great Depression, Americans could find the value of their stocks, homes and even savings accounts wiped out. Is Maloney engaging in anti-establishment talk for the purpose of book and precious metals sales or is there an element of reality behind all this? Michael will be asked to defend his bold and cataclysmic viewpoint and address his very strongly held view that we are still in the early stages of a major deflationary environment. Mr. Dent is calling for $600 gold. As a precious metals' salesman, what does Michael think about the prospects for $600 gold? It's always good to check the fundamental views of an analyst like Mr. Maloney by listening to the language of markets and Michael Oliver will help us do that in the precious metals markets, equity, debt, and commodity markets as well.
