Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Nancy Youssef, Chief Business Development Officer and Executive Vice President, International with Soles4Souls, who discusses the history, operations, and impact of the nonprofit organization that supports relief efforts and turns shoes and clothing into educational and economic opportunities.During the interview, Nancy shares how their efforts were initially focused on helping the footwear industry in Southeast Asia and then the US after major disasters, but has since evolved to also focus on working with schools to help provide new athletic shoes to students in need and to create opportunities for entrepreneurs in remote areas through the reuse of donated shoes and clothing. She highlights the program's expansion to countries like Honduras, Haiti, Guatemala, and the Philippines, and its goal of extending the life of discarded products, which helps the environment and keeps the items out of landfills, while creating economic opportunities. Nancy talks about how the organization continues to support relief efforts in areas affected by recent disasters, including LA, North Carolina, and Florida. She wraps up talking about ways the community can support their efforts, including their upcoming "Race4EveryKid" virtual challenge fundraiser in May, and through product donations, such as shoes, clothes, and accessories. She highlights some of their many partnerships with organizations like Zappos and Plato's Closet and the availability of local drop-off locations.Visit https://soles4souls.org to learn more and to get involved with Soles4Souls.https://www.facebook.com/Soles4Souls/https://www.linkedin.com/company/soles4souls-inc-/https://www.instagram.com/soles4souls/?hl=en

Buddy is President & CEO at Soles4Souls, a not-for-profit social enterprise creating opportunity through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Teaster's experience at Soles4Souls, along with the organization's global economic impact, is chronicled in his book, shoestrings: how your donated shoes and clothes help people pull themselves out of poverty. Previously, Buddy was President of StarKart and the National Association of Local Advertisers, and served as Chief Network Officer for the nonprofit Young Presidents' Organization. In 2012 he joined Soles4Souls to rebuild the organization after a period of leadership turmoil.  In this episode we discuss: ●      How to regain trust after it's been lost ●      The surprising impact new shoes have on kids experiencing homelessness ●      The business case for partnering with Soles4Souls (from my adidas days) Key Takeaways: ●      One important pathway of impact Soles4Souls uses is to foster economic empowerment by supplying micro-enterprises with gently used shoes and clothing. There is a strong case for using this approach to alleviate poverty, versus giving products away. While giving products away is important during times of crisis, poverty is a systemic issue and therefore requires a systemic solution. Some academic research points to evidence that free donations can flood a market, ruining demand for local businesses. As Michael Matheson Miller, the director of PovertyCure says, “When you give away something free, you're giving away a band-aid. You're not addressing deeper causes of poverty and you may be inhibiting long-term solutions. Poor people aren't poor because they lack stuff; they're poor because they lack the infrastructure to create wealth.” This is an important distinction that explains why supporting economic empowerment is so powerful. ●      Dignity is a powerful word. Each person deserves to be treated with dignity. It's important to keep that word front and center when helping others, and when seeking help ourselves. Each of us will be on the receiving and the giving end of help countless times throughout our lives. Too often the foundation of dignity is lost when the numbers of need exceed our ability to imagine the individual. In these cases, emotion gets lost in faceless numbers and is replaced with efficiency. But it's acting on the foundation of dignity that keeps humanity on both sides of the equation. It's a standard worth holding ourselves accountable to in every interaction. ●      As consumers, it's important for each of us to take accountability for the lifecycle of the products we consume. It takes time and energy to sort and recycle items. It takes time and energy to drop off your old clothing and shoes at a donation center, instead of throwing them away. It's these small acts of time and energy that are needed from each one of us to enable a circular economy. A circular economy is a model of production and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible—keeping the material out of landfills and letting material be repurposed for a second life.   References: Connect with Buddy on LinkedIn Soles4Souls   Learn more here about how you can contribute to the Soles4Souls mission shoestrings: how your donated shoes and clothes help people pull themselves out of poverty by Buddy Teaster  For deeper insight into how charitable donations may impact economic development, I recommend “The One-for-one Business Model: Avoiding Unintended Consequences”, Knowledge at Wharton, February 16, 2015. Jacklyn Wells, a 19-year-old Depop seller posted a TikTok in late January showing off “the most insane thrift haul.” The TikTok quickly went negative, really negative with more than 5.9M views inciting a moral reaction that thrifting should be philanthropic not for profit. Jacklyn was called "greedy, lazy, and parasitic." I will spare you from the most aggressive comments but the controversy created quite a bit of debate on the ethics of resale. Sophie Benson's article appearing this week in British Vogue, Should You Buy From A Thrift Store If You Can Afford Not To? provided a thoughtful assessment of the debate. The majority of thrift stores operated by non for profits are job creation programs and these programs expand with more demand. As Benson rightly points out, “reselling requires hours of work including sourcing, prepping, cleaning, mending, styling, photographing and posting, and any markup must reflect and compensate for that labor.” As Benson points out, we aren't talking about stockpiling baby formula or toilet paper for that matter. The fashion industry produces 150 billion garments EVERY year for 8 billion people on the planet. Thrift stores are inundated with donations, turning away a majority of clothing items as they aren't able to sell thru them. There is no shortage of clothing. The more we thrift the more items we keep in use and this undoubtedly displaces some purchases of new items. We have massive problems in society where many can't afford clothing and this should create outrage, and ideally support programs designed around providing clothing such as Dress for Success or Soles4Souls. But those willing to invest in the risk, work, and curation of maximizing value for clothing should be celebrated not shamed. Glossy asked this week, Can The RealReal's aggressive cost-cutting help it reach profitability? My favorite part of the article was the sharp question, “So how did a company that helped usher in the massive and still growing fashion resale boom end up in this predicament?” There are only a handful of successful stand-alone retailers emerged over the past 20 years and there couldn't be a more difficult time to break out than during a global pandemic followed by a dramatic shift in the cost of capital. It's unclear if The RealReal will reach a point of profitable growth or will eventually be a part of a larger more established luxury retailer. However, resale is here to stay and clearly creating opportunities for brands and resale platform providers who support their resale efforts. Hanna Anderson launched their peer-to-peer resale platform Hanna-Me-Downs, powered by Archive. The storefront is prominently displayed on the main menu navigation of the mainline site and allows sellers to list items for other customers to shop. According to the company the site launched with 1,500 items with prices averaging $18-$24. This is a seemingly great fit for resale and the peer-to-peer model given the price point. I expect over time branded storefronts such as Hanna-Me-Downs will grow consumer awareness and expectations of resale. The So WhatKeeping items in use longer is essential for a more sustainable future, and those who invest their time to buy and resell clothing are doing us all a serviceBrands should choose the right resale model for their business and Hanna Anderson's peer-to-peer model will work well at the lower Kids' brand price point

What if I told you the shoes and clothing that you no longer want don't have to go to waste? What if those shoes could provide relief and create jobs? What if they could empower people to break the cycle of poverty? What if you could turn shoes and clothing into opportunity? That is the work of Soles4Souls and of today's guest, Buddy Teaster. Since 2006, Soles4Souls has distributed more than 51 million pairs of shoes to 127 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Not only do they donate shoes to those in need, but they also help people launch and sustain their own small business selling donated shoes and clothing.  Buddy is a passionate entrepreneur showing the world how social enterprise can be used to make the world a better place.    About Buddy Since 2012, Buddy has been president and CEO of Soles4Souls, the largest not-for-profit shoe and apparel social enterprise in the US. He has helped rebuild the board, expand partnerships, and extend Soles4Souls' global reach while doubling down on the mission of disrupting the cycle of poverty. Buddy was named to the National Retail Federation Foundation's 2018 List of People Shaping Retail's Future. Prior to Soles4Souls, he served as Chief Network Officer for the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), a non-profit organization committed to developing better leaders through education and idea exchange. His extensive speaking experience includes topics ranging from leadership and philanthropy to managing excess inventory and social enterprise. Buddy, a committed ultra-runner, has completed nearly seventy ultra-marathons. Guest: Emory Dinner Director They are based in Nashville but they have a location in Denver.  They take in gently worn or new shoes.  They take the shoes and give them to women in other countries so they can create their own small business.  They are also giving free shoes to kids and adults here in Colorado.  They work with school districts to help the kids who need shoes to get a new pair.  A new pair of shoes is more than a necessity for their feet; it also helps boost their confidence.  A $10 donation can provide a new pairs of shoes but $20 can provide a high quality shoe.  There are donation locations all around Colorado.  You can take up to 12 pairs to those locations.  When the shoes go to women in other countries, they can sell a used pair for $5-$10 which is huge for them.  They have given out over 3000 pairs of shoes in Colorado plus they also do a coat drive in the winter.            Soles4Souls.org/Colorado See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How do you stay committed to your goals when sh*t gets hard? There's an entire industry built on answering this question—and a litany of #lifehacks meant to assuage intolerance for hard work and discipline. But if you ask today's guest, he'll tell you the answer is found in consistently doing what you feel called to do—and doing it for something greater than yourself. It's about making friendships along the way. And seeing the process of pursuing your dreams as a privilege—not just a self-serving opportunity.Meet Hellah Sidibe.Born in Mali, Hellah emigrated from to the States from West Africa when he was a teen, becoming a professional soccer player and now, a U.S. citizen and the first Black person to ever run 3,000 miles across America. It's a truly extraordinary feat eclipsed only by his incredibly inspirational positive vibe and another noteworthy accomplishment: a 4+ year run streak.Hellah has run every single day, without missing one single day, for over 1500+ days in a row.I first came across Hellah's story when my friend Robbie Balenger joined Hellah for a segment of his transcontinental run through the Navajo Nation. Captivated by Robbie's Instagram Stories documenting the experience, I was immediately taken by Hellah's energy. I followed his journey through the conclusion of his run in New York City, and immediately got to work trying to book him here as soon as I could. And so, here we are.We talk running of course, but this conversation is about so much more. It's about reimagining your own personal potential. It's about chasing dreams, taking risks, putting yourself out there, and of course, what it takes to accomplish seemingly outlandish goals. We also discuss Hellah's decision to go plant-based. The impact this lifestyle has had on his running and, beyond that, his broader awareness. In addition, we talk about his work with Soles4Souls, a non-profit that provides repurposed shoes to empower the developing world. We discuss his relationship with social media, his growing YouTube presence, and the impact Casey Neistat has had on how he shares his personal perspective online. But mostly, this is about mindset. It's about living with intention—and the beauty of sharing the journey to self-actualization unfiltered, in real-time.To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Hellah's energy is infectious. It rubbed off on me. This week we talk with Meg Landymore and Celia Eicheldinger - two ultra running moms from the East Coast who are setting out to do the whole Appalachian Trail on foot! They plan on tackling a big section (anywhere from 100 miles to 200+ miles) every three weeks between work schedules and motherhood. We get to hear all about their plan, how they're staying flexible, how they're training for this kind of undertaking (from back to back to back trail runs to marching at a stand up desk with a weighted pack), worries they have about bouncing back and forth from the freedom of adventure and real life as busy moms and how to stay present in both places. These ladies are also making this journey about more than just themselves and are trying to raise $25,000 for Soles4Souls - a non profit that takes used shoes and turns them into opportunity; providing relief, creating jobs and empowering people to break the cycle of poverty. Check out the links below to donate to the cause, follow the journey, and if you're in the area (anywhere along the AT) see how you could help these awesome mamas as they head north along the trail! They start the roughly 2,200 mile journey on March 27th! Meg and Celia are so inspiring and we admire the examples they're setting of moms deciding to still go after BIG things even in the midst of their real lives with fears, fatigue, the little kid years, chronic pain, but also a refreshing focus on how ultra running and projects like this one stem from passion and aren't always convenient but are completely worth it. Like Meg said, “We're going to make it happen, whether or not we should is a fantastic question, but we're going to.” And Celia reminded us of what we all feel to be true when she said, “you kind of know deep down that we're much happier when we have something like this (a challenge). Something that terrifies us enough … there's a chance of failure and in life there's not many things you do where there's a real chance of failure. And it's kind of exciting.” We know they're going to do great, have the adventure of a lifetime and we can't wait to follow along! Exercise with Cold Weather (0:00:00) The cold weather doesn't have to put our fitness routines on hold. The winter season can provide for some fun and effective opportunities to stay active. Knowing how to stay safe and warm, will help us be able to take advantage of exercising during this time of year. Here to tell us all about being active in the cold weather is Malia Frey. Malia is a certified health coach and personal trainer. Thanksgiving Story (0:14:20) Sam Payne, host of The Apple Seed, shares a special Thanksgiving Story. Immunizations (0:29:00) We wanted to share some tips on vaccinations. Which ones are necessary and when do we need to get them. Here to tell us all about it is Dr. Jay W. Lee. Zero Waste Daniel (0:49:26) What if I told you it was the new trend to start wearing trash? Doesn't sound too appealing, but did you know nearly 15% of the material used in the fashion industry goes straight to the landfill? Now one New York designer is breaking the trend and setting the standard for the world to turn waste into clothing.  We have the Brooklyn-based fashion pioneer, Daniel Silverstein, with us to talk about his business and the industry's first line of zero-waste clothing, called Zero Waste Daniel. Refugees and Immigrants (1:01:59) Is there anything scarier than a move? Starting your whole life over is definitely daunting—especially if you're moving to a place where you don't speak the language, don't have a place to stay, or if don't have a place to work. This is the case of so many immigrants and refugees coming to the United States in search of a safer life and better opportunities for themselves and their children. Here to educate us more about what this experience can be like and how we can help people through this process is Natalie El-Deiry, executive director of the International Rescue Committee in Utah. Food Waste (1:15:01) How much money are you spending on food that you never actually eat? About 60 million tons or $160 billion worth of produce are thrown away in the US each year, and, according to the EPA, wasted food is the number one thing filling up our landfills. So what's the alternative to throwing out that uneaten food? What can we do at home to help fight this? Here to tell us all about it, is Waste Less Solutions founder, Dana Williamson. Soles4Souls (1:27:00) Now that winter is just around the corner, what is the first thing we do before stepping outside our homes into the November cold? We put our shoes on. Sadly, there is a huge population in the world that doesn't have the luxury of owning a pair of shoes. It can be dangerous to not have access to your own shoes, especially in countries with extreme heat or hazardous road conditions. This is what inspired the creation of Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting against world poverty through donations of new and used shoes. We've invited director of national partnerships Megan Walsh on the show to talk with us about her experience with the organization and how far donating a pair of shoes can go.

Soles4Souls (0:00:00) Now that winter is just around the corner, what is the first thing we do before stepping outside our homes into the November cold? We put our shoes on. Sadly, there is a huge population in the world that doesn't have the luxury of owning a pair of shoes. It can be dangerous to not have access to your own shoes, especially in countries with extreme heat or hazardous road conditions. This is what inspired the creation of Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting against world poverty through donations of new and used shoes. We've invited director of national partnerships Megan Walsh on the show to talk with us about her experience with the organization and how far donating a pair of shoes can go. Handling Challenges with Music (0:11:41) Can music really help us through the hard parts of life? Paul Cardall has topped multiple Billboard charts, and he now joins us to talk about how music keeps him going. Winter Survival Skills (0:34:55) Snow is starting to fall and skiers are anxious to hit the slopes. With all of the winter fun to be had, how often do we think about our safety and what we would do if we ever got stuck in a dangerous situation? Luckily for us, nature skills expert Jason Knight joins us to share how we can best prepare for being safe during our many winter activities and what to do in case of an emergency.  How to Argue Effectively (0:51:07) You just slammed the door after shouting and now you're in tears. That's not how that discussion was supposed to go. You both seem to have this “arguing” thing all wrong. But is there another way? A recent study shows that couples that argue effectively are 10 times more likely to have a happy relationship, so what does it mean to “argue effectively?” Dr. Elsbeth Meuth is the visionary and founder of the Human Relationship Mastery movement, a global initiative to transform human relationships into co-creative thriving partnerships. She joins us to share ways to argue the right way. Gratitude (1:07:55) We've all seen the 30 days of gratitude posts people are doing this month on social media. With Thanksgiving coming up, gratitude is on everyone's mind. According to a Miami study, there are physical outcomes to practicing gratitude. So what are they? And how can we become more grateful? Friend of the show Ganel-Lyn Condie is back to talk about gratitude.  Procrastination Anxiety (1:28:17) With so many things going on in our lives, there could be times where we put things off. While this may give us temporary relief, procrastinating can actually lead to more stress and more things to get done. But what if your repeated procrastination is actually due to feelings of anxiety or depression? Alice Boyes is a former clinical psychologist turned author. She explains how this could be the case.
