Send us a textThe landscape of HBCU football is undergoing a transformative shift as the 2025 season approaches, with NFL legends stepping into coaching roles and traditional powers reasserting their dominance.Former NFL stars Michael Vick and Desean Jackson have sent shockwaves through the MEAC by taking over at Norfolk State and Delaware State respectively. Vick's homecoming to the 757 area has already revitalized Norfolk State's program through increased visibility, merchandise sales, and fan engagement. His $400,000 salary makes him the highest-paid coach in the conference, signaling the university's commitment to football success. Meanwhile, Jackson brings his characteristic confidence and "take no prisoners" mentality to a Delaware State program looking to rebound from consecutive dismal seasons. In the SWAC, Jackson State continues to thrive under TC Taylor despite the post-Deion Sanders era. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan, who rejected transfer portal opportunities to remain with his hometown team, anchors a roster loaded with returning talent and strategic additions. The Tigers enter as clear favorites to repeat as conference champions and return to the Celebration Bowl. The transfer portal era has dramatically reshaped roster management, particularly affecting Division II powerhouses. Virginia Union head coach Dr. Alvin Parker revealed the jarring experience of losing 17 players to the portal immediately following their Elite Eight playoff run, illustrating how quickly program trajectories can change in today's college football environment.Southern University presents an intriguing case study in player redemption, with former LSU four-star running back Trey Holly joining head coach Terrence Graves' program. While Holly brings elite talent to the backfield, quarterback uncertainty looms as Southern prepares for their season opener against North Carolina Central in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge. As we kick off another exciting season of HBCU football, download the HBCU Gameday app for complete coverage of all the action, from conference battles to the Celebration Bowl and everything in between.Support the show

Steven Gaither launched HBCU Gameday in 2012 on Facebook and Twitter to highlight sports and culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A few years later, TV sportscaster Tolly Carr joined Gaither and helped to grow the brand across multiple platforms. Recently, Carr wrote a report for Better News about how HBCU Gameday, which started out as passion project, has grown into a profitable business. Read the report. In this episode of Better News, host Michael O'Connell talks to Carr about what got him interested in sports broadcasting in the first place, what attracted him to HBCU Gameday, and what advice he'd give to other media entrepreneurs who wish to take their passion project to the next level. The Better News podcast is a partnership between It's All Journalism and the American Press Institute to a) showcase innovative/experimental ideas that emerge from the Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund and b) share replicable strategies and tactics that benefit the news industry as a whole. Locked On HBCU - Daily Podcast On HBCU Football & Basketball
Isaiah Land has removed his name from the transfer portal and will return to FAMU instead of LSU, Georgia, or Texas. Talent isn't a question but I think returning to FAMU was the right decision as it is the place where talent meets opportunity. Instead of risking going to a crowded room at any other school, he chose to stay at FAMU where he knows he'll be given the chance to show his undeniable talent. Land passed up on the likes of Georgia and LSU in favor of returning to FAMU. These are football powerhouses that consistently send players to the NFL. Turning down schools of this caliber for an HBCU is a much bigger deal than a player leaving a small school. HBCU Gameday has partnered with Lincoln University for the HBCU Gameday Classic. The founder is a CIAA graduate, so this is a CIAA connection. Cheyney University, University of District of Columbia, and Bluefield State will all be apart of this tournament as well. This is an interesting step for the publication as their name grows synonymous with HBCU athletics. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Last time we spoke about Savannah State Women's Basketball they were an undefeated 9-0 team who was on fire and taking the conference by storm or even surprise. Some things have changed and somethings haven't. They're still undefeated & their record has upgraded from 9-0 to 11-0. They are looking to have their best start since the 93-94 season. Only thing standing in their way is Spring Hill University. There has been an exodus of teams from the MEAC. Florida A&M, Bethune Cookman, North Carolina A&T, and Savannah State have all left in last couple of years. Now the conference seems set to begin expansion. That expansion could potentially begin with Chicago State. As reported by HBCU Gameday, there is mutual interest but no official invitations. One thing CSU must do to be a part of the MEAC is start a football team. The CIAA is holding their first championship tournament in 70 years. The league is doing a great job of making this event feel special. More than just a mere tournament, the conference is making sure this tournament feels special with week long events. The events include Fan Fest, Career Expo, a step show, concerts and more. We go over the artists that are already named and some names I'd love. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Wilton sat down with Brandon “BJ” Jones, a contributor for HBCU GameDay and host of a new podcast entitled “The Barbershop with BJ Jones” coming soon on the OpenMic Network. BJ is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge where he played football under legendary coach Pete Richardson. BJ and I met on the sidelines of the football field as we covered the 2018 Football Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship game for HBCU GameDay. Not only was BJ a solid athlete, he took a lot of lessons from the game and applied them to his life and beyond. While he never thought he would get into sports journalism, BJ finds himself immersed in it. Sit back and get ready to listen as he discusses the state of the black athlete, the HBCU experience, Deion Sanders' hiring at Jackson State, his thoughts on sports leagues impact on Breonna Taylor's decision and more.
We were all set to run another conference summer check in episode when late on Thursday night, 5 star center Makur Maker, the #17 prospect in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2020 committed to play for the Howard Bisons over UCLA, Kentucky and Memphis. So Tani called up Steven Gaither from HBCU Gameday to discuss how it all went down, what this means for Howard, and just how good Makur will be in the MEAC. Then, Tani calls up Jeff Ermann, the publisher of Inside Maryland Sports to discuss Under Armour's collapse and their decision to break ties with UCLA. Host: Tani Levitt Guests: Steven Gaither, Jeff Ermann Tweet at the show! @247SportsCBBPod Follow or Subscribe to The 247Sports College Basketball Show on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.
