'Do you know what backbiting is?' They replied, 'Allah and His Messenger know best'. He said, It is saying something about your brother which he would dislike' Someone asked 'What if I say something about my brother which is true?' The Prophet (peace be on him) replied, If what you say of him is true, it is backbiting and if it is not true you have slandered him.'' When a person dislikes someone, he is likely to find faults in his appearance, behavior, lineage, and anything else which pertains to him. 'Aishah narrated that she said to the Prophet (pece be on him), "Do you see that Safiyyah (another wife of the Prophet) is such and such?" meaning that she was short. The Prophet (peace be on him) replied, "You have spoken a word such that, if it were mixed in the water of the ocean, it would darken it."? Backbiting is nothing but a desire to belittle people, to slander their honor, and to deride their accomplishments in their absence. Since this is stabbing in the back, it is an expression of narrow-mindedness and cowardice. Backbiting is a negative trait, and only those engage in it who themselves are not achievers. It is a tool of destruction, for one who is addicted to it leaves no one without throwing a dart at him and wounding him. It is no wonder then, that the Qur'an paints such a repulsive picture of this vile habit as would make people shrink from it in horror: And do not…..backbite one anther; would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would abhor that. (49:12) Since one feels sick at the very thought of eating human flesh, how much more revolting it is to think of eating the flesh of one's dead brother! Whenever an opportunity arose, the Prophet (peace be on him) stressed this Qur'anic imagery in order to imprint it on peoples' hearts and minds. Here's a glimpse of our profound conversation. As Ramadan approaches, we hope this discussion motivates us all to introspect, evolve, and embody the universal values of compassion and empathy that rise above faiths, offering invaluable lessons for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the greatest basketball players of all time: an NBA Hall of Famer, six-time MVP, 19-time All-Star, the master of the skyhook shot and a key part of the Showtime era Lakers. Since retiring from basketball, Abdul-Jabbar has written books, columns and even worked as a writer for Veronica Mars. When we talked with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar last year, he'd just narrated a documentary: Fight the Power: The Movements That Changed America. We'll revisit our conversation with the NBA legend. Kareem discusses playing alongside Magic Johnson, his roller disco days, and so much more. Plus, he shares why he was never able to play a game of Double Dutch as a kid. We continue familiarizing ourselves with all these teams at the start of the season, with a focus on TOR/MIA, GSW/DEN, HOU/MEM, ATL/ORL, plus some smaller notes on the Spurs, Pacers, Thunder, and Pistons.Plus, Friday Daily Duncs.Friday Daily DuncsRob MurphyThe Pistons are investigating assistant general manager Rob Murphy over an allegation of workplace misconduct involving a former female employee, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Hopefully, the investigation will produce a just outcome.James Edwards III of The Athletic profiled Murphy in August.LeBron JamesLeBron James drew attention to the Lakers' lack of quality 3-point shooting after they shot 10-for-40 (25%) from beyond the arc in their season-opener.Well, they shot even worse – 9-for-45 (20%) – in a loss to the Clippers last night.LeBron:"Our ballclub is our ballclub, and I'm definitely not going to sit here and harp on what we can't do every single game. That's not a leader. What I know we can do: We can defend our ass off. And we did that tonight, which gave us an opportunity to win, and we just couldn't make it happen. But, I'm OK with that."LeBron both tries to be a good leader and sometimes makes passive-aggressive comments. In this case, he has already made his point. The Lakers' roster has a crucial flaw, particularly for a LeBron team. The front office heard that. Not much else to be done at this moment. At some point, LeBron might try to accelerate the Lakers' trade timeline or reiterate what he wants a trade to accomplish. But for now, LeBron is seemingly settling into trying to win games with the teammates he has.Darvin HamRussell Westbrook said coming off the bench in the Lakers' preseason finale "absolutely" could have contributed to his hamstring injury.Lakers coach Darvin Ham:"First and foremost, let me be clear with this. The Lakers, myself, my staff – we in no way, shape or form would ever put anybody – a player, an employee – in harm's way, be it physically, mentally, spiritually. We don't stand for that. We're not about that. That's not who we are."Ham said he and Westbrook had a "brief discussion."Ham:"We moved on. We've got an understanding. And again, as the coach of this team, my staff and I, we're going to do what's best for our team to be as successful as it can be. And I'll just leave it at that.”Ham was hired in part for his ability to hold players accountable. Westbrook is a different challenge. But Ham sounds resolute.Ham, via Kyle Goon of The Orange County Register:"You have to be prepared to do whatever your team needs you to do,” he added. “And that's called being a professional. So, however we choose to use him, there has to be a willingness there to sacrifice for your teammates and the overall good of the team if that course of action is going to lead to success.”The true test will come if Ham decides bringing Westbrook off the bench would be better for the Lakers. And, really, we might not know if that happens. We'll know only if Ham follows through. Assuming the coach does, we'll see how Westbrook buys in – and how Ham responds if Westbrook makes more waves. But for now, Ham can call this latest issue quashed.Christian WoodWhich of Luka Doncic's Mavericks teammates has been the best player? Kristaps Porzingis set the bar while fizzling, which says something about the bar. I'd say Jalen Brunson last year.Tim Cato of The Athletic analyzes whether it might be Christian Wood.Wood isn't even starting for Dallas. But he's darned talented and, as Cato details, has already shown nice chemistry with Doncic. That seems sustainable given the multiple ways Wood can attack the pick-and-roll. If Wood defends a little better – I believe he's capable – this pairing could really work.Santi AldamaDanny's pick for biggest surprise player – Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama – looks pretty good. Starting at power forward with Jaren Jackson Jr. out, Aldama scored 18 points on 3-of-8 3-point shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds in Memphis' season-opening win over the Knicks on Wednesday. The Grizzlies outscored New York by 18 in his 39 minutes (and got outscored by 15 in the other nine minutes).Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal looked deeper into Aldama's performance, including how the slender Aldama held up defensively against the burlier Julius Randle.Victor WembanyamaWant more Victor Wembanyama hype? David Aldridge of The Athletic talked to six NBA personnel people about the presumptive No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft and delivers plenty. My favorite quote:It's not just his skill. It's the flexibility he moves with. It's incredible. It's like seeing a giraffe, but a giraffe that's moving like a completely different animal. And you're going: ‘Wait a minute; that's a giraffe, it's supposed to move slowly.' And, meanwhile, it's like this giraffe that's a predator. The giraffe is hunting you. And you're going wait, what? It's something we've never seen before. It's also interesting how Aldridge's sources seem divided on how to best deploy the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama defensively. One: "He's not a switch defender; he's a drop guy."Another: "He slides and moves so well, if they put him in pick-and-roll, he can switch. There's not a lot of fives in our league that can do that."A third: "He's a four. He's not going to be able to guard threes out on the perimeter all the time."A fourth: "No one that big is going to stay in front of prime-time NBA guards consistently out on the perimeter. But he has enough lateral movement — it's probably the best I've ever seen in anybody that big – that he'll surprise you from time to time on some stuff out there. But the great equalizer, if you blow by him, you talk about some guys that'll be looking over their shoulder as they're going to the basket. You could beat him, and he could be at the free-throw line, and he takes one step and he's pinning the thing."A fifth: "If whoever he gets drafted by ever had some type of conception of utilizing a zone? Can you imagine having a backline (with him) – or maybe even putting him in the top of defenses, trying to see over this albatross of a player?"Pick swapsPick swaps have become the rage as teams look to circumvent the Stepien Rule, which prohibits trading future first-round picks in consecutive drafts. Pick swaps allow teams to convey value in consecutive future drafts by retaining a first-rounder every other year, albeit a lower first-rounder.Think of pick swaps, and the first one that comes to mind is probably Celtics-Nets in 2017. As a condition of the Kevin Garnett-Paul Pierce trade four years earlier, Boston swapped its first-round pick (No. 27) for Brooklyn's (No. 1). The Celtics traded down to No. 3 and picked Jayson Tatum, who has developed into a star and left the Nets (and 76ers, who moved up to get Markelle Fultz No. 1) looking foolish. But pick swaps don't usually work like that.Zach Kram of The Ringer dug into the history of pick swaps and found most don't even get exercised. He determined the average value of a first-round pick swap is the No. 36 pick.Kram's research and presentation are certainly useful. Read his article, and you will be more informed. But I think he underplays the upside of pick swaps. The draft – and therefore, draft picks – are about upside. For many teams, the draft is the best – maybe only – way to get a franchise-changing star. That's more likely to happen high in the draft.A high second-rounder might have the average value of a pick swap. But only an unprotected pick swap has that limitless upside. That carries significant value. At some point, successful teams have all hit big on a player. Moderately positive moves aren't enough. You can keep hitting singles. But in a league with 29 other teams, some of them will hit home runs and surpass you. If you want to get to the top, you sometimes have to swing for the fences – even if you're more likely to strike out.Scoring recordYou probably know LeBron James will soon pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA's all-time scoring record. Do you know how many points Abdul-Jabbar scored? I sure didn't.Finding an excellent angle on such a well-covered storyline, Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times looked into how few people know the number and why that is. This is a really cool article. After reading it, I can tell you Abdul-Jabbar's career scoring mark is 38,387 – a number I'm sure to forget by tomorrow.Rudy Gobert/Karl-Anthony TownsNikola Jokic has become an All-NBA mainstay at center. Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis are likely All-NBA players when healthy, which isn't always. Often, it feels like one spot is left for Rudy Gobert or Karl-Anthony Towns. In fact, Gobert or Towns – but never both – have made All-NBA each of the last six years.Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic explored how Gobert and Towns viewed each other while foes and now teammates with the Timberwolves.Thanasis AntetokounmpoThanasis Antetokounmpo actually played a small role on the Bucks last season as a defensive specialist on the wing, helping to shed the image he's in the NBA only because he's Giannis Antetokounmpo's brother. But good luck convincing anyone now.Video caught Thanasis picking Giannis' nose before Milwaukee's win over the 76ers last night. In defense of Thanasis, it wasn't a deep pick. He did the ol' thumb-out move. Though technically a pick, that's barely more than a scratch. In prosecution of Thanasis, it was someone else's nose!-Dan FeldmanMore episodes are available exclusively on Dunc'd On Prime! Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Stanley Pritchett took his talents to an unexpected SEC school upon signing with the University of South Carolina. His decision paid off as he proved to be a dual-threat from the fullback position and ultimately became a member of Jimmy Johnson's first Dolphins draft class when Miami selected him in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Pritchett would go on to play four seasons in aqua and orange, many of them leading the way for Karim Abdul-Jabbar. In The Tank, “Pritch” explains why he chose the Gamecocks over his home-town Georgia Bulldogs (2:12) and surprises Juice and Seth by revealing he is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity (4:01). Stanley goes on to reflect upon his '96 draft class that featured the likes of Abdul-Jabbar, Zach Thomas, Daryl Gardener, Shawn Wooden, and others and recalls how challenging his first training camp was (6:03). He discusses his relationship with former ‘Fins fullback Keith Byars (13:24) as well as his nerves entering a Dan Marino huddle for the first time (17:12). To Seth's surprise, Pritch reveals he was unaware of several records he set in early games against two AFC East rivals (20:14), but vividly recalls his “welcome to the NFL” moment given to him by former Dolphins' enforcer turned Chicago Bear, Bryan Cox (28:56). Michigan State University allows nearly 15,000 basketball fans at sold-out games but shuts down in-person learning in January https://www.theblaze.com/news/michigan-state-university-basketball-remote-classes “Michigan State University won't allow for in-person learning until the final day of January, but at the same time had no problem opening up the school's arena for nearly 15,000 screaming fans to attend every Spartans' home basketball game this month. On Dec. 31, Michigan State University president Samuel L. Stanley Jr. announced in a letter that the school's spring 2022 semester would commence on Jan. 10 virtually and continue to be remote-learning until Jan. 31. "Given this intense surge in cases, we now feel the best decision for our campus is to start classes primarily remotely on Jan. 10 and for at least the first three weeks of the semester," writes Stanley – who uses the preferred pronouns of "he" and "him" in the letter. MSU student Blake Maday told Fox News "The fact that students can fill the (Breslin Center) packed shoulder to shoulder for hours before the game, for the entirety of the game and be together for, you know, probably three hours at night with no social distancing, not even including all the outsiders being brought in to campus for the game, it's wildly hypocritical". Dan Olsen – the deputy spokesperson for Michigan State University – issued a statement to Fox News regarding the situation. "Athletics events are optional events that students or the public can attend, unlike classes which are required for our students to progress toward their degree and graduate," Olsen said. "Our decision to start the first three weeks remotely was difficult and was influenced by two key factors. One factor was the uncertainty at the time of Omicron and having some time to understand it and its impact better."” CWWI Ad: This ad is for those looking for something other than a four-year college degree. Stockton is ranked in the top 75 all time greatest NBA players, and no amount of accolades are with the cost of truth.  S-R: What was your initial reaction to the onset of the pandemic in 2020? It really started the week of the WCC Tournament. Gonzaga plays in the title game then suddenly the NCAA Tournament is shut down. How long does it take to form opinions on everything that's going on, with the lockdowns and eventually vaccines, masks and everything else? Stockton: “It's pretty quick. I remember writing a paper trying to have some influence where I may have it, right when it all started with Rudy Gobert testing positive. With the Utah Jazz, which is obviously very close to home. Here he is warming up before the game, he doesn't even feel bad and the world shuts down. Then one university after another university until the conferences shut down and the tournament shuts down. Not one additional piece of evidence was offered for why each one did it. To me it's perplexing, but yeah, right from the start I was contemplating it, thinking it through and seeking out more and more information.” S-R: A counterpoint to that: The CDC reported this week that booster shots are 90% effective at preventing hospitalization with the omicron variant. Stockton: “Almost everybody I know that currently has COVID or has recently tested for COVID has been double-vaxxed and boosted. My personal experience says otherwise. Statistics from South Africa, from Scotland, from the UK who's now, their prime minister recently said we're not doing the mandates anymore. Came out publicly and said that. Those are indicators to me that we're not getting the true story. The numbers in South Africa are significantly better in multiples than they are in the United States where they haven't taken on those mandates where we have.” S-R: When you say your personal experience, do you mean your personal experience with having COVID? Stockton: “With people that I know personally that have COVID, that have tested positive recently. Whether it's omicron, whatever COVID is these days, is they've all been – almost all have been double vaccinated plus the booster. So I look at it more as a side effect than I look at it as an outbreak of COVID.” S-R: You were raised Catholic. The Pope has called it a moral obligation to receive the vaccine. What's your response to that and does that impact your decision at all? Stockton: “No. No, it doesn't.” S-R: Any way you could elaborate on that? Stockton: “I think we count on certain people in certain institutions to stand up to what's best for us and it's disappointing when those things don't happen.” Abdul-Jabbar says Stockton vaccine comments make athletes look like 'dumb jocks' https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/591014-abdul-jabbar-says-stockton-vaccine-comments-make-athletes-look Roll Clip: end at 35 seconds. Stockton didn't make athletes look like dumb jocks. Lebron did we he defended China over Hong Kong. Coach Steve Kerr makes jocks look dumb every time he pulls his mask down durring a game to communicate with his players. It was incredibly dumb to watch young, super athletic basketball players, play hard and physical, and when subing out of the game they would go sit in chairs six feet apart. This dumb jock list could go on, and I am sure you are thinging of some arbitrary dumb rules as I list these above. You Abdul-Jabbar wont point these out, because he is not thinking clearly, and he doesn't have permission to think clearly. Once someone like Stockton starts to think and say things outside of the liberal COVID narrative, they will call you dumb, stop enaging with logical arguments, and shut their ears and then light their hair on fire. Because that to them is logical.  Biden “Doocy” Gaffe: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/biden-calls-peter-doocy-to-clear-the-air-after-calling-fox-reporter-a-stupid-son-of-b I need to set this clip up before you hear it. Peter Doocy, Fox Whitehouse correspondent, asked Biden on the way out of a press conference if he "thinks inflation is a political liability”? And here is President in Chief, the guy big evan was saying is the nicer alternative to President Trump, well here is what Biden had to say in response: Roll clip "What a stupid son of a bitch”. Remember the definition of a political gaffe “is what they really think, but accidently say”. The liberals really do believe conservatives, and even more so, Christian conservatives, are stupid.  Peter Doocy then ends up on Sean Hannity later that night, and here is what he had to say in response to Biden's gaffe: Roll Clip https://twitter.com/FoxNews/status/1485807133492793347?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1485807133492793347%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonexaminer.com%2Fnews%2Fbiden-calls-peter-doocy-to-clear-the-air-after-calling-fox-reporter-a-stupid-son-of-b Hilarious, Peter Doocy was glad that Biden was actually talking…finally.  Closing This is Gabriel Rench with Crosspolitic News.
