Precision heeling and contact heeling may seem similar in some ways - but they're also very different. Join me for a conversation with Denise Fenzi on when she uses which one and how (and why) she approaches training both!
In this quick video, we break down the three main styles of heeling used in dog training: loose leash walking, contact heeling, and competition-style heeling. Whether you're a pet owner trying to walk calmly on a leash, a trainer working on precision, or prepping for the ring—understanding the differences between these styles can help you choose the right one for your training goals. Our guest today is Forrest Micke, bringing his background of sport and performance training knowledge into the mix. ALERT! This is a bit more of an “advanced” episode, so definitely a good one for those real dog-nerds out there. Tyler and Forrest have an in depth discussion of the when and why of using negative reinforcement versus punishment--particularly in the context of working with reactivity. Then, Forrest gives us some tips for working on head position during competitive heeling. On top of that, we get into the practicality and technicalities of different reinforcement schedules, and so much more. So, without further ado, let's dive into the conversation. Many experts and programs believe you need to feel your emotions as you energetically remove them. Traditional therapy believes you need to express and talk about your feelings. There are many ideas like, no emotion is bad you just have to have the right relationship with it, or spiritual bypassing that says if you don’t feel your feelings as you remove them energetically, you are bypassing. Grab your notebook and pen because this episode with Jess from @handlersandhumans is jam packed full of info!! Jess is a licensed professional counselor who lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, her 8 year old pit mix Dio, and her cat named Bat. Animals and therapy are two of Jess's passions, and she has brought them together in many ways, such as getting certified in animal assisted therapy, by doing equine psychotherapy work, training her reactive dog to become a therapy dog, and now as a coach who supports dog owners struggling with the human side of their training journey. Dio is a reactive boy who has worked hard to earn his CGC and pass the therapy dog evaluations - but made it clear that therapy work wasn't a fit for him, so now he's a happy house dog, loving life and hanging out with his cat all day. I had the pleasure of talking to Shannon from @loveandfeathersandshells! Shannon Cutts' unique path to animal communication has given her the knowledge and skill to gently and compassionately hold space for you and your pet as you build your relationship. Animal communication is about more than just learning to tune in to receive and translate interspecies messages. It is also about connecting with you, the animal's human. Most importantly, animal communication is about supporting you and your pet to feel closer and more connected at every stage of life, including after they have passed into spirit. And sometimes that gets complicated. Stuff can come up. Could your interspecies family use a pep talk, a mediator, a translator, an objective new voice, a fresh perspective, an unconditionally loving mentor? Shannon Cutts is happy to help. Her pets are Flash Gordon, an 8 year old standard wirehaired dachshund; Petal, a 3 month old cockatiel; Malti, a 9 year old redfoot tortoise; and Io, a 1.5 year old 3-toed box turtle. You can find Shannon's website to book a session here and listen to her podcast here (which I am a guest on the same week this episode comes out)! Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with Joe Gionti of K9 Heroes 4 Heroes. This is our second episode from the Hold the Line Conference Series and we talk with Joe Gionti from K9 Heroes 4 Heroes, which is an incredible charity. When you listen to this episode, you can hear Gionti's passion for helping those who wore the uniform get the dog they need! K9 Heroes 4 Heroes was started in January of 2021, and their mission is to to provide service dogs to veterans and first responders. They talk about Loki, who is a GSD out of Diehl Police K9 Training Center, trained as the demo dog for veterans and first responders at K9 Heroes 4 Heroes, and Loki is the face of K9H4H. The gents discuss the importance of selection and background of service and why that is extremely important. The team at K9H4H believe that no amount of money can truly repay our veterans and first responders for what they sacrifice for our country. So, what they saw as an opportunity to help, they quickly learned was an immeasurable act. Connecting dogs with veterans and first responders has had a powerful impact on overall mental and physical well being. There's nothing quite like a bond between man and dog. Gionti talks about their current fundraiser, the Benno 2.0 Fundraiser; a minimum of $50 get you an entry into the milestones raffle. Please head over to their website and learn more about Benno and his handler, Trent McDonald. Trent is a friend of the podcast and has been on an episode! https://go.eventgroovefundraising.com/benno They cannot do this alone. They need your help! We see these memes online everyday joking that all of our dogs are freelance emotional support dogs. But what if it's your dog's behavior that's causing you anxiety? I'm grateful to Karoline Edmonds of Dog Mom Mentality for courageously sharing her ups and downs with us today. Admittedly a bit of a reluctant and naïve dog owner, in early 2020 Karoline agreed that her boyfriend could get a dog – if he was willing to do all the work. Then COVID happened and Karoline found herself being the one at home all day everyday with Layla the Australian Shepherd mix. When Layla began showing fear, reactivity and even some fear aggression, Karoline found that her dog's anxiety was giving her anxiety! So now what was she going to do? Over the past 3 years Karoline has embarked on a journey of Growing & Heeling – working on her own mental and emotional health, as well as Layla's behavioral challenges. Karoline has now created the Growing & Heeling Journal to help pet parents navigate through both the awesome times and those times when it's unexpectedly difficult sharing your life with your dog. Grab a drink and a handhold, and join Mia Karlsson and Nikki Henderson for a chat on heeling! Unless you sail a multi-hull, 'life-on-a-heel' is an unavoidable fact of life. Heeling is a love//hate type thing: some think heeling contributes to the 'romance' of sailing; others find being heeled over a gut wrenching and deeply uncomfortable aspect of sailing. Through our various careers, we have all learnt the hard way about what works well and what doesn't when living on the North Face. BUT the whole point of the Quarterdeck is that you don't all have to go through this same painful learning process. So join us and we will share of all things that we have learnt about how to make living on a heel more bearable, more safe, and even - we know it's hard to believe - fun! Why is mastering life on a heel important? Because we all want our loved ones to come sailing again! And if life onboard is miserable, so is the crew, and then sailing quickly loses its charm. -- Join us on The QUARTERDECK, 59º North's online platform where we dive deep on the art of seamanship. First two weeks free! This podcast is recorded LIVE on video on the Quarterdeck, so members can watch the show as it happens, ask questions and suggest future topics.
