Today is a great day for all of you Corporate Moms who struggle with burnout, Mom guilt, and taking time for you.  Coach Aimee Greczmiel and I had a great conversation on putting you back on your priority list, letting go of Mom guilt and so much more. I have been hearing so much about “burnout” and it is something that is preventable and it’s up to YOU to take back your life and design it.  I know that can seem challenging; I get it.  As a former Corp Mom who had littles, a giant commute with a ton of responsibility at work and home, plus going back to school to certify as a coach and trainer back in the late 90s early 2000’s I still remember it well.  I remember struggling to find the balance (and you all know I don’t believe in balance, shout out to harmony), and something had to give.  Well, often it was ME who was not giving to me.  Talk about burnout on steroids.  I look back and wish we had someone who was talking about support for Corporate Moms at the time.  Sure, we had brown bag lunches (did I just date myself) that was “talking” about work/life balance and dealing with stress, and that was great but there was no follow-up or support.  Enter in coaches, let’s all take a deep breath in of support and focusing in on you. You are worth it.   Want to expand your contribution in your life? Join in today’s episode with our lovely guest Aimee Burmaster Hicks — Principal at Page Architecture firm at their Texas location. Aimee specializes in space planning and interior design development for corporate and healthcare clients. Her leadership role with Page builds on her commitment and collaborative approach to her work. “I like the idea of freedom within commitment. Being truly committed to my work allows me to take design risks, and the projects I work on are better for it,” Aimee says, adding, “Collaboration is key. Everyone has something to contribute to the project process.” My favorite part of our conversation was the story Aimee shared about how in order to win a project, the developer asked Aimee and her team to design a hospital out of legos in two hours (without prior knowledge and in the developer’s office) to assess how well the team could collaborate. That and how Aimee came into healthcare design kicking and screaming and now she loves it! Aimee realized at an early age that she had the talent and ambition to work as a creative professional. “Being an interior designer is all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Aimee explains. With that goal set, she prepared for her career by graduating from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, a program accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research (FIDER). With her work, she takes great pride in applying lessons learned from her previous projects to add value to the next. “Each new project brings the opportunity to build upon both my technical knowledge and creativity,” she says. “A new project also brings the chance to work with new team members I may not have worked with before. I like this relationship-building because it allows me to expand my ‘go-to’ resources within Page. I really feel that each project I do is better than the last.” Aimee’s portfolio of projects include the 250,000-square-foot Children’s Medical Center at Legacy in Plano; a 90,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Dallas for Concentra; the 82,000-square-foot Baylor Surgical Hospital at Park Place in Fort Worth; the 63,000-square-foot Baylor Medical Center Uptown in Dallas; a 146,000-square-foot Hospital and 80,000-square-foot Medical Office Building for Forest Park Medical Center in Austin; the 450,000-square-foot tower, in addition to 45,000-square-feet of renovation of the Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa; and 29,000-square-foot Solomon Associate’s office in Dallas. And finally, I’d like to thank the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers for their support of this show. Find out more about their certification program at http://aahid.org In today’s episode you will learn: What it means to be truly committed to the work and how it allows for more design risks for better outcomes. The story of how Aimee and her team at Page Architects won a hospital project by being asked by the developers to design the hospital out of legos in two hours. What makes collaboration successful and what is most challenging about it. How it took Aimee five years to really understand the patient experience and how healthcare design does make a real difference in the lives of patients, their families, caretakers and those working in the healthcare setting. What Aimee noticed at the hospital where she had her brain tumor removed made her question the value of her work. How hospitality and healthcare are now one of the same and what’s next. Why young interior designers out of college are choosing not to specialize in healthcare design and what Page Architects are doing to change this. How one hospital was built in the middle of nowhere by developers who see ten years into the future the mixed use community spaces that will surround and be part of the hospital setting like yoga and cooking classes. How Aimee came into healthcare design kicking and screaming and ended up loving it! How branding and technology are making their way into healthcare design in mixed use spaces. We are kicking off Black History month 2018 with a special friend of mine, Zemirah Scott. She is a philanthropist, branding marketing analyst, personal trainer, and business owner. She has a profound way of igniting lives, and we clicked immediately the very first time I met her. She is a former Temple University and Montgomery County Community College student, and her mission is to supply resources and tools for entrepreneurs and small businesses to gain economic stability. Since 2013, she has been the CEO of her marketing branding company, The Difference Development Group, better known as DDG-Philly in the City of Brotherly Love. Zemirah has truly impacted communities around her by her involvement in small business development, speaking at conferences, and mentoring youth. Her desire to give back has allowed her to amplify her knowledge, expertise, and professionalism. Her vision to propel and ignite the dream chaser inside each of us is everlasting, and that is what she is bringing to us in this episode. Drop the Negativity Who are the people that surround you? Zemirah says that this is an important thing to consider. We MUST surround ourselves with people who do amazing things! When she faced depression, she knew that it was necessary to “be the best me” and make changes. To excel at an optimal level, there may be people that you don’t need in your life, so drop them---and drop the negativity! TWEET: Find ways to either change you or change your environment. “It’s NOT really about you” Have you made excuses as to why you CAN’T do something? We would all probably admit that we do. Zemirah shares her experience when she had promised to write a book, but then decided to put it on the back burner because she had internal battles and a lot going on in her life. Her coach said, “It’s not really about you,” and that comment gave her a new perspective and new motivation to follow through. TWEET: We owe it to ourselves to uplift someone else. Mentoring Success Do you take the time to intentionally mentor others? Zemirah mentored her younger sister, age 11, who now has her own business! Her sister watched everything Zemirah has done, and she is learning what it means to be financially stable. Zemirah says, “I may not ever have a full-scale mentorship program, but I will always make room for mentees who want to learn.” TWEET: Massive failure equals massive success. Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Watch The Secret, a documentary, by Rhonda Byrne, to unlock some things. Her vast knowledge of all aspects of event production and her ability to manage multimillion dollar production budgets put all of our venues, vendors, and clients at ease. Julie’s early dreams Have you gone through a time when you had no career goals? Kerry-Ann has a Jamaican quote that sums up her experience in an immigrant family that faced challenges and extreme adjustments in chasing their dreams in the US. Sometimes you find yourself in a situation beyond your control and you must take the time to change things slowly. Kerry-Ann shares some of the courageous actions her mother took to keep her family together and bring them safely to America. TWEET: When your hand is in the lion’s mouth, take your time and pull it out. @carryonkerry Figuring it out: Have you been in the place of not being understood? Kerry-Ann was a young person of color working in the corporate world, trying hard to figure out proper behavior and how to be understood. At each level of achievement, she faced challenges, especially the challenges of the American work culture, which differed from her homeland of Jamaica. TWEET: Take #inspiration from others, but make it your own. @carryonkerry Just be YOU: We’ve all felt it, haven’t we? The pressure of trying to be “someone else.” Kerry-Ann has learned to cater to her own audience because they are unique for specific reasons. She shares that we all need to find compassion for ourselves and allow ourselves the time we need. Her advice is to be in the space to chase YOUR dreams and “just be YOU.” TWEET: Allow yourself the time you need for a mental break. @carryonkerry Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Write it down and make it visible. Cheryl Tan knows the power of stories in connecting people. She’s been a broadcast journalist in GA and VA, with 20+ years in the TV news business. After blending her talents with her entrepreneurial drive, she now shares interviewing and storytelling skills with business owners who want to use video or media to tell the stories of their companies. Cheryl knows how to help entrepreneurs be seen as experts in their fields and helps them connect with clients and customers through video and public relations.    TWEET: “Learn to share your story while you build your #Authority!” @CherylTan   Life’s Changing Journey We all know that we don’t always end up doing what we “think” we will. There is value in being willing to change your path and find your voice. This is what Cheryl had to do to end up in the field of broadcast journalism. She shares how she learned from others and learned about connecting with people through stories. The key elements are listening and being curious. Even though her path didn’t lead where she expected, Cheryl found a way to blend her innate curiosity, her love for writing, and her passion for literature into a “news job.” TWEET: “Your WHY will come out quite naturally when you share what you do.” @CherylTan   Testing the Waters Do you know the feeling of leaping into something new? Cheryl describes her personal experience as “dipping her toe” into a new path. She began asking business associates if they needed help with newsletters or media and was surprised when her offers were well-received. Soon enough, she was able to pick a date at which she would go “all in.” That was over two years ago—a time period fraught with journeys, pivots, and changes. What is the secret to making it work? Cheryl says that you need the courage to leave all you’ve ever known and have faith in yourself. She shares how she now serves people in a different way and empowers them to tell their stories. TWEET: “People are more open to you when you start by offering help.” @CherylTan   Asking for Help Do you ask for help when you need it? Most of us don’t. Cheryl had to look for people who knew “a thousand times more” than she did and tap into their expertise. If you look, you will find them—those who had left something behind to look for something else. Cheryl warns that these “helpers” don’t have to have the same exact situation as you do to be helpful. The passion to help others is the common factor. TWEET: “It’s more than OK to ask for help.” @CherylTan GUEST RECOMMENDATION: “Take action. Do ONE thing to move you forward. Cornell Thomas’ father was a police officer in the city of Passaic, New Jersey. Officer Bobby Thomas passed away when Cornell was only four years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his four siblings by herself. The strength and positive mindset that Cornell’s mom displayed through his childhood helped mold him into the man he is today. Cornell is a speaker, author, basketball coach, and world changer. He is a living example of how a positive mindset can transform your life. Cornell’s “next play” mentality is what helped him triumph over adversity and turn the pain of a career-ending injury into finding his purpose in life. Cornell is the author of two books (The Power Of Positivity and The Power Of Me) with two more books coming out this fall. Cornell travels all over the world sharing his story and inspiring others. TWEET: Ep. 59: Cornell Thomas - Turning Your “Why Me” into “What Now” He was raised to believe that everything happens for a reason. Everybody has a past. Everyone has a particular way they were raised. Some of us have more advantageous pieces of our histories than others. But ALL of us can take advantage of the wisdom that’s out there, the lesson we can learn from our lives AND the lives of others. Cornell Thomas' mother drummed into his head the idea that everything happens for a reason. That was the root of his positivity about life and why he believes that anyone can accomplish anything they desire if they are willing to put in the work and never give up. You can hear Cornell’s story and learn about what he’s doing to change the world through his own brand of positivity, on this episode. Why you can’t allow your “why” to die. Much of the success today’s guest, Cornell Thomas has achieved has to do with the reasons behind his efforts. He believes that his “why” (taking care of his mother and making a difference in the lives of others) is what has fueled him over the long haul. If your “why” is not strong enough you will give up. Cornell is an example of what happens when you don’t allow your “why” to die. Please take the time to listen to this inspiring and motivating episode of Chasing Dreams with Aimee J. Cornell Thomas’ attitude and story could light the fire under you that you’ve been needing for a long time. TWEET: Why you can’t allow your #why to die ~ on this episode of #ChasingDreams “Why me” is never helpful. “What now” can change your life. When Cornell Thomas experienced a career-ending injury (he was just about to become a professional basketball player) he was tempted - like all of us - to mope around and focus on the “why me” of his circumstances. But he discovered rather quickly that “why me” never helps you move to where you need to be. Instead, he was able to shift his mindset from ‘why me” to “what now,” and the doors that opened for him were an amazing blessing that he wouldn’t have been able to see with any other mindset. You can learn a lot from Cornell’s experience, so grab a pen and paper to take some notes and listen to this episode. Stop negativity when it’s a snowball. Don’t wait until it’s an avalanche. Cornell Thomas believes that most definitions of positivity nowadays are flat out wrong. The kind of positivity that makes a difference isn’t a feel-good, pollyanna attitude that denies the harsh realities of life. Instead, it’s a belief that negativity is an enemy that has to be killed early in its life cycle. In his words, negativity is like a snowball that picks up speed and eventually becomes an avalanche. If you wait to address it until it’s an avalanche, you’ll never survive. You’ve got to stop it while it’s still a little snowball. If you need to learn how to do that you’ve got to hear this episode. Cornell’s approach is not only helpful, it’s very effective. TWEET: Stop negativity when it’s a snowball. Most of the time the Chasing Dreams podcast highlights guests who have interesting journeys toward the fulfillment of their dreams. But for the end of the year Aimee decided to do something a little bit different. She invited her sisters to come on the show to turn the tables. They are interviewing her to give you a bit of the backstory behind, Aimee, the Chief Dream Chaser who keeps the Chasing Dreams podcast and brand rolling. You’ll likely be very surprised at all the things Aimee is skilled at and doing. So sit back, grab a warm drink, and get to know Aimee on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: I want to leave an impact on the world, so it’s better than when I came into it ~ Aimee J. Do you have a “day job” while chasing your dreams? You’re not alone. In fact, most people start out chasing their dreams on the side while a full time job continues to provide the bulk of their income as the dream builds. Aimee is no different, though her full time job is something she truly loves. She’s working on the Chasing Dreams podcast and brand behind the scenes in her “off” time from her full time job. But doing that enables her to maintain the stability she wants in life while still adding things to her life that are enjoyable and fun for her to do! You can hear how Aimee thinks about that tension between work and dreams, on this episode. A full time employee, owner of a software company, and podcast host - all at the same time. It’s not easy to juggle so many things. In fact, when Aimee was asked what it’s like to do so many things, her immediate answer was, “exhausting.” But she was quick to communicate that it’s also worth it, and she wouldn’t change a thing. It’s part of the cost you have to pay if you’re serious about chasing your dreams, and Aimee serves as a great example of someone willing to do it. If you’re serious about your dreams, stop for a moment and ask yourself what’s holding you back from going for them. Is it laziness? Is it a lack of discipline? What can you do to put yourself in a place to get moving on those things? Hear how Aimee thinks about those things on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: Dreams aren’t only about your career. Whatever it is, go for it! ~ Aimee J. You’ve got to put your dream out there and go for it! Aimee’s pursued many dreams in her life, only to find that the process of actually “chasing” them is part of what defines them. She’s been to college, law school, and has learned software engineering, which she loves. She’s now adding her podcast and online business efforts to that mix. It’s all of those things combined that have enabled her to know what she’s about and what she want’s to chase. So don’t be shy. Don’t hold back because you’re uncertain exactly what it is you want to chase. The process will define that and you won’t know until you get into it. Tools you can use to help you chase your dreams. One of the difficult parts of chasing a dream while the rest of life is going on is staying organized. To help her create systems, keep track of things she has to do, and make the most of her time, Aimee has a handful of great software tools that she feels she couldn’t do without. Among them are Google Drive, Evernote, Lastpass, and others. You can hear how she uses some of these on this episode, and why she feels it’s vital to have reliable tools that can help you chase your dream.
